00:01:46She believed that I would harm the guy

00:01:49A desperate housewife

00:01:57It was horrible

00:01:59And a podiatrist

00:02:01I didn't know if it was Hitman, I didn't know what it was

00:02:04Total shock?

00:02:06The crime was caught on camera

00:02:08One car will hit her

00:02:12Two hundred dollars

00:02:40In Rockland County, New York

00:02:42Nestled along the Hudson River

00:02:43About an hour's drive north of New York City

00:02:47It was late afternoon

00:02:49When a car salesman got a visit from a former customer

00:02:51What did this woman want to talk to you about?

00:02:54About planning on killing her boyfriend's wife

00:02:59And you're a car salesman?

00:03:01Yes

00:03:02What are you thinking when this woman comes in to ask you this?

00:03:06Kind of blanked out a little bit

00:03:08Obviously the only thing I could ask is why?

00:03:11She didn't want to come forward and give me the full information

00:03:14But she was giving me little by little

00:03:16Did she look like the kind of woman who would be coming in to hire a hitman?

00:03:20No way

00:03:22Not a million years I would have think that

00:03:24Markenzie, who asked us not to use his last name for privacy reasons

00:03:28Had been selling cars for more than 16 years

00:03:31He said this was a first

00:03:33Did you make a comment that would lead her to come back to you?

00:03:38Markenzie thinks she misinterpreted something he said in an earlier conversation

00:03:42When she accused her ex-husband of harming their children

00:03:46I just pictured that happened to one of my kids

00:03:49And

00:03:51We were like, hey, you know, what's going on?

00:03:53If you need any help, any kind of situation

00:03:56We know, you know, a few people that could help you out

00:03:59Meaning that I have a friend of mine in a police station nearby

00:04:03I always call for any reason whatsoever

00:04:06Do you think she took what you told her the wrong way?

00:04:08I think she did

00:04:09She thought maybe that you meant

00:04:11I know some people who can rough your ex-husband up

00:04:14Yep

00:04:15Now she was back talking about a different person

00:04:18Markenzie worried

00:04:19Was someone in immediate danger?

00:04:21He stayed composed and kept talking to his former customer

00:04:24I had to start making her feel comfortable

00:04:28I told her that it was not something that I do

00:04:31But I could potentially get her in touch with the people that could possibly do

00:04:35And did you have any background in law enforcement?

00:04:38No

00:04:38You're just a regular guy?

00:04:41A regular guy who hangs out with cops

00:04:44Using his skills as a salesman, he kept the ruse going

00:04:48Even telling her about men he would hire for the job

00:04:51These guys are like top black ops

00:04:53Was she interested?

00:04:56After she left, Markenzie immediately texted his friend on the police force

00:05:00I kept blowing up his phone to call me, call me

00:05:03But he was off till he was playing basketball

00:05:07Even though he couldn't reach the officer

00:05:08He arranged a second meeting for later that night

00:05:11Here they are on this gas station security footage

00:05:14What has she brought you?

00:05:17She brought me a picture in a Ziploc bag

00:05:19A picture of the target?

00:05:20Along with the phone number for the target

00:05:22What did you think when you saw that photo?

00:05:24At first I was like, okay, really now this is really serious

00:05:28And now I put myself out there

00:05:31And I have no idea how to go ahead from there

00:05:35Eventually, his police officer friend called him back

00:05:38Markenzie didn't know if he should continue

00:05:40He says his friend urged him to contact detectives

00:05:44He asked me, how would I feel in the next couple of days

00:05:48Watching the news and find her dead in the news

00:05:51Knowing that I couldn't stop it

00:05:54Markenzie reached out to Ramapo New York detectives

00:05:56Robert Fitzgerald and Peter Luzan

00:05:58When we first heard it, we were like

00:06:00It's a very unusual case to hear

00:06:02We don't get too many cases like that

00:06:03So we were like, well, we'll bring him in

00:06:05And we'll see if it's actually real or not

00:06:07What do you ask him?

00:06:09We get into it, like, hey, we're very interested in this story

00:06:11Let's hear what it is

00:06:12And he's like, listen, I was approached by a female

00:06:14How to get rid of somebody

00:06:16Who's the woman who wanted the hit?

00:06:18It was Kelly Gribluck

00:06:20What were you learning about Kelly?

00:06:23There was some background with Kelly

00:06:24She was formerly Orthodox Jewish

00:06:28She was divorced

00:06:30She had children

00:06:32I had been involved with Kelly Gribluck prior to that

00:06:36In a different investigation

00:06:38So I was familiar with her

00:06:39Detective Peggy Braddock had looked into Kelly's abuse claims

00:06:43About her ex-husband

00:06:44That case had gone nowhere

00:06:46Now, investigators were turning to the detective

00:06:49To learn more about Kelly

00:06:50What did you tell them

00:06:51And how could that help their investigation?

00:06:54I just felt that she wasn't a very honest person

00:06:56That she, um, was deceptive

00:06:58And that she was someone to be concerned with

00:07:00Kelly had three young boys

00:07:02And was a former mortician

00:07:04Turned aspiring model

00:07:06So who was the woman Kelly wanted dead?

00:07:09Did she give you a name?

00:07:10Yeah

00:07:10What was the name?

00:07:14Susan Bernstein was a housewife

00:07:16Who also had three young children

00:07:18But why was she in Kelly's sights?

00:07:21The investigation was just getting started

00:07:23We wanted to set up another meet

00:07:26And we wanted to make sure we had audio, video

00:07:29This is where this whole story goes a little bit Hollywood

00:07:32Yeah, literally

00:07:33It's almost something like

00:07:34Are you sure?

00:07:35Because this doesn't sound possible

00:07:37Right

00:07:38Her jaw was on the floor

00:07:39She was, like, shocked

00:07:41This is dark

00:07:42A second murder-for-hire plot

00:07:45By the same person

00:07:46We couldn't believe it

00:08:04Detectives set out to catch Kelly Gribaluk

00:08:06In the act of planning a murder

00:08:09The thing we needed to do

00:08:11Was to get Markenzie's cooperation

00:08:14Markenzie, the car salesman

00:08:16And father of four

00:08:17Had earned Kelly's trust

00:08:18So detectives asked him

00:08:20To keep playing the role of bad guy

00:08:23That's got to be really daunting

00:08:25It was kind of cool, you know

00:08:27In a way, you know

00:08:29Like, that's like 007 type thing

00:08:32They told him to set up another meeting with Kelly

00:08:34The location?

00:08:35A Walmart parking lot

00:08:37Directly across the street

00:08:38From the police station

00:08:40We can literally see the police department

00:08:42Yeah, I mean, you can throw a rock

00:08:44And hit the police station for me

00:08:46This time they'd be watching

00:08:48They'd rigged Markenzie's car

00:08:50With cameras and microphones

00:08:52So show us where all the cameras were

00:08:54Cameras was over here

00:08:55In the center

00:08:56And the microphone was hanging over here

00:08:59And under my seat here

00:09:01I had a phone

00:09:02As detectives waited for the meetup to be set

00:09:05They scrambled to find out more about Kelly

00:09:08And her target, Susan Bernstein

00:09:11Turned out the detectives knew Susan's husband well

00:09:14Dr. Ira Bernstein

00:09:16He's your police foot surgeon

00:09:19Yes

00:09:20A lot of the people that were involved

00:09:21In this investigation in a detective unit

00:09:23Were patients of his

00:09:24They discovered that Ira had been having

00:09:27An on-again, off-again affair with Kelly

00:09:29I've always wondered why someone chooses feet

00:09:32As a doctor

00:09:33Feet are extremely important, yes

00:09:35He told us that he and his wife Susan

00:09:37Were separated

00:09:38When in walked Kelly

00:09:40It was not exclusive

00:09:42And it was not

00:09:43Like lightning at first sight

00:09:45Ira says Kelly had been a welcome escape

00:09:47From a marriage that was falling apart

00:09:49According to Ira

00:09:51His wife had had it easy

00:09:52Raising their young children

00:09:54With the help of a live-in nanny

00:09:55Her days were filled with

00:09:57Lunch dates with friends

00:09:59Spa appointments

00:10:00Mani-pedis

00:10:01While he was working day and night

00:10:03At his foot surgery centers

00:10:04To keep up with the family's lavish lifestyle

00:10:07My house was 13,000 square feet

00:10:10On 14 acres of land

00:10:12And we had tennis courts

00:10:14A pool

00:10:15A pool house

00:10:16A lake

00:10:16A dock

00:10:17Boats

00:10:18Did you have other houses?

00:10:19I had about 20 different buildings

00:10:22And houses that I would rent out

00:10:24He says Susan was the one

00:10:26Spending most of the money

00:10:27I overextended myself

00:10:29And then her spending

00:10:31Just started amplifying and amplifying

00:10:33To the point where

00:10:34You know, 40,000 a month

00:10:36On her credit cards

00:10:36Was standard operating procedure

00:10:38What was she buying?

00:10:40Everything from vacations

00:10:42She would plan

00:10:44Clothes

00:10:44Jewelry

00:10:46Ira claims he was lonely

00:10:48And resentful

00:10:49And admits he cheated on Susan

00:10:51But he says when she found out

00:10:53Instead of filing for divorce

00:10:54They decided to stay together

00:10:56With unorthodox rules

00:10:58We decided to have an open marriage

00:11:00And she could start dating people

00:11:02But he says it wasn't long

00:11:04Before Susan shut down that arrangement

00:11:06And they legally separated

00:11:07Are you on the market again?

00:11:10Are you looking now that you're separated

00:11:13From your wife?

00:11:14Yes, I'm dating a couple different girls

00:11:16And that's when he met Kelly

00:11:18She had embarked on a new career

00:11:20Selling shoe orthotics

00:11:22She was actually a patient of mine

00:11:24About four years earlier

00:11:25And so she was calling me out of the blue

00:11:27To say she'd like to meet with me

00:11:29And see if we can do business together

00:11:30She asked Ira to be part of her company

00:11:33And he agreed

00:11:34Their professional relationship

00:11:36Quickly turned personal

00:11:37Ira says he found Kelly hard to resist

00:11:40Describe her for us, like, physically

00:11:43I mean, physically she's very pretty

00:11:45She's a model

00:11:46She goes for photo shoots

00:11:48She's well built

00:11:49And she's got a sexy kind of look to her

00:11:51Ira says Kelly had gone through

00:11:53A traumatic divorce

00:11:54That left her family in tatters

00:11:57We could relate perfectly

00:11:58And I think that's why we

00:11:59Kind of meshed so quickly together

00:12:01She was a big comfort to me

00:12:03But after six months of dating Kelly

00:12:05He says he and Susan

00:12:06Decided to give their marriage

00:12:07One more try

00:12:08He was tired of spending money on lawyers

00:12:11And missed his children

00:12:12I couldn't see them enough

00:12:14I couldn't be involved in their life as much

00:12:16I was frustrated

00:12:17And I said to her

00:12:18You know what?

00:12:18If there's a chance

00:12:19We can work this out still

00:12:49While Markenzie sat in his car

00:12:51So she pulls up

00:12:52As expected

00:12:53And where are you guys?

00:12:55Well we have one car close

00:12:56As close as we can get

00:12:58Another car here

00:12:59Maybe a third there

00:13:00And a fourth

00:13:01In case they leave or go somewhere

00:13:03We can follow them

00:13:04Markenzie needed to convince Kelly

00:13:06To get in his car

00:13:07To get her on tape

00:13:08And she actually gets out of the car

00:13:10And gets into that car

00:13:11We're like

00:13:12This is fantastic

00:13:14Coming from inside that car?

00:13:15Well first they greet each other

00:13:17Remember they know each other

00:13:19So there's some friendly conversation

00:13:20And then it comes around to

00:13:23The plan

00:13:24It can't be a robbery

00:13:26It can't be a shooting

00:13:26It can't be anything like that

00:13:27Kelly suggested it should look like an accident

00:13:30What I understand now

00:13:32In the car accident

00:13:33It's not 40

00:13:35It's a 50-50% chance

00:13:37He told her his men were ready

00:13:38But they needed more information

00:13:40Like details about Susan's car

00:15:17This time in a CVS parking lot

00:15:20We're figuring that no hitman's going to be one in the same exact spot every time

00:15:24So let's move it around just to change up locations to make it look more realistic

00:15:30We would always be multiple cars with at least two officers or two detectives in each car

00:15:37Like clockwork, Kelly pulled in and got into Markenzie's car

00:15:41They had coached him on how to handle the meeting

00:15:44We just told Markenzie, just go along with whatever she says

00:15:46First of all, you know, don't talk or enter anything

00:15:48Just go along with that

00:15:49I said, I can make that happen

00:15:51Was that like either a hit and run

00:15:53Like when she was getting out of her car

00:15:55Or like playing an accident

00:15:56So they backed up into her

00:15:57And the guy stayed and said, I didn't see her

00:16:00You know, I was playing an accident

00:16:01So there's no investigation

00:16:06Kelly wanted to move fast

00:16:08Detectives listened as she offered details on Susan's upcoming schedule

00:16:11So this weekend, she's like, she's going to a party on Saturday night

00:16:15I'm sure it's Saturday during the day

00:16:16She's going to go out to the spa

00:16:17And she's going to go out there and here and everything

00:16:20Then Kelly revealed that Susan knew all about her relationship with Ira

00:16:23In fact, she said Susan had recently texted her

00:16:28Unbelievable

00:16:28You know, because look how psycho she is

00:16:30I haven't answered

00:16:31She texted me like the last three weeks or four weeks

00:16:33Why is she texting you a little bit?

00:16:36She thinks he's with me

00:16:38She calls me a prostitute and a slut

00:16:40Look how mean she is

00:16:42Kelly moved on to lock in a price for the hit
