00:00:02Tonight on Dateline
00:00:09A brand new twist in a mind-bending mystery
00:00:13They'll take her and no one will ever find her body
00:00:15A kidnapping and then murder
00:00:17To say that this case took a turn
00:00:19No one expected is really the understatement of my career
00:00:22Nobody saw this coming
00:00:25Pre-doctor
00:00:26Right
00:00:27Nice and clean, no problems, very sweet
00:00:30He's trying to kill his wife
00:00:32He kills her, he has everything
00:00:34There was a lot of money involved here
00:00:37He was a doctor, he just didn't expect this of a doctor
00:00:39It can't be a robbery, it can't be a shooting, it can't be anything like that
00:00:42She was the girlfriend
00:00:43I was the one who put it into motion
00:00:48Is there any way anyone can hit her and then say it was an accident?
00:00:52We can make that happen
00:00:53He had already told me the guys were flying up from Florida
00:00:55The black ops
00:00:56He said my guys don't back down from the plan
00:01:00Is this what you want done?
00:01:01Nobody's coming back
00:01:02Did your jaw drop?
00:01:03Yes
00:01:04It was shocking
00:01:05Lightning was about to strike twice
00:01:07A sizzling affair
00:01:09A secret murder plot
00:01:11And a stunner of an ending that you'll never see coming
00:01:15I'm Lester Holt
00:01:16I'm Lester Holt
00:01:17And this is Dateline
00:01:25Here's Andrea Canning with Take Two
00:01:33The story you're about to hear may sound hard to believe
00:01:36I don't think I've ever seen a twist like this in a Dateline before
00:01:40And you've seen a lot of Dateline
00:01:42A murder for hire plot involving a luxury car salesman
00:01:46She believed that I would harm the guy
00:01:49A desperate housewife
00:01:51Don't you worry, you are done
00:01:54A seductive mortician
00:01:57It was horrible
00:01:59And a podiatrist
00:02:01I didn't know if it was Hitman, I didn't know what it was
00:02:04Total shock?
00:02:05Total shock
00:02:06The crime was caught on camera
00:02:08One car will hit her
00:02:10Okay, two?
00:02:12Two hundred dollars
00:02:13Okay
00:02:13When can we get to the pod?
00:02:16But just when it seemed the case was closed
00:02:18The plot reignited
00:02:20Even harder to believe
00:02:22The target
00:02:24This time
00:02:25That was shocking
00:02:26And just last week
00:02:29A brand new ending
00:02:30What were you thinking?
00:02:32Why would you do this again?
00:02:37Our story begins in early April 2016
00:02:40In Rockland County, New York
00:02:42Nestled along the Hudson River
00:02:43About an hour's drive north of New York City
00:02:47It was late afternoon
00:02:49When a car salesman got a visit from a former customer
00:02:51What did this woman want to talk to you about?
00:02:54About planning on killing her boyfriend's wife
00:02:59And you're a car salesman?
00:03:01Yes
00:03:02What are you thinking when this woman comes in to ask you this?
00:03:06Kind of blanked out a little bit
00:03:08Obviously the only thing I could ask is why?
00:03:11She didn't want to come forward and give me the full information
00:03:14But she was giving me little by little
00:03:16Did she look like the kind of woman who would be coming in to hire a hitman?
00:03:20No way
00:03:22Not a million years I would have think that
00:03:24Markenzie, who asked us not to use his last name for privacy reasons
00:03:28Had been selling cars for more than 16 years
00:03:31He said this was a first
00:03:33Did you make a comment that would lead her to come back to you?
00:03:37Oh yeah
00:03:38Markenzie thinks she misinterpreted something he said in an earlier conversation
00:03:42When she accused her ex-husband of harming their children
00:03:46I just pictured that happened to one of my kids
00:03:49And
00:03:50What was your comment?
00:03:51We were like, hey, you know, what's going on?
00:03:53If you need any help, any kind of situation
00:03:56We know, you know, a few people that could help you out
00:03:59Meaning that I have a friend of mine in a police station nearby
00:04:03I always call for any reason whatsoever
00:04:06Do you think she took what you told her the wrong way?
00:04:08I think she did
00:04:09She thought maybe that you meant
00:04:11I know some people who can rough your ex-husband up
00:04:14Yep
00:04:15Now she was back talking about a different person
00:04:18Markenzie worried
00:04:19Was someone in immediate danger?
00:04:21He stayed composed and kept talking to his former customer
00:04:24I had to start making her feel comfortable
00:04:28I told her that it was not something that I do
00:04:31But I could potentially get her in touch with the people that could possibly do
00:04:35And did you have any background in law enforcement?
00:04:38No
00:04:38You're just a regular guy?
00:04:41A regular guy who hangs out with cops
00:04:42Pick up a few things here and there
00:04:44Using his skills as a salesman, he kept the ruse going
00:04:48Even telling her about men he would hire for the job
00:04:51These guys are like top black ops
00:04:53Was she interested?
00:04:55She was
00:04:56After she left, Markenzie immediately texted his friend on the police force
00:05:00I kept blowing up his phone to call me, call me
00:05:03But he was off till he was playing basketball
00:05:07Even though he couldn't reach the officer
00:05:08He arranged a second meeting for later that night
00:05:11Here they are on this gas station security footage
00:05:14What has she brought you?
00:05:17She brought me a picture in a Ziploc bag
00:05:19A picture of the target?
00:05:20Along with the phone number for the target
00:05:22What did you think when you saw that photo?
00:05:24At first I was like, okay, really now this is really serious
00:05:28And now I put myself out there
00:05:31And I have no idea how to go ahead from there
00:05:35Eventually, his police officer friend called him back
00:05:38Markenzie didn't know if he should continue
00:05:40He says his friend urged him to contact detectives
00:05:44He asked me, how would I feel in the next couple of days
00:05:48Watching the news and find her dead in the news
00:05:51Knowing that I couldn't stop it
00:05:54Markenzie reached out to Ramapo New York detectives
00:05:56Robert Fitzgerald and Peter Luzan
00:05:58When we first heard it, we were like
00:06:00It's a very unusual case to hear
00:06:02We don't get too many cases like that
00:06:03So we were like, well, we'll bring him in
00:06:05And we'll see if it's actually real or not
00:06:07What do you ask him?
00:06:09We get into it, like, hey, we're very interested in this story
00:06:11Let's hear what it is
00:06:12And he's like, listen, I was approached by a female
00:06:14How to get rid of somebody
00:06:16Who's the woman who wanted the hit?
00:06:18It was Kelly Gribluck
00:06:20What were you learning about Kelly?
00:06:23There was some background with Kelly
00:06:24She was formerly Orthodox Jewish
00:06:28She was divorced
00:06:30She had children
00:06:32I had been involved with Kelly Gribluck prior to that
00:06:36In a different investigation
00:06:38So I was familiar with her
00:06:39Detective Peggy Braddock had looked into Kelly's abuse claims
00:06:43About her ex-husband
00:06:44That case had gone nowhere
00:06:46Now, investigators were turning to the detective
00:06:49To learn more about Kelly
00:06:50What did you tell them
00:06:51And how could that help their investigation?
00:06:54I just felt that she wasn't a very honest person
00:06:56That she, um, was deceptive
00:06:58And that she was someone to be concerned with
00:07:00Kelly had three young boys
00:07:02And was a former mortician
00:07:04Turned aspiring model
00:07:06So who was the woman Kelly wanted dead?
00:07:09Did she give you a name?
00:07:10Yeah
00:07:10What was the name?
00:07:12Susan
00:07:12Susan Bernstein
00:07:14Susan Bernstein was a housewife
00:07:16Who also had three young children
00:07:18But why was she in Kelly's sights?
00:07:21The investigation was just getting started
00:07:23We wanted to set up another meet
00:07:26And we wanted to make sure we had audio, video
00:07:29This is where this whole story goes a little bit Hollywood
00:07:32Yeah, literally
00:07:33It's almost something like
00:07:34Are you sure?
00:07:35Because this doesn't sound possible
00:07:37Right
00:07:38Her jaw was on the floor
00:07:39She was, like, shocked
00:07:41This is dark
00:07:42A second murder-for-hire plot
00:07:45By the same person
00:07:46We couldn't believe it
00:08:04Detectives set out to catch Kelly Gribaluk
00:08:06In the act of planning a murder
00:08:09The thing we needed to do
00:08:11Was to get Markenzie's cooperation
00:08:14Markenzie, the car salesman
00:08:16And father of four
00:08:17Had earned Kelly's trust
00:08:18So detectives asked him
00:08:20To keep playing the role of bad guy
00:08:23That's got to be really daunting
00:08:25It was kind of cool, you know
00:08:27In a way, you know
00:08:29Like, that's like 007 type thing
00:08:32They told him to set up another meeting with Kelly
00:08:34The location?
00:08:35A Walmart parking lot
00:08:37Directly across the street
00:08:38From the police station
00:08:40We can literally see the police department
00:08:42Yeah, I mean, you can throw a rock
00:08:44And hit the police station for me
00:08:46This time they'd be watching
00:08:48They'd rigged Markenzie's car
00:08:50With cameras and microphones
00:08:52So show us where all the cameras were
00:08:54Cameras was over here
00:08:55In the center
00:08:56And the microphone was hanging over here
00:08:59And under my seat here
00:09:01I had a phone
00:09:02As detectives waited for the meetup to be set
00:09:05They scrambled to find out more about Kelly
00:09:08And her target, Susan Bernstein
00:09:11Turned out the detectives knew Susan's husband well
00:09:14Dr. Ira Bernstein
00:09:16He's your police foot surgeon
00:09:19Yes
00:09:20A lot of the people that were involved
00:09:21In this investigation in a detective unit
00:09:23Were patients of his
00:09:24They discovered that Ira had been having
00:09:27An on-again, off-again affair with Kelly
00:09:29I've always wondered why someone chooses feet
00:09:32As a doctor
00:09:33Feet are extremely important, yes
00:09:35He told us that he and his wife Susan
00:09:37Were separated
00:09:38When in walked Kelly
00:09:40It was not exclusive
00:09:42And it was not
00:09:43Like lightning at first sight
00:09:45Ira says Kelly had been a welcome escape
00:09:47From a marriage that was falling apart
00:09:49According to Ira
00:09:51His wife had had it easy
00:09:52Raising their young children
00:09:54With the help of a live-in nanny
00:09:55Her days were filled with
00:09:57Lunch dates with friends
00:09:59Spa appointments
00:10:00Mani-pedis
00:10:01While he was working day and night
00:10:03At his foot surgery centers
00:10:04To keep up with the family's lavish lifestyle
00:10:07My house was 13,000 square feet
00:10:10On 14 acres of land
00:10:12And we had tennis courts
00:10:14A pool
00:10:15A pool house
00:10:16A lake
00:10:16A dock
00:10:17Boats
00:10:18Did you have other houses?
00:10:19I had about 20 different buildings
00:10:22And houses that I would rent out
00:10:24He says Susan was the one
00:10:26Spending most of the money
00:10:27I overextended myself
00:10:29And then her spending
00:10:31Just started amplifying and amplifying
00:10:33To the point where
00:10:34You know, 40,000 a month
00:10:36On her credit cards
00:10:36Was standard operating procedure
00:10:38What was she buying?
00:10:40Everything from vacations
00:10:42She would plan
00:10:44Clothes
00:10:44Jewelry
00:10:46Ira claims he was lonely
00:10:48And resentful
00:10:49And admits he cheated on Susan
00:10:51But he says when she found out
00:10:53Instead of filing for divorce
00:10:54They decided to stay together
00:10:56With unorthodox rules
00:10:58We decided to have an open marriage
00:11:00And she could start dating people
00:11:02But he says it wasn't long
00:11:04Before Susan shut down that arrangement
00:11:06And they legally separated
00:11:07Are you on the market again?
00:11:10Are you looking now that you're separated
00:11:13From your wife?
00:11:14Yes, I'm dating a couple different girls
00:11:16And that's when he met Kelly
00:11:18She had embarked on a new career
00:11:20Selling shoe orthotics
00:11:22She was actually a patient of mine
00:11:24About four years earlier
00:11:25And so she was calling me out of the blue
00:11:27To say she'd like to meet with me
00:11:29And see if we can do business together
00:11:30She asked Ira to be part of her company
00:11:33And he agreed
00:11:34Their professional relationship
00:11:36Quickly turned personal
00:11:37Ira says he found Kelly hard to resist
00:11:40Describe her for us, like, physically
00:11:43I mean, physically she's very pretty
00:11:45She's a model
00:11:46She goes for photo shoots
00:11:48She's well built
00:11:49And she's got a sexy kind of look to her
00:11:51Ira says Kelly had gone through
00:11:53A traumatic divorce
00:11:54That left her family in tatters
00:11:57We could relate perfectly
00:11:58And I think that's why we
00:11:59Kind of meshed so quickly together
00:12:01She was a big comfort to me
00:12:03But after six months of dating Kelly
00:12:05He says he and Susan
00:12:06Decided to give their marriage
00:12:07One more try
00:12:08He was tired of spending money on lawyers
00:12:11And missed his children
00:12:12I couldn't see them enough
00:12:14I couldn't be involved in their life as much
00:12:16I was frustrated
00:12:17And I said to her
00:12:18You know what?
00:12:18If there's a chance
00:12:19We can work this out still
00:12:20I'm in
00:12:21I want to work it out
00:12:22And I told Kelly
00:12:23I feel like if I don't give it a try
00:12:25To see if I can make this work
00:12:27I'll always regret it
00:12:28And she said
00:12:29I understand
00:12:30If you need to do this
00:12:31You do it
00:12:32So if she understood
00:12:33Why was she now trying to have Susan killed?
00:12:37Three days after Kelly first approached Markenzie
00:12:39He called the detectives to alert them
00:12:41That Kelly had agreed to meet again
00:12:43And soon
00:12:45A team of detectives raced to the parking lot
00:12:48To get in position
00:12:49While Markenzie sat in his car
00:12:51So she pulls up
00:12:52As expected
00:12:53And where are you guys?
00:12:55Well we have one car close
00:12:56As close as we can get
00:12:58Another car here
00:12:59Maybe a third there
00:13:00And a fourth
00:13:01In case they leave or go somewhere
00:13:03We can follow them
00:13:04Markenzie needed to convince Kelly
00:13:06To get in his car
00:13:07To get her on tape
00:13:08And she actually gets out of the car
00:13:10And gets into that car
00:13:11We're like
00:13:12This is fantastic
00:13:13What are you hearing
00:13:14Coming from inside that car?
00:13:15Well first they greet each other
00:13:17Remember they know each other
00:13:19So there's some friendly conversation
00:13:20And then it comes around to
00:13:23The plan
00:13:24It can't be a robbery
00:13:26It can't be a shooting
00:13:26It can't be anything like that
00:13:27Kelly suggested it should look like an accident
00:13:30What I understand now
00:13:32In the car accident
00:13:33It's not 40
00:13:35It's a 50-50% chance
00:13:37He told her his men were ready
00:13:38But they needed more information
00:13:40Like details about Susan's car
00:13:42I know you told me it's a Mercedes-Benz
00:13:44What color?
00:13:45What
00:13:46Okay
00:13:46Does she work?
00:13:48No
00:13:48She at home
00:13:49Or she shot a lot
00:13:50She took a lot of money
00:13:53Then Kelly started talking money
00:13:55Had you coached Markenzie on
00:13:57How much it should be
00:13:58What he should say?
00:14:00Well we actually were trying to let her
00:14:01Matter of fact
00:14:02I think Kelly was the one
00:14:03Originally
00:14:04Brought up a price of $200,000
00:14:06To have it done
00:14:07And he was like
00:14:08He just went with it
00:14:08Okay, two?
00:14:10$200,000
00:14:12Okay
00:14:12When can we get to put that?
00:14:14This was just the first of many meetings to come
00:14:17Right, yeah
00:14:18It was a strong start
00:14:20But it wasn't enough for an arrest
00:14:22No money had changed hands
00:14:25Another meeting was in the works
00:14:27And Kelly was about to dig herself
00:14:29In deeper
00:14:53Markenzie, the car salesman
00:14:55Was now fully committed to his role as the bad guy
00:14:58Are you driving around with the cameras and microphones at all times?
00:15:01We had a switch in the trunk where we turned the equipment on and off
00:15:05I would meet with the other detectives like 20 minutes to a half hour before I meet up with her
00:15:09So we could make sure everything is up and running
00:15:13On day two of the sting operation
00:15:15Detectives waited for Kelly to show up again
00:15:17This time in a CVS parking lot
00:15:20We're figuring that no hitman's going to be one in the same exact spot every time
00:15:24So let's move it around just to change up locations to make it look more realistic
00:15:28Each time you were there?
00:15:29All the time
00:15:30We would always be multiple cars with at least two officers or two detectives in each car
00:15:37Like clockwork, Kelly pulled in and got into Markenzie's car
00:15:41They had coached him on how to handle the meeting
00:15:44We just told Markenzie, just go along with whatever she says
00:15:46First of all, you know, don't talk or enter anything
00:15:48Just go along with that
00:15:49I said, I can make that happen
00:15:51Was that like either a hit and run
00:15:53Like when she was getting out of her car
00:15:55Or like playing an accident
00:15:56So they backed up into her
00:15:57And the guy stayed and said, I didn't see her
00:16:00You know, I was playing an accident
00:16:01So there's no investigation
00:16:06Kelly wanted to move fast
00:16:08Detectives listened as she offered details on Susan's upcoming schedule
00:16:11So this weekend, she's like, she's going to a party on Saturday night
00:16:15I'm sure it's Saturday during the day
00:16:16She's going to go out to the spa
00:16:17And she's going to go out there and here and everything
00:16:20Then Kelly revealed that Susan knew all about her relationship with Ira
00:16:23In fact, she said Susan had recently texted her
00:16:28Unbelievable
00:16:28You know, because look how psycho she is
00:16:30I haven't answered
00:16:31She texted me like the last three weeks or four weeks
00:16:33Why is she texting you a little bit?
00:16:36She thinks he's with me
00:16:37Look how mean she is
00:16:38She calls me a prostitute and a slut
00:16:40Look how mean she is
00:16:42Kelly moved on to lock in a price for the hit
00:16:45So what's for the price?
00:16:46The negotiable?
00:16:48For you, I make some exceptions
00:16:51Detectives continued to listen in
00:16:53As she negotiated Markenzie from $200,000 down to $100,000
00:16:58Alright, so you'll do it for $100?
00:17:00We'll do it for $100
00:17:00But you got me after
00:17:02You know me
00:17:03If I say something, I mean it
00:17:05I'm not
00:17:05She brought up $100,000
00:17:07Let's try to get a little bit of the money
00:17:08No one's just going to do a hit
00:17:11And not give a hitman some money
00:17:12General payment?
00:17:13Yeah
00:17:14So Markenzie told her he needed good faith money
00:17:16To keep the hitman interested
00:17:19At least give me something
00:17:20Yeah
00:17:20Give me something to start
00:17:22She agreed to pay a deposit
00:17:25But at the next meeting
00:17:26She didn't bring it
00:17:27Instead
00:17:28She asked about his
00:17:30Refund policy
00:17:31Should I say, by the way
00:17:32The deposit's refundable?
00:17:34I couldn't believe she was saying it
00:17:35So she's like, hey
00:17:36Is this refundable?
00:17:37If it doesn't happen
00:17:38You know
00:17:39We were just like
00:17:39If she wants to say it's refundable
00:17:41Tell her it's refundable
00:17:42Just let it play out
00:17:43Let her try to give some money
00:17:44It wasn't all about the money
00:17:46It was about
00:17:47Getting the contract
00:17:49Negotiating
00:17:50You're good at that
00:17:50Because you're a car salesman
00:17:51Thanks
00:17:53Things were moving
00:17:54In the right direction
00:17:55But detectives were convinced
00:17:56There was more to the story
00:17:58That Kelly wasn't working alone
00:18:00She kept referring
00:18:01To someone else
00:18:02We could tell
00:18:03During the conversations
00:18:04And Kelly were like
00:18:05I need to go back
00:18:05And talk to him
00:18:06Listen, the money's not the problem
00:18:08I'm telling you right now
00:18:09The problem is
00:18:10That he's worried
00:18:11That he's going to get
00:18:12Investigated
00:18:13He'll break down
00:18:14He's so weak right now
00:18:15He won't be able
00:18:16To handle interrogation
00:18:17But Kelly was essentially
00:18:19Doing all the dirty work
00:18:20She was the point person
00:18:22And eventually
00:18:22We actually do a wiretap
00:18:24On our phone too
00:18:25So she was totally
00:18:27Committed to the crime already
00:18:28And we already had her
00:18:29And now we just needed
00:18:30To make sure
00:18:30That he commits as well
00:18:32By now the detectives
00:18:33Were pretty sure
00:18:34They knew who he was
00:18:36But they needed him
00:18:37To meet with Markenzie
00:18:38And soon
00:18:39They learned Kelly
00:18:40And her accomplice
00:18:41Had approached other people
00:18:42About murdering Susan
00:18:46They had talked to
00:18:47Maybe two or three other people
00:18:48Kelly was the one
00:18:49Putting it out there
00:18:50Hey, do you know anybody
00:18:51That can help me
00:18:51How did you learn
00:18:52That she had been
00:18:52Talking to other people
00:18:53It just came up
00:18:54During the investigation
00:18:55She actually mentioned it
00:18:56During conversation
00:18:57With Markenzie
00:18:58Who were these other people
00:19:00One person that Kelly
00:19:01Worked with
00:19:01A long time ago
00:19:02Another person
00:19:03That Markenzie knew
00:19:05From a car dealership once
00:19:06And a daughter of a nanny
00:19:08And they all said no?
00:19:10Yeah, they all just
00:19:11You know
00:19:12They blew it off
00:19:13Like, you know
00:19:13This is for real
00:19:14Like, you know
00:19:14This is kind of weird
00:19:15You know
00:19:16I'm not getting involved
00:19:17With this
00:19:17So while this plot
00:19:18Is unfolding
00:19:19Are you telling Susan
00:19:21That she could be a target?
00:19:23No
00:19:24No
00:19:25We didn't at that time
00:19:26Because we weren't sure
00:19:27What would happen
00:19:28Meaning like she might
00:19:29Blow it or
00:19:30The sting?
00:19:32She might, you know
00:19:32Take off
00:19:33For her own reasons
00:19:35You know
00:19:35Did you worry about Susan?
00:19:37Sure
00:19:37Absolutely, that's right
00:19:38And we would always
00:19:39Have Markenzie
00:19:40Occasionally say
00:19:40Hey, are you shopping
00:19:41Around me?
00:19:41Is there anybody else?
00:19:42Again, we were up
00:19:43On Kelly's phone
00:19:44So we know she's safe
00:19:45So you had this
00:19:45Inside intel
00:19:47That was kind of
00:19:48Giving you that
00:19:49Sense that
00:19:50Susan's okay right now
00:19:51Yes
00:19:52We felt safe
00:19:53That we were controlling this
00:19:54They asked Markenzie
00:19:56To push Kelly
00:19:56For a meeting
00:19:57With her partner
00:20:02And Kelly
00:20:03Was about to deliver
00:20:05All of a sudden
00:20:06I think he's pulling in
00:20:07He finally showed
00:20:08Right, so then we're all
00:20:09Like, you know
00:20:10Ducking because we don't
00:20:11Want him to see us
00:20:25As Ramapo detectives
00:20:27Continued to investigate
00:20:28The plot to kill
00:20:29Susan Bernstein
00:20:30They focused on
00:20:31Flushing out Kelly's partner
00:20:33So far
00:20:34She was the only one
00:20:35Who'd shown up
00:20:36To arrange the hit
00:20:37We wanted to make sure
00:20:38That it wasn't just
00:20:40Kelly saying it
00:20:41So it was important
00:20:43To have him
00:20:43Come to the scene
00:20:45Detectives suspected
00:20:46He was the one in charge
00:20:48Especially when it came
00:20:49To the money
00:20:50He's not comfortable
00:20:51With giving the 50
00:20:52But he's going to give
00:20:53Everything when it's done
00:20:55Is that okay with you?
00:20:57I mean, he's not
00:20:57Listen
00:20:57He's not going to
00:20:59F*** the killers
00:21:00Markenzie kept asking
00:21:01To meet him
00:21:02And then one evening
00:21:03It happened
00:21:04A few days into
00:21:05The investigation
00:21:06They both showed up
00:21:08All of a sudden
00:21:09I think he's pulling in
00:21:10He finally showed
00:21:10Right, so then
00:21:11We're all like
00:21:12You know, ducking
00:21:13Because we don't want
00:21:13Him to see us
00:21:14Who was the other person?
00:21:16That was Ira Bernstein
00:21:18Kelly's lover
00:21:19And the police foot surgeon
00:21:21Is that just blowing your mind
00:21:23That it's Ira?
00:21:25Well, one of the funny things is
00:21:26We were both patients
00:21:27A long time ago
00:21:27Now we had to be concerned
00:21:29Is he going to recognize us
00:21:31When we're doing these
00:21:32Surveillances
00:21:33Kelly and Ira
00:21:34Didn't get in the car
00:21:35So Markenzie got out
00:21:39Hey, how are you?
00:21:40Hey, how's up?
00:21:41Hi, good to meet you
00:21:42How are you?
00:21:43They could hear Ira
00:21:44Say he was worried
00:21:45About incriminating messages
00:21:46Kelly had been sending
00:21:47Markenzie on Facebook Messenger
00:21:49So my concern is
00:21:50That it's Facebook
00:21:52Thinking on his feet
00:21:53Markenzie assured Ira
00:21:55The messages weren't a problem
00:21:56Even though that wasn't true
00:21:59Data, you can't really
00:22:00Trace data
00:22:01You could see how much
00:22:01Data you use
00:22:02And you can't see
00:22:03You're saying that they can't
00:22:05It's not text messages
00:22:06They say I want to see it
00:22:07And it's not
00:22:08You could see text messages
00:22:09You could see
00:22:10Text messages you can't
00:22:11Yeah, exactly
00:22:11You can't see this
00:22:12You can't see data
00:22:14Kelly, still outside
00:22:16Said she was getting cold
00:22:17I need to fit in the car
00:22:21Myron
00:22:22He actually got in the car
00:22:23With the informant
00:22:24It was a game changer
00:22:28Back then
00:22:28Richard Moran
00:22:29Richard Moran
00:22:30Was a Rockland County
00:22:30Executive Assistant DA
00:22:32He was on the case
00:22:33From the beginning
00:22:35So we just give you
00:22:36The rest afterwards
00:22:36Whatever makes you
00:22:38Feel comfortable
00:22:39Once it's done
00:22:40Obviously it's not
00:22:40A problem at all
00:22:41Yeah, I think
00:22:42So ASAP
00:22:43The lesser you two know
00:22:45The better you
00:22:46Right, I agree
00:22:47Wasn't that enough
00:22:48To arrest him
00:22:48Right then and there?
00:22:49No money had been
00:22:50Exchanged
00:22:51In New York
00:22:52You do need
00:22:53An overt act
00:22:54And we had
00:22:55We had some stuff
00:22:56But we did not
00:22:56Want to jump the gun
00:22:57On this
00:22:58When Ira hesitated
00:22:59About going through
00:23:00With the hit
00:23:01Markenzie calmly
00:23:02Told him he had
00:23:03To make a decision
00:23:04No, I know
00:23:05I know
00:23:07Obviously I'm scared
00:23:09No s***
00:23:10This has been done
00:23:11Smoothly multiple times
00:23:13Already
00:23:13That has nothing
00:23:14To do with you
00:23:15I would never
00:23:16Have this conversation
00:23:17You've never met me
00:23:18You've never met me
00:23:19And we don't know
00:23:19Each other
00:23:20And I have no idea
00:23:21Who you are
00:23:21That's why I told her
00:23:23I was trying to keep
00:23:24You as much out of this
00:23:25I know, I know
00:23:27All right
00:23:28All right
00:23:28Let me fuck the kill
00:23:29For a second
00:23:29Very fast, all right
00:23:33Ira never came back
00:23:35A little while later
00:23:36Kelly hopped back in
00:23:39Okay
00:23:39He feels too bad
00:23:41But he gave me the money
00:23:42And he said that
00:23:44He wants me to hold it
00:23:45He wants to know
00:23:46He wants you to know
00:23:47That I have the money
00:23:48But until he makes
00:23:50A decision
00:23:50He's like
00:23:52Now what
00:23:53He's scared
00:23:54What should I do
00:23:55I can understand
00:23:56It's a natural thing
00:23:58I can understand that
00:24:00But at the end of the day
00:24:01That's not the way
00:24:02Of the business
00:24:03Markenzie asked her again
00:24:04For a deposit
00:24:05If you give it to me
00:24:06Now if I have money
00:24:07In my hand
00:24:08I can show my guys
00:24:09That okay
00:24:10You know what
00:24:10Definitely the business
00:24:11Is ready to go
00:24:12We gotta move on
00:24:13I can't push him to do it
00:24:14Huh?
00:24:15I can't push him to do it
00:24:16I'm not asking you to
00:24:17He's the boss, right?
00:24:19Kelly said Ira
00:24:20Was worried about his children
00:24:21And what would happen
00:24:22After their mother died
00:24:23I was thinking like
00:24:24How am I gonna take care
00:24:25Of my kids?
00:24:26That's what I have a name for
00:24:29She saw another life for her
00:24:30I think
00:24:31Her and Ira
00:24:31Were gonna just live together
00:24:32And be happy
00:24:34You know
00:24:34I don't think she pictured
00:24:35The negative side of it
00:24:38Of the children
00:24:38Always not having their real mother
00:24:40She'd brought up the topic
00:24:42In an earlier meeting
00:24:43What am I gonna do?
00:24:44I have to be a parent
00:24:46I said I'll help you
00:24:48I'm not trying to
00:24:49I'm not trying to be a parent
00:24:50I said anything
00:24:51They're kids
00:24:52I don't know if
00:24:54In your religion
00:24:55You do that
00:24:55Take him somewhere
00:24:56To have fun
00:24:57Trust me
00:24:57That's what I said
00:24:58Take him to an arcade
00:25:00Or something
00:25:01Let him play basketball
00:25:02Let him play games
00:25:03If they want to
00:25:03Chuck E. Cheese
00:25:04That's exactly what I said
00:25:06She talked about
00:25:07One time
00:25:07With Markenzie in the car
00:25:08She's like
00:25:09We're gonna have such parties
00:25:10After this
00:25:10When this is over
00:25:11And then another time
00:25:12She felt guilt
00:25:13Because she's sitting in the car
00:25:14And she's like
00:25:15Am I gonna go to hell
00:25:16For this
00:25:37Markenzie arranged another meeting
00:25:39Hoping Ira would show again
00:25:41He didn't
00:25:42But something big happened
00:25:43How are you?
00:25:46So I have a thing
00:25:47That we talked about
00:25:48And
00:25:50It's a deposit
00:25:51Like we spoke about
00:25:51Cold, hard cash
00:25:53Exactly what the investigators needed
00:25:55But before Kelly handed it over
00:25:58She wanted to talk again
00:25:59About how Susan would be killed
00:26:01The staged accident
00:26:02Turns out
00:26:03It was something Kelly knew all about
00:26:06She'd accidentally run over
00:26:08And killed someone
00:26:09When she was a teenager
00:26:10I was in an accident before
00:26:12I had a stake
00:26:15He ran by my car
00:26:16They took
00:26:17They took
00:26:17My car was impounded
00:26:20I was taken
00:26:21With the police car
00:26:21To the police station
00:26:22I was given
00:26:23Blood tests
00:26:24Drugs tests
00:26:25Everything
00:26:26It sounded very much
00:26:28Like the plan
00:26:28She proposed
00:26:29At their prior meeting
00:26:30Is there any way
00:26:31Anyone can hit her
00:26:32And then say
00:26:33And say it was an accident
00:26:34And take responsibility
00:26:35And just say
00:26:36Look I didn't see her
00:26:37It was an accident
00:26:39Clearly
00:26:39We can make that happen
00:26:41Now
00:26:42Once again
00:26:43He reassured her
00:26:44That was the plan
00:26:45The accident's gonna happen
00:26:46Somebody's gonna stay on the scene
00:26:49With that
00:26:49Kelly reached into her purse
00:26:51Pulled out a wad of cash
00:26:53And handed it to Markenzie
00:26:55So how much we're talking
00:26:56Right now
00:26:57Two
00:26:57Two thousand
00:27:03And how is he gonna bring the rest
00:27:05How?
00:27:06Cash
00:27:07How much
00:27:08What did we say
00:27:09A hundred?
00:27:10Mm-hmm
00:27:10So ninety-eight
00:27:11Okay
00:27:14Nothing
00:27:14Nothing until
00:27:16We give you the go-ahead
00:27:19He said
00:27:19Just be on standby
00:27:22Once she turned that money over
00:27:24That was the next step
00:27:25We had
00:27:26Kelly locked in now
00:27:27So Kelly's cooked
00:27:28Correct
00:27:30But detectives
00:27:31Didn't arrest her then
00:27:32Because they still
00:27:33Didn't have enough
00:27:33On Ira
00:27:34And just as they were about to get it
00:27:37Kelly dropped a bombshell
00:27:39We were like
00:27:40Oh no
00:27:40This is right in the middle
00:27:41Of our investigation here
00:27:42This could destroy it
00:27:57As detectives waited for Ira and Kelly to give the go-ahead to have Susan killed
00:28:02Their investigation took a dramatic turn
00:28:05The couple had their sights on two new targets
00:28:09Kelly shows up to one of the meetings and says
00:28:12He hasn't committed yet
00:28:14But he wants you to take care of two insurance investigators
00:28:18So all of a sudden we're like
00:28:20Where is this going?
00:28:21Take care of as in?
00:28:23Well
00:28:23Kill them?
00:28:24He didn't want them killed
00:28:25He wanted them to kind of be taught a lesson
00:28:28And that would entail what?
00:28:31She basically said
00:28:32We need to have these two investigators beat up
00:28:34They were investigating him
00:28:35And right away we assumed
00:28:37It was something to do with his medical profession
00:28:39Maybe he's doing something fraud
00:28:40Insurance claims
00:28:41That they wanted
00:28:42Yeah, they're from an insurance company
00:28:44You know
00:28:44They wanted these two guys beat up
00:28:46And it had to be ASAP
00:28:48And right away we're like
00:28:49Oh no
00:28:49This is right in the middle of our investigation
00:28:51This could destroy it
00:28:52They might be testing us
00:28:53We're testing Markenzie
00:28:56Detectives wondered if this new job
00:28:57Was a way for the couple
00:28:58To see if Markenzie was the real deal
00:29:00And Kelly asked him
00:29:02Are you a police officer?
00:29:03You're sure you're not valid with police, right?
00:29:06We believe that they don't think
00:29:08That someone working with the police
00:29:09Would actually have two innocent people
00:29:12Just doing their job beat up
00:29:14And they were willing to pay quickly
00:29:16To get it done
00:29:17Kelly and Markenzie had agreed on a $5,000 fee
00:29:21She handed him a brown bag
00:29:23Filled with $2,500 in cash
00:29:25Half now
00:29:26Half after the job was done
00:29:29So he wanted to make sure
00:29:30They're out of commission for a long time
00:29:32Any possibility could be done in the state or not?
00:29:35Detective Luzan reached out
00:29:36To the insurance investigators
00:29:38And discovered why they
00:29:39Were in the couple's crosshairs
00:29:41I called them
00:29:43And said listen
00:29:43I really want to speak to you in person
00:29:45I didn't want to tell them over the phone
00:29:46They said well we're coming to Rockland anyway
00:29:47Because we have an investigation
00:29:49Into Ira Bernstein
00:29:51Luzan says they were investigating
00:29:53Ira for insurance fraud
00:29:54Suspecting that he'd been padding
00:29:56His insurance claims
00:29:57How did these insurance investigators feel
00:30:00When you told them
00:30:00That there's this plot out
00:30:03To have you beaten up?
00:30:04They couldn't believe it
00:30:05They were shocked
00:30:06And then they were very concerned
00:30:07The detective asked the investigators
00:30:09For their help
00:30:10This is where this whole story
00:30:12Goes a little bit Hollywood
00:30:13Yeah literally
00:30:14We all got together
00:30:16And came up with an idea
00:30:16Like listen
00:30:18This might sound crazy
00:30:19But maybe we can get
00:30:19A makeup artist
00:30:21Make it look like
00:30:22They were actually beat up
00:30:23How did they react
00:30:24To this idea?
00:30:24I think one of them
00:30:25Was like I gotta talk to my wife first
00:30:27But they agreed
00:30:29Police set up in this parking lot
00:30:31Next to the insurance investigator's office
00:30:34They had two undercover officers
00:30:36Pretend to throw punches
00:30:38And we took a lot of pictures
00:30:39Of them beating them up
00:30:41And we had to actually tell the investigators
00:30:43Like don't overdo it
00:30:44Just fight back a little bit
00:30:45They took pictures from every angle
00:30:47Then had to choose
00:30:49Which ones to show Kelly and Ira
00:30:50We're being like editors
00:30:52We're trying to figure out
00:30:53Which looks
00:30:53Which looks the most real
00:30:54Right the most real
00:30:56Like and it was funny
00:30:57We just kept going back and forth
00:30:59On which ones we should choose
00:31:00This is a huge moment in our case
00:31:02You know in that
00:31:02If they believe this ruse
00:31:04About the beating up the investigators
00:31:06Then we can probably get to the big thing
00:31:09With you know
00:31:09Where he's trying to kill Susan
00:31:10I think once this is done
00:31:12They'll feel more comfortable
00:31:13To move ahead with that right away
00:31:15Awesome
00:31:16Now the pressure was on the car salesman
00:31:19He texted Kelly to meet him
00:31:21He had three photos
00:31:23Tucked inside a newspaper
00:31:24Ready to show her
00:31:25And we had coached him ahead of time
00:31:27No matter what happens
00:31:28She's probably going to say
00:31:29I want to take these pictures to Ira
00:31:31Like you know we don't
00:31:32We want Ira to come out
00:31:33You know we need him to start
00:31:35You know him to commit
00:31:36No matter what happens
00:31:37You make sure that
00:31:38The pictures stay with you
00:31:40Everyone was in place
00:31:41Waiting
00:31:42Kelly was late
00:31:43Then she finally showed
00:31:50With his heart pounding
00:31:51Markenzie showed her the photos
00:32:04She seemed satisfied
00:32:06And just as the detectives predicted
00:32:08Kelly asked to take the photos
00:32:10To show Ira
00:32:23Markenzie followed the detectives instructions perfectly
00:32:25But then he came up with an idea
00:32:27All on his own
00:32:28He knew law enforcement wanted Ira
00:32:30So he told Kelly to call him
00:32:43So he suggested to Ira
00:32:45That he could swing by his office
00:32:47To show the doctor the photos in person
00:33:08It sounded like the perfect plan
00:33:10But is there really ever such a thing?
00:33:13Are you on the edge of your seats
00:33:15When he's pointing to that camera?
00:33:16Oh yeah
00:33:17Are you kidding me?
00:33:18You know this is it
00:33:20He's looking right at the camera
00:33:21When we're done
00:33:35The murder for hire plot
00:33:36Had taken a detour
00:33:38For now
00:33:39It was assault for hire
00:33:41Markenzie the informant
00:33:42Waited outside of Ira's medical practice
00:33:44To show him pictures
00:33:45To show him pictures
00:33:45Of the insurance investigators
00:33:48This is when you need Ira
00:33:50To come to the car
00:33:52Yeah Ira's already
00:33:53Shown his face once already
00:33:55You know now we need Ira to come out
00:33:57This is a huge moment in our case
00:34:00Markenzie convinced Ira
00:34:01To see the proof
00:34:02That the insurance investigators
00:34:04Had been beaten up
00:34:05We're going to have the doctor
00:34:06Look at the pictures
00:34:07And this is going to commit him
00:34:08To the assault
00:34:09And the investigators
00:34:11Here are Ira and Kelly
00:34:13Walking toward Markenzie's car
00:34:14The doctor comes out of his office
00:34:17He's in his scrubs
00:34:18Goes into the car
00:34:19Hey how's it going?
00:34:20How are you?
00:34:21Over
00:34:24As soon as he got in the car
00:34:25I turn around
00:34:26I look at her
00:34:27And I say
00:34:28Can you excuse us for a minute?
00:34:30Why did you want her out?
00:34:31To know if it was her
00:34:33Putting the ideas in his head
00:34:35If it was her motivating him
00:34:38To do all that
00:34:39So she could jump in
00:34:40And inherit the money
00:34:42Did she leave?
00:34:43Yeah she did
00:34:44So you two are now
00:34:46Man to man
00:34:47With him yeah
00:34:48What's he saying?
00:34:50He said
00:34:50You got them?
00:34:51I said yeah
00:34:52I got them
00:34:53Definitely them
00:34:54Definitely them
00:34:56Markenzie showed him
00:34:57The three photos
00:34:57But Ira immediately
00:34:59Seemed suspicious
00:35:01They have me standing
00:35:02Right next to each other
00:35:03Yeah
00:35:03I guess they want a break
00:35:05Or something
00:35:06It looks like
00:35:07And he's like
00:35:08Why are they wearing
00:35:10Baseball cap
00:35:11And you know
00:35:12Regular jacket
00:35:14I said I don't know
00:35:15You're really having to
00:35:16Think on your feet
00:35:18To distract Ira
00:35:19Markenzie changed the subject
00:35:20And told him he needed
00:35:22To keep the photos
00:35:23I don't want to give them
00:35:24To be blessed
00:35:24I don't need them
00:35:25What do I need them for?
00:35:26I don't give them
00:35:28As long as it's done
00:35:29And done correctly
00:35:29I just don't want them
00:35:30Showing it to work
00:35:30Anytime soon
00:35:31Yeah exactly
00:35:32No no no
00:35:33It's all full
00:35:34At this point
00:35:35Ira seemed satisfied
00:35:36He's like
00:35:37Okay good good
00:35:38And we're like
00:35:39It's a big relief
00:35:42Remember if he thinks
00:35:43They're fake
00:35:43Now he's really gonna
00:35:45Think something's up here
00:35:46Detectives had coached
00:35:47Markenzie on what to do
00:35:48After he showed
00:35:49Ira the pictures
00:35:51Ask him what's going on
00:35:52With the wife
00:35:53Or give him a deadline
00:35:54Say listen
00:35:54It has to be by this time
00:35:55Or we're walking away
00:35:57You know
00:35:57But it has to be his decision
00:35:58Don't force him to do anything
00:36:00So now the big question is
00:36:02When is the next job
00:36:04Give me a week
00:36:05It's better
00:36:05All right
00:36:07And I'll
00:36:08I'll give you to go ahead
00:36:09Don't want to be too pushy
00:36:11I know
00:36:11I know
00:36:11I'll give you by this weekend
00:36:13Okay
00:36:14Well I'm gonna be away
00:36:15For the weekend
00:36:15But at the end of the weekend
00:36:17I'll tell you
00:36:17Okay
00:36:18Then the good doctor
00:36:20Said what law enforcement
00:36:21Was waiting to hear
00:36:22So if I
00:36:23I'll tell her
00:36:24If she gives you the okay
00:36:24Then it came from me
00:36:26To detectives ears
00:36:27Ira was admitting
00:36:29He was the one
00:36:30Pulling the strings
00:36:31Not Kelly
00:36:32It was a critical moment
00:36:35But just as they were ready
00:36:36To high five each other
00:36:37Ira turned around
00:36:38And pointed to something
00:36:39In the back seat
00:36:43He was looking
00:36:44Directly at the hidden camera
00:36:46Are you on the edge
00:36:48Of your seats
00:36:48When he's pointing
00:36:49To that camera
00:36:50Oh yeah
00:36:51Are you kidding me
00:36:52This is it
00:36:52He's looking right
00:36:53At the camera
00:36:53When we're done
00:36:54Do you have a little
00:36:55Moment of panic
00:36:56Oh yeah
00:36:56My heart just dropped
00:36:59And obviously
00:37:01With my training
00:37:02I get to pick it
00:37:02Right back up
00:37:04Markenzie does a great job
00:37:05He leans back
00:37:06And goes
00:37:07Oh that's something
00:37:07For the kids games
00:37:08Where they plug into it
00:37:09And that's the receiver
00:37:11For the headsets
00:37:12That's the receiver
00:37:13For the headsets
00:37:13The receiver for headsets
00:37:14Alright
00:37:15Alright
00:37:18Whatever it is
00:37:19I tell him
00:37:20He believes it
00:37:21Because the only thing
00:37:22That was in his head
00:37:23Is how
00:37:24He wants to get
00:37:25With this thing done
00:37:27Crisis averted
00:37:28Then without skipping a beat
00:37:30Ira moved on to the details
00:37:32Of how Susan should be killed
00:37:33Agreeing she would be hit by a car
00:37:36A freak accident
00:37:37Happen every day
00:37:39Right
00:37:39Exactly
00:37:40Nice and clean
00:37:41No problems
00:37:42Very smooth
00:37:43Really smooth
00:37:44Got no worries
00:37:45Nothing
00:37:46Nothing
00:37:47Then I get back
00:37:52Ira leaves
00:37:53Ira leaves
00:37:53But you don't
00:37:54Quite
00:37:55Have what you need yet
00:37:57You're not all the way there
00:37:58You haven't crossed
00:37:59The finish line
00:38:00Yeah
00:38:00They needed Ira
00:38:02To give the final
00:38:03Okay for his wife's murder
00:38:04Five days later
00:38:06Kelly set up a meeting
00:38:07Finally she calls
00:38:09Hey
00:38:09Let's have another talk
00:38:11Let's have another meet
00:38:11At the Walmart
00:38:12Like this is going to be the answer
00:38:14Is it going to be yes or no
00:38:15If it's a no
00:38:16It's a good thing for Ira Bernstein
00:38:18That he's not going to kill
00:38:19The mother of his children
00:38:20So be it
00:38:21And part of us were actually
00:38:23Morally there was a little part of us
00:38:24That was hoping
00:38:25Maybe he won't go that far
00:38:27Maybe he'll step back
00:38:28And say this is just wrong
00:38:29Definitely
00:38:29You know
00:38:30Because we did know him
00:38:31And we're hoping
00:38:32Maybe he'll say no
00:38:33That's a happier ending
00:38:34Right
00:38:35So what would the ending be
00:38:38Later that day
00:38:39She shows up again
00:38:40In the Walmart parking lot
00:38:41This time she won't get into the car
00:38:44Detectives were worried
00:38:45Since Ira may have been
00:38:47Onto their hidden camera
00:38:48He could have warned Kelly
00:38:49To stay out of the car
00:38:50So is that game over
00:38:52No it's not game over
00:38:53Because we have audio
00:38:54On Markenzie himself
00:38:56But then she said
00:38:57There was a problem
00:38:58With that
00:38:59These are a few confirmed
00:39:01Huh?
00:39:02Red flag
00:39:02What?
00:39:04Was the detective's plan
00:39:06About to unravel?
00:39:07Did we miss it?
00:39:08Did we miss it?
00:39:08We're like
00:39:09What just happened?
00:39:11What happened
00:39:12Was far more complicated
00:39:13Than it seemed
00:39:14At least that's what
00:39:16Ira and Kelly say
00:39:17Did you want
00:39:18Susan Bernstein dead?
00:39:33Standing outside the informant's car
00:39:35Kelly was about to give
00:39:36Their final answer
00:39:38A yes or a no
00:39:39For the hit
00:39:40On Susan Bernstein
00:39:41Then she hesitated
00:39:43She told Markenzie
00:39:44Ira had been checking up
00:39:46On the insurance investigators
00:39:47To make sure
00:39:48They'd actually been beaten up
00:40:07Despite all of her reservations
00:40:09Detectives listened
00:40:11As Kelly spoke again
00:40:13Okay so
00:40:15The answer is this
00:40:16We don't hear any answer
00:40:17Did we miss it?
00:40:18Did we miss it?
00:40:19Like we heard him say
00:40:20Okay well what's the next step
00:40:21And we're like
00:40:22What just happened?
00:40:23She's holding up a phone
00:40:25She had typed the word yes
00:40:27Inside the phone
00:40:27So she wasn't verbally
00:40:28Going to say it
00:40:30But it didn't matter
00:40:32Detectives now had confirmation
00:40:33Ira and Kelly were in
00:40:35And the date was set
00:40:36The couple believed
00:40:37Susan would be run over
00:40:39In four days
00:40:40The prosecutor was ready
00:40:42To green light their arrests
00:40:43Once Kelly says yes
00:40:45And agrees to give him money
00:40:48The investigation is
00:40:50For the most part
00:40:51Complete
00:40:53Detectives moved in on Kelly
00:40:54At the Walmart parking lot
00:40:56And how did this go down?
00:40:57Was it like a SWAT situation?
00:40:59Was it just a couple of officers?
00:41:00It was
00:41:01Well there were several officers
00:41:02In plainclothes
00:41:03Surrounding the area
00:41:04But it was just two officers
00:41:05Who approached her
00:41:06She was shocked
00:41:07Yeah she was shocked
00:41:08Actually I went to the door
00:41:09And I said
00:41:10You know I believe
00:41:10You know what this is
00:41:11Going to be about
00:41:12When Kelly entered
00:41:13The police station
00:41:14Another staged Hollywood moment
00:41:16Was waiting for her
00:41:18Detectives had
00:41:19Markenzie the informant
00:41:20Handcuffed
00:41:21Sitting in a holding room
00:41:23She saw him in there
00:41:24I saw her eyes
00:41:25Meet his eyes
00:41:26And I was alright
00:41:27So now she knows
00:41:27The supposed hitman's arrested
00:41:29The gig is up
00:41:30Maybe she'll come back
00:41:31And talk to us
00:41:33Turn around
00:41:34Do you have any weapons
00:41:35Or anything on you?
00:41:36No
00:41:36They hope that seeing
00:41:37Markenzie in custody
00:41:38Might be enough
00:41:38To get Kelly talking
00:41:39Do you understand
00:41:40Each of these rights
00:41:41That I have to find you?
00:41:43But after reading her
00:41:44Her rights
00:41:45You're in some trouble
00:41:46I'm not gonna lie to you
00:41:47Kelly let the detectives
00:41:49Do most of the talking
00:41:50They told her
00:41:51She was caught on tape
00:41:52Planning the hit
00:41:53Then they tried to
00:41:54Convince her
00:41:54To turn on Ira
00:41:56I don't know
00:41:56I don't know if you're
00:41:56I don't know if you're
00:41:56Worried about him
00:41:57But right now
00:41:58Kelly should be
00:41:58Worried about Kelly
00:41:59Right
00:41:59So right now
00:42:00Are you in trouble?
00:42:01Obviously
00:42:01You're in a police
00:42:02Formant
00:42:03Right
00:42:03I want you to just
00:42:04Focus on like
00:42:05On you
00:42:06And remember
00:42:07I gotta do what's best
00:42:08From me
00:42:09Because in the end
00:42:10You don't want
00:42:11You know
00:42:12Something like
00:42:13You take all the fault
00:42:15We know that
00:42:16Don't make me answer
00:42:18These questions
00:42:18Hold on
00:42:19Look at me
00:42:20Look at me
00:42:20Kelly
00:42:20It's too hard
00:42:21Okay
00:42:21It's not too hard
00:42:23They changed tactics
00:42:24And revealed that
00:42:25Markenzie had been
00:42:26Working undercover with them
00:42:27Well like
00:42:28Did you see
00:42:28Markenzie?
00:42:29I said Markenzie's with us
00:42:31And
00:42:32Then I go out
00:42:33And we actually
00:42:34Bring Mark
00:42:34We bring Markenzie
00:42:35To the room
00:42:36What did she say?
00:42:37She was just like
00:42:38Her jaw was on the floor
00:42:39She was like shocked
00:42:41I think he's with us
00:42:43He's not
00:42:43We just put up there
00:42:44So that you would see that
00:42:45But he's with us
00:42:46Alright
00:42:47Is that the truth Markenzie?
00:42:49It's true
00:42:49Okay
00:42:51So I'm not lying to you
00:42:52Alright
00:42:53Alright thanks
00:42:54I'll talk to you in a bit
00:42:56He's not under wraps
00:42:57So now who's the only one
00:42:58That's here
00:42:59In trouble right now
00:43:01Who is it?
00:43:02You
00:43:03But instead of coming clean
00:43:05She blamed Markenzie
00:43:08Why was he so
00:43:09Pressuring us?
00:43:10Why was he
00:43:11No no no no
00:43:12Don't even play that act
00:43:13With me
00:43:13You did not get pressured
00:43:15We did everything you can
00:43:16To let you guys
00:43:17Walk away from this
00:43:18When pointing the finger
00:43:20At the car salesman
00:43:20Didn't work
00:43:21Kelly went after
00:43:22Ira's wife
00:43:23Susan
00:43:24I really wanted
00:43:25For him to divorce her
00:43:28But it wouldn't have helped
00:43:31She would have been worse
00:43:32She would have tried to get him
00:43:34I was actually scared for my life
00:43:35If you look at my phone
00:43:36I didn't even respond
00:43:38To her messages
00:43:39She called me all kinds of names
00:43:41And all these kinds of nasty things
00:43:43That she would say to me
00:43:44And she would follow me
00:43:46And she poured coffee all over my coat
00:43:49My coat is still in the cleaners
00:43:52She would harass me
00:43:53And I never
00:43:54Ever
00:43:55Did anything back to her
00:43:56I never
00:43:57Kelly was willing to throw
00:43:58Everyone under the bus
00:43:59Except Ira
00:44:01Be honest with us
00:44:03Was that your money
00:44:03Or was it Ira's money
00:44:06Kelly
00:44:07I understand
00:44:07Don't make me answer
00:44:08I know you love him
00:44:09I understand that
00:44:11Kelly
00:44:12Do yourself a favor
00:44:13Okay
00:44:13Just be honest
00:44:15Is that bad
00:44:16To be honest
00:44:17I'll be honest
00:44:17I love him
00:44:19Has he ever said
00:44:20He loves you
00:44:22Kelly
00:44:24You know why I'm asking that
00:44:26Because I'm on the phone
00:44:26I was listening
00:44:28Not one time
00:44:30Did I ever hear him say
00:44:31I love you
00:44:32A few hours later
00:44:33On his way home
00:44:34From a dinner in New York City
00:44:3642-year-old Ira Bernstein
00:44:37Was pulled over
00:44:38Near his house
00:44:39And arrested
00:44:42And he was so nervous
00:44:43He was shaking away
00:44:44He was saying
00:44:44My life is over, right
00:44:46My life is over
00:44:47I think he said
00:44:48I should just kill myself
00:44:48At that point
00:44:49A little later on
00:44:50That night
00:44:53We'll be so many
00:44:53In a few minutes
00:44:54Let you know
00:44:55What's going on
00:44:57Oh my god
00:44:59How big is this
00:44:59Does that have to do with medicine?
00:45:00What's that?
00:45:00Does that have to do with medicine?
00:45:02I don't know nothing about medicine
00:45:03I'm not locking anybody up
00:45:04For something to do with medicine
00:45:07Isn't that someone else
00:45:08That does that?
00:45:08Am I going to be in newspapers?
00:45:10Honestly?
00:45:11Ira
00:45:11I couldn't tell you
00:45:12I'm not finished
00:45:16I'll practice again
00:45:18Ira and Kelly
00:45:20Were charged with conspiracy
00:45:21And solicitation
00:45:22To commit murder
00:45:23But if you ask Ira
00:45:25There is far more
00:45:26To this story
00:45:28He made it
00:45:29Very clear
00:45:30That we were going to be fed
00:45:32To the alligators
00:45:33If we didn't go through
00:45:34With this
00:45:49While out on bail
00:45:50In 2017
00:45:51Ira Bernstein
00:45:52Agreed to sit down
00:45:53With Dateline
00:45:54There was no way
00:45:55In hell
00:45:56I was ever going
00:45:57To go through with this
00:45:58And hurt Susan
00:45:59He says the video
00:46:01Of him planning
00:46:01His wife's murder
00:46:02Was just a snapshot
00:46:03Of a bigger picture
00:46:04Yeah I think
00:46:05So ASAT
00:46:06The lesser
00:46:07You two know
00:46:08The better
00:46:09I agree
00:46:10That there was
00:46:11So much more
00:46:12To the story
00:46:12Things had reached
00:46:14A horrible point
00:46:15I was living
00:46:15Under horrible stress
00:46:17The downward spiral
00:46:19Began he says
00:46:20After he and Susan
00:46:21Decided to have
00:46:21An open marriage
00:46:22And I think
00:46:23We're getting along great
00:46:24But what she's doing
00:46:25Is she's plotting
00:46:26She cleaned out
00:46:28The bank accounts
00:46:29She took the jewelry
00:46:32She took the kids
00:46:34And she went
00:46:34To her parents' house
00:46:35In Maryland
00:46:37After that
00:46:37Ira says police
00:46:38Knocked on his door
00:46:39Susan had filed
00:46:41A restraining order
00:46:42The sheriff gives me
00:46:4320 minutes to pack my stuff
00:46:44Whatever I could grab
00:46:46I am escorted
00:46:47Out of my house
00:46:49I wind up
00:46:50In my parents' house
00:46:50Living in my old
00:46:51High school bedroom
00:46:52This is the marriage
00:46:53From hell at this point
00:46:54This is now
00:46:54The marriage from hell
00:46:56Ira says Susan
00:46:57Claimed he was physically
00:46:58And verbally abusive
00:46:59To her and their children
00:47:01I am the least abusive
00:47:03Person in the world
00:47:04I don't even discipline
00:47:05My children
00:47:06Okay
00:47:06They walk all over me
00:47:08Like I'm a teddy bear
00:47:10Several months later
00:47:11Susan withdrew
00:47:12The restraining order
00:47:13And Ira says
00:47:14She wanted to reconcile
00:47:15He agreed to try
00:47:16But soon enough
00:47:18The fighting flared up
00:47:19And that's when
00:47:20He fell for Kelly
00:47:21And at this point
00:47:22I had already hired her
00:47:23And she's working for me
00:47:24What's she doing for you?
00:47:25Everything
00:47:26She is literally
00:47:28Doing everything
00:47:29From scheduling
00:47:31My appointments
00:47:31We were looking
00:47:32At properties
00:47:33We were negotiating things
00:47:34She was helping
00:47:35Run the practice
00:47:36A little bit
00:47:36And she was helping
00:47:37Me in my house too
00:47:38I mean she would
00:47:39Help me go shopping
00:47:40She would make sure
00:47:41I had food
00:47:42In the refrigerator
00:47:42These are all the things
00:47:43You wanted Susan to do?
00:47:44These are all the things
00:47:45That I wanted Susan to do
00:47:47Susan had other plans
00:47:48He says she was out
00:47:49To get him
00:47:50She knew he had a secret
00:47:52It had to do
00:47:53With insurance fraud
00:47:55Susan discovered
00:47:55He'd been overbilling
00:47:56For medical services
00:47:57That's why Ira paid
00:47:59To have those
00:47:59Insurance investigators
00:48:01Beat up
00:48:01Did you feel like
00:48:02Susan was trying
00:48:03To blackmail you
00:48:04In any way?
00:48:05She was trying
00:48:06To blackmail me
00:48:07In every way
00:48:07She would look at me
00:48:08And she would say
00:48:09Listen
00:48:09I have broken
00:48:10Into your emails
00:48:11I have printed out
00:48:13And recorded
00:48:13All of your business
00:48:14Dealings
00:48:15And I'm telling you now
00:48:16If you don't give me
00:48:18Everything I want
00:48:19I'm going to the prosecutor
00:48:20And I'm going to expose
00:48:21You for everything
00:48:22And try to put you in jail
00:48:24Ira recorded Susan
00:48:26Threatening him
00:48:26Don't bother coming back
00:48:28You're going to
00:48:29F***ing seal
00:48:30In f***ing court
00:48:31Ira claimed Susan
00:48:33Was using that information
00:48:34To pressure him
00:48:35Into signing a
00:48:35Post-nuptial agreement
00:48:36That stated
00:48:37If they divorced
00:48:38He would give her
00:48:39Most of their assets
00:48:40Fearing Susan
00:48:42Would make good
00:48:42On her threats
00:48:43He signed it
00:48:44Only a moron
00:48:46Would have signed
00:48:47This post-nuptial agreement
00:48:48If they weren't
00:48:49Under severe coercion
00:48:50And distress
00:48:51So you're the moron
00:48:52In the story
00:48:53I am the moron
00:48:53This is Ira's version
00:48:55Of what happened
00:48:56We're not sure
00:48:57Of Susan's side
00:48:58She declined
00:48:59To speak to us
00:49:00Ira says it was
00:49:01During this volatile time
00:49:03That Kelly
00:49:03Went looking for a hitman
00:49:05He says she met
00:49:06With Markenzie
00:49:07Five times
00:49:08Before he even
00:49:09Knew about the plot
00:49:10She had already
00:49:11Started negotiating
00:49:12Price with him
00:49:12And everything
00:49:13And I said
00:49:14I don't know
00:49:14If I can
00:49:15Bring myself
00:49:16To even consider
00:49:17Anything like this
00:49:18So Kelly did this
00:49:19On her own
00:49:19Yes
00:49:20She said
00:49:21You know
00:49:21I know people
00:49:22That might
00:49:23Do this kind of thing
00:49:24And in my frustration
00:49:27I discussed it
00:49:28With her a little bit
00:49:28Do what kind of thing
00:49:30Hurt or kill people
00:49:32I had a conversation
00:49:33With her about it
00:49:34It was more fantasy
00:49:36There was nothing
00:49:37Legitimate to it
00:49:38What's hard
00:49:39Is that
00:49:39A respected doctor
00:49:41Was capable
00:49:41Of even
00:49:43Going down this road
00:49:44I don't know
00:49:45What to say
00:49:45That was not me
00:49:47That was a different person
00:49:48He says the only reason
00:49:50He went along with it
00:49:51Was because Markenzie
00:49:52Told Kelly
00:49:52It was too late
00:49:53To back out
00:49:54The black ops
00:49:55Were in town
00:49:56His friends
00:49:57Flew up from Florida
00:49:58They're mad
00:49:59That they're waiting around
00:50:00They think that
00:50:01We're playing around
00:50:01With them
00:50:02And she doesn't think
00:50:03We can back out
00:50:04Of this now
00:50:04This is real now
00:50:05This is real now
00:50:06Ira claims Markenzie
00:50:08Told Kelly
00:50:08During an impromptu
00:50:10Meeting without cameras
00:50:11About a terrifying story
00:50:12Involving a former
00:50:13Client of his
00:50:14Who wanted out
00:50:15He said to her
00:50:16My job is to
00:50:17Pick her up at a party
00:50:19Lure her away
00:50:20Bring her to the other guys
00:50:21And they are going to be
00:50:22Feeding her to the alligators
00:50:23For playing around
00:50:24And he made it
00:50:25Very clear
00:50:27That we were going to be
00:50:28Fed to the alligators
00:50:29If we didn't go through
00:50:31With this
00:50:31You did have another option
00:50:33You could have just
00:50:34Paid them the money
00:50:35And walked away
00:50:35We thought about that
00:50:36It was $100,000
00:50:38That he wanted at that point
00:50:40I don't think
00:50:41They would have went away
00:50:41And we both came
00:50:42To the same conclusion
00:50:43But isn't it easier though
00:50:44To just not kill someone
00:50:46And walk away
00:50:47And take the money
00:50:48Yes
00:50:48It just at the time
00:50:49We did not feel
00:50:50That that was an option
00:50:51We didn't feel
00:50:52They were going to stop
00:50:53Ira did admit to paying
00:50:55To have those
00:50:55Insurance investigators
00:50:56Beat up
00:50:57I made the biggest
00:50:58Wrong decision of my life
00:50:59Which was to put
00:51:01The welfare of myself
00:51:03Above the welfare
00:51:04Of those investigators
00:51:05And to allow them
00:51:06To be subjected
00:51:07To getting hurt
00:51:08What would you say to them
00:51:11I don't even know
00:51:12What I could say to them
00:51:15What I did was disgusting
00:51:17I will live with that forever
00:51:19Thank God
00:51:20This is all sham
00:51:21And nothing happens
00:51:21Did you ever think
00:51:23That you could have been
00:51:23Part of a sting operation
00:51:26You know the weird thing
00:51:27Is I was almost hoping
00:51:28It was part of a sting operation
00:51:29At that point
00:51:30Because I wanted to get
00:51:31Out of this so badly
00:51:32Why should people believe you
00:51:35People could think
00:51:35Yeah he's just trying
00:51:36To change his story now
00:51:38Because he got caught
00:51:39Anyone that knows me
00:51:40Knows that I am not
00:51:41A violent person
00:51:42And I really believe
00:51:43That Susan knows me
00:51:45For 23 years
00:51:46And even she knows
00:51:48There is no way
00:51:50I would have ever
00:51:51Let this happen
00:51:52You've heard Ira's story
00:51:54Now you'll hear from
00:51:56The woman at the center
00:51:57Of it all
00:51:58Did you both imagine
00:52:00Life without Susan?
00:52:02Of course
00:52:02And what was that life
00:52:03Without her around?
00:52:05Peaceful
00:52:2136-year-old Kelly Gribaluck
00:52:23Was also out on bail
00:52:24In 2017
00:52:25When she agreed
00:52:26To speak to us
00:52:27Just like her boyfriend
00:52:28Ira
00:52:29Kelly says her story
00:52:30Begins with a marriage
00:52:31From hell
00:52:32In her early 20s
00:52:34She joined the Hasidic Jewish community
00:52:36In Rockland County, New York
00:52:37That's where she met
00:52:39Her future husband
00:52:40Was it a matchmaker situation?
00:52:42Yes
00:52:42Arranged?
00:52:43Yes
00:52:44Because she didn't grow up
00:52:45In the ultra-Orthodox community
00:52:47She says it affected
00:52:48Who the matchmaker
00:52:49Chose for her
00:52:50So you got like
00:52:51A low-level pick
00:52:52Is that what you're saying?
00:52:53You know I guess
00:52:54That they would
00:52:55Choose somebody
00:52:56On a lower pedigree
00:52:57I only learned that later
00:52:58There were a lot of things
00:53:00I learned later
00:53:00You were clearly
00:53:01Not a good match
00:53:03Clearly
00:53:03He had some deeper issues
00:53:05That I didn't find out
00:53:06Until later
00:53:07Unfortunately
00:53:08Still, she and her
00:53:10Mismatched husband
00:53:11Had three boys
00:53:12This is what you wanted?
00:53:13Yes
00:53:14How happy were you?
00:53:15I was very content
00:53:16With my children
00:53:17I love taking care of them
00:53:19I love the time
00:53:20We spend together
00:53:22She says eventually
00:53:23The marriage became
00:53:24So toxic
00:53:24She decided to leave
00:53:25The religious community
00:53:26And take her sons
00:53:27With her
00:53:28But a judge
00:53:29Wouldn't allow it
00:53:30And gave her husband
00:53:31Primary custody
00:53:32Would you say
00:53:33That experience
00:53:34Changed you?
00:53:36Everything you went through
00:53:36With your ex-husband?
00:53:37Definitely
00:53:38It was very traumatic
00:53:39I lost a lot of trust
00:53:40In the justice system
00:53:43I feel like it
00:53:45Really failed
00:53:46Me and my children
00:53:47Then you met Ira
00:53:49I met him
00:53:51While I was still married
00:53:52Actually
00:53:53He was my doctor
00:53:55After her divorce
00:53:57Kelly says she reached out
00:53:58To Ira
00:53:59To discuss her latest venture
00:54:00Her orthotics business
00:54:02We right away
00:54:04Hit it off
00:54:05And there was a spark
00:54:06And
00:54:07So you're meeting him
00:54:08Just for business reasons
00:54:09Correct
00:54:10But something else happens
00:54:11Yes
00:54:12What do you think it was?
00:54:14Ah
00:54:15Chemistry
00:54:18He was going through
00:54:19Something very similar
00:54:20And we came
00:54:22To realize that
00:54:24We had a lot of things
00:54:25In common
00:54:25And the one fly in the ointment
00:54:27If you will
00:54:28Was his relationship
00:54:30With his soon-to-be ex-wife
00:54:33Yes
00:54:34Was not good
00:54:36No
00:54:37And I tried to
00:54:39Get them to work things out
00:54:41Amicably
00:54:42Because I went through
00:54:44A horrendous divorce
00:54:45And I didn't want to see it
00:54:47Tear apart another family
00:54:49So when Ira told her
00:54:51He was going to give his marriage
00:54:52Another chance
00:54:53I wanted them to do
00:54:54What was best for their family
00:54:55Why was it so important
00:54:57For you
00:54:58To see him
00:54:59Try to work it out
00:55:00With his wife
00:55:01When you're in love with him
00:55:02Because love is supposed
00:55:03To be unselfish
00:55:05And you should want
00:55:06The best for the other person
00:55:07Not what's right for you
00:55:09So I really truly loved him
00:55:10And I thought that
00:55:11Whatever would make him happy
00:55:13Is what I wanted for him
00:55:14She says she not only
00:55:16Stopped seeing Ira
00:55:17She met with Susan
00:55:18To wish her the best
00:55:19Did it start off friendly
00:55:21Yeah we got along
00:55:22And at the end of the conversation
00:55:23She actually said to me
00:55:24If it doesn't work out
00:55:25Between me and Ira
00:55:26I want to see him
00:55:26End up with you
00:55:27I think you're really good for him
00:55:29Months later
00:55:30The reconciliation with Susan
00:55:31Wasn't going well
00:55:32Ira ran back to Kelly
00:55:35Nobody was happy
00:55:36Kelly says
00:55:37Especially Susan
00:55:38You're off with your girlfriend
00:55:40In the Bahamas
00:55:41We can't get in touch
00:55:42You have to call your dad
00:55:43Your office manager
00:55:44Kelly says she saw firsthand
00:55:46How Susan's rage
00:55:47Could take a toll on Ira
00:55:49He was having panic attacks
00:55:51Couldn't sleep at night
00:55:53Nightmares
00:55:53When do you have
00:55:54The conversation about
00:55:56What if Susan
00:55:58Wasn't here on this earth anymore
00:56:01It was around that time
00:56:03Who brings it up
00:56:06I guess we both
00:56:08Were at that point
00:56:11You know like
00:56:13Wouldn't it be
00:56:14So good if she just
00:56:15Didn't come home
00:56:16Or you know
00:56:18She wasn't in the picture
00:56:20It was a horrible
00:56:22Horrible thought
00:56:23That I believe that
00:56:25Every person has
00:56:26In their lifetime
00:56:28I don't think that we're
00:56:31Evil
00:56:32For having such a thought
00:56:35I think the big difference is
00:56:37You both actually crossed over
00:56:39From just thinking about it
00:56:41To doing something about it
00:56:43Unfortunately
00:56:44Unfortunately we did
00:56:44Did you worry about those kids
00:56:46Not having
00:56:47Their mom
00:56:48I did
00:56:49But it didn't stop you
00:56:51No
00:56:53Why was this more important
00:56:54Than those kids
00:56:55Having their mom
00:56:56Because I saw someone
00:56:58That I loved being hurt
00:57:00And it was not going to come
00:57:01To an end
00:57:01She was never going to stop
00:57:03Did you both imagine
00:57:05Life without Susan
00:57:06Of course
00:57:07And what was that life
00:57:08Without her
00:57:09Around
00:57:10Peaceful
00:57:13She admits
00:57:14She was the one
00:57:14Who went hunting
00:57:15For a hitman
00:57:16And says it wasn't
00:57:17Until after she started
00:57:18Negotiating with Markenzie
00:57:19That she told Ira
00:57:21Did he give you
00:57:22The green light though
00:57:23To keep going
00:57:25He didn't tell me not to
00:57:26He wasn't sure
00:57:28What to do
00:57:28He's very indecisive
00:57:29With every aspect
00:57:31Of his life
00:57:33Like Ira
00:57:34Kelly claims
00:57:35They had a change of heart
00:57:36And tried to stop the hit
00:57:37But there was a problem
00:57:39Did you say to Markenzie
00:57:41We don't want to do this
00:57:42Yeah I told him
00:57:43And what did he say
00:57:46He said
00:57:46There's no backing out
00:57:49Kelly also told us
00:57:50The story about the alligators
00:57:51He explained to me
00:57:53That he has to
00:57:54Pick up a girl
00:57:55And bring her to the men
00:57:57And they're going to be
00:57:58Feeding her to alligators
00:57:59Did you take that as
00:58:01They could feed us
00:58:02To the alligators
00:58:03Absolutely
00:58:04Kelly says she and Ira
00:58:05Decided to back out anyway
00:58:07Did you want Susan Bernstein dead
00:58:11In the beginning yes
00:58:13But at the end no
00:58:15We both came to our senses
00:58:17We're like this is crazy
00:58:18We're not doing this
00:58:19I think people are
00:58:21Going to have a hard time
00:58:23Believing that
00:58:24You really didn't
00:58:25Want it to go through
00:58:26After everything you had done
00:58:28To set the plan in motion
00:58:29If we really wanted to do this
00:58:31He would have been paid
00:58:32Ira is very
00:58:35Capable of
00:58:37Financially
00:58:38Making it happen
00:58:39And he never
00:58:40Transferred any money
00:58:42He never withdrew any money
00:58:44When I was arrested
00:58:45I had a dollar on me
00:58:46And you were supposed to have
00:58:4948,000
00:58:51And that's when
00:58:52A car pulls up behind you
00:58:54Correct
00:58:55And it's the police
00:58:57Kelly says she was
00:58:58Stunned by the arrest
00:58:59And what she learned
00:59:00At the police station later
00:59:02About Markenzie
00:59:02That he wasn't a hitman
00:59:04I was in shock
00:59:06What are you saying
00:59:08To yourself
00:59:09Like how could I
00:59:10Have believed this
00:59:11It was a horrible feeling
00:59:14And I was kind of relieved
00:59:16I was relieved
00:59:17That nobody was hurt
00:59:18And why should people
00:59:20Believe you
00:59:21That you were relieved
00:59:22Since you went through with it
00:59:24Because I'm sitting here today
00:59:25And I'm remorseful
00:59:30And I'm sorry
00:59:31And I'm acknowledging
00:59:35That my actions
00:59:39And my thoughts
00:59:42Were horrible
00:59:46Is that why you chose
00:59:47To sit down with us?
00:59:48Yes
00:59:49But was she remorseful
00:59:51Enough to help
00:59:51The prosecutor?
00:59:52He was about
00:59:53To offer her a deal
00:59:54Would she save herself
00:59:56And agree to be
00:59:57A star witness?
00:59:58Or would she continue
00:59:59To protect the man
01:00:00She loved?
01:00:02Kelly seems like
01:00:02She has this
01:00:04Fierce loyalty
01:00:05To Ira
01:00:06She certainly does
01:00:21Prosecutor Moran
01:00:22Thought Ira Bernstein
01:00:23Might have made a misstep
01:00:24Ira posted bail
01:00:26And was out of jail
01:00:27In four days
01:00:28But Kelly sat behind bars
01:00:30For five months
01:00:32Why didn't Ira
01:00:33Bail her out?
01:00:34She'd have to ask him
01:00:35She might have
01:00:36The same question
01:00:39The prosecutor figured
01:00:40Kelly was angry at Ira
01:00:42And might roll on him
01:00:43He offered her a deal
01:00:44While she was still in jail
01:00:46In exchange for testifying
01:00:48Against Ira
01:00:48She would get 12 years
01:00:50In prison
01:00:50With a chance for parole
01:00:51In four
01:00:53Kelly took the deal
01:00:54Her attorney
01:00:55Jonathan Ripps
01:00:56Told us why
01:00:57If she were convicted
01:00:58After trial
01:00:59I'm fairly confident
01:01:00The judge would give her
01:01:01Close to the max
01:01:02Which would be
01:01:02Eight and a third
01:01:03To 25 years
01:01:04And that's an
01:01:05Awfully long time
01:01:06Plea deal
01:01:07Felt safe
01:01:07Anything involving
01:01:08State prison
01:01:09That is years in length
01:01:11Is going to be
01:01:11An ugly number
01:01:12But the alternative
01:01:14Had there been a conviction
01:01:15Would have been
01:01:15Much more drastic
01:01:17As Ira's case
01:01:18Headed toward trial
01:01:19It looked like
01:01:20His strategy
01:01:20Was to blame it all
01:01:21On his girlfriend
01:01:22He claimed he never
01:01:24Gave the go ahead
01:01:24To have his wife murdered
01:01:25That was all Kelly
01:01:27She came home
01:01:28On that evening
01:01:29And she told me
01:01:30She had to tell him yes
01:01:31So she went rogue
01:01:32On you
01:01:32You're saying
01:01:34I pretty much
01:01:35The prosecutor
01:01:36Says Ira
01:01:37Was rewriting history
01:01:39The evidence
01:01:40Told the real story
01:01:41When you look
01:01:42At the meetings
01:01:43And you listen
01:01:43To them
01:01:44Kelly couldn't
01:01:45Make one decision
01:01:45Ira was the one
01:01:46Calling the shots
01:01:47Was she the person
01:01:49Who was the conduit
01:01:50Sure
01:01:52But in the end
01:01:53Ira had a goal
01:01:55This was all about
01:01:56Money
01:01:57In your eyes
01:01:58Yes
01:01:59He believes
01:02:00Ira had no intention
01:02:02Of honoring
01:02:02That post-nuptial agreement
01:02:04The one where he consented
01:02:05To give Susan
01:02:06Most of their assets
01:02:07If they divorced
01:02:08Ira Bernstein
01:02:09Was a man
01:02:10Who wanted to keep
01:02:12Everything that
01:02:13In his eyes
01:02:14He worked so hard for
01:02:15And he was going
01:02:18To do what he had to do
01:02:19Whether it be
01:02:20Have the insurance
01:02:21Investigators beat up
01:02:22Or having his wife
01:02:24Killed
01:02:26The cornerstone
01:02:26Really of the
01:02:27Defensive case
01:02:28Is that
01:02:29Ira tried to call it
01:02:30Off at the end
01:02:31But that
01:02:31There were threats
01:02:33If you don't go through
01:02:34With this
01:02:34Harm could come to you
01:02:36That's simply
01:02:37Not the case
01:02:38In fact
01:02:40After they claimed
01:02:41They were subject
01:02:41To the arrest
01:02:42They actually hire him
01:02:43To do the other job
01:02:44To beat up the two men
01:02:47And he says
01:02:48Nowhere on the tapes
01:02:49Or in text messages
01:02:51Did Ira and Kelly
01:02:52Say they changed their minds
01:02:53About killing Susan
01:02:54Even if they did
01:02:55Change their mind
01:02:56They never called the police
01:02:58To tell the police
01:02:59Hey there's a hitman
01:03:00Out there hired
01:03:00To kill Susan
01:03:01They never called Susan
01:03:03To say watch out
01:03:04They did nothing
01:03:05And Moran says
01:03:06There was another indicator
01:03:07That Ira and Kelly
01:03:08Planned to go through
01:03:09With the murder
01:03:10On the day that Kelly
01:03:11Told the informant yes
01:03:13She called and made
01:03:15Dinner reservations
01:03:16For the entire doctor's office
01:03:18For May 5th
01:03:19And that was the day
01:03:21That Susan was going
01:03:22To be run over
01:03:23Can I help you?
01:03:25Hi
01:03:25I made reservations
01:03:27Last night for Cinco de Mayo
01:03:28And I wasn't sure
01:03:28If I told you
01:03:297.30 or 8 o'clock
01:03:30It's an alibi
01:03:31Kelly and Ira
01:03:32Wanted everybody from work
01:03:34To see that they were with them
01:03:36Acting normal
01:03:38When Susan got killed
01:03:40As the trial date
01:03:41Drew closer
01:03:42Moran was feeling
01:03:43Pretty good about his case
01:03:45And his star witness
01:03:46But then
01:03:47A major problem
01:03:48After Kelly
01:03:49Got out of jail
01:03:50Instead of rolling on Ira
01:03:52She moved in with him
01:03:53Kelly seems like
01:03:54She has this
01:03:55Fierce loyalty
01:03:56To Ira
01:03:57She certainly does
01:03:58Kelly was now
01:04:00Too much of a wild card
01:04:01So instead of going to trial
01:04:03The prosecutor
01:04:04Offered Ira a deal
01:04:0515 years in prison
01:04:07Eligible for parole in five
01:04:09There was a real defense here
01:04:11Ira's attorney
01:04:12Jeff Millman
01:04:13Says even though
01:04:14He believed Ira
01:04:15Had a strong defense
01:04:16He knew going before a jury
01:04:18Could be a gamble
01:04:18Here you have two people
01:04:20Who've been talking about
01:04:21Planning a murder
01:04:22And then
01:04:23You're supposed to
01:04:24Take their word for it
01:04:25That they were trying
01:04:25To call it off
01:04:26It's one of the obstacles
01:04:27Of trial
01:04:28Absolutely
01:04:28And there were
01:04:29Ira's other charges
01:04:31Insurance fraud
01:04:32And ordering the assault
01:04:33On those investigators
01:04:34So he accepted the deal
01:04:37And pleaded guilty
01:04:38To grand larceny
01:04:39And conspiracy
01:04:40Involving the plot
01:04:41To kill his wife
01:04:42We resolved everything
01:04:44With the plea
01:04:45All financial investigations
01:04:47All crimes
01:04:48Alleged to have been committed
01:04:51As for his estranged wife
01:04:53Susan
01:04:53The intended target
01:04:55She set her peace
01:04:56At Ira's sentencing
01:04:57She requested
01:04:58Not to be on camera
01:04:59Ira is evil
01:05:01And cold-hearted
01:05:02And a narcissist
01:05:04The only remorse
01:05:05Ira has
01:05:06Is that the murder
01:05:07Did not occur
01:05:08He is the scariest
01:05:10Type of criminal
01:05:11Smart
01:05:12With no remorse
01:05:14But Ira told us
01:05:15He is remorseful
01:05:17For all the pain
01:05:18He's caused his family
01:05:19Especially his children
01:05:21I love my children
01:05:22Very much
01:05:25What I did was wrong
01:05:27I will spend every day
01:05:28For the rest of my life
01:05:29Making it up
01:05:32To them
01:05:35So what would
01:05:36His and hers prisons
01:05:37Do to Ira and Kelly's relationship?
01:05:40It depends on who you ask
01:05:41I don't know where this is gonna go
01:05:43I know I still care about her a lot
01:05:45I'm hoping we can get through this
01:05:47The only good thing
01:05:48That came out of this
01:05:49Was that
01:05:51We've both come to the realization
01:05:53That we really love each other
01:05:54Kelly believed
01:05:56They'd stay together
01:05:57Some people call this
01:05:59A twisted love story
01:06:01I think it's true love
01:06:04I think what we did
01:06:06Was really, really wrong
01:06:07And if I could go back
01:06:09I would do everything differently
01:06:11But I can't
01:06:12And I can see clearly
01:06:15That my emotions
01:06:16Definitely overruled my intelligence
01:06:18Why do you think that love
01:06:20Is still there?
01:06:21Because after everything
01:06:22That we've been through
01:06:24We're still devoted to each other
01:06:25And care about each other
01:06:27And in a solid relationship
01:06:31That's what Kelly said
01:06:33Nine years ago
01:06:34She and Ira both spent
01:06:35Four years in prison
01:06:36But it appears only
01:06:38One of them learned their lesson
01:06:40To say that this case
01:06:42Took a turn
01:06:43No one expected
01:06:44Is really the understatement
01:06:45Of my career
01:06:46Nobody saw this coming
01:07:00After spending
01:07:02Four years behind bars
01:07:03Both Ira and Kelly
01:07:04Were released in 2021
01:07:06Finally free to be together again
01:07:08How did Kelly feel
01:07:10When she got out
01:07:11Because when she went in
01:07:13She was saying that
01:07:14You know, this was true love
01:07:16And that they would be together
01:07:17She wanted absolutely nothing
01:07:19To do with him
01:07:20Kelly's lawyer
01:07:21Jonathan Ripps
01:07:23Says when she was in prison
01:07:24She learned Ira tried
01:07:25To pin the whole thing on her
01:07:27Ira had gone through
01:07:28The appellate process
01:07:29And a lot of his motions
01:07:31Involved throwing Kelly
01:07:32Under the bus
01:07:33That she was the mastermind
01:07:34That was something
01:07:35That broke her heart
01:07:37He says Kelly has moved on
01:07:38Started a few small businesses
01:07:40And is close with her children
01:07:42They're all basically adults now
01:07:44And she's got contact
01:07:45With them on a daily basis
01:07:46And the children are doing okay
01:07:48They're all doing very, very well
01:07:50Meanwhile, Ira and Susan
01:07:52Continued to battle it out in court
01:07:54He and Susan
01:07:55Never got divorced
01:07:56Even within those four years
01:07:57That he was in prison
01:07:58Their divorce was still ongoing
01:08:00Detective Peggy Braddock
01:08:02Had kept tabs on Ira
01:08:03Over the years
01:08:04Oh, he's getting out right now
01:08:05Ever since her involvement
01:08:07In the 2017 investigation
01:08:08I got a pretty good shot of him
01:08:11That's a long divorce proceeding
01:08:14Yes
01:08:16Money and assets
01:08:17Were still at the center
01:08:18Of their ongoing feud
01:08:20Ira's felony conviction
01:08:21Hadn't gotten in the way
01:08:22Of his lavish lifestyle
01:08:23He's living in a very big mansion
01:08:26In New Jersey
01:08:27Life is good for Ira
01:08:29He even had a new girlfriend
01:08:31What he didn't have anymore
01:08:32Was his medical license
01:08:34So in 2022
01:08:35Ira went into the landscaping business
01:08:38But even that presented its challenges
01:08:41He could not get a landscaping license
01:08:44Because of his prior convictions
01:08:46His criminal convictions
01:08:47So he had to work under
01:08:48Somebody else's license
01:08:50That somebody was a landscaper
01:08:52Ira had used in the past
01:08:53They partnered up
01:08:55And Ira took on the role of manager
01:08:57So he controlled all the money
01:08:59And he controlled the accounts
01:09:01He accepted all the payments
01:09:02From clients
01:09:03The landscaper had relinquished
01:09:05That control basically
01:09:05To Ira
01:09:08Detective Braddock
01:09:09Says that turned out
01:09:10To be a big mistake
01:09:11For the landscaper
01:09:12He claimed a large amount
01:09:13Of money went missing
01:09:14From the company
01:09:15The landscaper says that
01:09:17Ira stole hundreds
01:09:18Of thousands of dollars
01:09:19From him
01:09:19He stated that
01:09:21Ira basically stole
01:09:22His business from him
01:09:23A business that he had
01:09:24Created from the ground up
01:09:26The landscaper
01:09:27Should have watched Dateline
01:09:29I believe he did
01:09:30To be honest
01:09:31But I think
01:09:31And he still
01:09:32Went into business with him
01:09:33He believed Ira's version
01:09:35That he was tricked
01:09:36By Kelly Gribulek
01:09:37And it was all Kelly's idea
01:09:40The landscaper
01:09:41Was now certain
01:09:41He'd been duped
01:09:42Especially after
01:09:44What happened next
01:09:46To say that this case
01:09:47Took a turn
01:09:48No one expected
01:09:50Is really the understatement
01:09:51Of my career
01:09:51Correct
01:09:52Nobody saw this coming
01:09:54The landscaper
01:09:55Said he had been listening
01:09:56To Ira complain
01:09:57About Susan
01:09:57And the contentious divorce
01:09:59For months
01:10:01Ira would tell him
01:10:02That his wife
01:10:03Was trying to take him
01:10:04For everything
01:10:05She wanted to take his houses
01:10:07She had turned his kids
01:10:08Against him
01:10:09The detective says
01:10:10Ira had a solution
01:10:12That sounded eerily familiar
01:10:14Incredibly, she says
01:10:16He asked the landscaper
01:10:17If he could find someone
01:10:18To kill Susan
01:10:20Did your jaw drop?
01:10:21Yes
01:10:22It was shocking
01:10:23It was disturbing
01:10:25And to be honest
01:10:26I didn't think
01:10:27He would be foolish enough
01:10:28To try that again
01:10:30This was August 2022
01:10:31One year after Ira
01:10:33Had gotten out of prison
01:10:34And several years
01:10:35After he told us this
01:10:37I love my children
01:10:39Very much
01:10:41What I did was wrong
01:10:43I will spend every day
01:10:45For the rest of my life
01:10:46Making it up
01:10:48It's almost something like
01:10:49Are you sure?
01:10:50Because this
01:10:51Doesn't sound possible
01:10:52Right
01:10:54The landscaper saw it
01:10:55As an opportunity
01:10:56If he could get Ira on tape
01:10:58Planning his wife's murder
01:10:59He could use that recording
01:11:01To convince Ira
01:11:02To walk away
01:11:02From the landscaping business
01:11:04And maybe get some
01:11:05Of his money back
01:11:06So the landscaper
01:11:08Is really taking matters
01:11:09Into his own hands
01:11:10He was
01:11:11He ordered recording devices
01:11:12On his own
01:11:13And then he had tried
01:11:14To record the conversation
01:11:15Himself
01:11:15He was asking the landscaper
01:11:17If he had friends
01:11:19Or people that he knew
01:11:20Who could do this
01:11:21And the landscaper
01:11:22Said that he did
01:11:23Does Ira just think
01:11:24That everybody has friends
01:11:25Who are assassins?
01:11:27Apparently
01:11:28I know I can make it happen
01:11:29On the recording
01:11:31Ira sounded worried
01:11:32They'd get caught
01:11:33What happens when
01:11:34The police talk to them?
01:11:35Nobody's gonna find nobody
01:11:36Are you kidding me?
01:11:38I mean are they professional
01:11:39Or are they just straight?
01:11:41No
01:11:41These guys
01:11:42Because clearly
01:11:43There's a lot more factors
01:11:44Than they were
01:11:4415, 20 years ago
01:11:45There's librarians
01:11:46There's a million things
01:11:48Out there
01:11:48That they don't see here
01:11:50And they watch 20 blocks away
01:11:51And they see someone over there
01:11:53These guys are professional
01:11:54Once they grab her
01:11:55I don't know what's gonna happen
01:11:56All I know is that
01:11:57She's not going back home
01:11:58Can they convict someone
01:12:00On circumstantial evidence?
01:12:01You know what I'm saying?
01:12:02Like basically like
01:12:03Listen
01:12:04You're the ex-husband
01:12:05You were still going
01:12:06Through a message board
01:12:06You've already tried this once
01:12:09What did the landscaper
01:12:10Do with those recordings?
01:12:12He called Ira
01:12:13And told him
01:12:13He had a recording
01:12:14Of the conversation
01:12:15Oh
01:12:15Did Ira say anything
01:12:17To the landscaper?
01:12:18I believe he just hung up on him
01:12:20And then immediately
01:12:21Ira called his sister
01:12:22And his sister called
01:12:24The landscaper
01:12:25The landscaper, yes
01:12:27Ira's younger sister
01:12:2839-year-old Jacqueline Goldberg
01:12:30Met the landscaper
01:12:31At a local restaurant
01:12:32He started to play the recordings
01:12:34But he wasn't able
01:12:35To do that on his laptop
01:12:37The laptop wasn't working
01:12:38So she never heard it
01:12:41Jacqueline, who's a lawyer
01:12:42Had now created a problem
01:12:44For herself
01:12:45So now she's all wrapped up in this
01:12:47His sister is now as well
01:12:48Yes
01:12:49The landscaper moved on
01:12:51To plan B
01:12:52He didn't go to the police
01:12:53Instead he went straight
01:12:55To the target
01:12:56Susan
01:12:57And I am a certified
01:12:59High conflict divorce
01:13:00And custody coach
01:13:01Who's apparently made a career
01:13:02Out of her experience
01:13:03With Ira
01:13:04Reach out if you have
01:13:06An ex that is
01:13:07Narcissistic
01:13:09Toxic
01:13:10Unstable
01:13:10Her mind must be blown
01:13:12When she sits down
01:13:13She was shocked
01:13:14With the landscaper
01:13:15Yes
01:13:16That she's in danger
01:13:17Yet again
01:13:18Yes
01:13:20Susan immediately
01:13:21Contacted the Rockland County
01:13:23District Attorney's Office
01:13:24With this new information
01:13:25And spoke with someone
01:13:27In the District Attorney's Office
01:13:28Who passed the information
01:13:30On to me
01:13:31That's how Detective Braddock
01:13:32Got the case
01:13:33And started unraveling
01:13:35The dark details
01:13:36She reached out to Susan
01:13:38I called her
01:13:39And spoke with her
01:13:40What was your advice
01:13:41To Susan
01:13:41During this time
01:13:42While you're investigating
01:13:43Susan's a very cautious person
01:13:45Because of the first event
01:13:46So she knew
01:13:47To call the police
01:13:48If anything
01:13:49Was out of the ordinary
01:13:52She's a very smart person
01:13:55Since the landscaper
01:13:56Had already tipped off Ira
01:13:57To his secret recordings
01:13:59The detective says
01:14:00Another undercover sting
01:14:02Was out of the question
01:14:04Ira had shut off
01:14:05All communication
01:14:06At that time
01:14:06And it just didn't seem probable
01:14:08You know
01:14:09We tried to make
01:14:09A controlled phone call
01:14:10To him
01:14:11And he wouldn't pick up
01:14:12The phone
01:14:12So no Hollywood
01:14:13This time around
01:14:14Unfortunately no
01:14:17Instead detectives
01:14:18Focused on phone records
01:14:20And other digital evidence
01:14:21To solidify their case
01:14:22Eight months later
01:14:24Ira once again
01:14:25Was charged
01:14:26With criminal solicitation
01:14:27Tampering with evidence
01:14:29And conspiracy
01:14:30Were you at the sheriff's department
01:14:32When he came in?
01:14:33Yes
01:14:33What's his demeanor
01:14:35The look on his face?
01:14:36It was just like
01:14:36It was another day for him
01:14:37He didn't seem stressed at all
01:14:40His sister was charged
01:14:41With tampering
01:14:42With physical evidence
01:14:43Hindering prosecution
01:14:45And conspiracy
01:14:46They both pleaded
01:14:47Not guilty
01:14:48And were free to go
01:14:49How did you find out
01:14:51That Ira was
01:14:52Trying again
01:14:54Yes
01:14:54To have Susan killed
01:14:55I mean I still have
01:14:57A few friends
01:14:57In the force
01:14:58In the police department
01:14:59So everybody
01:15:00Was reaching out
01:15:01What is your reaction
01:15:04When you hear that?
01:15:06It was sad
01:15:07And I really felt
01:15:08For Susan
01:15:09Trying
01:15:11The best that she can
01:15:12To raise the kids
01:15:13And Ira
01:15:14As a selfish person
01:15:15Once everything
01:15:16For himself
01:15:17Detective Braddock
01:15:18And the DA's office
01:15:19Prepared for trial
01:15:20Did they have enough evidence
01:15:22To send Ira Bernstein
01:15:23Back to prison
01:15:24And keep him there?
01:15:40As law enforcement
01:15:41Prepared for trial
01:15:42They knew this case
01:15:43Wasn't as clear cut
01:15:44As the first time
01:15:45Ira got caught
01:15:46Trying to have
01:15:47His wife murdered
01:15:48The recording was done
01:15:50By the landscaper himself
01:15:52And it was a little bit
01:15:53Difficult to hear at times
01:15:54It wasn't the clearest
01:15:55What happened
01:15:56Please talk to them
01:15:57Their case was built
01:15:58On those scratchy recordings
01:16:00And on what police learned
01:16:01From phone records
01:16:02Any text messages
01:16:04That were of value to you?
01:16:06Yes
01:16:06There was a text message
01:16:07I believe to Ira
01:16:08Where he tells him
01:16:11He has the recording
01:16:11And there was definitely
01:16:13A text message to Ira's sister
01:16:15Back and forth
01:16:16Regarding the recording
01:16:17As well
01:16:18The detective says
01:16:19Those texts
01:16:20Backed up the landscaper's story
01:16:22That Ira and his sister
01:16:23Jacqueline
01:16:24Wanted the recordings
01:16:25Destroyed
01:16:26In exchange for giving him
01:16:27Back control of the company
01:16:29Jacqueline wrote
01:16:30It's important to know
01:16:31That if he signs
01:16:32Over the business
01:16:33Are you willing to do
01:16:34What you said earlier
01:16:35And get rid of the recording?
01:16:37So this is just
01:16:38Further proof
01:16:39You're gathering
01:16:39Yes
01:16:39This is something
01:16:40To substantiate
01:16:41Detective Braddock
01:16:42Believed Ira and his sister
01:16:44Would fight the charges
01:16:46I felt that
01:16:47He had already
01:16:47Gone to prison once
01:16:48More than likely
01:16:49He wouldn't want to go back
01:16:51A second time
01:16:51Also because of his sister
01:16:53Meaning
01:16:54Because she had a lot to lose
01:16:56She's an attorney
01:16:57She hadn't lost anything
01:16:58Yet
01:16:59And this was big for her
01:17:01While both sides
01:17:02Prepared for trial
01:17:03Two significant things happened
01:17:05After a seven year battle
01:17:07Ira and Susan
01:17:08Were finally divorced
01:17:09And then
01:17:10Ira remarried
01:17:12Who married him?
01:17:14His girlfriend
01:17:14At the time
01:17:15Of the investigation
01:17:16Married him
01:17:17After he was arrested
01:17:19Any comment?
01:17:20Now Ira was back in court
01:17:21But not for a trial
01:17:23He was ready
01:17:24To make a deal
01:17:26Again
01:17:27It was the summer
01:17:28Of 2025
01:17:29And Ira looked different
01:17:32He appeared in court
01:17:33Without his toupee
01:17:34He actually took
01:17:36His toupee off
01:17:37I believe
01:17:37When he went in prison
01:17:38The first time
01:17:38Apparently he
01:17:40Went to the gym
01:17:41And started working out
01:17:42So when he went to prison
01:17:43He wouldn't be
01:17:44As big a target
01:17:44And when he came out
01:17:46Of prison
01:17:46He never put the toupee
01:17:47Back on
01:17:48Under this new agreement
01:17:50Ira would plead guilty
01:17:51To tampering with evidence
01:17:53In exchange
01:17:54The conspiracy
01:17:55And solicitation charges
01:17:57Would be dropped
01:17:58But that didn't stop
01:17:59The prosecutor
01:18:00From getting Ira
01:18:01To own up
01:18:01To what he'd done
01:18:02Ira had to admit
01:18:11That the tampering
01:18:12With evidence
01:18:13Was in connection
01:18:13To wanting his wife dead
01:18:15Why was that important
01:18:17To the case?
01:18:18Because even if he wasn't
01:18:19Actually being charged
01:18:20With the solicitation
01:18:21He needed to be
01:18:22Held accountable
01:18:22That he was asking
01:18:23Somebody to have
01:18:25His wife killed
01:18:30Just last week
01:18:30Ira arrived
01:18:31For his sentencing
01:18:32Screwed me
01:18:33On the first interview
01:18:34Why would I talk again?
01:18:35What were you thinking?
01:18:36Why would you do this again?
01:18:37Do you have anything
01:18:37To say to Susan?
01:18:40All rise
01:18:41The judge gave Susan
01:18:42A chance to say her piece
01:18:44And again
01:18:45She requested
01:18:45Not to be on camera
01:18:47First
01:18:47She went after Ira
01:18:48He is a multi-millionaire
01:18:51Who hired top attorneys
01:18:53To weasel his way out
01:18:54Of his violent
01:18:56And harsh crimes
01:18:57To get himself
01:18:58The best possible
01:18:59Plea bargain deal
01:19:00She even went after
01:19:02Ira's sister
01:19:03Jacqueline failed
01:19:04To intervene
01:19:05And report him
01:19:06To law enforcement
01:19:07Or warn me
01:19:08Or my children
01:19:09Similar to him
01:19:10She has no soul
01:19:12And used her wealth
01:19:13For a plea deal
01:19:14My children and I
01:19:15Live in a state
01:19:16Of crisis
01:19:17I thank God
01:19:19Every night
01:19:19To the two men
01:19:20That he attempted
01:19:21To hire
01:19:22To have me killed
01:19:23These men
01:19:24Didn't know me
01:19:25But recognized
01:19:26His evil
01:19:27Mr. Bernstein
01:19:29Go ahead
01:19:30When it was
01:19:31Ira's turn to speak
01:19:32To Susan
01:19:33He addressed
01:19:34Susan directly
01:19:34And denied asking
01:19:35Anyone to harm her
01:19:37I never asked
01:19:38Or solicited him
01:19:40To hurt you
01:19:40In any way
01:19:41I never wanted
01:19:42To have you harmed
01:19:44And I said no to him
01:19:45With that
01:19:47The judge gave
01:19:48His ruling
01:19:48You were hereby
01:19:49Sentenced to an
01:19:50Indeterminate term
01:19:52Of one and a half
01:19:53To three years
01:19:54In state prison
01:19:56He also issued
01:19:57An order of protection
01:19:58For Susan
01:19:59And her three children
01:20:00Until 2037
01:20:01You were to have
01:20:03Absolutely no contact
01:20:05Or communication
01:20:06With any of these
01:20:08Individuals
01:20:09Do you understand that?
01:20:11Yes
01:20:11As for Jacqueline
01:20:12She agreed to an
01:20:13Adjournment
01:20:14Contemplating dismissal
01:20:15Which means her
01:20:16Charges will be dropped
01:20:17If she steers clear
01:20:18Of violating the law
01:20:19For six months
01:20:20Is she able to
01:20:21Practice law?
01:20:22Yes
01:20:23Really?
01:20:26Ira and the
01:20:26Landscaper sued
01:20:27Each other in civil court
01:20:29The case was dismissed
01:20:30But
01:20:31The Landscaper
01:20:32Got his business back
01:20:33He did
01:20:34Ultimately he did
01:20:35Happy ending for him
01:20:36Yes
01:20:36With that?
01:20:36Yes
01:20:37Ira's legal troubles
01:20:38Aren't over
01:20:39It is a daily struggle
01:20:41For me and my
01:20:42Three young children
01:20:43Susan is currently
01:20:45Suing the siblings
01:20:46For emotional distress
01:20:47Years earlier
01:20:48She spoke about
01:20:49How deeply
01:20:49The murder for hire
01:20:50Plot affected her life
01:20:51It's a nightmare
01:20:53And awful
01:20:54And disgusting
01:20:55I think for a lot
01:20:56Of people watching this
01:20:57It's hard to imagine
01:20:58Hating someone
01:20:59That much
01:21:00That you would want
01:21:01Them killed
01:21:02Not once
01:21:03But
01:21:05Possibly twice
01:21:06I think for Ira
01:21:07It's all about
01:21:08Winning
01:21:09And it's all about
01:21:10Money
01:21:10His well-being
01:21:12And his comfort
01:21:13And happiness
01:21:14Was more important
01:21:15Than hers
01:21:16It's all about Ira
01:21:18The defendant
01:21:18Is remanded
01:21:19To the custody
01:21:20Of the Department
01:21:20Of Corrections
01:21:21Thank you
01:21:22He is expected
01:21:23To be let out
01:21:23Of prison
01:21:24In 2029
01:21:26And then
01:21:26Susan will be
01:21:27Looking over her
01:21:28Shoulder again
01:21:29I think Susan
01:21:30Will always have
01:21:30To look over her
01:21:31Shoulder
01:21:31Whether he's
01:21:32Out of prison
01:21:32Or not
01:21:34She always needs
01:21:34To be careful
01:21:37Markenzie
01:21:37The man
01:21:38Who helped
01:21:38Stop the hit
01:21:39On Susan
01:21:40The first time
01:21:40Says he will
01:21:41Always have her
01:21:42Back
01:21:44She's a friend
01:21:44Of yours now
01:21:45Yeah we meet
01:21:46We speak
01:21:46From time to time
01:21:47Highly the age
01:21:48The kids
01:21:49You know
01:21:51She's
01:21:52She's a wonderful
01:21:52Person
01:21:53I would do it
01:21:54All over again
01:21:54For her
01:21:55You know
01:21:55For anybody
01:22:00That's all
