00:01Gunpoint is a game about breaking into superior buildings with a bunch of stupid gadgets.
00:05That includes a pair of projectile trousers that let you jump absurdly high and throw yourself through windows.
00:09You've also got sticky gloves that let you climb walls,
00:11and a trench coat that stops you dying from long falls,
00:13but doesn't stop you falling flat on your face like an idiot.
00:16You're meant to be a freelance spy,
00:18so you take jobs from clients who usually want some sensitive data stolen or wiped.
00:22That's not all you'll be doing, but in the missions I want to show you here,
00:24you're just trying to get to a computer and steal something from it.
00:32Between missions you can buy new gadgets,
00:34and the one I'm about to get is the one the game is really about.
00:36It's called the Crosslink, and it's sort of a hacking tool,
00:39but it works a little bit differently to hacking in other games.
00:46So without the Crosslink this mission is impossible.
00:48The computer I'm trying to get to is behind an electronically locked security door,
00:51and there's no key to open it.
00:52All I've got is this light switch, which works, but doesn't really help.
00:57But in Crosslink mode I can see how all this stuff is wired up,
01:00and I can even change it.
01:01So I can drag a connection from this light switch to the door I want to open,
01:03and then I just have to press it.
01:20And you can also upgrade your gadgets, so here I'm just adding some strength to my jump
01:24with the points I've earned from my missions.
01:26Throwing yourself through windows is cool, but knocking someone else through windows is cooler.
01:31When you get a new ability like the Crosslink, I want to give you some space to play around with
01:34it
01:35before the game gets any harder.
01:37So this level is actually pretty easy.
01:39It's also very open-ended if you want to experiment with ridiculous solutions.
01:55So I've gone to one terminal, but there's two more on this level, and there's a load of different ways
01:58to get to them.
01:59But I'm going to show you the most complicated one I know.
02:02If I wire this elevator to this light, then when I arrive it will turn the light off.
02:07And it'll also open this door.
02:10Then the guard on this floor will go to the light switch,
02:12but instead of turning the lights back on, it's going to turn off the lights on the lower floor.
02:17The guard down there will try and press his light switch, and I want that to shut the door.
02:21And you'll see why in a sec.
02:25So I arrive on the floor, the lights go out.
02:27The guard goes to the light switch, but it doesn't work.
02:30So he just patrols the dark area, and walks through the door just as the guard on the lower floor
02:35reaches his own light switch,
02:36which shuts him, locking him out.
02:39And that leaves me free to hack this computer without being shot.
02:42It's pretty simple, really.
02:44When I discovered that solution, my friend Craig was in the room, and I made a bizarre noise.
02:49And Craig said, did something emergent just happen?
02:52And I said, yes.
02:55On my way out, I'm going to stop on the first floor and let the guard back indoors.
02:58And then, when I reach the top, I'm going to send the lift back down, so it'll shut him inside.
03:02And that's because I've got to leave this way, so I want him to be shut inside so he can't
03:06shoot me.
03:22Now this next level is a bit trickier.
03:24You've got to break into a police station and get some records from the morgue.
03:42The next straight flight guards will shoot you dead almost instantly, so you have to make sure you take them
03:45by surprise.
03:46And here I'm going to surprise this guy with the door.
03:52Now the green wire through this door is a wire that goes through a circuit box.
03:56And that's protecting all the connections on the green circuit at the moment.
03:59So I need to get to it and tap into it before I can rewire anything that's on the green
04:02circuit.
04:21So I'm going to turn this light off just to get that guard out of the way.
04:34Now this guy's an enforcer, he's got body armour and he's quite bulky, so I can't just pounce him and
04:38punch him.
04:40But if I can get out of his way until he's in a more precarious position, then I can still
04:45hit him with enough force to knock him out.
04:53So I'm coming up to the basement, which is where the computer is I need to get to.
04:56It's behind two vault doors, and these close a little while after they open.
05:00So I can try wiring a switch and a camera to them so that I can trigger them one after
05:04the other.
05:09But you have to get the timing just right to get through there.
05:12And I don't really like timing challenges, so I prefer to find a more indirect solution.
05:18So what I'd really like is for these two doors to open without me having to press anything, so I
05:22don't have to keep running back and pressing buttons and stuff.
05:24So I need something that I can connect to either of them and that will work on some kind of
05:29timer.
05:30And luckily the elevator buttons for both these two floors of the elevator are on both the red and the
05:36blue circuit, so I can connect either of those to these doors.
05:39So what I'm going to do is set it up in a loop so that the doors trigger the elevators
05:43and the elevators trigger the doors.
05:45And if I do it right, then they will just keep on triggering each other in an infinite loop, and
05:50the doors will keep on opening and shutting, and I won't have to press anything.
05:54The details of how you do that obviously are a bit complicated, and it's not going to be obvious just
05:58from watching me.
05:58But when you start to play around with the crosslink, it's easy to just kind of sit there and get
06:04carried away messing around with how all the things work and what linking this to linking that does.
06:10And it becomes fairly intuitive.
06:14But if it all seems a bit complicated, don't worry about that, because this is, again, one of the most
06:19complicated solutions to this problem.
06:21There are loads and loads of easier ways, and there's even a gadget that just links things that are on
06:25different circuits, so you have enough charges for that.
06:27You could just link one door to the other, hit a switch and solve it.
06:31I want to make sure there's always some sort of clever shortcuts if you don't want to try a particularly
06:36complicated solution.
06:38I won't talk you through every step of this mission, because hopefully you get the idea by now.
06:42But when I started making Gunpoint, I said it would be free, and a few people said I was nuts.
06:46Then I brought two artists on, John Roberts and Fabian van Domelen, and they made it look really nice, and
06:50even more people said I was nuts.
06:51Now I've made it quite a bit longer with a shop and an upgrade system and a story and branching
06:55conversations and stuff, and I'm a lot less confident that I'm not nuts.
06:58So I need your advice. Stop by gunpointgame.com and tell me whether you think it's worth money or not.
07:03You've seen three missions here, including this one, and there'll be about 20 of those in total, to give you
07:07some idea of the length.
07:10If you want to stay up to date with when Gunpoint's coming out, you can follow Gunpoint Game on Twitter.
07:13If you'd like to help test it, all you have to do is email me, the details will be on
07:16the games site.
07:18Gunpoint is in the Independent Games Festival, so if you're an IGF judge, I'd love it if you had time
07:21to check it out before the deadline on Monday.
07:26A few people have asked if the game's going to have any music, and the answer is yes, if someone
07:30makes some awesome music for it.
07:31If you'd like to make the music, the best way you can show me what you have in mind is
07:34to try adding some to this trailer.
07:37So, I'll put up a version without my stupid voice on it, on gunpointgame.com.
07:42I'm also interested in making a Linux version, but I have no idea how.
07:46The Windows version is made in GameMaker, and I don't know of a way to port it over, but if
07:50you know anything about making games through Linux and want to help, let me know, and we'll see if we
07:52can figure something out.
07:56Generally, too, if you want to get in touch for any reason, it's always welcome.
08:00I'm pentadact at gmail.com, and the game site is gunpointgame.com.
08:05.
08:07.

08:08.
08:11.
08:17Grazie a tutti.
