The WA Government has struck several deals to sure up energy supplies from developing wind farms in the Mid-West and Wheatbelt. The opposition and renewable power industry say while it's a major step to retiring the state's coal fired power fleet, it's not enough to meet the State's growing energy needs.

00:02Amid a global energy crisis, the WA government is leaning into wind power.
00:07These long-term power purchase agreements with these large-scale wind farms
00:11will turn the dial on the energy transition.
00:14In 2022, Labor announced a plan to close all state-owned coal stations by 2030,
00:21committing to deliver 810 megawatts of additional wind farm capacity.
00:25Four years later...
00:27I'm very pleased to announce that Watercorp has entered into a power purchase agreement
00:31with Olinta Energy for 330 megawatts of wind-based power.
00:37The government has directed Synergy to enter power purchase agreements
00:41with two large-scale wind farms that are currently under development.
00:45The government wouldn't reveal how much the deals are costing, citing commercial incompetence.
00:50To help deliver the projects, it's also invested $2 million to locally manufacture anchor cages,
00:57used to stabilise wind towers.
01:00The combined projects are supposed to produce more than one gigawatt of electricity,
01:06with the government planning to purchase enough to power 800,000 homes per year.
01:12But the actual output of the wind farms may be much less, and not enough.
01:17And that's a good step in the right direction.
01:20But they are still nowhere near the amount of renewable energy they need
01:24to see their transition come to fruition.
01:27The Smart Energy Council has welcomed the news,
01:30but says we need more to meet the growing demand of the state's economy.
01:34Another step towards renewable power in an increasingly volatile energy market.
01:39many more markets will be replaced with state.
01:40But even more markets don't have to be lost,
01:42much more markets can be opened,
01:44as they have gone through the wild to allow it.
01:44and we will not have to do better with a much more wanitae work.
01:44Now, this is a big deal.
