01:00We have a relationship with Pirelli who have given us tyre data so we've got a huge new physics model
01:07for tyres and it's really improved the gameplay side of it.
01:13Pirelli Research and Development supported the development of Forza Motorsport 4 with all the measurements and the characteristics relating to
01:22tyres that are common to all the motorsport and ultra high performance cars.
01:29So for us, rather than actually blending some of Pirelli's test data
01:33with our test data from the past, Turn10 just cut ourselves out.
01:38Now you'd say physics is physics.
01:39You know, why would these different manufacturers actually have different data?
01:42Well, their test methodologies are different, and we are very much perfectionists here.
01:47Having the test methodology be the same
01:49means that we can make sure we're getting data that was matched to work together
01:54across this incredibly complex system.
01:56So by going with one partner and throwing away all the old data
02:00for Forza Motorsport 4, we knew that all data was matched for every tire they tested.
02:07We also were able to ask for custom tests,
02:10including testing it at loads that they generally wouldn't test a production tire at,
02:14testing it at heats that they would never test,
02:16and strange conditions that, yes, you can get into when you're doing extreme drifting,
02:20but they're not really testing for extreme drifting outside of
02:24is the tire going to explode and be a safety hazard.
02:27They're not testing for performance
02:28because you're just not supposed to do that in a tire.
02:30By testing them in all these different ways,
02:33we got a complete suite of every little corner case
02:38of the giant matrix of different ways
02:40the tire is going to be interacting with in the game.
02:46I think the biggest thing we learned from Pirelli out of this partnership
02:50was some of the nuance between accelerative longitudinal friction,
02:55decelerative longitudinal friction, and lateral friction.
02:58We always had those curves different based in our former models as well,
03:03and they blend based on what direction the tire,
03:06what vector the tire is actually taking.
03:07But we found in their test data,
03:10especially when we asked for the custom test data,
03:13that there was this subtlety that was beyond peak,
03:15about 15% beyond peak,
03:17all the way out to about 25%, 30% beyond peak,
03:20that we had it close,
03:22but because we blended between multiple models,
03:25it wasn't really right.
03:27Now, that is us being extremely self-critical
03:30because our simulation is extremely cutting-edge.
03:33Forza 3 simulation, I would stand by all day,
03:36but Forza 4 simulation is even better
03:38because we take this very seriously
03:41and we want to get it perfect.
03:46Forza Motorsport 4 combines Turn 10's passion
03:49for creating entirely new car experiences
03:51with Pirelli's ultra-performance real-world tire data.
03:54The result is the most cutting-edge,
03:56realistic, and fun driving experience around.
03:59Check it out.
