00:17Ben Stahl
00:17Hey everyone, Ben Stahl here, lead designer on Hex
00:20and today I will be showing you guys how to play Hex
00:23Hex is the first ever real MMO TCG
00:26so what that really means is there's tons of stuff going on
00:29but today we're just going to show you the very fundamentals of how to play
00:34so I'm logging in, I'm going to pick my deck
00:36which is a shin hair deck which means it's a swarm of bunnies
00:39designed to just overrun my opponent, turn them into rabbit food
00:42I'll be playing against Dan Clark, the lead developer on Hex
00:46he will be playing an orc deck, so a little more vicious and cutthroat style of a deck
00:51here we are in the arena
00:53I'll remind everybody that Hex is in pre-alpha right now
00:56so what you'll see when it's actually in your hands will be much more polished
01:00but you'll get a pretty good sense of what it's more or less going to look like
01:03okay, he's challenging us
01:04okay, so here we go
01:08so at the start of the game we're both going to draw a hand of seven cards
01:12and if we like our hand, if we think it's got a good mix of troops and special actions
01:16and resource cards to play those cards, those other cards
01:20then we can choose to keep our hand
01:21our hand looks like it has a pretty good mix, so we kept it
01:23looks like Dan is doing the same
01:26he's taking the first turn over there
01:28while he's doing that, I'll talk about some of this other stuff
01:30you see in the bottom left, that's our champion
01:32the vicious yet adorable shin hair champion
01:35we have 20 health
01:37and in the upper left is Dan's champion
01:39the lovely yet ferocious Polka the Conflagrator, an orc
01:42and the goal is for us to take Dan's 20 health down to zero
01:45before he can do the same to us
01:48so it looks like Dan just played a resource on his first turn
01:51and passed over to us
01:52the little orange lines indicate it's our turn
01:54to start every turn we draw a card
01:57and we can always play one resource every turn
01:59so when we play our wild resource, three things are going to happen
02:02we're going to charge our champion
02:04which will give us access to our special, unique charge power
02:07but we'll get to that later
02:08we're going to get a wild threshold
02:10which is that little green leaf that just appeared right there
02:13and we're going to get a mana, which we can use every turn
02:16to spend on playing the other cards in our hand
02:19so you see the orange line around the shin hair militia here
02:22means that's a card in our hand that we can play
02:24so in the upper left, the one means we're going to spend one mana on him
02:28which we're going to do in a second
02:29which is okay because at the start of every turn
02:32our mana is going to replenish
02:33the little green circle underneath the one just is a threshold cost
02:37that just means if we have one wild threshold
02:40which we do for the rest of the game now
02:42we can always play cards that require one wild threshold
02:44so the threshold is kind of like a done deal
02:47once you get the threshold, as long as you have that threshold met
02:50you can always play cards with that threshold amount
02:52so we played our little shin hair militia
02:54he can't attack, that's what that little purple swirly mist is
02:57so we're going to go ahead and end our turn
03:00as soon as our next turn starts we will be able to attack with him
03:03so back over to Dan
03:05Dan's deck is an orc deck
03:07it's very about kind of blindsiding you
03:10many of his troops have the ability to attack right when they enter play
03:14he's also going to have access to some powerful direct damage spells
03:17which he can use to take our troops right off the board and kill them
03:22as well as some other nasty stuff
03:23meanwhile our deck is all about creating
03:25basically just a swarm of bloodthirsty rabbits
03:28and try to overrun Dan with a whole army of rabbits
03:32before he can really do anything else
03:35so our second turn we drew a card
03:37we played another resource
03:39we have some more options for the stuff we can play now
03:41so we're going to play Runs of the Litter
03:43and what this lets us do is create three battlehoppers
03:46so again with the swarm theory
03:49battlehoppers aren't much to look at
03:50those little guys are cute though, aren't they?
03:53battlehoppers are just zero attack, one defense
03:56the little number in the bottom left is their attack
03:58and the bottom right is their defense
04:00again they can't attack because we just put them all into play
04:03but as you'll see next turn
04:06we're going to start to play some powerful action cards
04:08which will really start to pay dividends
04:10for the fact that we are just building this mass of bunnies
04:13our shin hair militia can attack this turn
04:16so we're going to enter our attack step
04:19that's what that blue line means
04:21we're going after Dan's champion
04:22and he turns sideways which we call exhausting
04:25which means he is now attacking Dan
04:27so if Dan had any troops in play
04:29he could choose to block our shin hair militia
04:32and absorb some of the damage
04:33but he doesn't
04:34so we deal the one damage
04:35his champion goes down to 19 health
04:37and that's all we can do
04:39we're out of mana
04:39so we end our turn
04:42ok so Dan's third turn is starting now
04:47hopefully he doesn't play anything too terrifying
04:49ok so that is Dan's charge power
04:52I mentioned earlier
04:53in Hex your champions gain charges
04:56when you play resources and do various other things
04:59so Dan's charge power lets him create this blaze elemental
05:01which is a three attack one defense
05:04and if you saw it has the keyword speed
05:06which lets it attack right away
05:08he doesn't have to wait a turn
05:10so he's attacking us with a blaze elemental
05:11now we can either take the three damage to our champion
05:14but I think I'm going to throw a little bunny in the way
05:17to absorb some of that damage
05:20sorry little guy
05:22you happen to be expendable at this moment in time
05:24so our little bunny is going to block
05:27because our troop only has zero attack
05:29it's not going to do any damage back to Dan's blaze elemental
05:33but his blaze elemental's three attack
05:35will be enough to devour the poor little one health shin hair
05:38so our guy goes to the graveyard as a result
05:41Dan's guy stays in play
05:43but at the end of the turn since it's the blaze elemental
05:45it will die and go to the graveyard
05:48so start of our turn you'll notice our shin hair militia is exhausted
05:50but it's going to ready
05:51at the beginning of our turn we always replenish all our mana points
05:55all of our exhausted cards ready so they can
05:57so they're in use again
05:59and of course we draw a card
06:00so we're going to play another wild resource
06:02boom we now have three wild threshold
06:04which is more than enough to meet all the threshold requirements
06:07of every card in our deck
06:08and now we are going to use our charge power
06:11which will let us create yet another battlehopper
06:14so again keeping with the theme of overwhelming horde of bloodthirsty
06:20bloodthirsty but adorable rabbits
06:22so we're going to play this basic action Evolve
06:24which says each troop we control gets permanent
06:27plus one attack plus one defense
06:29so we just play that
06:30it's an action so it doesn't stay in play like our troop cards
06:33it goes right to the graveyard
06:34you can see the little green numbers here
06:36all of our troops just got that much stronger
06:39so
06:41and I should also mention that that's a permanent effect
06:43so we're going to go ahead and attack with our little army
06:46everybody can attack except for the battlehopper we created this turn
06:49it's four damage going right towards Dan's face
06:51he has no troops so he's forced to take it
06:54boom that's four damage
06:57and oh as I was saying the Evolve creates a permanent effect
07:01so for example let's say Dan played a card that killed our troops
07:04or sent them back to our hands somehow
07:06they would stay permanently affected by that buff
07:11basically forever
07:12unless he had a special card that reverted them to their original form
07:15so Dan's starting his fourth turn
07:20he's going to play a fourth resource
07:22oh and he's summoning a sacrificial zealot
07:24this is another card with speed so it can attack right away
07:28you'll notice it says it can't block fortunately
07:30again the orcs with their full on bloodthirsty all or nothing strategy
07:35okay so he's attacking us
07:37I'm going to say let's choose not to block
07:41we have a ready troop that we could block with there on the end
07:45but we're just going to go ahead and take the three damage this time
07:48so we take it
07:50we'll combat flames in the middle of the board die down
07:53so show combat's over
07:55and it looks like Dan's ending his turn
07:57so boom all of our guys ready
07:59we will draw another card
08:02and
08:03okay there we go
08:04and this turn we're going to summon the concubany
08:09who is very important to our strategy
08:11when she has a special activated ability there
08:14which means if we exhaust her
08:15and we exhaust another one of our shin hair troops
08:17we can give birth if you will to yet another battle hopper
08:21so she won't be able to do that right away
08:25but she will be able to just like attacking
08:27she can't use her activated ability right away
08:29but she'll be primed and ready to go for next turn
08:32to start popping out more rabbits for us
08:34so here's the rest of our squad
08:36we're going to send them right back
08:37we're kind of winning the damage race against Dan right now
08:39so we don't need to hold these guys back for blocking
08:42so we're coming in for five more damage
08:45Dan cannot block
08:46so
08:48yup you'll see boom
08:49there's another five damage right to Dan's face
08:51take that Dan
08:52and we're out of mana
08:53so well actually we have one mana left
08:55but we're going to go ahead and end our turn
08:59okay Dan readies his guy
09:02so
09:03the battle hopper
09:04er sorry
09:05the concubine is going to be real key for us
09:07she's going to basically let us
09:08just create
09:09every single turn
09:10we're going to be able to put another battle hopper into play
09:12so if Dan doesn't have anything to do about that
09:14it's going to start to get real rough on him real fast
09:17and we probably will not be blocking with her this turn
09:20because she's too important to our overall strategy
09:23again
09:24oh gosh what do we have here interrupting me
09:26uh burn
09:27okay
09:27so Dan is playing a burn which will deal two damage directly to our concubine
09:32which uh would be enough to send her and her burnt fur packing to the graveyard
09:37but we actually happen to have a quick action in our hand
09:41which means we can play it on Dan's turn
09:43which says target troop gets plus four attack and plus four defense this turn
09:47to wild growth
09:48so the way it works is since Dan played his burn we actually have a chance to respond
09:53that's what the little sidebar thing on the right is there
09:55it's kind of saying that we actually have a chance to play our wild growth in response to Dan's burn
10:00which we will
10:01which means our wild growth will happen first
10:04so our concubine balloons up into a four attack five defense troop
10:09and then Dan's burn will happen after that
10:12and by the time Dan's burn resolves
10:14the concubine is big enough that she will survive
10:16so that was awesome for us
10:19okay so I'm guessing Dan is maybe still going to attack us here though
10:23he's uh
10:24yes he is because his troop has a special ability not to block
10:27and we're just going to let this through
10:29we want to keep our concubine around like I said
10:32and we're still at 17 so we can afford to take some damage
10:35okay so we're going to take three damage right to the face
10:40and
10:41okay Dan's passing through on his combat damage
10:44so you'll notice combat is broken down into these into different steps
10:47okay it's attack, defense, and then at the end damage
10:51Dan's throwing out another orc troop to do some work
10:55and then he ends the turn
10:57so our little army readies
10:59we will draw a card
11:01it's another shin hair militia
11:02awesome
11:03so we're going to throw a wild resource into play
11:07and we're going to throw down our another shin hair militia
11:12and he won't be able to attack
11:15but the other four dudes can go to town
11:17so we're going to go ahead and enter our combat step and attack
11:23so again everything that can attack highlighted in orange
11:25we'll click all of our guys
11:31and let the bunny beatdowns continue
11:35Dan might choose to block here
11:37he's got a two attack one defense
11:39so he doesn't have a great blocker
11:40but at this point he might think it's worth it to start saving himself some damage
11:45I don't know what's going on that crazy developer had of his
11:49so right now we've declared our attackers
11:51we're waiting for him to choose whether or not he wants to block
11:55it looks like he will be blocking us
11:57okay that's not bad because our guy's got three defense
12:01so it's going to survive the attack that his guy's putting back against us
12:06oh but he's got a ruby aura
12:08which is another quick action
12:10which is going to
12:11so Dan played it right in the middle of combat
12:13which normally you couldn't do with a basic action
12:15which brought his troops attack up to three
12:18and it gave it the ability swift strike
12:20which meant his orc dealt damage first to our troop
12:23which is why our troop has already died before the rest of combat finishes
12:27so that was kind of brutal for us but not too bad
12:31so here we're using the concubiny
12:33we exhaust her and the shin hair militia
12:35to give birth to a brand new baby battlehopper
12:38and he'll be able to start doing some work for us right away
12:42so finishing up combat we deal three damage
12:44Dan's down to seven
12:45so getting within kill range
12:47and we'll go ahead and end our turn
12:51so Dan's got a couple orcs on the board with three attack
12:55we're at 14 health
12:57so we're still doing okay
13:01but again the orc deck can kind of come out of nowhere
13:03and surprise you with some stuff
13:04so we do want to be careful
13:07okay so Dan's got another
13:09he's got a sixth charge on his champion
13:11which means he'll be able to activate his charge power again
13:13in other words create another blaze elemental
13:16so that's kind of scary
13:18and he's also playing a wrath seeker
13:21it looks like
13:22which has the keyword rage
13:24which means whenever this troop attacks
13:26it gets permanent plus two attack
13:28for the rest of the game
13:30and his other orc in play
13:32is going to give that troop speed I'm guessing
13:34which means we're actually going to be looking at
13:36quite a lot of pain coming our way this turn
13:40okay yep there he is
13:41he's using his other orc's ability to grant the wrath seeker speed
13:49okay so the flames of combat light up
13:52Dan is now choosing what he wants to attack with
13:55now Dan's in kind of a tough situation though
13:57he's
13:59he might not want to be too aggressive
14:01because he's almost dead
14:02so yeah it looks like he's holding one of his orcs back
14:04to block with
14:05but sending the other three
14:07to attack us
14:09so we do have one ready shin hair troop that we can block with if we want to
14:14um the rest of our army is all exhausted right now
14:18but uh I think that we would rather try to go for the kill next turn maybe
14:22or deal some more damage so I think
14:24I think I'm just gonna go ahead and take the nine damage which will take us all the way down
14:29to five
14:31and uh see if Dan has anything else
14:33he does not so that's his uh that's his blaze elemental burning away forever thank goodness
14:39and so our turn will start
14:43all of our guys ready we get to draw our card
14:47um okay we're gonna go ahead and uh yes evolve
14:50we will show Dan the evolutionary dominance of the bunny
14:55let's go ahead and put our shin hair militia into play
14:59we'll go ahead and use our charge power again
15:00spending two more charges
15:02and uh that will leave us with one left
15:04so we'll create one more battle hopper
15:07and then it's time to evolve
15:10so here we go all of our guys getting that much stronger
15:13we have two, four, six, eight bunny rabbits in play right now
15:17six of them will be able to attack
15:19so uh yes we will go ahead and enter our attack step
15:22and let's go we got two, four, six, eight, nine
15:27ten damage worth of bunnies attacking Dan
15:30yeah I'll send the concubunny even
15:32she's uh too tired of all this birthing nonsense
15:34she wants to get a little combat in
15:36so Dan's only got one orc he can block with
15:39who knows he might have some trickiness in his hand
15:42he will block
15:43but uh if he has nothing else
15:45that's still gonna be enough damage to push through the victory
15:47so there's the swift strike damage happening before everything else
15:51and wait for it
15:55fingers crossed
15:56boom
15:57eight damage
15:58that's victory for the bunnies
16:00the orcs are defeated
16:02uh okay cool
16:03so there's our celebratory fireworks
16:06and everyone thanks very much for watching
16:09we will have more for you soon
16:11wow
16:13waz bit
16:16laughs
16:20waz bit
16:22wow
