00:06Join us as we take you through the in-depth process of how an iconic GLA unit is created.
00:12This is Command & Conquer Beyond the Battle, Part 2.
00:22So it's really fun to work in the General's universe.
00:24We look back at where the original game was
00:26and some of the fun unit ideas they came up with
00:28and we think, like, how would the GLA have modified this bomb truck idea?
00:32We wanted to basically take some classic General's 1 units,
00:36upgrade them a little, give them a little more oomph.
00:38So the GLA nuke truck in Command & Conquer is a combination of two vehicles from the original General's,
00:43GLA bomb truck and the GLA nuke convoy.
00:47So it was a real fun one to reimagine in Command & Conquer.
00:51Everyone touches a different component and they add personality
00:55and they develop the character of the unit as they go along.
01:00So a unit begins with the design team.
01:03We're sitting in a room coming up with units for a specific faction.
01:06So we'll write up a basic brief for it.
01:08It is a nuke truck.
01:09It is a truck with a nuclear weapon that self-destructs.
01:12We will prototype the unit with grey boxes, repurposed art, whatever,
01:16just to see if the concept actually works within our game engine and our gameplay.
01:19And from there it lands in the art department's hands.
01:22We start in the concepting phase and for us we concept in a 2D form just because it's easy to
01:28rapidly iterate.
01:30When we arrive at what we feel is a very successful concept, it goes to the modeling team.
01:38One thing we want to make that truck, you know, make the original player remember, you know, recall the memory.
01:45Hey, that's a GLA new truck I played 10 years ago.
01:48Basically we want to, you know, maintain the basic shape of the original one, original general one.
01:54And we kind of like spice it up, you know, to make it more sexy and make it more modernized.
02:01You may get this wonderful design, this wonderful model from the modeling team.
02:06And in your mind, automatically you see in your mind how it's going to behave inside the game.
02:13Again, we have this initial conversation with design.
02:16We try to understand what was the scope of the unit, what it could do on the battlefield.
02:22And then we came up with the animation list.
02:24And the animation list included a speed boost.
02:27And so we created an animation that, you know, specifically like makes this unit jiggle a little bit more
02:32and as it charges against your enemy base.
02:35And then we created all the hit animation and all the move animation and so on and so forth.
02:42My job as a visual effects artist is to make people just sit back and go, awesome.
02:49I get with my art director and figure out what exactly we're going to do.
02:53There's some more back and forth between us and design, then I start.
02:57This is a nasty stolen nuclear technology that they don't really know quite how to operate,
03:02but they do know barely how to operate.
03:05They know how to get it running, how to make it dangerous.
03:07So in addition to the normal sort of classic nuclear mushroom cloud,
03:11there's got to be some slop in there as well, some dirty radiation, some nastiness thrown up.
03:19Yeah, for a unit we normally get some of the concept art early on
03:22and we start creating some basic ideas of like,
03:26okay, this is going to be a bigger unit so we need to get some bigger explosions.
03:29For the nuke truck, we did not explode a nuke, unfortunately.
03:33The world probably thanks us for that.
03:35But yeah, we did find some cool explosions that have been recorded and mixed in,
03:40processed those in a certain way that when it explodes, it feels good.
03:45A few months later, the art assets come back.
03:48They're all rigged and animated and fully textured and beautiful.
03:51And we plug those into the game and we're able to play with them right away.
03:54The nuke truck in particular is one of our high-end units,
03:57so balancing its cost is interesting because you only get to use it once.
04:01But at the same time, it's so tremendously powerful that it can't be a cheap thing.
04:06I mean, it's a nuclear bomb strapped on the back of a dump truck,
04:09so we have to price it accordingly and then we have to make sure that
04:13the technology investment is sufficient to reflect how good it is in the game.
04:17So my personal favorite strategy for the nuke truck is to use it in a kind of a flanking move,
04:23where you'll advance on your opponent's base from one angle while secretly gathering a good collection of nuke trucks
04:30from a different angle.
04:32And while you're distracting them with the, you know, with your main attack,
04:35sneak in the nuke trucks from the side and just annihilate whatever flank you attack.
04:39So one of the key strategies I use the nuke truck for is when I scout out an expansion.
04:43I know two, three of them can take out the entire expansion.
04:46So what I do is just send over those three, get one, kill all the workers,
04:52and send the other two to kill the structure.
04:54We've had great reactions so far.
04:56There's a lot more to come and I cannot wait for the players to get their hands on it.
05:01.
05:01.
05:01.
05:01.
05:09Grazie a tutti.
