00:00Hello and welcome along to short highlights of the 117th edition of Milano San Remo.
00:06La classicissima, the 298 kilometre race which is all about the six hours of beautiful build-up
00:14to the most nervous and yet most important 30 minutes of cycling in the world.
00:20The course unchanged, the Paso del Torcino in the middle, the Trecape leading to the two most important climbs
00:28certainly in Italian cycling, the Cipresa and the Poggio di San Remo.
00:33Matthew van der Poel returning to see if he can take his third victory, last year's winner of course.
00:38And Tali Pogaccia, yet to win this monument, he's won all but two, this and Paris-Roubaix.
00:45Could he do it on this day in the world champions jersey?
00:48There would be others who would try and make sure he didn't.
00:51Tom Pidcock, a returning Maus Pedersen too.
00:54Jasper Philipsen over to the left-hand side as well.
00:58One of eight former winners of this race in the field of 175,
01:02who set off from the Lombard capital of Pavia at quarter past ten local time.
01:10Of course the early stage is meant in a nearly 300 kilometre race.
01:14Plenty of opportunity for banter, chatting, even opportunity for the early breakaway
01:19to go the wrong way at a roundabout and come back on itself.
01:22They would have the sort out though and we would be left with nine riders out front as well.
01:28Two from Pulti Visit Malta, two from Team Novo Nordics, two Bardiani riders, two Movistar riders
01:33and the one sole Frenchman, Alexis Faupost for Picnic Pustanel.
01:39At the front, as we'd had one year ago, it was Sylvain Dillier doing the pace setting,
01:45so much so that most of the bunch weren't happy to stay with him.
01:48He kept drifting off the front, determined to hold his watts,
01:51and his own team mates were coming up to check on him, give him food and drink,
01:55and he just carried on in much the same way that he'd done last year.
01:59The breakaway of nine out front were working well together,
02:02extending their lead gradually as they continued to ride southward towards the Paso del Torcino.
02:08Eyes so often on Isaac del Toro, the Mexican champion,
02:12and a lot of thoughts and questions about what his part might be to play
02:16in maybe the Tadde Pogaccia game plan, and who knows, his own maybe.
02:23First of, unfortunately, some quite punctuating crashes on the day as well.
02:28This one involving Davide Ballerini of XTS Astana.
02:34And then on to the aforementioned Paso del Torcino,
02:38the climb which for a long time before the arrival of the Cipresa and the Poggio
02:42was the definitive point of Milano San Remo.
02:47Now it serves to just make things that much harder across the whole day, of course.
02:53Lots of work being done by Lidltrek back in the peloton.
02:58And this group of nine out front were, it has to be said, working very well together.
03:03So was Sylvain Deliette. He was the sole engine on the peloton, as he had been one year before.
03:09And Matthew van der Poel, no doubt delighted to see exactly that.
03:15They took the descent off the back of the Torcino, onto the coast road, the Via Aurelia,
03:20and the first of the nasty looking crashes.
03:23This one affecting quite badly by the looks of it.
03:25Michal Kwiatkowski, Ben Turner down as well.
03:28In fact, three of the Ineos Grenadiers riders down in that one.
03:31And we were onto the first of the Tre Capi, the Capomelli.
03:35At the moment, the breakaway together, but each one of those three Capi was proving enough
03:40to just remove ones and twos from the breakaway all the time as their gap started to tumble.
03:48Inside the final 50 kilometers, and onto the Cervo, the middle of the three Capi.
03:56And then there were only three left as well.
03:59The two Pultevisit Malta riders in their 90s throwback replica kit.
04:05Pogaccia.
04:06Yeah, Walt van Aerts.
04:07Pogaccia.
04:08And Pogaccia is down.
04:10Tare Pogaccia has been caught up in a crash on the left-hand side of the road.
04:13He's gone down very hard.
04:15He's hit the deck.
04:16Left side of his skin suit completely scuffed up.
04:20He's banging his handlebars.
04:22Van Aerts also a victim of that attack.
04:25Yes.
04:26And then all eyes on the chase.
04:28Looking at the back, the shoulder, the hip of Tare Pogaccia.
04:32He had come down really hard.
04:34Walt van Aerts looked less bashed up, but certainly with a lot of work to chase back in
04:39as they came onto the Cipresa.
04:40Now watch this, because the comeback here is quite remarkable.
04:45Tare Pogaccia drawn back up to the front by Brandon McNaughty.
04:48Straight to the front.
04:49A little bit of a work from Isaac del Toro.
04:52And then he went.
04:53Tare Pogaccia taking with him the only two riders that could go this year.
04:57And they were Matthew van der Poel and Tom Pidcock.
05:01Filippo Ganna this time being swapped out for Tom Pidcock.
05:05Those three riders on the Cipresa going clear.
05:08Strength in numbers for Lidl Trek.
05:12Trying to chase as best they could.
05:14The gap was never enormous as you could see there.
05:1611, sorry, 19, 20 seconds over the top of the Cipresa.
05:20But it became obvious that Matthew van der Poel was suffering much more than he normally would be.
05:25Didn't look so smooth.
05:26He was pulling all sorts of faces too.
05:28And the likes of Julien Alaphilippe.
05:30Wout van Aert still chasing to get back in.
05:36And then onto the Poggio.
05:37These three still together.
05:38But Matthew van der Poel rocking and rolling.
05:41Tom Pidcock had spotted it.
05:42Managed to get in front of van der Poel.
05:44And it was Tare Pogaccia just turning the screw again and again.
05:49To see if he could shake out the double Olympic champion Tom Pidcock.
05:52But it was not working.
05:54It became evident that Pidcock was definitely on a very good day.
05:57But was also on his limits.
06:00Matthew van der Poel, the returning champion.
06:03Doing his best to limit his losses as he went over the top of the Poggio.
06:06And into the descent down to the Villaroma and San Remo.
06:10We got these brilliant drone shots following our two leaders at this point.
06:13Initially Tom Pidcock trying to squeeze on Tare Pogaccia through his superior.
06:18Potentially superior descending.
06:20But it didn't work.
06:21These two came to the finish together.
06:24Wout van der Poel escaped the rest to try and get across as well.
06:27And we knew it was going to come down to a sprint between these two.
06:31Tare Pogaccia happy to lead.
06:33Tom Pidcock watching the gap behind all the time.
06:36And ready to start his sprint on the Villaroma.
06:43To deliver the performance that gets him this yearnful victory.
06:47Pogaccia opens up his sprint.
06:49Pidcock still in the shadow of Pogaccia.
06:51Pogaccia trying to win the impossible race.
06:55But Pidcock is coming up alongside him.
06:57The arms go in the air.
06:59And it's very, very close.
07:01But Pogaccia celebrates.
07:03The impossible race has been won by the impossible rider.
07:08Tare Pogaccia has done it.
07:12Yes.
07:13And he'd done it by centimetres as well.
07:17Tom Pidcock timing everything right.
07:19But Tare Pogaccia just had that little bit more.
07:22On the dip.
07:24There it is.
07:26Half a wheel's length.
07:27Maybe.
07:28Something like that.
07:29And the great Slovenian champion.
07:31The rider who some people already say is destined to be the greatest of all time.
07:34Tops the podium.
07:36With Tom Pidcock second.
07:38And Wout van Aert in third.
07:49Today, the most complicated race for you to win.
07:52But you have won it.
07:53And it's been even harder because of the crash.
07:55Tell us all.
07:56Yeah.
07:58I don't know.
08:00When I crashed, for a second I thought it's all over.
08:04Because.
08:05Yeah.
08:05To crash in Imperia.
08:06Just before.
08:07The most important part of the race is not ideal.
08:11Yeah.
08:12But luckily I was quickly back on the bike.
08:15And not too much damage to me or to bike a little bit.
08:19But.
08:21Then I saw my team.
08:23Florian and Felix.
08:24They left everything to come back to the front.
08:28And.
08:29Yeah.
08:30Then.
08:30They gave me.
08:31They gave me back hope.
08:32And.
08:33Yeah.
08:34The legs were still okay.
08:35And.
08:35Brandon and Isaac did the rest on the Cipressa.
08:38And so.
08:38Yeah.
08:39Today.
08:40Yeah.
08:40If there's no team.
08:42Probably I would just go straight.
08:44I would not go right in Cipressa.
08:46But straight to the finish line.
08:48Did you get more hope.
08:49Seeing that Mathieu Van Der Poel was also not at his best on the Poggio.
08:53Yeah.
08:54I mean.
08:55When.
08:56When we were turning.
08:57I was.
08:58Really happy.
08:59Everybody worked.
09:00And.
09:00Yeah.
09:01But.
09:01It was.
09:02It was.
09:03It was a bit headwind.
09:04Not ideal.
09:04Like last year.
09:05And.
09:06Yeah.
09:07It was a bit harder on the middle part.
09:09And then.
09:10When we hit the Poggio.
09:12It was.
09:12It was better wind this year.
09:14For Poggio.
09:15So I tried.
09:16To go all out there.
09:18Yeah.
09:18I.
09:19I was.
09:20Ideal would be to go alone.
09:22But.
09:22Tom was.
09:23Tom Pitcock was really really strong.
09:25And.
09:25Yeah.
09:26Also.
09:26Chapeau to Mathieu.
09:27He's.
09:27He did amazing race also.
09:30So.
09:30Yeah.
09:30But.
09:31In the end.
09:32Yeah.
09:32Me and Tom.
09:33We came together.
09:34And.
09:35Yeah.
09:35I don't know.
09:40Because.
09:42Yeah.
09:42Tom is really really fast guy.
09:45We all know this.
09:46He's punchy.
09:47He's fast.
09:47And.
09:48He looks really in shape.
09:49So.
09:50I was a bit afraid.
09:52When.
09:53Yeah.
09:54When he let me.
09:56Go first.
09:57And.
09:58Yeah.
09:58I was waiting.
09:59As far as long.
10:00But.
10:00I also know that.
10:02I cannot wait too long.
10:03Because.
10:04He has better kick than me probably.
10:06And.
10:06But yeah.
10:07In the end.
10:08I was.
10:09Surprised.
10:10In the end.
10:10It was really close.
10:11She pulled him.
10:12Yeah.
10:15Tom.
10:16No one can be completely disappointed to be second of.
10:19Milano Sanremo.
10:21Behind today.
10:21Pogacar.
10:23Yeah.
10:23I mean.
10:24If you.
10:25Asked me to sign for it this morning.
10:27Maybe I would have signed.
10:29But.
10:30You know.
10:30I was just told it was four centimeters.
10:32And that's.
10:33Very painful.
10:34That it was so close.
10:36But.
10:36Yeah.
10:37I.
10:38I.
10:38I need to.
10:40You know.
10:40Look at the positives.
10:41And the.
10:43Look at it in a different perspective.
10:44Because.
10:45I think I did a great ride.
10:47And.
10:48Yeah.
10:49To.
10:49To today.
10:50I mean.
10:50He crashed.
10:50I mean.
10:51Look at the state of him.
10:52And he was still there fighting.
10:55Every.
10:55Every way to try and win this race.
10:57And.
10:57I have massive respect for that.
10:58I mean.
10:59As.
11:00Annoying as he is.
11:01Being.
11:02So good.
11:03It's.
11:04Yeah.
11:05It was impressive.
11:06But.
11:06Yeah.
11:07I can't help but be disappointed right now.
11:09Would you have preferred today to launch the sprint later?
11:13No.
11:13Earlier.
11:14I tried to make him go earlier.
11:16But he.
11:17He was.
11:18He is.
11:18Yeah.
11:19He knows what he's doing.
11:20Now you know that.
11:22This is a race.
11:22You can win.
11:24Yeah.
11:25Today told me he's not going to come back now.
11:27So.
11:28Then I need to.
11:28What motorbike am I going to have to sit behind?
11:31Thank you very much.
11:32Okay.
11:33It could have worked for the win.
11:35It worked for the third place.
11:36Tell us about this attack at the bottom of the podium.
11:40Yeah.
11:41It was an attack I always had in my mind if there was a moment of hesitation.
11:46But.
11:47Yeah.
11:47Today it was like you say for the third place and unfortunately for the win.
11:51But.
11:52I think.
11:53Yeah.
11:54I reached the maximum possible after.
11:56After crashing and having to change my bike.
11:59So.
11:59So late before the Cypressa.
12:01So.
12:01Yeah.
12:02I'm happy with the podium.
12:04Podium finish.
12:04Have you hoped at some stage that today and Tom would watch each other?
12:10I mean in Sanremo for sure you have to believe until the last moment.
12:14You never know what happens in the front.
12:16And.
12:17As a team we really fought back.
12:19To.
12:20To come in a position to race for.
12:22For the podium or for the win.
12:24So.
12:24We did the maximum.
12:26That we could.
12:27And.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Obviously they.
12:30They had a bit of.
12:32Room to.
12:33To play.
12:33And.
12:34That was just enough for them to be first and second.
12:36And.
12:36I guess they deserve it.
12:38You said the best result possible.
12:39Does it give you hope.
12:41For the coming classic.
12:42More north.
12:43Well.
12:44I felt.
12:45Good coming.
12:45Coming here.
12:46And.
12:46I have to say.
12:48Yeah.
12:49The legs were also really really good in the race.
12:52Unfortunately I had to use a lot of energy to come back instead of racing in the front.
12:56But.
12:56Yeah.
12:57I take positives from this race of course.
