Somalia became poor due to a combination of long-term political instability, civil war, weak governance, and repeated conflicts that disrupted economic development. After the central government collapsed in 1991, the country experienced years of insecurity, lack of infrastructure, and limited public services. This made it difficult for businesses to operate, reduced foreign investment, and slowed economic growth. Environmental challenges such as droughts and famine have also contributed to poverty, along with reliance on subsistence farming and limited industrial development.
