00:00But I think we've reached the end now, you and I.
00:04You're gonna take the coward's way out?
00:07Run away to more lives?
00:09Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:11And today, we're counting down our picks
00:13for the most surprising times an A-lister blew us away
00:16with their voice work.
00:17Since we'll be focusing on unexpectedly great performances,
00:20we'll be excluding those who were already well-known for voiceovers.
00:35Number 50.
00:36Billy Joel as Dodger, Oliver and Company.
00:40Chill out, man.
00:41I don't need cats.
00:43It's too much fun.
00:44I've been watching you,
00:46and I think you're in serious need of some professional guidance.
00:49Who would have thought The Piano Man
00:51would make for such great company?
00:53Stepping behind the mic for a street savoir-faire Jack Russell Terrier,
00:57Billy Joel perfectly encapsulated Dodger's laid-back attitude.
01:02It's even more impressive considering he'd turned down scripts for years,
01:06thinking he wouldn't be good on camera.
01:08Well, considering this was an animated film, it was the best of both worlds.
01:22Why should he worry? Why should he care?
01:25Your guess is as good as ours.
01:26Making best use of his pipes and effervescent charm,
01:30it's easy to forget Billy Joel was a musician first and actor second.
01:34All right, kid. What'd I tell you guys?
01:37Old Dodge can really pick him, huh?
01:39No. 49. Genesis Rodriguez as Honey Lemon. Big Hero 6.
01:45Jesse! Oh my gosh! You must be a hero! I've heard so much about you!
01:54Perfect timing!
01:55Jumping from Spanish telenovelas and supporting roles to the pearly gates of Disney,
02:00Genesis Rodriguez claimed our hearts with her voice alone.
02:03Honey Lemon bursts with optimism, creativity, and passion,
02:07and Rodriguez makes sure you feel that in each and every line.
02:11I know, right? Chemical metal embrittlement!
02:15Not bad, Honey Lemon.
02:17While Big Hero 6 has a pretty incredible ensemble across the board,
02:21there's just something about Honey Lemon that stands out.
02:23Maybe it's Rodriguez's infectious delivery,
02:26maybe it's seeing a girl own her nerdiness,
02:28or maybe it's a mix of both.
02:30Either way, it's quite the chemical reaction.
02:33No!
02:37Number 48. Kevin Kline as Tulio and Kenneth Branagh as Miguel.
02:42The Road to El Dorado.
02:44Ah, you fight like my sister!
02:46I fought your sister! That's a compliment!
02:48Blackard, heathen!
02:50With their heaps of high-profile films and award-winning performances,
02:54it's safe to say Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh are better known for being on-screen than off it.
02:59And yet, when they stepped behind the mic for The Road to El Dorado,
03:02they didn't miss a beat.
03:04Despite only being able to emote with their voice,
03:07they both imbue their characters with the exact kind of thrifty energy you'd expect.
03:12Both?
03:13Both.
03:13Both.
03:14Both is good.
03:16The biggest compliment we can give is that it doesn't even seem like this is Klein or Branagh.
03:21When you're immersed in this story,
03:23it just sounds like Tulio and Miguel to us.
03:25It's tough to be a god
03:28Fred where mortals have a try
03:32be deified when really you're a sham.
03:36Number 47.
03:38Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, the Super Mario Brothers movie.
03:42Do not catch that mushroom!
03:43You'll die!
03:45Oh, I'm sorry.
03:46That one's perfectly fine.
03:48That's a little mushroom, man.
03:50It's a me.
03:51No, not Mario.
03:52Though we have to give it up for the whole cast here.
03:54From Anya Taylor-Joy's confident Princess Peach to Jack Black's Bowser making us rethink
03:59our stance on Peaches, these actors brought their A-game.
04:03But if there's one power-up star to give out, we have to hand it to Keegan-Michael Key.
04:08Okay, so they're messing with you.
04:09And I don't like it.
04:15What do you guys, um, what do you want to eat?
04:18His hilariously over-the-top reactions feel the closest to his gaming counterpart,
04:23on top of just being genuinely funny.
04:25It's hard to stand out in such a stacked cast,
04:28especially in a world as bright as the Mushroom Kingdom.
04:30But from Keegan-Michael Key, we shouldn't even be surprised.
04:34That is how you princess!
04:37Number 46, Tessa Thompson as Lady and Justin Theroux as Tramp.
04:42Lady and the Tramp.
04:44Trusty?
04:45Correct, uh, but you-
04:46Did you just hear everything that I said?
04:47Yes.
04:47Where is your collar?
04:49Yeah, long story.
04:49Where is Trusty?
04:51Um, Trusty, I'm sure, is somewhere.
04:53Despite being lost in the shuffle of Disney Plus releases,
04:56this live-action remake brought full-force performances from its pair of well-cast leads.
05:02We all know Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux can act,
05:05but portraying an authentic relationship with nothing more than verbal lines is easier said than done.
05:11Thankfully, they both earn a home run,
05:13to the point the only complaint we have is how little it's been discussed.
05:17Well, thanks for your help.
05:19I mean, yeah, you're welcome.
05:20Yeah, thank you too.
05:22Have fun at home, baby.
05:23I mean, with the baby.
05:25What?
05:26No, um, never mind.
05:28A pair of underrated performances in an already underrated film,
05:32we have to put some respect on Thompson and Theroux's names.
05:35If you haven't seen this movie, here's your official call to action.
05:39I thought those two were gonna sit down and join us.
05:43Nah, don't worry.
05:44They won't bother us anymore.
05:45And they're back.
05:48Number 45.
05:49Emma Thompson as Queen Eleanor.
05:51Brave.
05:52I would advise you to make your peace with this.
05:54The clans are coming to present their suitors.
05:56It's not fair.
05:58Ugh, merda.
05:59It's marriage.
06:00It's not the end of the world.
06:01Something of a literal mama bear,
06:04Queen Eleanor needs to be stern, protective, and traditional
06:08without becoming completely unlikable.
06:10It's a tough line to walk,
06:12especially given the, um, interesting arc her character goes in.
06:16Enter Emma Thompson.
06:17She exudes elegance in every role,
06:20and brave is no exception.
06:21However, she also adds a touch of warmth to a character
06:24that could have come off as straight cold.
06:26You embarrassed me.
06:28I followed the rules.
06:28You don't know what you've done.
06:30It'll be fire and sword if it's not set right.
06:33Just listen.
06:34I am the queen.
06:36In Thompson's capable hands,
06:38Queen Eleanor becomes a total highlight of the film.
06:40She isn't the one shooting arrows,
06:42but Thompson hit a bullseye in every way that counts.
06:45You changed.
06:46Oh, darling.
06:49We both have.
06:51Number 44.
06:52The whole cast.
06:54The Madagascar franchise.
06:55I thought we were your friends.
06:57What's a big deal?
06:58I was coming back in the morning.
06:59Don't you ever do this again.
07:00Do you hear me?
07:01Do you hear him?
07:02Guys, we're running out of time.
07:04Oh, Melman.
07:05Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria
07:07were bona fide celebrities in the 2000s,
07:10and it'd be wrong not to give credit
07:12to the amazing cast that made that possible.
07:15We mean Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer,
07:17Chris Rock, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
07:19The chemistry writes itself.
07:20It's impossible to single out any one of their performances
07:23since they all play off each other
07:25to create a holistic cast dynamic.
07:28What the hell do you want?
07:29Howdy!
07:30Oh, look at us.
07:32We're all here together, safe and sound.
07:36Yeah, here we are.
07:38Stiller nails the emotional beats,
07:40Schwimmer and Rock bring the comedic relief,
07:42and Pinkett Smith is all sass all the time,
07:45as long as their residents
07:46will happily book another trip to Madagascar.
07:49Cheap meds, eh?
07:51You know, I wouldn't even mind coming back here
07:53for a visit sometime.
07:54Yeah, I can do that.
07:55You can say that again.
07:56Number 43.
07:58Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug,
08:00The Hobbit, The Desolation of Smaug,
08:02and The Hobbit, The Battle of the Five Armies.
08:05Come now.
08:06Don't be shy.
08:09Step into the light.
08:12Smaug is a massive, army-leveling dragon
08:15who gets star-billing in an entry
08:17of one of the greatest fantasy franchises ever made.
08:20Who could possibly embody
08:22such a larger-than-life character?
08:24None other than Benedict Cumberbatch, of course.
08:26His bassy bravado absolutely commands the screen.
08:29Or our eardrums?
08:31You get the point.
08:32I am fire.
08:37I am death.
08:43Seeing him cast judgment on massive armies
08:45is practically a religious experience.
08:48Cumberbatch can be quite eccentric on screen,
08:50so all the kudos to him for fading into this role.
08:53We totally buy him as a dragon,
08:55and that's a compliment.
08:56Tell me, wretch,
09:00how now should you challenge me?
09:05Number 42.
09:07Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner, Soul.
09:10Come on, 22, think about it.
09:12You hated music until you were in my body.
09:15You hated everything until you were me.
09:18At the risk of coming off cheesy,
09:20this movie needed a leading man with,
09:22you guessed it, soul.
09:23Jamie Foxx had to do a whole lot more
09:25than show up and read some lines.
09:27He needed to make Joe's journey feel complete,
09:30resonant, and deep,
09:31even though he spends part of it as an animal.
09:33While Foxx's acting chops are no secret,
09:36he really stepped up to the challenge of voice work here.
09:38I'm just afraid that if I died today,
09:42that my life would have amounted to nothing.
09:45It's a shame Soul went under the radar for so many,
09:48because Foxx almost single-handedly
09:50turned it into a Pixar classic.
09:52Your spark isn't your purpose.
09:54That last box fills in when you're ready to come live.
10:00And the thing is,
10:02you're pretty great at jazzing.
10:04Number 41.
10:06Ving Rhames as Cobra Bubbles.
10:08Lilo and Stitch.
10:10I am the one they call when things go wrong.
10:15And things have indeed gone wrong.
10:19Bubbles.
10:20Cobra Bubbles.
10:21Each line booms with presence and authority.
10:24But for Ving Rhames,
10:25it doesn't even seem like he's trying.
10:27The man is a legend on the screen.
10:29And none of that was lost in the leap to animation.
10:32You can practically feel his classic,
10:35incredulous expression in every line.
10:37Is this what she needs?
10:39It seems clear to me that you need her
10:41a lot more than she needs you.
10:44Of course it helps that Cobra Bubbles
10:46feels like he was written for Rhames' sultry register.
10:49Or maybe it's Rhames' scene-stealing work
10:52that made Bubbles worthwhile in the first place.
10:54It's a chicken-egg situation.
10:56But the fact of the matter is,
10:57this was a match made in Casting Heaven.
11:00CIA.
11:01Former.
11:02Save the planet once.
11:04Convinced an alien race that mosquitoes
11:06were an endangered species.
11:09Now, about your house.
11:11Number 40.
11:12Keith David as Dr. Facilier.
11:14The Princess and the Frog.
11:16Gentlemen.
11:18Enchanté.
11:20A tip of the hat from Dr. Facilier.
11:24How y'all doing?
11:25Across both stage and screen,
11:27few actors have a legacy as rich as Keith David.
11:30He's been in comedies, dramas, voiceovers,
11:33and everything in between.
11:34And yet, his role as Dr. Facilier
11:36is what finally made everyone sit up
11:38and realize this guy's voice is something else.
11:40If you wait, don't blame me.
11:44You can blame my friends on the other side.
11:52David fully commits to the slimy charm of Facilier's plot
11:56and as a result,
11:57turns him into one of Disney's most entertaining villains.
12:00He manages to be menacing, enigmatic, whimsical,
12:04sometimes all at the same time.
12:06If you weren't a fan of David's voice work before,
12:09The Princess and the Frog definitely made you a true believer.
12:11Now you're going to spend the rest of your life
12:14being a slimy little frog.
12:16Number 39.
12:18Ed Helms as Mr. Benjamin Krupp slash Captain Underpants.
12:22Captain Underpants, the first epic movie.
12:24Let's see.
12:26Underpants.
12:27Check.
12:28Captain.
12:29Also check.
12:30I'm pretty sure I'm Captain Underpants.
12:33In a lesser actor's hands,
12:35a principal who unwittingly dons tighty-whities
12:38to defeat supervillains could have been a throwaway part.
12:40But Ed Helms has yet to see a punchline he can't nail.
12:44And he wasn't starting here.
12:46With justice, honor, and a distinct lack of a costume,
12:49he made Captain Underpants the hero we all needed.
12:52Well, you seem terrific.
12:54You're hired.
12:55What?
12:56Excellent.
12:57Every joke lands.
12:58Every fight effort hits its mark.
13:00And every emotional beat is intact too.
13:03It's a surprisingly committed performance for, once again,
13:06a character who literally spends half the runtime in his underpants.
13:09Ed Helms is just that guy.
13:11The truth is a slippery thing.
13:14And you nailed it.
13:18Now it is time to fly again.
13:20Farewell, my dear sidekicks.
13:22Number 38.
13:23Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen.
13:25The Cars franchise.
13:29In this case of stunt casting done right,
13:32Owen Wilson put pedal to the metal and left everyone in his dust.
13:36While the Cars movies aren't exactly regarded as Pixar's best,
13:40no one can fault Wilson's work as Lightning McQueen.
13:43The character has been through a lot in the series,
13:46from high-speed races to devastating personal lows,
13:48and even some espionage plots.
13:51Yet, somehow Wilson's consistent vocal performance makes it all feel natural.
13:56Look, if I don't win, I'll sell all the mud flaps you got.
13:59But if I do win, I decide when I'm done.
14:03Deal?
14:04Even though he's primarily known for comedy,
14:06we have to point out how well he captures McQueen's emotional moments.
14:09Cars have feelings too, and Wilson makes sure you know it.
14:12Today's the day, Cruz.
14:14You're getting your shot.
14:15What?
14:15I started this race, and you're gonna finish it.
14:19Number 37.
14:20Christian Bale as Howl.
14:22Howl's Moving Castle.
14:24Now, straighten your legs and start walking.
14:32See?
14:33Not so hard, is it?
14:34A year into his time as Batman,
14:37Christian Bale landed the title role in a freaking Miyazaki film.
14:41Talk about pressure.
14:42The wild part, though, is how amazingly Bale slips into Howl's eclectic personality.
14:47His rugged delivery is a great match for the character,
14:50but he balances the softer parts just as well.
14:52I'm just setting things up so that all of you can live a comfortable life, Sophie.
14:56With all the flowers you've got in this valley, you could easily open up a flower shop.
15:01Considering the technical aspects of dubbing over an anime film,
15:04Bale deserves all the flowers for this.
15:07It could have easily been an easy paycheck.
15:08But you can tell Bale took the role seriously,
15:11and it pays off with one of his best and most criminally forgotten performances.
15:17Sorry.
15:17I've had enough of running away, Sophie.
15:19And now I've got something I want to protect.
15:22It's you.
15:24Number 36.
15:25Jenny Slate as Marcel.
15:27Marcel the shell with shoes on.
15:28Do your parents work?
15:30Have you ever met a chef?
15:31What happens if you break this?
15:32Have you ever eaten a raspberry?
15:33Um, and what was that like?
15:36Meet Marcel.
15:37Jenny Slate created him in an improvised YouTube series.
15:40His squeaky voice and relatable struggles turned him into a sensation,
15:45eventually leading to a full-on feature film.
15:47Marcel's just that lovable.
15:49But you can't mention him without giving credit to the woman behind it all, Slate herself.
15:54Sometimes, if I don't have a way to itch my itch,
15:56the only thing I can do is I just stand there.
15:58I just let it get me, and I just, I just have to scream it out.
16:05Since she created and voiced the character,
16:07you can feel the deep grasp she has on Marcel's personality.
16:11Not to mention, her vocal delivery is simply adorable.
16:14It doesn't seem like she's acting as Marcel.
16:17It truly feels like she is him.
16:19Minus the actual shell part, of course.
16:34Number 35.
16:35Maya Hawke as Anxiety.
16:37Inside Out 2.
16:38Hello, everybody!
16:40Oh my gosh, I am just such a huge fan of yours,
16:43and now, here I am, meeting you, face to face.
16:47Okay, how can I help?
16:48Coming from her breakout in Stranger Things,
16:50and as the daughter of two beloved actors,
16:53everyone knew Maya Hawke was the real deal.
16:55But her turn as the literal embodiment of Anxiety
16:58made her one of Hollywood's best and brightest.
17:01We can't imagine anyone else manifesting such a manic,
17:04electric energy with their voice alone.
17:07Okay, don't worry, Riley.
17:09You're in good hands.
17:10Now, let's change everything about you.
17:12In that way, Hawke did the impossible.
17:15She created a character we could all relate to,
17:17fear and understand at the same time.
17:20It's a shame voiceover roles don't get the same kind of awards attention
17:23as their on-screen counterparts,
17:25because we'd say this is worth a lot of trophies.
17:28I'll tell you.
17:29First, mom and dad are very disappointed.
17:31We don't go pro and we find work as an ethnomusicologist,
17:33even though we don't really know what that is.
17:35We have no friends, and we die alone.
17:37Number 34.
17:38David Bradley as Geppetto,
17:40Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
17:42You're not my son.
17:45Don't come near me.
17:46The boy's telling the truth, Master Geppetto.
17:48It's full of cockroaches.
17:51When you think of this enduring character actor,
17:54strong, demanding roles probably come to mind.
17:56So it's a great feat that David Bradley could divorce himself from that
18:00and step into the shoes of a character layered with sentimentality.
18:03Geppetto is a hard role to get right.
18:05No one talks to the pedestal like that.
18:09He's a puppet.
18:11Just a puppet.
18:12Being Pinocchio's father,
18:13there's a lot of tricky emotions to track.
18:15But against all odds,
18:17Bradley will leave you reaching for a Kleenex box before the credits even roll.
18:20It's difficult to upstage Pinocchio in his own movie,
18:23particularly when you're cast against type.
18:26But that's just David Bradley for you.
18:28I was trying to make you someone you were not.
18:34So, don't be Carlo or anyone else.
18:38Be exactly who you are.
18:41Number 33.
18:42Robert Pattinson as the Gray Heron.
18:45The boy and the Heron.
18:46Ha, ha, ha, ha.
18:48Your presence is requested.
18:55Edward Cullen, Batman, and bizarre sagely Heron.
18:59Yeah, one of those is not like the other.
19:01Robert Pattinson is known on the big screen for portraying a wide range of wild roles.
19:06But in his time as the Heron in Miyazaki's 2023 feature is just something else.
19:11Oh, that was one of my better creations.
19:14Such a shame, really.
19:16It would have lasted longer if you hadn't touched her.
19:19For one, he doesn't even sound like Robert Pattinson.
19:21Instead, the voice, bold, scratchy, and anything but smooth.
19:25But we have to admit, it really works.
19:27Based on this inspired delivery, it's clear Pattinson was hired for his talent instead of just his name.
19:33I hope you know you're not going to find Natsko here.
19:37I know.
19:38You say the word, I'll take you straight to her.
19:41Number 32.
19:42Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna.
19:45The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
19:47You're unskilled.
19:50Untrained.
19:53And unworthy.
19:56Ah, good old Knuckles.
19:58He's been voiced by dozens upon dozens of actors over the years.
20:01None as high profile as Idris Elba, though.
20:04He's definitely a name for the cast list.
20:06But one look at him in the booth proves that this is more than a paycheck for him.
20:10He's wearing freaking Knuckles gloves after all.
20:13I have disordered my marshmallow.
20:15I have disordered my marshmallow.
20:18At a performance level, Elba captures the competitive dopiness that's made the Echidna such a beloved character.
20:24It's not just the deep voice.
20:26It's every punchline, every quip, and every battle roar feeling just distinctly Knuckles.
20:32Celebrity or not, Elba is our Echidna.
20:35I am having the fun.
20:37What is ice cream?
20:39Number 31.
20:40Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel Madrigal.
20:43Encanto.
20:43We're all the people, our fantastical and magical.
20:47That's who we are in the family Madrigal.
20:50Adios.
20:51Okay, we have to come clean.
20:52This one took us completely by surprise.
20:55Fans of Stephanie Beatriz almost certainly know her for playing the gruff, no-nonsense Rosa on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
21:01Who knew her voice could be so bubbly?
21:03Or that she could sing her face off?
21:05Mirabel is almost a complete 180 from every role Beatriz was known for at the time.
21:10But she was up to the task, and then some.
21:13And I might not be super strong like Luisa, or effortlessly perfect like Señorita Perfecta Isabella,
21:20who's never even had a bad hair day, but whatever.
21:24We truly can't imagine the Madrigal family without her voice leading the charge.
21:28Just be warned.
21:29If you check out Brooklyn Nine-Nine after, you'll be in store for a real vocal whiplash.
21:34I've only had Arlo for a day and a half.
21:36But if anything happened to him, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself.
21:39Number 30, Jay Baruchel as Hiccup horrendous Haddock III, the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
21:46So, what should we name it?
21:49Yeah, itchy armpit it is.
21:50Naturally possessing a nerdy, nasally voice, Jay Baruchel couldn't have been better suited to play Hiccup,
21:57a scrawny Viking living in his mighty father's shadow.
22:00Keeping this much raw Viking-ness contained, there will be consequences!
22:06I'll take my chances.
22:07A lesser actor might have portrayed this character as a one-dimensional nerd.
22:11Baruchel turns in a multi-layered performance, however, bringing out Hiccup's strength, wisdom,
22:16and compassion as he forms a powerful bond with a dragon.
22:20That a... toothless...
22:23I could have sworn you had...
22:28teeth.
22:29As this series progresses, Baruchel develops Hiccup into a brave, noble leader with a great deal of depth.
22:36All the while, Baruchel maintains an offbeat charm that distinguishes Hiccup from the rest of the crowd.
22:41You never cease to amaze me, bud.
22:49Number 29, Patton Oswalt as Remy, Ratatouille.
22:53Even with the embarrassment of riches in the Pixar casting department,
22:57it's hard to compete with Patton Oswalt in Ratatouille.
22:59It's not really a smoky taste.
23:01It's a certain...
23:02Oh, it's kind of like a...
23:03You know, it's got like this...
23:05BABOOM!
23:06SAP kind of taste.
23:07Don't you think?
23:08What would you call that flavor?
23:10Lightning-y?
23:11Yeah.
23:12It's lightning-y!
23:14A rat with a love for cooking, Remy naturally finds division between his passion and the dark
23:19and damp world he's been bred into.
23:21With such a defined character trait driving the plot,
23:24the movie hinges on Oswalt being able to get the audience to empathize with Remy immediately.
23:30But boy, does he make it look or sound effortless.
23:33So fluidly is he able to suffuse the character with the enthusiasm needed,
23:38yet with a dash of that familiar, artistic stubbornness.
23:42Ah!
23:42No, no, no, no, no!
23:44Spit that out right now!
23:46I have got to teach you about food.
23:49Close your eyes.
23:50Now.
23:51Take a bite of this.
23:53No, no, no!
23:55Don't just hork it down!
23:57Oswalt's vocal career would only skyrocket after this movie,
24:00and we can definitely see or hear why.
24:05Number 28.
24:06Jerry Orbach as Lumiere.
24:08Beauty and the Beast.
24:09This Disney classic is chock full of vocal talent.
24:13While Angela Lansbury's Mrs. Potts is oh so charming,
24:17for this entry we have to give it to Jerry Orbach as Lumiere.
24:20So, you fall in love with her, she falls in love with you,
24:24and poof, the spell is broken.
24:26We'll be human again by midnight.
24:28Orbach was a world-class actor who tore Broadway up.
24:32Though sadly, the star passed away in 2004,
24:35he left behind a legacy on stage and on screen that will never be forgotten.
24:39His performance as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, like much of his work, is timeless.
24:44Course by, course, one by one, till you shout,
24:54Let me sing you off to sleep as you digest.
24:58Through the candelabra, we get a taste of the actor's immeasurable talent.
25:02He brings a theatrical sense to Lumiere that makes him impossible to ignore.
25:07Everything from his iconic rendition of Be Our Guest to his charming persona is executed perfectly.
25:13Thank God's worth, I am surprised at you.
25:16She's not a prisoner, she's our guest.
25:19We must make her feel welcome here.
25:21Number 27.
25:22Ralph Fiennes as Pharaoh Ramesses II, The Prince of Egypt.
25:26No stranger to playing tyrannical villains throughout his career,
25:30Ralph Fiennes walks a fine line between cruelty and sympathy in this epic musical.
25:35I am the morning and the evening star.
25:38Ramesses, it shall be as I say.
25:42I pardon forever all crimes of which he stands accused.
25:47At once refined and wicked in his vocal stylings,
25:50the British actor conveys the moral complexity of a man torn between his duty as a ruler
25:55and the love he has for his brother Moses.
25:57I do not know this God.
26:00Neither will I let your people go.
26:03Ramesses, please, you must listen.
26:05I will not be the weak link.
26:07Even as the story progresses and his treatment of the Hebrews becomes more unforgivable,
26:12Fiennes still allows us to believe Ramesses is capable of change.
26:16I am Pharaoh.
26:18Something else is coming.
26:20Something much worse than anything before.
26:22Though he plays an irredeemable antagonist,
26:24his performance cuts straight to the core of a misunderstood man
26:28whose stubbornness ultimately prevents him from doing the right thing.
26:32My father had the right idea about how to deal with your people.
26:36Ramesses.
26:36And I think it's time I finished the job.
26:39Ramesses.
26:40And there shall be a great cry in all of Egypt.
26:44Number 26.
26:45Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best, Frozone, The Incredibles franchise.
26:50Yeah, you say peace.
26:53I kind of think you mean the other thing.
26:55A few years before debuting as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
27:00Samuel L. Jackson saved the day as this slick superhero.
27:04Gotcha!
27:05Possessing ice powers and a laid-back personality,
27:08Frozone is cool in every sense of the word.
27:11So as you can imagine, Jackson was an ideal casting choice.
27:14You want to catch a robber?
27:15No.
27:15Tell you the truth, I'd rather go bowling.
27:18Look, what if we actually did what our wives think we're doing?
27:22In The Incredibles, Jackson hits every one-liner out of the park,
27:26making Frozone sound like a total badass.
27:29He additionally hits all the right notes as Frozone's alter ego, Lucius Best,
27:34acting as a supportive best friend to Bob Parr.
27:37Hey, is the night still young?
27:38You're very late.
27:39How do I look?
27:40Good.
27:40Oh, the mask.
27:41You still got the mask.
27:42Of course, Jackson's best line delivery occurs during an argument between Lucius and his wife,
27:47Honey.
27:48We'll never get tired of hearing Jackson ask,
27:50Where's my super suit?
27:51Honey!
27:52What?
27:53Where's my super suit?
27:55What?
27:55Where is my super suit?
27:59Number 25, John C. Reilly as Wreck-It Ralph, the Wreck-It Ralph franchise.
28:05Anywho, what else?
28:06Uh, I'm a wrecker.
28:09I wreck things, professionally.
28:11I'm gonna wreck it!
28:12Wreck-It Ralph is a different kind of Disney villain.
28:15He's not sinister, calculating, or even really bad.
28:18He actually wants to be a good guy, but simply doesn't understand what being a hero is all about.
28:23Blame me if you think video games have ruined the world.
28:26John C. Reilly is delightful as the titular character, supplying him with a childlike innocence.
28:32As we all know, however, children can be selfish, naive, and aggressive, too.
28:37Well, unless you've got a go-kart hidden in the fat folds of your neck, I can't help you.
28:44In Ralph's case, he's basically a troubled kid trapped in an overgrown body.
28:48Even when Ralph is at his worst, though, Reilly still manages to make him lovable and even identifiable.
28:54It's game over for both of you!
28:57No.
28:59Just for me!
29:01Behind his hostile tendencies, there's an individual with a genuine soul,
29:06which Reilly brings out of Ralph as he discovers his true purpose in life.
29:10Turns out I don't need a medal to tell me I'm a good guy.
29:14Because if that little kid likes me...
29:20How bad can I be?
29:21Number 24.
29:23Mandy Moore as Rapunzel.
29:25Tangled.
29:25The story of Rapunzel is one that most of us grew up with and no like the back of our
29:30hands.
29:31Yet in Tangled, Mandy Moore makes it feel new and fresh.
29:34Too weak to handle myself out there, huh, Mother?
29:37Well, tell that to my friend, Peggy.
29:40She certainly has a knack for creating memorable characters,
29:44like Jamie in A Walk to Remember and Rebecca in This Is Us.
29:48Rapunzel undoubtedly belongs on that list.
29:51Moore's portrayal of the princess feels authentic and relevant.
29:54For like the first time ever, I'm completely free.
30:01I could go running and racing and dancing and chase...
30:07With her angelic singing voice and relatable personality,
30:10she makes it hard not to love the character.
30:13Her unforgettable performance,
30:14combined with Zachary Levi's charming portrayal of Flynn,
30:18breathes new life into this fairy tale.
30:20All at once, everything is different,
30:26now that I see you.
30:30Number 23.
30:31Will Ferrell as Megamind.
30:33Megamind.
30:34Even the smallest bite from Arachnus Dethicus
30:37will instantly paralyze...
30:39Oh!
30:40Get it off!
30:41Will Ferrell has a knack for taking potentially unlikable characters
30:44and giving them a lovable quality.
30:46Megamind is a perfect example.
30:48An alien who aspires to take over Metro City,
30:51Megamind is egotistical, manipulative, and dastardly.
30:58Deep down, though, he's not exactly evil.
31:01He just sees super villainy as his only career option.
31:04Of course, once he finally defeats his nemesis,
31:07his existence suddenly lacks meaning.
31:09Always thirsty.
31:10Never satisfied.
31:12I understand you, little well-dressed bird.
31:15Ferrell totally throws himself into the role,
31:17having a ton of fun playing a childish mastermind
31:20who's prone to failure.
31:21My face is on fire right now.
31:25If you're gonna do this at home,
31:26don't do it with a can of spray paint.
31:28Use...
31:29Go to a makeup or a hobby store.
31:32Simultaneously, Ferrell makes us sympathize
31:34with this misguided anti-hero
31:36who just needs a push in the right direction.
31:38You did it.
31:39You won.
31:40Well, I finally had a reason to win.
31:45You.
31:46Number 22.
31:48Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon,
31:50the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
31:52By the time the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie premiered,
31:55Bradley Cooper already had two Oscar nominations under his belt.
31:58They were really easy to steal.
32:00You'd think that voicing a genetically engineered raccoon
32:02would be a step back.
32:04Don't call me a raccoon!
32:05But Rocket turned out to be one of Cooper's most beloved characters.
32:08While he had hilarious dialogue to work with,
32:11Cooper's smart-ass delivery and timing
32:13made the character feel whole.
32:15Let's make something clear.
32:17This one here is our booty.
32:20Whenever Rocket speaks,
32:21we don't hear Cooper putting on a thick accent.
32:23We just hear Rocket.
32:25How on earth were they gonna turn us over
32:26when you only gave them a count of five?
32:28We didn't have time to work out the minutia of the plan.
32:32This is what we get for acting altruistically.
32:34While often a source of comedic relief,
32:36Cooper also does an authentic job
32:38at bringing out Rocket's fear and insecurity.
32:40He called me vermin!
32:43She called me rodent!
32:45Cooper played an integral role in molding Rocket
32:47into a fully fleshed-out character.
32:49Or, we guess, a furred-out character in this case.
32:55It's real!
32:57Number 21.
32:58Vincent Price as Professor Rattigan,
33:00the great mouse detective.
33:02Ooh, I love it when I'm nice.
33:04One of Disney's most criminally underrated films
33:07features a villain who is voiced
33:08by one of the horror genre's greats.
33:10The great mouse detective was released during a lull
33:13in Disney's animated feature films.
33:15And its relative success was one of the factors
33:18which reinvigorated the studio.
33:20We are about to embark on the most odious,
33:23the most evil,
33:24the most diabolical scheme of my illustrious career.
33:28In this Sherlock Holmes-themed tale,
33:30Vincent Price plays the role of Professor Rattigan.
33:33The Moriarty-esque foil to Basil.
33:35This legendary actor gives a performance
33:37that won't soon be forgotten,
33:39and just his voice can send a shiver down your spine.
33:42Trouble with the chemistry set, old boy.
33:47Rattigan, no one can have a higher opinion of you than I have.
33:52And I think you're a slimy, contemptible sewer rat.
33:56Number 20, Chris Pratt as Emmett Borkowski, The Lego Movie.
34:00With all the special people in your life.
34:04Emmett may seem like a run-of-the-mill construction worker
34:06on the surface.
34:08Thanks to Chris Pratt's endearing performance, though,
34:10he's truly one of a kind.
34:12He's just as blind as a guy whose eyes don't work.
34:18An ordinary minifigure with a very special destiny,
34:21Emmett emerges as both a goofball
34:23and an unlikely action hero.
34:25Pratt flawlessly expresses all of Emmett's passion,
34:28creativity, and enthusiasm.
34:30Wait, where are we?
34:35This is so weird!
34:37You're not the special!
34:38You lied to me!
34:39Well, I mean...
34:40Even when he's performing the most routine tasks,
34:43Emmett sounds like he's on top of the world.
34:45Zap, zap, zap, pow, zap, pow.
34:46What are they looking at?
34:47I, I, I made a mistake.
34:49You should just be still.
34:50Act like a stool.
34:51Wait!
34:51Howdy, guys!
34:52Nope, stools don't talk.
34:53Come sit on me!
34:53Stools don't talk.
34:54Okay, shh.
34:55Pratt also brings humanity to the character,
34:58molding this yellow brick into an encouraging role model
35:00we care about.
35:02Equally silly and sincere,
35:04no actor in Hollywood could likely capture Emmett's essence
35:07quite like Pratt.
35:08Look, I, uh, I watch a lot of cop shows on TV,
35:11and isn't there supposed to be a good cop in that scenario also?
35:14Number 19, Johnny Depp as Rango, Rango.
35:18It's certainly nothing I've ever done before,
35:20any of the others have ever done before.
35:22Help!
35:24Johnny Depp is one of those performers
35:25that can slip into any role like a chameleon.
35:28Likewise, Rango is an actual chameleon
35:31that can blend into his environment like a Hollywood actor.
35:34Having spent most of his life behind glass,
35:37this lizard faces an identity crisis
35:39when he becomes stranded in the desert.
35:41Look, I need water, hydration, my teeth are chapped.
35:44I need lotion.
35:45I'm down to one layer of skin already.
35:47Pretty soon I'm gonna start seeing my insides.
35:49The timid Rango is able to survive
35:50by taking on the persona of a Western hero,
35:53although this inevitably lands him in hot water.
35:55You might say I'm what hell's already raised up.
36:00Names.
36:02Rango.
36:03Rango is constantly shifting between being courageous,
36:06cowardly, confident, and in over his head.
36:09But Depp's performance is perfectly balanced.
36:12Believe in that there sign.
36:14He completely loses himself in this role,
36:16making us forget about the actor behind the character.
36:19As long as that sign says Sheriff,
36:21you can believe that there's law and order in this town.
36:24But without law and order, ruminate on that.
36:28Number 18.
36:29James Woods as Hades.
36:31Hercules.
36:32Memo to me, maim you after my meeting.
36:34You can't mention Hercules without giving a shout-out
36:37to the legendary Danny DeVito and his performance as Phil.
36:41Perseus.
36:42Theseus.
36:43A lot of yeses.
36:44And every single one of those bums let me down.
36:47But James Woods' Hades is somehow even more memorable.
36:50This Academy Award nominee is known for playing villains,
36:53so his role in this Disney film of mythological proportions
36:56is definitely fitting.
36:58I've got 24 hours to get rid of this bozo.
37:02Well, the entire scheme I've been setting up for 18 years
37:06goes up in smoke,
37:08and you are wearing his merchandise!
37:13James Woods plays the primary antagonist in 1997's Hercules,
37:18the king of the underworld Hades.
37:20In traditional Greek mythology,
37:22Hades isn't necessarily a bad guy,
37:24but in this rendition, he is our hero's main adversary.
37:28Okay, say the next 24 hours.
37:30Okay, here is free as a bird and safe from harm.
37:32We dance, we kiss, we schmooze, we carry on,
37:34we go home happy.
37:34What do you say? Come on.
37:35Woods has said that he had such a good time acting
37:38as the voice of Hades
37:39that he'd take up the role again any time.
37:42He went on to voice the character in an animated series
37:44as well as several video games.
37:46Okay, so you made one lousy mistake.
37:49You exist.
37:50But hey, I'm a forgiving guy.
37:58At this point, we know not to be surprised
38:00by a transformative vocal performance from Alan Tudyk.
38:04Heck, he voiced a chicken in Moana.
38:06A chicken.
38:15But back in 2012,
38:16we were blown away by his villainous turn in Wreck-It Ralph.
38:20And that's saying something considering the stacked cast.
38:23You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would you?
38:26You hit a guy with glasses.
38:28That's well played.
38:30As King Candy,
38:31Tudyk presents a foppish and almost comedic antagonist
38:34in the vein of comedian Ed Wynn.
38:36As Turbo, however,
38:37King Candy's secret identity,
38:39Tudyk goes full dastardly,
38:42making us suddenly fear what was originally,
38:44at its core, a silly character.
38:46Become the view, Ralph.
38:48I'm now the most powerful virus in the arcade.
38:52I can take over any game I want.
38:55I should thank you.
38:57But it'd be more fun to kill you.
38:59It's no wonder that Tudyk won an Annie Award
39:01for voice acting in the film.
39:03Number 16.
39:04George Clooney as Mr. F.F. Foxy Fox.
39:08Fantastic Mr. Fox.
39:09Because I'm a wild animal.
39:11He's the man synonymous with the phrase movie star.
39:13So we had to constantly remind ourselves
39:15that he's the one playing the lead in this stop-motion flick.
39:18Kind of the greatest,
39:19the quote-unquote fantastic Mr. Fox.
39:21Described as a natural choice by Wes Anderson,
39:24Clooney's charm adds a certain gentlemanly quality
39:27to the already-fantastic titular Fox.
39:30Holy spirit, no!
39:35Unlike other animated films,
39:38the voices were recorded on location in an old farmhouse
39:41to get the most natural performances
39:43and as an attempt to replicate the movie's mood.
39:46You really are kind of a quote-unquote fantastic fox.
39:50I try.
39:51As a result,
39:52the comedy boasts the suave nature of Clooney's character,
39:55recounting the group's bizarre heist capers.
39:58It's almost like the remake of Ocean's Eleven.
40:00Hey, wait a minute.
40:02When was the last time you were in Vegas?
40:04Number 15.
40:05Amy Poehler as Joy.
40:07Inside Out.
40:08So hold on, guys.
40:08It's broccoli!
40:10Yes!
40:11Although Mindy Kaling as Disgust
40:13is certainly an inspired casting choice,
40:16Amy Poehler's portrayal of Joy is simply irresistible.
40:19The very definition of happiness,
40:20Joy attempts to put a smile on young Riley's face
40:23when life gets her down.
40:24Being a basic human emotion,
40:26Joy easily could have been a one-note character.
40:28All right, everyone.
40:29Fresh start.
40:30We're gonna have a good day,
40:31which will turn into a good week,
40:32which will turn into a good year,
40:33which turns into a good life.
40:35Poehler's performance brings a surprising amount
40:37of complexity to the role, however.
40:39Although Joy constantly tries to think positive,
40:42she eventually comes to understand
40:43the importance of sadness.
40:45Joy, you gotta fix this.
40:46Get up there.
40:47Sadness, it's up to you.
40:48Me?
40:49Sadness?
40:50Sadness?
40:50I can't, Joy.
40:52Yes, you can.
40:53Riley needs you.
40:55With just her voice,
40:56Poehler is able to light up the screen
40:58while also making the audience bawl their eyes out,
41:00taking us on an emotional journey unlike any other.
41:04I'll try.
41:05Bing bong.
41:08I promise.
41:11Number 14.
41:13Idina Menzel as Elsa,
41:14The Frozen Franchise
41:16You belong down in Arendelle.
41:18So do you.
41:19No, Anna, I belong here.
41:22Alone.
41:23Where I can be who I am
41:26without hurting anybody.
41:28In modern Disney animated movies,
41:30the voice casts are often packed
41:32with well-known actors, musicians,
41:34and celebrities.
41:35In Frozen,
41:36the cast is predictably star-studded,
41:38with actors like Kristen Bell,
41:40Jonathan Groff,
41:41and Josh Gad in prominent roles.
41:43Bell's relatable and quirky portrayal of Anna
41:46is definitely one for the books.
41:48The most vital player, however,
41:50is Idina Menzel,
41:51who was a Broadway darling
41:52before being cast as Elsa,
41:54but arguably became a household name
41:56due to the role.
41:57Her powerhouse voice
41:58is what makes the performance ring true,
42:00and it's hard to imagine anyone else
42:02giving it quite the same gravitas.
42:04Let the storm rage on!
42:10The cold never bothered me anyway.
42:13Number 13.
42:14Dwayne The Rock Johnson as Maui.
42:16Moana.
42:17The gods have given me a man!
42:20When you need somebody to voice a demigod,
42:22you can't do better than a superstar
42:24of Mr. Johnson's caliber.
42:27Maui always has time for his fans.
42:29The Rock is already a very animated person,
42:32especially in the eyebrows.
42:33His natural charisma translated
42:35flawlessly to animation.
42:37Men and women.
42:38Both.
42:39All.
42:39Not a guy-girl thing.
42:41You know, Maui is a hero to all.
42:43You're doing great.
42:44Although Johnson was tailor-made for Maui,
42:47the retired wrestler-turned-actor
42:48didn't come from a singing background.
42:50Regardless, he was excited to take part
42:52in Disney's tradition of classic musical numbers.
42:54Open your eyes, let's begin.
42:58Yes, it's really me, it's Maui.
43:00Breathe it in.
43:00The Rock spent months practicing You're Welcome,
43:03and his dedication shines through in the final product.
43:06Well, anyway, let me say you're welcome
43:09You're welcome
43:10For the wonderful world you know
43:12Through the song and his overall performance,
43:15Johnson finds just the right balance
43:16of being egotistical yet lovable.
43:18What's that for?
43:20That's a man's discovery of nanya.
43:23What's nanya?
43:25Nanya business.
43:26He shapeshifts Maui into a hero we want to follow,
43:29even though he may throw you in the water along the way.
43:32Number 12.
43:33Scarlett Johansson as Samantha
43:35Her
43:35Another live-action movie
43:37with a surprisingly stupendous voice-only performance,
43:41Her is a one-of-a-kind speculative romance movie
43:43that really makes us ponder the limits of humanity and love.
43:46Playing an artificial intelligence named Samantha,
43:50Scarlett Johansson makes us truly believe
43:52a machine creation could possess such profound emotion.
43:55She so effortlessly connects to Joaquin Phoenix's Theodore,
43:59even though they're never actually in the same room.
44:02But the heart's not like a box that gets filled up.
44:05It expands in size the more you love.
44:09I'm different from you.
44:11This doesn't make me love you any less.
44:14It actually makes me love you more.
44:15Funnily enough,
44:16the role was recast in post-production to Johansson,
44:20having originally been voiced by Samantha Morton.
44:23As powerful an actor as she is in her own right,
44:25we can't imagine hearing anyone else singing along
44:28as we play the ukulele.
44:42Number 11, Billy Crystal as Michael Mike Wazowski,
44:46the Monsters, Inc. franchise.
44:49Upon first look, Billy Crystal seems out of place
44:52as the one-liner spouting, one-eyed monster.
44:55Scary feet, scary feet, scary feet.
44:56But upon closer inspection,
44:58his performance actually brings a much-needed balance
45:01to John Goodman's kind yet deep voice as Sully.
45:04Hear me out!
45:05Look, you and I are a team.
45:07Nothing is more important.
45:08The energy and excitement the actor brings
45:10is not just what makes him good, though.
45:12When leading the 2013 prequel,
45:14Crystal digs out a lighter and softer tone
45:17for his more sympathetic moments.
45:18I knew I was scary.
45:20I didn't know I was that scary.
45:23In whichever circumstance Mike Wazowski finds himself,
45:26Crystal adapts to put forward that best possible chemistry.
45:30The team of Wazowski and Sullivan
45:31are gonna change the world starting today!
45:33Number 10, Mike Myers as Shrek, the Shrek franchise.
45:37Why are you following me?
45:40While his previous characters were eccentric yet one-dimensional,
45:43Shrek has a package of vicious loneliness and sarcasm,
45:46yet also a kinder soul, all effectively demonstrated
45:49through the actor's voice.
45:50Of course!
45:52Really?
45:52No.
45:53Not to say that his performance isn't helped
45:55by Eddie Murphy as the dim-witted donkey,
45:57as the pairing's mishaps are only complimented
46:00by their bond as talented voice actors.
46:02Why don't you go celebrate your freedom
46:04with your own friends?
46:06Hmm?
46:07But, uh, I don't have any friends.
46:10Shrek is not only one of the best voice performances
46:13by a celebrity,
46:14but also one that enhances Mike Myers' career
46:17rather than simply being a side gig.
46:19Now, where were we?
46:22Number 9, Jack Black as Po Ping, the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
46:26I'm gonna do something I never thought I'd be able to do.
46:30I'm going to teach Kung Fu.
46:32Jack Black is still one of the most energetic
46:35and physical comedic presences around.
46:37Whoa!
46:38The Furious Five.
46:39You're so much bigger than your action figures.
46:42Except for you, Mantis.
46:43You're about the same.
46:44Black was tailor-made to voice Poe,
46:46a chubby panda who lives and breathes Kung Fu.
46:49Almost everybody doubts Poe
46:51when he's singled out as the Dragon Warrior.
46:53So, so, so what?
46:54What?
46:55I don't know Chi!
46:56I don't know Chi!
46:57I don't know if I'm even the Dragon Warrior!
46:59I don't even know if I'm a panda!
47:01I don't know who I am!
47:02Regardless, Poe steps up to the challenge
47:04with an appetite to learn.
47:05Poe's eagerness wonderfully complements
47:07the stern, authoritative Master Shifu,
47:10who's voiced by Dustin Hoffman in a strong performance.
47:13Poe, the day you were chosen as Dragon Warrior
47:16was the worst day of my life.
47:19By far, nothing else came close.
47:22Black makes the audience root for Poe
47:24every step of the way,
47:25evening out the character's gullibility,
47:27clumsiness and insecurity with wit,
47:29determination and confidence.
47:31And now, free the fine!
47:34Disc of destruction!
47:39Number 8.
47:40Steve Carell as Felonius Gru,
47:42the Despicable Me franchise.
47:44How much you like to laugh!
47:48What better choice is there to play
47:50a gruff and foolish jelly manufacturer
47:52slash supervillain?
47:54My heart is a tooth,
47:56and it's got a cavity
47:58that can only be filled with children.
48:01I'm sorry!
48:03Steve Carell's Russian-like accent is dead on,
48:06and presents a mad cartoon doctor perfectly
48:08in these 3D computer animated comedies.
48:11We are going to steal!
48:14Pause for a fact.
48:17To the moon!
48:20And what?
48:21His performance channels
48:22the great Mel Blanc
48:23in Gru's outlandish reactions
48:25to his failures and comeuppances,
48:27but also provides a softer quality
48:29for his more sympathetic moments.
48:31You gave us back!
48:33I know!
48:33I know!
48:34And it is the worst mistake I ever made!
48:37Weaving in and out of his tones,
48:39Carell never loses the cartoon taste
48:41of his performance,
48:42and that can only be a great thing.
48:44Will you read us a bedtime story?
48:50No.
48:51Number 7.
48:53Jeremy Irons as Scar,
48:54The Lion King.
48:55Oh dear, I've said too much.
48:58Well, I suppose you'd have found out
49:00sooner or later.
49:01This Britain-born actor
49:03presents a brilliant gravitas
49:04to the greedy brother of Mufasa
49:06in this musical epic.
49:08Kill him.
49:11The foppish villain of the animal kingdom
49:14has a voice talent more in common
49:15with a Shakespeare tale
49:17than a Disney film.
49:18Much like the story itself, actually.
49:20Murderer!
49:22No, Simba, please.
49:23Tell them the truth.
49:24But it's the quarrels
49:25between Jeremy Irons
49:27and his on-screen brother
49:28James Earl Jones
49:29that propel our ears to bliss,
49:31both presenting a strong clash
49:33of bellowing and snarly voices.
49:35Brother!
49:36Help me!
49:38We love Jeremy Irons
49:39particularly for the way
49:41his voice almost dances
49:42through his plotting nature,
49:43especially when he informs
49:45dear Simba
49:46of his most famous surprise.
49:48Here's my little secret.
49:52I killed Mufasa.
49:56Number 6.
49:58Ellen DeGeneres as Dory
49:59The Finding Nemo franchise.
50:01Hi, I'm Dory.
50:03Speaking of chemistry,
50:04how do you make an uptight clownfish
50:06and a mind-numbing fool
50:07work this well together?
50:09Can I help you?
50:10Something's wrong with you.
50:12Really.
50:12Ellen DeGeneres uses
50:14a playful innocence
50:15to combat the harsher tones
50:16of Albert Brooks'
50:18Marlon the Clownfish
50:19in the first flick
50:20of this Pixar film series.
50:22When life gets you down,
50:23you know what you gotta do?
50:24I don't wanna know
50:24what you gotta do.
50:25Just keep swimming,
50:26just keep swimming,
50:27just keep swimming,
50:29swimming, swimming.
50:30What do we do?
50:31We swim, swim.
50:32Her lighter optimism
50:33is so unique
50:34to the tone of the film
50:35that when thinking
50:36of DeGeneres' big screen work,
50:38she's practically synonymous
50:39with her character of Dory,
50:41which led to a fantastic sequel.
50:43I'm sorry,
50:44but I really, really,
50:45really think we should swim through.
50:46And I'm really, really
50:47done talking about this.
50:48Over we go.
50:48Come on, trust me on this.
50:50Number five,
50:51Eddie Murphy as Donkey,
50:52the Shrek franchise.
50:54The franchise may be called Shrek,
50:56but we all know
50:57it was his noble steed
50:58who stole the show,
50:59especially in the first movie.
51:00That was really scary.
51:02And if you don't mind me saying,
51:03if that don't work,
51:04your breath certainly
51:05will get the job done,
51:05because you definitely
51:06need some Tic Tacs or something.
51:08Eddie Murphy had already
51:09voiced a few animated characters,
51:11like the unforgettable
51:12Mushu from Mulan.
51:13You're gonna have to trust me.
51:15And don't you slap me no more.
51:17We clear on that?
51:17But Donkey benefited the most
51:19from his rapid-fire delivery
51:21and uncontainable energy.
51:23Bringing his comedic
51:24A-game to the table,
51:25almost everything that comes
51:26out of Donkey's mouth
51:27is a laugh riot.
51:28That is one dazzling smile
51:30you got there.
51:30And do I detect a hint
51:31of minty freshness?
51:33That is,
51:33except for the occasional
51:34heartfelt moment,
51:35which Murphy also brings
51:36a gentle sincerity to.
51:38When we met,
51:40I didn't think he was just
51:41a big, stupid, ugly ogre.
51:42Although the performance
51:43didn't garner him
51:44an Oscar nomination,
51:45Murphy did become
51:46the first actor
51:47to score a BAFTA nomination
51:48for voice acting.
51:50Murphy also deservingly
51:51won the Annie Award
51:52for Best Male Performance
51:54in an Animated Feature.
51:55Ogres are like onions.
51:58They stink?
51:59Yes.
51:59No.
52:00Oh, they make you cry?
52:01No.
52:01Oh, you leave them out in the sun,
52:03they get all brown,
52:03start sprouting little white hairs.
52:05Number four,
52:06James Earl Jones
52:07as Mufasa,
52:08the Lion King.
52:09Although Jones
52:10had one of the most
52:11distinctive voices
52:12in the world,
52:13it never feels like
52:14we're listening
52:15to a celebrity.
52:16One day, Simba,
52:18the sun will set
52:18on my time here
52:20and will rise
52:21with you
52:22as the new king.
52:23Jones became Mufasa.
52:25Take Nala home.
52:26I've got to teach
52:28my son a lesson.
52:29The character
52:30is best remembered
52:31for his commanding nature,
52:33but Jones added
52:34dimensions
52:35to the big cat.
52:36Being brave
52:38doesn't mean
52:38you go looking
52:39for trouble.
52:40But you're not
52:41scared of anything.
52:43I was today.
52:44He captured Mufasa's
52:46playfulness
52:46while bonding
52:47with Simba.
52:48The cheetahs are hard up,
52:49but I always
52:49stay low to the ground.
52:51The fear in the pit
52:52of his stomach
52:52when Scar betrays him.
52:55And his stern
52:57yet affectionate
52:58side when it's
52:58time to teach
52:59a lesson.
53:00Cause nobody
53:01messes with your dad.
53:03Come here, you.
53:04Oh no, no.
53:05Ah!
53:06Number three,
53:08Tom Hanks
53:08as Woody,
53:09the Toy Story franchise.
53:11Usually when an actor
53:12voices as an animated
53:13character for multiple movies,
53:15it can start to sound
53:16like they're only interested
53:17in the steady paycheck
53:18after a while.
53:19What does a space
53:20ranger actually do?
53:22He's not a space
53:23ranger.
53:24He doesn't fight evil
53:25or shoot lasers
53:27or fly.
53:28This has never been
53:29the case with Tom Hanks'
53:30Woody.
53:31You are a toy!
53:34You weren't the real
53:35Buzz Lightyear!
53:36You're an action figure!
53:38In each Toy Story film,
53:40Hanks gave Woody
53:41another layer of depth.
53:42Like Buzz,
53:43identity is the key theme
53:44at the center
53:45of Woody's arc.
53:46Over in that house
53:47is a kid who thinks
53:48you are the greatest
53:49and it's not because
53:50you're a space ranger, pal.
53:51It's because you're
53:52a toy!
53:53When we first meet
53:54the sheriff,
53:55he views himself
53:55as Andy's favorite toy
53:57and the leader
53:57of his fellow playthings.
53:59Help us!
54:00The barn's on fire!
54:01I've got your critters.
54:02No need to worry.
54:03Woody saves the day again!
54:06Yee-haw!
54:07We see Woody
54:08gradually transition
54:09out of these roles
54:10throughout the series
54:11and Hanks makes
54:11that evolution
54:12feel 100% genuine.
54:14Andy's mom
54:15thought you were trash!
54:16Yeah,
54:16after he put us
54:17into the trash bag
54:18and called us junk!
54:20Yeah, I know.
54:21It looks bad.
54:21But guys,
54:22you gotta believe me!
54:23Thanks to his versatility
54:25as a comedic
54:25and dramatic actor,
54:26Hanks fashioned Woody
54:27into one of cinema's
54:28most complex
54:29animated protagonists.
54:31Number 2.
54:32Eartha Kitt
54:33as Yzma
54:33The Emperor's New Groove
54:35Much like Atlantis,
54:37The Emperor's New Groove
54:39is an early 2000s movie
54:40that didn't get
54:41the love it initially deserved,
54:43but has since drawn
54:44a cult following
54:45thanks to the excellent
54:46voice cast.
54:47Just think of it as
54:48you're being let go,
54:50that your life's going
54:51in a different direction,
54:52that your body's part
54:54of a permanent outplacement.
54:56Hey,
54:56that's kind of like
54:57what he said to you
54:58when you got fired.
54:59I know.
55:00It's called a cruel irony.
55:02Though we could be here
55:03all day talking about
55:04Patrick Warburton's
55:05crunk
55:06or David Spade's
55:07Kuzco,
55:08it's Eartha Kitt
55:08who truly steals the show.
55:10It is no concern of mine
55:12whether your family has...
55:13What was it again?
55:15Um,
55:15food?
55:16Ha!
55:17You really should have
55:18thought of that
55:18before you became peasants.
55:20Though Yzma is story-wise
55:22a truly despicable villain,
55:23we can't help but love
55:25her all the same
55:26thanks to Kitt's
55:27zany line delivery
55:28and energy.
55:29You can practically hear
55:30her chewing the dialogue
55:31in the recording booth,
55:33making sure we're having
55:34as much fun as she is.
55:35I'll turn him into a flea,
55:38a harmless little flea,
55:39and then I'll put that
55:41flea in a box,
55:41and then I'll put that
55:42box inside of another box,
55:43and then I'll nail that
55:44box to myself,
55:45and when it arrives,
55:47I'll smash it with her!
55:50Though we've gotten plenty
55:51of superb vocal performances
55:52this century so far,
55:54we irrefutably got
55:55one of the best early on.

56:13Number 1.
56:14Robin Williams
56:15as the Genie
56:16Aladdin
56:22Alibaba had 40 thieves
56:24and Scheherazade
56:24had 1,000 tails,
56:26but there will only
56:27ever be one
56:28Robin Williams.
56:29Aladdin!
56:30Hello, Aladdin.
56:31Nice to have you on the show.
56:32Can we call you Al?
56:33Or maybe just Din.
56:34How about Ladi?
56:35In Mrs. Doubtfire,
56:36the comedian states
56:37that he does voices,
56:39and he's correct.
56:39I do voices.
56:42What do you mean
56:43you do voices?
