00:16Sì, sono Paolo Nerath.
00:18Ho creato Looking Glass, che era un studio indie.
00:22Il primo game che abbiamo creato era Ultima Underworld,
00:26a ground-breaking fantasy role-playing game.
00:29It came out in 1992.
00:31And while most of the games in role-playing,
00:35like Ultima's, were made in top-down tile-view graphics,
00:38it was Paul Nerath and his team that sat down and said,
00:41we can make a virtual world
00:43where the computer is not only the game master,
00:46but where it is visualized in beautiful three-dimensional graphics.
00:49We can create a user interface that is more natural
00:53with a mouse than it was with a lot of those other games
00:56that were with purely keyboard.
00:58And Underworld was boring.
01:00At Looking Glass, we went on to explore the genre
01:04in some different ways.
01:06System Shock, which was a science fiction take
01:09using many of the same approaches.
01:12Later, Thief, which was using Stealth,
01:15a take on that same sort of approach.
01:17We also influenced other game designers
01:20who were creating games like Deus Ex,
01:24Bioshock, Skyrim.
01:26So we really created this whole new genre
01:29of immersive gameplay
01:30combined with this emergent improvisational element
01:35that empowered the player to, you know,
01:38create their own story with this interactive media.
01:41Underworld's approach to game systems and simulation
01:43is central to our philosophy of keeping things in the player's hands,
01:48giving up authorship for ourselves and giving it to you.
01:51The other reason I'm excited about working with OtherSide
01:53on this new Underworld
01:54is for the opportunity to take this kind of game forward into the future.
01:59As in the original Underworlds,
02:00you're going to be the avatar, human from this world
02:03magically transported to the fantasy realm of Underworld.
02:08All the game's going to take place underground.
02:10We want that real pure sense of immersion
02:12in this deep and dark labyrinth space.
02:15Also from the original Underworlds,
02:17we're going to take forward the concept of factions.
02:21The Dark Elves, the Dwarves, and the Shamblers.
02:26And these three factions,
02:27they all vie for control of the Underworld
02:29and there's tension between them.
02:31And by the time the player comes in,
02:33they're almost at outright war.
02:35You can resolve in different ways
02:36depending on player choice.
02:38And so there's a whole dynamic between the factions
02:41that the players can use
02:43and really create a living, breathing environment
02:46and ecology that respond to what the player does.
02:49We're going to give you a character creation system
02:51that you can improvise with
02:53as much as with any of our other systems in the game.
02:56And you can combine elements
02:57to craft your own approach
02:58to building your persona in the game
03:00that reflects the way that you want to solve problems.
03:04Yes, we want to extend the kinds of things
03:07that we do with physics simulation
03:08and AI and other simulated systems.
03:11We're also looking at other opportunities
03:13that were cut short
03:14when Looking Glass closed its doors.
03:16So why bring Underworld back now?
03:18It so happens that Underworld and Underworld 2,
03:21the publisher put them in the deepest vault
03:24and they were gone for a generation.
03:26But only now we're able to find a way
03:28to bring it back out as an indie studio, as OtherSide.
03:32Crowdfunding gives us the opportunity
03:34to bring this kind of game back.
03:36We can take creative risks
03:37that the big publishers wouldn't be comfortable doing.
03:40Move the state of the craft forward.
03:43We're not afraid to experiment.
03:44We did it Looking Glass,
03:46we're going to do it again at OtherSide.
03:47If you're as excited as we are
03:49about some of these ideas,
03:50we're going to need your help to realize them.
03:53Each week going forward during the Kickstarter,
03:55we're going to reveal some new aspect
03:57where we're innovating, where we're pushing forward.
04:00And we'd like to invite you to join us on this journey
04:03to try to reinvent, yet again,
04:05the fantasy role-playing genre.
04:07With your help, we'll make this happen.
04:09We don't know exactly how it's going to come out,
04:11but it's going to be a blast.
