00:09One of the things people have been talking about a lot since you showed the game
00:13is the voice protagonist in the game
00:16Where did you come to that decision to use that?
00:18We wanted to tell this big epic story
00:20and do that in a way that let the player sort of relay emotion
00:27and have these emotional moments
00:29and we realized if you play Fallout 3
00:34Liam Neeson is the voice of your dad
00:37and there are some good emotional beats there
00:39but there's only so much you can do when you're just clicking on a line of dialogue
00:44and there's no spoken response
00:46so the emotional depth that we got by having the voice protagonist
00:50was actually way more intense than I even expected
00:56like the advantages of it
00:58Yeah, some of that was logistical
00:59We didn't want it to hold back what we would usually do
01:03with all of the choice we want
01:07so they have spent years on it
01:09each of them have recorded over 13,000 lines
01:13and also we found
01:16we found two great voice actors
01:18for the male and the female players
01:20Yeah, well Todd, can you believe it?
01:23We actually have them here
01:24I can believe it
01:25Yeah, so we'd like to welcome to the stage
01:27voice actors Brian T. Delaney
01:30Courtney Taylor
01:32and voice director Kal-El Bogdanovic
01:36How'd I do?
01:38Not well
01:38So welcome guys
01:39It's pretty exciting to have you guys
01:41and I guess Courtney wasn't able to make it
01:43Yeah, she's lost somewhere in the electronic miasma
01:47Yeah
01:48Try and get her here
01:49Okay, so how did you guys get started on the project?
01:52I remember I looked it up
01:54July 9th, 2013 was my first day of work
01:58and I remember
01:59I knew this was going to be a big deal
02:03but I didn't know the game title
02:05I only knew the code name
02:06So we show up
02:07and I do the first line
02:08which happens to be
02:09War, War Never Changes
02:10and I say
02:12Cal, can you tell me what the name of the game is?
02:15And he says
02:15Well, yeah, you know
02:17It's, you know, the line
02:19Right, the line, of course
02:21Stupid, yeah, I know
02:22I didn't
02:23So when he told me
02:25and the scope of the game
02:26and what they were doing
02:27and what Todd and the team were doing
02:29it kind of blew me away
02:30even more so than when I first found out
02:32I booked the job
02:33so it's pretty cool
02:34Cool
02:34What are some unique characteristics
02:37of working on a project this massive
02:40compared to other things you've worked on?
02:42The number one difference
02:45between this and the many other games
02:47that I've worked on
02:48is the amount of time and care
02:51that has gone into the writing
02:54and then the recording of this material
02:57I don't know how much you guys know about this
02:59but in a lot of other games
03:00Triple A games
03:02they'll wait till like the last month or two
03:04to record everything for the game
03:06and it's a huge rush
03:08and sometimes you're doing like
03:09a hundred lines an hour
03:10and it's nuts
03:12to have had the artistic luxury
03:17of being able to work on this
03:19with these two
03:19unfortunately Courtney's not here
03:21these two incredibly talented actors
03:23for as long as we have
03:25almost three years
03:26definitely three by the time
03:28it launches
03:29is just
03:31it shows
03:32an attention to detail
03:34and
03:35a respect for the material
03:37and for the audience
03:38that you just don't see elsewhere
03:39it's really extraordinary
03:41yeah
03:41and for you guys
03:42what's it been like
03:43working with them
03:44awesome
03:45you know it's
03:46again that goes back to
03:47if we're going to really do this
03:48the way we want
03:49we need to logistically figure out
03:51how we can record voice
03:53for four years
03:56and so
03:57you know
03:58Cal came in early
03:59we did some
03:59we also
04:00there's some performance capture
04:01we do in the game
04:02so there's that
04:03that part of it as well
04:04and
04:05we were anxious
04:06you know
04:07about having a voice
04:08because like it changes
04:09like how do I feel
04:10about my character
04:11and we heard
04:12Brian and Courtney
04:13and we obviously
04:14we auditioned
04:16a ton of people
04:17I don't know
04:17if you know how many
04:18oh yeah
04:19it was
04:19oh yeah
04:20get down really
04:21oh yeah
04:21but you were number one
04:24and we'd have team voting
04:25so we would
04:26we would put up
04:27various pictures
04:27of different character faces
04:29and make everybody
04:30in the team
04:30you don't know
04:31everybody in the team
04:31listen to them
04:32and like okay
04:33because sometimes
04:34you get a good
04:35a good voice
04:36but he doesn't feel
04:37right to everybody
04:37and it was like a
04:39you know
04:40Courtney
04:41Courtney Taylor
04:43Courtney Taylor
04:46this was a late idea
04:48by the way
04:48everybody like
04:48oh you should come
04:49it'll be
04:49it'll be great
04:50but anyway
04:51finding them
04:52really made
04:53all the difference
04:54and it's weird
04:54actually today
04:55is the first day
04:55I actually met
04:56face to face
04:57I know
04:58and like
04:59I've been listening
04:59to his voice
05:01as the character
05:02and they both
05:03have really owned
05:04the characters
05:04for years
05:06and it got better
05:07and better
05:07and better
05:08I don't know
05:09Emil can speak to it
05:09too
05:09he does most of the writing
05:10you know
05:10you talk about
05:11so you know
05:12you can play the game
05:13as a female protagonist
05:14or a male protagonist
05:15and you
05:17so everything
05:18so either gender
05:20can do everything
05:21in the game
05:21right
05:22so
05:23it was really cool
05:25for me to see
05:26the differences
05:26in the lines
05:28and the things
05:30that Brian brought
05:31and the things
05:31that Courtney brought
05:32were sometimes
05:32completely different
05:33like I would write
05:34them a certain way
05:35or the designers
05:36would write these things
05:37a certain way
05:38and you would expect
05:40a certain performance
05:41and then they would
05:42deliver something
05:43way beyond
05:44what you even expected
05:45and so that
05:46and that actually
05:46happened very early
05:47and that
05:48you know
05:49I spoke earlier
05:49of trust
05:50it establishes trust
05:52with you know
05:52when you have
05:52this very emotional
05:53story
05:54and the trust
05:55you have to have
05:56that these
05:56you know
05:57these folks
05:58are going to
05:58knock it out
05:59of the park
06:01it just
06:03the recording sessions
06:04almost became
06:05conversational
06:06you know what I mean
06:07just like
06:07let's go in
06:07let's do it
06:08you know
06:08and the communication
06:09to be able to
06:10talk to these guys
06:11and Cal
06:11about
06:12that's not working
06:13can we try it
06:13this way
06:14yeah world of difference
06:15well we're actually
06:17running out of time here
06:18thanks everybody
06:19for showing
06:19Brian I have
06:20one request for you
06:22maybe you could give
06:23the whole audience
06:24a let's go pal
06:27let's go pal
06:29perfect
