From an ancient sound illusion to a symbol of unity, researchers have proposed dozens of theories for why the mysterious megaliths were erected at Stonehenge 5,000 years ago.
Transcript
00:00About 5,000 years ago, an ancient civilization raised a circle of huge, roughly rectangular
00:06stones in a field in what is now Wiltshire, England.
00:12That Neolithic monument would come to be called Stonehenge.
00:16It is arguably one of the most famous megalithic monuments in the world.
00:22It's also one of the most mysterious, with its prehistoric concentric rings garnering
00:27plenty of speculation as to why and how they were constructed.
00:32The main structure was built between 5,000 and 4,000 years ago.
00:37But the site continuously evolved over a period of about 10,000 years.
00:44The most impressive of stones are called sarsens, and they each stand up to 30 feet, that's
00:509 meters tall, and weigh a whopping 25 tons.
00:55The smaller stones are called bluestones for their bluish tinge when wet.
01:00Dozens of burial mounds have been discovered near Stonehenge, suggesting that perhaps thousands
01:05of people were buried there.
01:08As much as archaeologists have uncovered about Stonehenge, there are still plenty of mysteries
01:12to solve.
01:14Why did people construct Stonehenge in the first place?
01:17What was it used for?
01:18One theory suggests Stonehenge marks the unification of Britain, a point when people across the
01:25islands worked together and used a similar style of houses, pottery and other items.
01:32Another suggests Stonehenge may have originally been a cemetery for the elite.
01:38No matter why it was built, Stonehenge may have been constructed with the sun in mind.
01:44One avenue connecting the monument with the nearby River Avon aligns with the sun on the
01:50winter solstice.
01:52The site also faces the summer solstice sunrise.
01:55And, both summer and winter solstices are still celebrated there today.
02:02Archaeologists will continue to dig into the mysteries at Stonehenge.
