00:11Oh, hello there and welcome to your Tuesday One Show live on BBC One and I play it with
00:16Angelica Bell and Alex Jones. Happy St Patrick's Day to all those taking part in festivities
00:21today. And tonight we're also in a celebratory mood as we're joined by three favourites from
00:25the world of entertainment. Yes, comedian Judy Love and social media star GK Barry have teamed
00:31up for a brilliantly chaotic new game show called Celebrity Sabotage with the help of
00:36hidden cameras, famous faces and very fetching overalls. They will be telling us why they've
00:42been hard at work pranking unsuspecting contestants to bring us epic Saturday night telly. It's
00:48lots of fun that, isn't it? It's so good. And someone who knows all about that is a legendary
00:52entertainer whose career in showbiz has spanned over five decades. And now Les Dennis is returning
00:57to the stage in the heartwarming musical Waitress. He'll be revealing how he has damed Judy Dench
01:03to thank for his love of performing. Also coming up to shine a light on Endometriosis Awareness
01:08Month, Michelle Akely shares her powerful story of living with this debilitating condition that
01:14affects one in ten women in the UK as she finds out how the latest pioneering treatments can
01:19be life-changing for many. Plus, as millions of Muslims around the world prepare to celebrate
01:26Eid later this week, Race Across the World winner Iman Chowdhury reflects on his experience
01:30of observing the holy month of Ramadan whilst also training to run two marathons.
01:36So lots coming up tonight, but first with part of the UK expected to see the warmest day of
01:42the year so far this week. Very exciting. It feels like spring has sprung and we are starting
01:47with a film that might inspire you to get spring cleaning.
01:50Yes, one of the stars of the BBC series Sort Your Life Out, Ewan Carrington, is finding
01:55out how the cleaning industry is setting its sights on a new generation of talent.
02:02From filthy to flawless, online cleaning videos are oddly satisfying and wildly popular.
02:07But while millions watch them, the cleaning industry is still struggling to attract new workers.
02:13For Matthew though, on a cleaning operative apprenticeship at Manchester's Piccadilly Station, the job is
02:19a source of real pride.
02:21There's a lot of different aspects with cleaning that I wouldn't really know about until I was doing this
02:26apprenticeship. Like the chemicals, waste removal, cleaning up biohazards.
02:32Is there anything about your job you find particularly satisfying?
02:36The reactions of other people, they go, well thank you for making the train clean and stuff like that,
02:41that makes me happy within my job.
02:43Hello, you joined me in the bath today.
02:45I started cleaning in my local pub as a teenager, and like Matthew, that job gave me skills for life.
02:51So with youth unemployment rising, and with AI taking more kerical and finance falls, I'm wondering whether cleaning could be
03:00a
03:00profitable career path that others have overlooked.
03:04To find out where cleaning could lead, I caught up with Jay, who got his first job after leaving school
03:09with no formal qualifications.
03:11My first working day was cleaning toilets.
03:14Hands down as well as hands on.
03:15Hands down as well as hands on.
03:15So yeah, that was my first shift, was actually a hands-on cleaning operator.
03:20Within a year, Jay joined the firm's management trainee scheme. Two decades later, he's running the company.
03:26It's worth about £40 million a year revenue now.
03:29Wow.
03:29I've now worked on five different continents, nine different countries, I've done Olympic Games.
03:34I was there when Lando Norris won the Formula One last year, cleaning up after 160,000 fans.
03:40I could have never imagined that my career would be here.
03:43Jay's story might be exceptional, but progression in cleaning isn't.
03:47From frontline roles to tech, logistics and management, there's room to grow.
03:51Do you think it's an industry that kind of gets overlooked?
03:53100%. It's definitely looked at a bottom rung industry that you get a job in because you couldn't get a
03:59job in anywhere else.
04:00But the reality of that is so far from it.
04:02Whatever you want to do, chances are, in the cleaning industry, we can do it for you.
04:05Whether it be robotics, analytics, marketing, human resources, accounting, operations.
04:13The Department for Work and Pensions says it's working with the Cleaning and Support Services Association to open up new
04:19opportunities for job seekers.
04:21And as the cleaning industry has an ageing workforce, to attract young blood, it's taking its message into schools.
04:27Well, we're here today to talk about the cleaning industry. Any of you want a job in cleaning? No?
04:35Clean Start is a programme which promotes the sector as a long-term career and offers hands-on experience.
04:40When you think of a cleaner, what do you imagine? Mopping a bucket.
04:44Mopping bucket. Yeah, boring. Yeah. Okay.
04:47Is there anything particularly that's really surprised the kids you've been talking to?
04:51The cleaning industry is a global industry. And for some people, the opportunity to travel, the opportunity to work abroad,
04:57work for a major company there, and the job security is there, is a big draw.
05:01Cleaning doesn't mean getting a mopping bucket and cleaning the floors anyway. Did you all see the robot before? Yeah.
05:06So that does all that for you. You said you want to get engineering? Yeah.
05:09Well, we need engineers and mechanics and technicians to make machines like that.
05:14I'm working in the cleaning sector, but I don't actually do any cleaning. I work in marketing. We build websites,
05:18we do social media.
05:19I've been in this job 11 years now, and I absolutely love it.
05:23I'm keen to find out whether the pupils here have been convinced by what they've heard today.
05:28Clean It makes me think of a boring job and, like, kind of miserable. Yeah.
05:32But when I've heard their talk about it, I think it could be really good with all these different robots
05:39and everything like that.
05:40Could you see yourself potentially working in the cleaning industry one day?
05:42Mmm, maybe. Because, like, I like the marketing, but, like, the cleaning itself maybe not, because, like, it's not really
05:49my thing.
05:51Everybody has to clean.
05:53Could you see yourself doing a role in the cleaning industry potentially?
05:56Yeah, I could see myself doing it.
05:58Oh, nice. And what sort of roles do you think you would do?
06:00Probably more like the practical way, like the building the robots, you know, like maybe even designing them.
06:05Do you think cleaning could be cool?
06:07Yeah.
06:07Oh, great.
06:10With the government focused on tackling long-term youth unemployment and an industry with clear routes into skilled work,
06:17cleaning may not be the shining choice, but for some it could offer a sparkling start to a career.
06:24Great to see how many different opportunities are out there in the cleaning industry.
06:27Yes.
06:27And thanks you in for that.
06:28And, of course, Sort Your Life Out continues at 8 o'clock this evening here on BBC One.
06:31And if you're in Wales, you can watch it on iPad.
06:33I do love Sort Your Life Out.
06:35It's such a good show.
06:36Dick did.
06:36Yes.
06:37Now, we've got some great guests on the show tonight.
06:39Showbiz icon Les Dennis will be talking about his return to the stage,
06:43plus comedian Judy Love and social media star GK Barry will be telling us all about causing mischief for their
06:50new reality game show.
06:52But before we say hello to them all, let's take a look at Celebrity Sabotage,
06:55which sees famous faces team up to prank unsuspecting TV contestants who think they're taking part in a reality show,
07:02but it's actually completely made up.
07:04Look at this.
07:05Look at this.
07:06This is epic!
07:06The bookcase open.
07:08We're going to sabotage together.
07:09It's caused some chaos.
07:11Welcome to couple goals.
07:13Welcome to the applicants.
07:14Welcome to the backstabber.
07:16All right, let's go.
07:18Let's go.
07:18Let's go.
07:19Is everyone begging?
07:20Go!
07:20My winner!
07:22You've just bagged £3,000 for the contestants.
07:25Get down!
07:26Get down!
07:27Get down!
07:27Get down!
07:28Oh, it's very funny.
07:31Please welcome to the show stars of Celebrity Sabotage, Judy Love and GK Barry,
07:35and of course, much-loved entertainer, Les Dennis.
07:39Lovely to be here.
07:42So lovely to see you.
07:44Yeah.
07:44Let's dive straight in, then, to Celebrity Sabotage, because we saw it there.
07:48Honestly, we loved watching the first episode.
07:51So funny.
07:52So it's hidden cameras, like, pretend programmes.
07:55Chaos, basically.
07:56I'm glad you said the word chaos, but with a lot of laughter and a lot of fun.
08:00I mean, you're in this massive house.
08:03There's four of us.
08:03Myself, Joel, Sam and you.
08:05And then we're in this basement, which is the headquarters.
08:08And contestants are coming in truly thinking that they're playing a particular game.
08:12So, like, almost like an apprenticeship.
08:14Yeah.
08:15A relationship couple goals game.
08:16And, you know, another cooking show, which I was a host for.
08:20And so they're really passionate about it, which makes it even better that we're going
08:24to cause so much, like, you know, disruption, so that we can win them money in the end.
08:30But let me tell you something.
08:31This show is crazy, but it's exactly what you need on a Saturday night.
08:36Yeah.
08:36Yeah.
08:37It's a good show for the family to sit down.
08:39All ages.
08:40And just laugh.
08:40Yeah.
08:41So, let's talk about episode one, because we've got a fake show.
08:44It's called The Applicant, isn't that right?
08:46With Sarah Davies.
08:47Yes.
08:47And so, tell us about some of the pranks you have to pull off to win money for the contestants.
08:51So, my first challenge, like, first episode.
08:53I was new in.
08:55I had to throw fake bird poo on all of the contestants.
08:58Oh.
08:59But I didn't realise that the spoon is actually quite loosely gripped into my hand, so I nearly
09:05knocked a few contestants out because I threw the spoon as well.
09:08But we had loads of stuff, didn't we?
09:10We had the champagne tower that you had to knock over during a wedding shoot.
09:15Can we just say, I think you've got me on all fours.
09:17That's all I'm saying.
09:17And amen to that.
09:19Are you both pranksters in real life?
09:21Do you like pranking people?
09:23You know what?
09:23A little bit.
09:24I did prank my daughter once for her birthday and said to her, oh, you know, Stormzy, you're
09:29going to meet Stormzy.
09:30But, like, he's turning up at the surprise bite.
09:32And it wasn't so.
09:33I don't know if that's pranking or just evil.
09:35That's disappointing.
09:36That's not pranking.
09:37But I didn't make it up because one time I went out and Stormzy was there and, you know,
09:40him and his crew, they dropped me home.
09:41And I said to my daughter, come outside, I'm feeling a bit ill.
09:44When she came out, opened the door.
09:46Stormzy.
09:46Wow.
09:46What a day.
09:47Lucky girl.
09:48We're doing the same.
09:49We're pranking you, but then you're going to get money at the end.
09:52We make up for it.
09:52Yeah.
09:53So it's a beautiful thing.
09:54With fake bird poo.
09:55With fake bird poo.
09:56If you're surprised by that, when it's used to the other stuff.
10:00And Grace, there was one prank, though, that even fooled the production team, wasn't there?
10:05Yeah, well, during the baking type series, I had to swap the sugar for salt.
10:10And then, obviously, the catering company that was giving us all food didn't realise
10:14and they thought, oh, there's sugar there.
10:16They baked everyone a cake.
10:18All the crew that had been working for hours, it was the worst cake ever.
10:22So, technically, I did sabotage them as well.
10:24It was a long day to be on that shoot.
10:26It was great.
10:27It really was great.
10:28I'm not going to lie.
10:29You know, I did things in that show that I never thought I would do.
10:32No.
10:33It was such a bond.
10:34And production, they are insane.
10:37The fact that they're doing a whole show which is a sabotage, and then they've got all these
10:41other shows, I don't know how they did it, but they were fantastic.
10:44It's a lot.
10:45Yeah.
10:46Les, do you think they'd be a good prankster?
10:47I'd be a rubbish prankster, because I just, you know, if I go to prank somebody,
10:52I always go, I'm only joking.
10:54I give it away too quickly.
10:56I don't like to prank people.
10:58It feels bad.
10:58It feels bad.
10:59Yeah, it feels bad.
11:00Oh, but it's so funny.
11:02It starts to get a little bit high on the bad.
11:05Exactly.
11:06Yeah.
11:06Yeah.
11:06And Grace, you also got to meet a hero.
11:08Of yours on the show.
11:10Yeah, so obviously, Claire Baldin is the original lesbian.
11:12I was obsessed.
11:13I was like, you paved the way for us lesbians.
11:16Yeah.
11:17So I managed to also present on one of the days.
11:20They didn't realise I was part of it.
11:21So I fake present with her and I just spoke that woman's ear off about dogs.
11:26Has she kept in contact with you?
11:27No.
11:28Yeah.
11:31I don't know why.
11:32I'm sure one day she'll invite me to crafts.
11:34Yeah, but it must have just got lost in the post.
11:37Yeah.
11:38It's a shame.
11:38We loved Claire.
11:39I was watching GK.
11:40I was like, we might need security up in here.
11:44Claire can handle herself.
11:46Now, Les, obviously no stranger to Saturday night television.
11:50I mean, you are such an icon.
11:52Family Fortunes.
11:53We all loved it.
11:54Fifteen years I did.
11:55Well, you loved it, didn't you?
11:56I loved it, yeah.
11:56And we've got, actually, a question here from Dan.
11:59Okay.
11:59And he asks, what's...
12:01Oh, I love this.
12:02What's the best and worst answer you've heard on Family Fortunes?
12:06Difficult question.
12:07Well, we...
12:08I mean, that was the best part of it.
12:09The answers.
12:10The stupid answers that people gave, you know.
12:12And I would say, if it's up there, I'll give you the money myself.
12:14You know?
12:15And one time, I did have to give the money away.
12:18I had to...
12:19Because it was...
12:20The question was, name a way of toasting somebody.
12:25What would you say?
12:27Toasting somebody.
12:27Like, with a drink.
12:28With a drink, yeah.
12:29But this one...
12:30I was going to say, a toaster.
12:32I knew you!
12:34Do you want an application for the show?
12:36I thought...
12:38This woman said, over an open fire.
12:41Wow.
12:42And I went, if that's up there, I'll give you the money myself.
12:45And it was...
12:46It was...
12:46It was up there.
12:47There are people like us about.
12:49Somebody had said that, yeah.
12:50It's a lot about the audience, doesn't it?
12:53Yeah.
12:53I think probably my favourite one was when...
12:55I mean, it was bizarre.
12:56The question was, name something associated with Dracula.
12:59What would you think?
13:00Blood.
13:01Teeth, yeah.
13:03Cross, all that stuff.
13:05This bloke went bang!
13:06Bob Munkhouse!
13:09On the top of his head, Bob Munkhouse!
13:12Well, on that note, we will say,
13:14Celebrity Sabotage starts this Saturday,
13:168 o'clock on ITV1 and ITVX.
13:19So to come, Les will be telling us about bringing
13:21hit musical Waitress to theatres across the UK.
13:24But first, we have a powerful film for you
13:26as Michelle Ackley opens up about living with a container
13:29that hugely impacts women all over the world.
13:32To mark Endometriosis Awareness Month,
13:34she's been to meet others like her
13:36to share their experiences.
13:40Every month, excruciating agony.
13:43I was dismissed.
13:44I was told that it was all in my head.
13:47On top of all of that pain,
13:48I also was experiencing extreme fatigue and brain fog.
13:51Around 10% of women in the UK
13:53are affected by endometriosis, including me.
13:58It's a condition that never really got talked about,
14:01which resulted in me feeling incredibly isolated.
14:05Endometriosis can cause inflammation and damage,
14:09mainly in a woman's pelvic area.
14:11Jodie Riley has lived with it since she was 14.
14:14It feels like something's stabbing me from the inside out.
14:18I'm so focused on the pain.
14:21It just puts me off doing anything.
14:24You get told it's like part of being a woman,
14:27and it's like, this feels horrible.
14:30Yeah.
14:31It's mentally and physically exhausting.
14:33I remember having such intense stomach pains
14:37that I couldn't walk.
14:38I was crawling, thinking, is this normal?
14:42Did you ever get people saying things like,
14:46use a hot water bottle, it'll be fine?
14:47Way too many times.
14:48It makes me feel sad because I just want a normal life.
14:53It makes me feel sad listening to you, Jodie.
14:57On average, it takes women more than nine years to get a diagnosis,
15:01and for Jodie, it was ten.
15:04But now she's been referred to a specialist unit
15:06at the Royal Free Hospital in London
15:08for innovative robotic treatment.
15:11Mr. Fevzi Shakir is her consultant gynaecologist.
15:15Endometriosis is a condition where the cells,
15:19similar to those found in the lining of the womb,
15:22can be found in different parts of the body.
15:24When those cells flare up, that can cause inflammation,
15:29scarring, and lead onto many other symptoms.
15:31And if you have a delayed diagnosis, unfortunately,
15:35it can sometimes progress and can cause issues
15:38such as difficulty conceiving.
15:41It is hard to diagnose.
15:43Even scans can miss it completely.
15:45But Jodie's MRI clearly shows signs of endometriosis.
15:49On the left-hand side here, there is some scarring in that area.
15:53The next step for Jodie will be to perform
15:55a robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedure.
15:59I'm feeling nervous, my heart's in my throat,
16:03but I'm looking forward to being able to live pain-free.
16:08The robotic assistance during the procedure means greater precision,
16:12with reduced recovery times.
16:14Four metal tubes, or ports, are inserted into Jodie's abdomen.
16:19We then attach the robotic device onto the ports,
16:23and that gives us that control from this console.
16:26The camera gives Fevzi an incredible 3D view
16:30of the areas he needs to operate on,
16:32and the robotic assistance keeps it perfectly stable.
16:36It's a bit like a video game.
16:38We're actually driving a car.
16:39So you've got your controls,
16:41and that can also allow you to switch and manipulate the camera.
16:46An infrared view shows important areas to avoid,
16:50highlighted with green dye.
16:52By switching between the different tools,
16:55Fevzi's able to remove all the abnormal tissue.
16:58I mean, it was a challenging case.
17:00It was more widespread than we initially thought,
17:02but I feel that we've got the best outcome for Jodie,
17:06and I'm really hopeful that it will improve her quality of life.
17:10Hello! You look fantastic!
17:14Yeah, I'm feeling, like, a whole lot of a difference.
17:18I don't feel the sharp stabbing pain.
17:22Wow.
17:22I'm looking forward to being the new me.
17:26It's great to see how well Jodie's doing already.
17:30I had surgery ten years ago,
17:31which made a huge difference to my life.
17:34And, after continued treatment last year,
17:38I became a mum.
17:40Which was something I'd previously worried might never happen.
17:43Every woman's experience with endometriosis is different.
17:47But as we talk about it more,
17:49and the technology moves on...
17:51Hopefully, it'll lead to easier diagnosis and better treatment,
17:56so no-one has to suffer in silence.
18:00Oh, little Nala.
18:02Thanks so much to Michelle and Jodie for sharing their stories.
18:05And you can find more information on endometriosis
18:07and available treatments on our website.
18:10Do you want to bring you in?
18:11Because you've talked previously about having the condition.
18:14And how important it is to talk about it?
18:16I mean, it really is.
18:17Because I think, for women, you know,
18:18when you have got endometriosis,
18:20especially at the first stage where you're not even aware,
18:22but you know you feel different,
18:24you know the pain is extreme,
18:25it's usually just kind of brushed off.
18:27We're like, oh, it's a bad period.
18:28And you're getting to a stage where it's helpful for you to function,
18:31go to work, your daily routine.
18:33So I remember it took me some years to get diagnosed,
18:35and it was just...
18:37It was one of those moments where you wasn't even sure what it was about,
18:40so you didn't really want to talk to anybody about it.
18:42So having this kind of information and these new ways of treatment
18:45is so important, especially for young girls to come out
18:48and know that there is people trying to fight for them
18:50and find other ways for them to just feel more comfortable in their body.
18:54Yeah.
18:54It's crippling, see, isn't it?
18:55It really is.
18:56Yeah.
18:57Okay, still to come, Race Across the World winner,
19:00Iman Charity.
19:01We'll be talking about the physical challenges
19:02of training for a marathon during Ramadan.
19:04But time now to talk theatre,
19:07because Les here is returning to the stage
19:09in the heartwarming musical Waitress.
19:12Now, the story follows a talented baker called Jenna
19:14who works in a small town diner
19:16and feels trapped in an unhappy marriage
19:19until she finds a potential escape
19:21when she hears about a local pie-baking contest
19:23with a big cash prize.
19:25So, Les, you pay...
19:27You pay?
19:28No, you don't pay anybody.
19:29You play Joe.
19:31Old Joe, as he's called.
19:33Old Joe.
19:34And tell us how Old Joe fits into the story.
19:37Well, the story is basically about female friendship and empowerment,
19:42you know, and Jenna, played by the wonderful Carrie Hope Fletcher.
19:46I'm old Joe who runs...
19:48He owns the pie shop.
19:50And he becomes a kind of surrogate father for her.
19:54You know, he can see what's going on.
19:56Her relationship with her husband isn't good.
19:59Her friends are trying to get her out of that.
20:01But Joe sees that if she goes for this pie competition,
20:05she's got a chance, because she bakes amazing pies better than you did.
20:08Well, listen, anyone else could, yeah?
20:10No.
20:13So, it's a lovely show.
20:15Music by Sara Bareilles.
20:17So, I mean, it's a beautiful score and a wonderful cast.
20:21And, you know, it is about big themes, but it's funny, it's heartwarming,
20:26and you come out really feeling on top of the world.
20:29Lovely.
20:29That's what you want, isn't it?
20:31Yeah, it is, absolutely, yes.
20:32And pies always make things better.
20:33Well, always.
20:34Always.
20:34Savory or sweet.
20:36I have a lovely song where I sing to Jenna and I waltz with her
20:40and I say, take it from an old man.
20:42So, there you go, plain old men now.
20:45That's what it's come to.
20:46So, you're enjoying the rehearsal.
20:48It seems like you're really...
20:49It's a lovely, lovely process, yeah, and a really lovely cast, yeah.
20:53And there's lots of pies, obviously, in lots of the scenes.
20:56So, what happens?
20:56Have you got behind the scenes, like, a huge baking team?
21:01It's amazing.
21:01Making fresh stuff?
21:02Yeah, fresh stuff.
21:03There are fresh pies in the play, absolutely.
21:06It's a cholesterol nightmare!
21:08Dr. Pomata, played by Dan Partridge, he has to eat the pies that Jenna makes.
21:14So, he loves the pies.
21:17So, you've got some fake ones and...
21:18Some fake ones and some real ones, okay.
21:20Now, Les Theatre has always been a passion of yours,
21:23and we'd love you to tell us about when you went to the theatre
21:25and saw Shakespeare at 17, and how that really made a huge impression on you.
21:30I went with the school.
21:31I went to see Twelfth Night with the school, and we were reading it at school,
21:35and I thought, I don't really get this.
21:36But I went to see it and just absolutely loved it.
21:39There was an actor called Emrys James who played Festate the Clown,
21:43and I remember thinking, I want to do that one day.
21:46And when I was...
21:48Because I did get to do Twelfth Night recently at the age of 71,
21:53from 17 to 71, and I got to do it.
21:57I was Googling it and thought,
21:59wonder who was in that production that I saw?
22:01And it was Judi Dench.
22:03Oh, wow.
22:04You can't get better.
22:05And Donald Sinden as Malvolio.
22:07So it was an amazing...
22:08Oh, you just had Judi Dench there in that production.
22:11Yeah.
22:11It was...
22:11It just changed my life, and it made me think,
22:14I want to one day do some Shakespeare.
22:16It took me a while, but I got there.
22:18You got there?
22:18Yeah.
22:19And you've done loads of musicals.
22:20Yeah.
22:20You've done Chicago, Only Fools and Horses.
22:23Yes, absolutely.
22:23But, of course, it was Michael Ball
22:25that had you in fits of giggles on the stage, didn't he?
22:29We did Hairspray together, and, you know,
22:31if there is a prankster, is Michael on your show?
22:34Oh, yeah, yeah.
22:34Because he is the funniest man, and there's a glint in his eye.
22:39Oh, there is.
22:39Naughty, naughty little glint.
22:41When he's naughty, yeah.
22:42I mean, we had a number, timeless to me,
22:45where we had to create laughter for the audience,
22:48and it was kind of like, to some ways,
22:51that we had to joke and laugh.
22:53But beyond that, he was, you know, he would do things that just...
22:56And I had to stand there with two candy flosses,
23:01and I was just shaking behind the candy floss, thinking,
23:04I shouldn't be laughing, but I couldn't help it.
23:06He's just one of those wonderful...
23:07Oh, he's got me in trouble lots of times on this show.
23:10Yeah.
23:12Well, Waitress the Musical starts next Saturday
23:14at the new Wimbledon Theatre
23:16and then travels all across the UK and Ireland until October.
23:20Now, with less than six weeks to go until the London Marathon,
23:23over 55,000 runners are busy preparing to take on 26.2 miles around the city.
23:27Oh, that's a long way, isn't it?
23:28It is.
23:28But for those also observing Ramadan,
23:30they have added the challenge of staying connected, of course,
23:33to their faith alongside training.
23:35Here's Keen Runner and Race Across the World star,
23:37Iman Chowdhury, to tell us more.
23:41For many people, running is a lifeline.
23:44I'm Iman Chowdhury, I've run 16 marathons,
23:47and in 2020, I won Race Across the World with my nephew, Jameel.
23:51For the past month, I've been observing Ramadan
23:54and training for my next marathon, so I still have to run.
23:59I used to think running during Ramadan would distract me from what's important,
24:04but it's been quite the opposite.
24:06During Ramadan, millions of Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.
24:11To make sure I train well and observe Ramadan well, I make an early start.
24:16It's 4am. I'm pretty tired.
24:18This is Suho, the meal before the fast starts.
24:21This is my go-to breakfast. Oats and dates.
24:25Plenty of energy to last me the whole day.
24:28After breakfast, I head for the mosque.
24:30So it's ten past five in the morning,
24:32and I'm just about to go into the mosque to start the first prayer of the day.
24:36The discipline of attending these first prayers sets me up for the day.
24:40I'll pray five times all together before sunset.
24:45Some of my friends are also marathon training while fasting.
24:48And I've invited them to my local park run in Saltair near Bradford,
24:52along with my daughter Lily.
24:58One of the runners in training is Amara Patel,
25:01a specialist breast cancer pharmacist from Leeds.
25:04I don't feel that there has been a compromise with running and observing Ramadan.
25:09Running itself teaches you so much self-discipline.
25:12You know, there's times when you're running and you really want to stop,
25:14but you have to mentally teach yourself to keep going.
25:19Like, for me, for example, when I'm running,
25:21it sort of resets everything for the whole month.
25:23You're just starting fresh.
25:25I found it a challenge, I'm not going to lie.
25:27I've enjoyed doing it, though, because it is incredible seeing what your body's capable of,
25:33especially when you're fasting.
25:34We made it around the 5k course, but it'll be a few hours until we can grab a drink.
25:40We don't just abstain from food and water during the day.
25:43We also give up other things for our spiritual health.
25:46What was the most toughest thing training during Ramadan?
25:49Not being able to listen to music.
25:51When you're struggling in the last stages of a run,
25:53you put your headphones in and try and get through it,
25:55and not being able to do that has been tricky.
25:58I think it's just understanding what your body is capable of.
26:00Impressive, to be honest. I don't know how you do it.
26:02Having trained for marathons myself, I don't know how you do it without food or drink.
26:06Just a bit much for me. I wouldn't be able to do that.
26:08After a long day of fasting and running,
26:10we will finally get to eat and drink together.
26:13This evening, I've invited all my friends down to have iftar together at my house.
26:20Iftar is breaking our fast at sunset,
26:22and in Ramadan, we often share it with friends and family,
26:25and it's really needed after all that exercise.
26:29Normally, when you do a long run, you're fuelling throughout the run,
26:32whereas this time, because you've been fasting,
26:34you come home and you're like, OK, give me all the food.
26:38This is probably the best part, though,
26:40when you break fast with lots of people together.
26:42That's the main bit.
26:44Yeah.
26:44It's not the food, it's the company.
26:47Tonight is extra special because we are also looking forward to Eid,
26:51which marks the end of the month of Ramadan.
26:53Food is a huge part of it, and so is getting the family together.
26:57For us, Eid is with aunties, uncles, grandparents,
27:01like, everybody coming together.
27:04Although Ramadan is about discipline and sacrifice,
27:07we're all going to miss it.
27:08You've had a whole month of spending it with your mum, your dad,
27:11like, your family, seeing all your friends, like, every day at the mosque,
27:15and then all of a sudden it just stops.
27:17Do you know, I find it a bit bittersweet, though,
27:19because although there's that sadness that Ramadan is coming to an end,
27:22there's also the excitement of Eid day because everybody comes together then,
27:27and you all, like, get to have this big meal together,
27:30and you get the excitement of, like, you know, when you do secret Eid
27:33or you've got presents for the kids.
27:35Making and sharing sweets with friends and neighbours is a big feature of Eid,
27:39so we're finishing with the cake Amara has just brought round.
27:43So, we know where we're going on Eid now.
27:46At Amara's house for chocolate cake.
27:49The last few days have been amazing, both physically and mentally.
27:52I'm really looking forward to Eid, but I've got to keep training.
27:58Thanks for that, Iman.
27:59And Eid Mubarak for later this week.
28:01And, of course, massive luck for both the Manchester and London Marathons.
28:04Now then, Grace, we were talking a minute ago.
28:06You are doing soccerade.
28:08Braved it.
28:10Well, you're perfect for it, because Ella, of course, your partner,
28:14she's a professional footballer.
28:15Yeah.
28:16So, this should be...
28:17Well, I don't know, does it make it more difficult
28:19or does it make it easier?
28:20It's been like beating a dead horse for her.
28:22I can't dribble, but I am good at doing a little header, so...
28:26Are you?
28:26Yeah.
28:27I mean, the circumference on this Eid, so...
28:29You can't miss.
28:31So, that's...
28:31I'm hoping it goes well.
28:32Just aim here.
28:33You're also like a gazelle.
28:35You'll be adding down that pitch.
28:37Full glam, of course.
28:39Defender, striker, full...
28:40I don't know, number 10.
28:42That's all I've got for you.
28:44It means nothing.
28:44I want front row seats.
28:45I want front row seats.
28:46I want front row seats.
28:47I've got for you.
28:48And Judy quickly, last one laughing.
28:49Any tips?
28:51If you were in a room with Bob Mortimer, how not to laugh?
28:53I'd say don't underestimate him.
28:55It's just that simple.
28:56Legend of the game.
28:57Just keep it very simple.
28:59And just eat a lot of apples.
29:00That's what I did to try and get through.
29:02Unless you've got to box him.
29:03I boxed him.
29:04Oh, did you?
29:05We boxed.
29:06Celebrity boxing.
29:07I can't wait to see the next one.
29:10It was so brilliant.
29:11It was amazing.
29:12That's it for tonight.
29:13Thanks for our gifts.
29:14Clara and I will be back tomorrow with comedian Roisin Conati.
29:17Actors do Grace Scott and Kamel Lanado.
29:22Hopefully.
29:23Plus, Nikki, if we have watched all of them.
29:25Have a good evening.
29:26Goodbye.
29:27Bye.
29:28Bye.
29:29Bye.
29:30Bye.
29:32Bye.
29:32Bye.
29:35Bye.
29:35Bye.
