00:03Welcome back, everybody. It's PlayStation Experience Day 2.
00:06We are almost ready to wrap up the show, but first, we have a special treat for you.
00:10We're going to talk about Gravity Rush 2, a game that I'm very excited for.
00:13I feel like I'm saying that a lot. I'm excited for all of these games.
00:16So many exciting games coming out.
00:18I'm joined by the one and only Sid Schumann and the one and only Nick Acrodino,
00:23producer on Gravity Rush 2.
00:24Yes, yes.
00:25You're both one and only.
00:26Yes.
00:26I can't choose one of you. I love you both equally.
00:30So we have some footage of Gravity Rush 2, I believe, that we're going to hop into.
00:34We're going to see some new gameplay played by Toyama-san himself.
00:39Yeah, actually, Toyama-san was the one playing the footage in here.
00:41So our director expertly playing over here.
00:45This is our new build.
00:46Actually, just for PSX, we have like a 15-minute open world segment
00:51that just has a bunch of challenge missions and side missions in it
00:54for people to play with.
00:55That's what the timer is in the corner, so don't worry about that.
00:58Come January 20th, when it comes out, you will not have a timer in the corner.
01:02Look at that map.
01:03Oh, my goodness.
01:04That is maybe the coolest video game map I've ever seen.
01:08Yes.
01:08And the map is two and a half times bigger than the original game.
01:11Cool.
01:11So if you play the original one, you know how big it was,
01:13and this is just eclipsing it in terms of scale.
01:16I love how that map had different parallax effects going on
01:19to show the different heights.
01:20Yep.
01:21Yeah, there's a lot of different elevations going on.
01:25You can see just in the background all those islands floating up there.
01:27You can get to all of them.
01:29Lots of huge ships and everything.
01:31So there's a lower class, a middle class,
01:33and a high class society in the world of Gravity Rush,
01:36and you're going to visit all of them.
01:39So you can see in this footage Toyama-san was just kind of floating around.
01:43He was picking up some gems.
01:45He's powering himself up.
01:47Look at these menus.
01:48Yeah.
01:49Oh, my goodness.
01:49This wasn't in place the last time I saw this game.
01:52Well, you know, it's here.
01:53This looks amazing.
01:54Final fit and finish here.
01:56It's looking stylish.
01:57Yes.
01:57It looks really good.
01:58Yeah.
01:58And we're out before you know it, too.
02:00So yeah.
02:01When's the release date?
02:01It's soon.
02:02January 20th.
02:03Oh, wow.
02:03It's right around the corner.
02:04Friday, January 20th.
02:06Oh, my goodness.
02:07I'm so excited.
02:08I was such a big fan of the original Gravity Rush.
02:10I tried to platinum it,
02:11but some of those challenges were a little too much for me.
02:14Well, you know, actually, on the DualShock 4,
02:16I find that it's a little bit easier to complete something.
02:18Oh, yeah.
02:18Maybe I'll go back and play Remastered in the meantime.
02:20Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
02:22So one thing I know about Gravity Rush 2 here
02:24is our protagonist, Kat,
02:25has actually a couple of, like, sort of styles that she can fight in.
02:29So maybe you can talk us through what we're seeing here.
02:31Yeah.
02:32So this is actually the original Gravity style.
02:33So there's nothing too crazy here.
02:36You might recognize the moves.
02:37This is the Lunar style.
02:38So it's more of like a light Gravity style.
02:42You can see her kind of floating around expertly,
02:45like, just kicking back and forth.
02:46This is our Wormhole Kick.
02:48So she's just teleported to that guy
02:49and got past his projectiles to get to him.
02:53That style focuses more on, like, agility.
02:56Exactly.
02:56And homing in on enemies that are flying and getting away from you.
03:01So he just kind of switched back to the normal style
03:04to do some nice homing kicks over there.
03:07I love the, like, somersaulting through the air.
03:09Yeah.
03:10Seems like she's really gotten a handle on her gravity power
03:12since the first game.
03:13And this is our Jupiter style.
03:15It's the heavy style.
03:16So actually right now he's throwing these huge debris balls
03:20at that enemy to take him out.
03:22and again, this is one of our time limit battles.
03:25So he's trying to kill as many of these Nevi,
03:27these Scarabs, as he possibly can.
03:29Boom!
03:30Yep.
03:31Annihilated.
03:32Yeah.
03:32Oh, so good.
03:33That's one of our huge kicks.
03:34Brings up a bunch of debris and takes care of a lot of guys.
03:37What is that guy?
03:37The Surge Kick.
03:38These are just different Nevi and Scarabs.
03:41They're our enemies from the first game,
03:43but just take on a whole new look for Gravity Rush too.
03:47So there's going to be a lot of variety in what you fight,
03:51including some pretty huge enemies too.
03:54You've probably seen some of the bigger ones.
03:56These guys are bigger.
03:58But if you've checked out our Facebook gallery
04:00that we put up actually a little while ago,
04:02we showed off a city-sized boss that you're going to fight.
04:06All right.
04:07City-sized?
04:07City-sized boss.
04:08Yeah.
04:09It kind of transforms and has big tendrils made up of buildings.
04:13I don't know, man.
04:13That sounds kind of intimidating.
04:14Yeah.
04:15It's pretty great.
04:16You know, and if you've seen some of our footage before,
04:18Raven will join you to help you out for some of the battles
04:21and provide some tag team support for you as well.
04:24So speaking of Raven,
04:25it was revealed recently that the first DLC is actually coming
04:29with the game, and that's all about Raven, I believe, right?
04:32Yes.
04:32It's actually coming in March.
04:34It is completely free,
04:36but it is a substantial story DLC
04:40that's going to tell the story of what happened to the kids.
04:44I don't know if you remember in the first game,
04:46but there's these kids that Raven finds that are kind of locked
04:48in a gigantic arc,
04:49and they're there at the end of the game,
04:51and we never kind of finish that story.
04:53Oh, okay.
04:53So we're going to tell what happened to them,
04:55and that's her DLC.
04:57She's playable.
04:58But yeah, it is a substantial DLC.
05:00It's coming out in March,
05:01free for everybody who has the game.
05:03So it's just going to be available,
05:05and we'll make it known that everybody can check it out.
05:08Hey, Sid.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Did you know that there's a character named Sid in this game?
05:11I did not.
05:12There sure is.
05:13Yeah, he was one of the main characters in the first game,
05:15and I believe he makes a return.
05:16Yes.
05:16Is he the coolest character around?
05:18He's all right.
05:20He's a lot more important than you might think.
05:22Oh.
05:23He's like me.
05:24But he's a good friend of Cat's.
05:27I think he was a police officer in the first game.
05:30Yeah.
05:30He gets sucked up with Cat and Raven into a gravity storm
05:33after the end of the first game,
05:36and Cat and Sid kind of get displaced into this new world,
05:40and that's actually how Gravity Rush 2 starts off.
05:44So that's the beginning of the game,
05:46and then eventually you make your way back to this new area,
05:49Jirga Parallel, and back to Hexaville.
05:52What we're seeing right now is a side mission
05:55that involves the camera mode in the game.
05:58So the game has a camera mode.
06:00Oh, sweet.
06:02This guy asked you to take pictures of beautiful women,
06:05so you're actually going around asking these women
06:08if you can take a picture.
06:10And they're like, uh, no?
06:11You can see a lot of them aren't too sold in on it.
06:16Oh, there we go.
06:17There we go.
06:18We have someone.
06:18Photo mode.
06:19Yep.
06:19Hit R1, take a picture.
06:22There's actually a cool mode, too.
06:24We'll get to it a little bit later,
06:25where you can set up a tripod
06:27and actually have Cat running in front of the camera
06:29to do fun things and posing.
06:31And there's all sorts of filters
06:33and costumes you can unlock as you play the game
06:35to kind of, you know, add to the whole experience.
06:38Cool.
06:38That's an interesting take on the classic mode that we've seen.
06:42Absolutely.
06:43And this old lady likes her picture taken, too.
06:45She's a beautiful woman.
06:46So we'll go with that.
06:47Here's an example of one of the costumes in the game.
06:49Oh, cool.
06:51And these are actually photo items that you'll get and unlock.
06:55You know, may or may not be some DLC items coming for photo mode.
07:00Oh, that's awesome.
07:00You can place toilets.
07:03I would put just like 50 toilets there.
07:05Yeah.
07:06Well, you can.
07:07It's up to you.
07:08You know, you can pose and take pictures.
07:10Oh, that's so cool.
07:11That's like a really interesting photo mode.
07:14Yeah.
07:14This is actually really exciting to me
07:16because I love to take pictures.
07:17Well, you know, Toyama-san is awesome at photography, too.
07:20And when they did a ton of research for this,
07:22they were taking pictures of all sorts of locales.
07:25So this area, Jirga Paralau,
07:27is based off of a South American trip that they had
07:31and just lots of different architecture from that area.
07:34Cool.
07:35He's big into photography,
07:36and I think it really shines if you see this.
07:39Now we're checking out kind of,
07:40this looks like a time trial.
07:41Yes, this is a time race.
07:42Yeah.
07:43And he's using the lunar mode
07:45and the gravity slide here to make up some time.
07:49Yeah, I remember using that gravity slide
07:50extensively in the time trials in the first game.
07:53It looks like you can kind of augment that a little bit
07:56with the different styles.
07:57Well, so this is a freestyle one.
07:58There are ones that require you to do the slide.
08:00So we have all sorts.
08:02Okay.
08:04And so kind of cut around here a little bit.
08:06This is one of our new areas in the game.
08:08This is like the upper high class area.
08:13Not quite sure if you can hear the music,
08:14but it's a very classy, jazzy piece composed by Kohei Tanaka,
08:21who's our audio composer.
08:23Did an amazing job with this game.
08:25And actually, if you pre-order it,
08:27you get access to the Director's Choice soundtrack for free.
08:31Oh, nice.
08:32So there's like 12 tracks in there, 10 to 12 tracks.
08:36They're gorgeous.
08:38And the music in the game is like some of the best parts.
08:41Yeah, this is a really cool looking place, cool environment.
08:44It's different than the stuff that we've seen so far.
08:46How many other different types of places do you think?
08:49Oh, there's dozens.
08:50Oh, really?
08:51Yeah, and you will go back to areas in the first game.
08:54The first game's area is completely embedded within this.
08:57Oh, wow.
08:58Yeah.
08:59Everything you remember is going to be here.
09:01And with obviously a very beefed up coat of paint, right?
09:05Nice.
09:05Yeah, it looks just amazing running on PS4.
09:08The first game was built originally for Vita
09:11and then later came out on PS4 remastered.
09:13And it looked really good.
09:14But this game being built from the ground up for PS4,
09:17it just looks stunning.
09:18Yep.
09:19Always worth calling out, I think, the sort of art style.
09:23It has kind of a European, I think like a French,
09:26kind of overtone.
09:26Yep.
09:28It's inspired by Bain Desinée.
09:30And I'm probably screwing up the French, and I apologize.
09:33Better than I would.
09:34Yeah.
09:35Franco-Belgian art style, popularized by Mobius in the 80s.
09:41So very reminiscent of that.
09:43Right now we're actually doing a side mission
09:44where Kat is delivering newspapers to people.
09:48So she's using the stasis power to throw newspapers
09:51at all of these targets who are people looking for their morning edition.
09:56A really interesting take on the classic paperboy formula.
10:00Yeah, absolutely.
10:01Except now you're doing it floating in the air.
10:05It's changing in all different ways.
10:06So I saw the cutscenes we were seeing earlier.
10:09The classic comic book style cutscenes, just like in the first game.
10:13Yep.
10:14So those are in there.
10:15There's also in-engine gorgeous cutscenes as well.
10:19I'm sure we've shown those.
10:21Actually, our new trailer featuring Raven
10:22has as an example of some of those as well.
10:26This is actually one of our mining sections.
10:28So when Kat starts off the game,
10:31she's in a mining settlement called the Banga Settlement.
10:34And you can actually go down there and mine for these gems,
10:38which help her power up.
10:40A lot more opportunities to power up in this game.
10:42But it kind of takes on a little bit of like a chalice dungeon feel to it.
10:49Where there's some exclusive bosses down there and items you can get.
10:53You can even see where other people have fallen
10:56and kind of died in that area.
10:59Yep.
11:00And pick up items that they've dropped as well.
11:02Fascinating.
11:03Yeah, there's some really cool asynchronous multiplayer.
11:05Oh, the menu.
11:07Just once again, I have to call out how beautiful these menus,
11:10just the pause menu and the inventory screen and the level up menu.
11:13Thank you.
11:14You're such a sucker for stylish menus.
11:16I'm a nerd for like UI and stuff.
11:18Persona 5 is another favorite of yours.
11:20Yep.
11:20For the same reasons.
11:22Another good looking one.
11:23And animation, right?
11:24And actually, we've teamed up with Studio Kara,
11:28who do the Evangelion movies.
11:29Oh, yeah.
11:29To produce a really cool Gravity Rush anime.
11:33That's going to be hitting soon to tell a little bit of the story
11:37that hasn't been told yet.
11:39So people will be, that will be coming up soon.
11:42That's a cool trend.
11:43I'm enjoying this trend of like side-by-side game anime things.
11:47I just watched the Final Fantasy XV anime before starting that game.
11:51And it was really cool.
11:52It was a nice little back story before I started playing the game.
11:54Absolutely.
11:54So, I mean, that's absolutely gorgeous.
11:58So, yeah, I think, you know, kind of coming around,
12:00showing the map again.
12:01and lots of like gorgeous stuff in this game.
12:04There's like over 50 side missions.
12:06There's dozens and dozens of challenge missions.
12:08The game is just jam-packed with content.
12:12I have tried to play through it as many times as I can,
12:14and I just don't have time because it's huge.
12:16I guess I never really realized how much this feels like just a really well,
12:20like a really tightly crafted open-world game.
12:23Yep.
12:24And, you know, it's kind of astounding just how much they stuff into this one.
12:30Of course, PS4 exclusive.
12:32So really taking advantage of the hardware and just blowing it out.
12:35So now, Nick, for a newcomer to the series,
12:38what do you think is maybe the most compelling feature that you would call out
12:42to get somebody like interested in Gravity Rush 2?
12:45Oh, gosh.
12:48You know, there's nothing quite like Gravity Rush, I feel like.
12:52You know, there's a lot of open-world games now,
12:54but one featuring a completely original female protagonist
12:59with this kind of an art style that can, like, manipulate Gravity
13:04and just has these superhero aspects,
13:07yet is telling a very personal story seen through a Japanese lens
13:12with, like, you know, European flair to it.
13:14Gravity Rush 3 does have a very interesting, like, voice and identity.
13:18There's, like, there's nothing like this.
13:20And this is very symbolic of our Japan studio.
13:24Like, they produce some of the most original content in the world,
13:26and it's a pleasure to be a part of it and to show it off
13:29and have you guys excited for it.
13:31Cool. Well, Nick, that's fantastic.
13:33Gravity Rush 2 is coming out January 20th.
13:36Friday, January 20th.
13:37Yep.
13:38I'm super excited for it. I can't wait.
