00:00So you should go and play it, this is the exact same demo you can play, and we're going to
00:03do Scenario Mode.
00:05So, just take you through that one.
00:08Ok, I like that it's got a time limit going, so that me and you can't just sit here and
00:12end up talking.
00:12No, it's fine, I turned that off, don't you worry, I thought I'm up with Holly, I'm going to turn
00:15that off, no problems.
00:17So, we've got as much time as we need.
00:19So, Tales of Biseria, what mothership title, what number are we on now?
00:2416, this is number 16.
00:26Oh my god.
00:26I know, not including spinoffs, this is the main title, so, it's cool.
00:31It's always good to see more Tales.
00:32It always starts with a lovely cutscene.
00:35Love to see Tales coming to the West.
00:39And this one's a particularly good one, it's specifically just for the PS4, and normally obviously we've done PS3 and
00:44PS4, but this one is just for the PS4, and it's absolutely gorgeous.
00:47It really is.
00:48Coming early 2017 for all those Tales fans that want to go out and pre-order right now, you're very
00:52welcome to.
00:53No date just yet then?
00:54No date just yet, but if I was like super early, super early 2017?
01:00Super early, okay.
01:02Super early 2017.
01:02We'll take what we can get.
01:03Yeah.
01:04It's all good.
01:04So, we've triggered a little skit.
01:08So, you all recognise these?
01:10Yeah, I love the skit.
01:11Yeah, I remember a good skit.
01:13And obviously these are a bit of a staple of the Tales of franchise.
01:16Anyone that's ever played them is going to be like, I remember this, and their main purpose is just to,
01:21you know, give you backstory, build on the character relationships, and so you can really get to know each of
01:25their little traits.
01:28I mean, these are optional, if people just do want to charge through with the story, but really, Tales of
01:33has always been about its skits.
01:35This is really where you learn about the characters, really where you fall in love with them as well.
01:38And like you say, you can skip them, because you get lots of opportunities, and they build on different bits,
01:42whether it's characters or world building, and as you kind of go through, you can choose.
01:46So, this one, without kind of being able to hear them, you maybe miss a little bit of the charm,
01:52but this one's okay.
01:53We'll just...
01:55I love that.
01:56Basically, Maggie Lewis teaching Lafacer a little spell, because he's a bit nervous, he's not sure about this dungeon, it's
02:01a bit dark, it's a bit dreary, and he's not 100% convinced.
02:04But she's a bit of a prankster, so she's really going to drag it out, make him work for it,
02:09and bless his little cons, he's so young that he's going to go with it.
02:12He's going for it, yeah.
02:13He's like, whatever you say, I'm going to totally do it.
02:16It's all the enthusiasm.
02:18And then she's going to turn around and shut him down.
02:21So mean.
02:22Tales series has always had a most beautiful art style as well.
02:26They do.
02:26And seeing it on PS4 actually, it's surprising how much more, how much further you can take things.
02:32Yeah.
02:33I mean, for a real anime, manga fan, it's absolutely beautiful, and obviously all the amazing anime cutscenes, all done
02:38by Fotoball and everything.
02:39You know, they did Fate Stay Night in a wonderfully well-renowned studio.
02:43There's openings, with the opening songs.
02:45Yeah, oh my god.
02:46And we've got Burn this time around, and it's absolutely amazing.
02:48You can kind of watch that on our YouTube channel.
02:52So, as I said, they kind of have, because this is a demo, you're going to get a little battle
02:56tutorial.
02:56I'm just going to talk to you about the Liberation Motion Battle System, which kind of...
03:02We were chatting about this, weren't we?
03:04So, the Tales series, you know, like, Final Fantasy is turn-based, and that's really, as we grew up, that's
03:09what we all connected to it.
03:11Oh my god.
03:11The motion battle system, or has it evolved into the LMB, the linear motion battle system, for Tales series if
03:18it's a staple.
03:19And then every game adds a little bit of something to the LMB.
03:24But it's a pre-roaming, especially now it's in 3D, it's the pre-roaming battle.
03:30And I think what's really lovely about it is that, obviously in a classic JRPG, you've got a turn-based
03:35battle system, so that can maybe slow the pace down a little bit.
03:38Tales really keeps the pace nice and quick, kind of makes you think, makes you very strategic.
03:44We've got lots of different moves you can do.
03:46So this one's actually going to show you Break Soul.
03:48And Break Soul is your sort of Berserk mode.
03:52So here's Velvet, she's just going to go into Break Soul.
03:55And it's a Therion form, she actually will do a different type of Break Soul, depending on the enemy.
03:59she's fighting.
04:01And this kind of just allows you to go Berserk, you've got extra strength, you take less damage,
04:05defense is high.
04:07It's obviously got a limited time, but it'll get you out of a really tricky spot, especially
04:12if you're surrounded by enemies.
04:14This is so cool.
04:15Yeah.
04:15And it looks great.
04:16I've always loved the pace of the Tales of Cities, because we always talk about it, but
04:21Ni No Kuni.
04:22Oh yeah.
04:22Which is like one of our favorites.
04:24Which is our baby.
04:25Because I was working on that when I was working on Tails over at Namco, and it was just like,
04:30the difference in pace was just incredible.
04:32Yeah.
04:32It makes a big, big difference.
04:34And like I say, it does allow you to be a little bit more strategic, so you could choose
04:37to activate that Break Soul at a really critical time, or you could choose to go into a whole
04:42heap of enemies.
04:43I think I've missed something.
04:44Oh, look at that.
04:45There it is.
04:45I haven't missed it.
04:47And obviously as you're going around the world, you're collecting items.
04:49I'll give you a quick...
04:50I love the gels.
04:51Apple gels.
04:51There you go.
04:52Oh yeah.
04:53The many, just a quick snapshot of all the many things you can pick up on the way around.
04:59But yeah, I mean it keeps the battles really, really fast.
05:02Which, you know, if you're a big fan of JRPGs, and I certainly am myself, and I know you
05:06are as well Holly.
05:07Yeah.
05:07It's a lot of hours.
05:09Or many hours.
05:10Sometimes you're like, oh, I wish this would go faster, but Tails always keeps it really
05:14nice and fast, so you're not bogged down by it, which is great.
05:20So, another apple jar.
05:21It's just amazing to see more and more of them coming to the West, and the way I suppose
05:27Namco and people like Babasan reacted to kind of the unified Tails community, especially
05:33in Europe.
05:34Yeah.
05:34It's just incredible, and it just goes a long way to show that it really matters to
05:39them.
05:40It does, definitely.
05:41And I mean they love seeing, you know, people from all over the world playing their games
05:45and enjoying them.
05:47So, yeah, for them it's totally worth the effort, and certainly something they love to
05:51do to bring them over to these Western audiences.
05:53I mean Babasan, especially, he's the director for this one, for the Tails series.
05:57He is Mr. Tails series.
05:59He is Mr. Tails series.
05:59He is Mr. Tails series.
06:00He is the most genuine I think I've ever met, especially when I've been in the industry.
06:05And just really enthusiastic, really passionate.
06:06So, we've got a cat's box.
06:08Right.
06:09But I only have 25.
06:10I need 25, I've got eight cat spirits.
06:12So, I guess I've got more adventuring to do.
06:15No, it's not.
06:15Try harder.
06:16Come on.
06:17Yeah, more adventuring please.
06:18More cat spirits required.
06:20So, classic sort of things.
06:23So, just in case anyone's wondering what cat spirits are, these are cat spirits.
06:27I did wonder what the collectibles were.
06:29Yeah.
06:29So, cat spirits.
06:30So, in every level you're going to get one of those cat's boxes.
06:32It's just going to give you some super goodies by the end of it.
06:34We like goodies.
06:35We like opening treasure chests.
06:37Yeah.
06:37So, we've got a little bit of a puzzle.
06:39I've opened a door.
06:40Got to now find the door again.
06:42I'm sure that'll be totally fine.
06:44I think we can find that door.
06:45I think we can find that door.
06:46I think we'll be alright.
06:46I think I remember passing that.
06:47Scroll to it.
06:48Yeah.
06:48Okay.
06:48I think we can find that.
06:50It is worth remembering this is a demo build.
06:52So, it is made for like shows where people don't have time to sit and play a game for
06:57like three hours.
06:58To discover the mechanics.
06:59Yeah.
06:59And because it's a demo, you're obviously getting, this is a point in the game.
07:03Yeah.
07:04Maybe it's early on.
07:04Maybe it's the middle.
07:05Maybe it's towards the end.
07:06But obviously everything's set up so that it's super easy to play and you'll be able
07:10to get a real feel for it.
07:12Now, without really spoiling anything, can you give us a bit of an idea where we are
07:17going?
07:17Because again, like other JRPG series at Final Fantasy, they're all independent of each
07:21other.
07:22Yeah.
07:22So, you can just pick up if you, it doesn't matter if you've played Tales of Graces F or
07:26Zillia or Abyss, you could pick up the series and just go.
07:29Yeah.
07:29Complete, yeah.
07:30So, every single Tales story stands entirely on its own.
07:33And so, for this one, we've got our very first solo female protagonist.
07:37Yay!
07:37We obviously had Mila and Jude in Zillia, but now we've got Velvet, she's our leading
07:42lady.
07:43And, speak devil, there she is.
07:45And so, this is totally about her story and it's a slightly darker story because it's
07:49very much focusing on her tale of revenge in all honesty and sort of that burning desire
07:55to get revenge for some very, very horrible misdeeds that were done to her in her past.
07:59and as she goes through her journey, she's sort of, in a classic way, picking up a ragtag
08:04crew of people with their own motivations.
08:07It's amazing how you can do that, isn't it?
08:08Yeah.
08:09Lots of mercenaries that just want to be for you.
08:11I think what's quite nice about this one is, I'm not going to spoil anything, I promise,
08:16but knowing some of the characters as I do, some of their motivations are A, not what they
08:21appear, but also could be a little bit detrimental if Velvet doesn't keep her wits about her.
08:26and her big thing is, you know, she's a slave to her emotion and she's surrounded by these
08:32very logical, her enemies in it are called the Abbey and they believe in logic and reason
08:37and that's the way to govern and Velvet's very much about her emotions, she's following
08:41her heart, she's following this burning desire for revenge, so she's got to be careful not
08:46to get herself into trouble, temper it maybe with a bit of both.
08:49I always find those types of stories especially just are very much in line with the Tales series
08:54and how it likes to portray itself as well.
08:57Yeah.
08:57It's, I don't want to say classic, but it's really how it feels.
09:01I think it belongs to a Tales series, that story.
09:03Absolutely, and I think the nice thing about it is it's something we all understand.
09:07Yeah.
09:07You know, we've all had that moment where we've maybe let all their emotions run away with
09:10us a little bit and so we can sympathise with Velvet, we can empathise with her and how
09:15she feels and what she's going through.
09:16Now all of these people are in the battle at once?
09:18All these people are in the battle at once, yeah.
09:20I mean I can actually switch to any character, so I can switch to Lafacette, Rokoro, that's
09:25Eleanor, and I can just go through and utilise any of their attacks.
09:28If I've got a particular fighter that's going to be more effective against an enemy I can
09:32choose them.
09:33Yeah, to make sure that it's definitely being dead.
09:35And I can actually trigger something called a Switch Blast, which I'll hope to do
09:39in the next time we have a battle.
09:41I've done it once or twice but I wasn't talking about it at the time, which is where you're
09:45basically just selecting another character and they come in and use a really big sort
09:48of super move.
09:49And then it's a really good opportunity if you're very low on your Blast Gauge, which
09:53is...
09:54I was about to say, it's like, come on.
09:56That is...
09:56I know plenty well that if a wall's got a crack in it, it can be destroyed.
09:59Absolutely.
10:00I mean, that wasn't too obvious, but the cat spirit there and everything, just in case
10:03you missed it.
10:04But if you get really low on your Blast Gauge, which is the number of effectively maybe tokens
10:08that you can use in your linear motion battle system, you can use the Switch Blast, which
10:15is going to bring in another character, they'll have their full Blast Gauge absolutely ready
10:18to you and they actually get one more token.
10:20So by bringing them in, you actually give them extra moves to hit and a great opportunity
10:24to get yourself out of a tricky spot if you are in one, which obviously I have not been
10:29yet on this demo.
10:30I mean, obviously everything's fine.
10:32I haven't...
10:33I'm in control.
10:33Yeah, I've got it.
10:34It's fine.
10:35I haven't played it 18 times in a row.
10:37It's all good.
10:38So, yeah.
10:39I'd like to just say that you're in the Namco office and all you do is play the same demo
10:42build over and over again.
10:43Yeah, in the boardroom and people walking past going, I'm sure she's done that already.
10:46She's not getting very far.
10:48I'm like, yeah, that's great.
10:50So, back up the stairs, because I think we've worked out where that other door is now.
10:53Yeah, I think we're feeling...
10:55It's fairly...
10:55I think...
10:55At least it explains...
10:58Everyone's so fit and healthy.
11:00It's constantly running up and down stairs.
11:02I could barely run for the bus.
11:04I had to run across the car park to get here.
11:06Yes, you did get here.
11:07Barely made it on time for today's presentation.
11:10Barely made it.
11:10Traffic was a murder.
11:11Don't have that problem in a Tales game.
11:14Actually, on the big main...
11:16So, if you do choose to play the demo and you decide to play a battle mode, you'll be
11:19able to unlock the geoboard, which is effectively a hoverboard, and it's just so cool!
11:25So cool!
11:26And that allows you to traverse the world nice and quickly on this amazing hoverboard.
11:31I'm very jealous.
11:32I want one.
11:33I'm a bit sad that they haven't yet been invented.
11:35I can't get around how nice it is to see the Tales series again.
11:39Yeah, it's gorgeous.
11:39I mean, the voice acting is...
11:41So, I put the English voiceover on.
11:43You can obviously have Japanese as well, but the voice acting is absolutely brilliant.
11:46And, you know, it really adds to the characters.
11:49They're all very unique.
11:50They're all very, very well sort of shaped.
11:53And they have, like I say, their own motivations, things they're doing for their own reasons.
11:57I hope we can make this work out.
11:57This is quite a cute little skit because it's actually explaining the relationship between
12:02Lafacet and Eleanor.
12:03So, Lafacet is a Malak, which means that he's effectively kind of like a tool.
12:08He's a magical entity and they will use him to use moves and attack.
12:12And so he has a bond with Eleanor, which is very, very unique.
12:14Right.
12:15But it kind of goes against everything Velvet stands for.
12:18You know, she's about freedom and your emotions.
12:19And because he's just sort of...
12:22This emotional...
12:23Yeah, he's tied to her.
12:24He's there as a tool.
12:24He doesn't get to make his own choices.
12:26And she 100% doesn't agree with that.
12:28But she also doesn't entirely get their relationship and how important it is.
12:32So, this is her making a bit of a misstep and getting a little slap on the wrist by those
12:38that do know.
12:40So, she wants to know what his true name is.
12:43And she's just trying to explain, I can't tell you that.
12:45That's right.
12:45And that's between me and my person I'm in the contract with, who's Eleanor.
12:51But look at her, she's so fired up.
12:52Calm, calm.
12:53It's all right, Val.
12:53It's all right.
12:54And I can't tell you anyway.
12:55He can't tell her.
12:57Well, you don't have to get so worked up about it.
13:00It's kind of interesting because all the characters are on that scale.
13:02Somewhere between that very emotional self and that very logical, reasonable self.
13:06And it's interesting you say that all Tales games stand alone.
13:09Yes.
13:09Because they do.
13:10But anyone that has played Zestiria might recognise Aizen.
13:15Our thousand-year-old pirate.
13:18So, yeah, I won't say anything more about that.
13:21But this is the only one that sort of, I think, gives a bit of a nod nod.
13:23Wink wink.
13:24Yeah, there's a good one.
13:25A couple of them have had that, yeah.
13:27I'm sort of very self-aware, but this one's a little bit more connected, which is nice.
13:32So.
13:33I do love that it has the Japanese voices as an option because, again, that's something
13:38the Tales community went through.
13:39Originally, the games weren't coming over with it.
13:41They were very passionate about it.
13:43When we were at Namco, we fed it back.
13:45And then they made that going forward.
13:47Yeah.
13:47That's become something because the fans wanted it.
13:50Yeah.
13:50And it's really important because also, you know, if you're a big fan of Japanese culture
13:54and, you know, JRPGs in general, you want that really authentic experience and you're
13:58still going to get that.
13:59Yeah.
14:00So, yes, we now have enough cat spirits.
14:03Oh, no, you can't see him because I'm standing in the wrong place.
14:06He's so cute.
14:07Basically, a little chap pops out and he's got cats ears on.
14:09He's going to spray me in glitter and confetti, which is lovely.
14:12Aww.
14:12That would be why that treasure chest looks adorable, though, quite frankly.
14:14Adorable.
14:14He's got a little tiny onesie on.
14:16He's got a little cat ears and it's all like, oh, here's some treasure.
14:18And I'm like, yeah.
14:19What did we just get from that treasure chest?
14:21So, we got a lizard's tail, which is going to allow us to escape in battle if we're in
14:23a really tricky place.
14:24Okay.
14:25So, you're getting a sort of that really rare, high quality item.
14:27And we also got a big boost of consumables.
14:29So, I mean, I'm not saying that clearly there's something more we have to do.
14:35I don't know.
14:36Let's have a look.
14:37So, I got a stone.
14:39I've got the chalice.
14:40We know that the chalice, can I put the stone in the chalice?
14:42Yeah.
14:43You set the jewel and burn away the fire.
14:46That's what we're looking for.
14:48The final door.
14:49That was it.
14:50Okay.
14:54Yeah, this is the final door.
14:57The final door in the dungeon.
14:59Okay.
15:00It's like you're a professional.
15:02I know.
15:03It's like I've done this before at some point.
15:05Once or twice.
15:06Once or twice.
15:06So, here we go.
15:10Ready?
15:11Yeah, I think I'm ready.
15:12I've got my extra consumables.
15:13I'm ready.
15:13Let's do this.
15:15Yeah, another really beautiful, all obviously indentured but cutscene.
15:19It's the art style.
15:20Again, I'm an anime fan and it's a lot of what I grew up watching.
15:24And it just looks like, yeah.
15:26Yeah, but it's a really high quality.
15:28Really, really excellent.
15:29And very stylistic.
15:30Because obviously they're so well known.
15:32Yeah.
15:32For the way they look and their watercolour.
15:34Front covers and things.
15:36They're beautiful artwork.
15:36So.
15:37Then that makes this demon.
15:40Yeah.
15:41She must be the missing.
15:42This is the missing priestess of the temple.
15:45Wait a minute.
15:47Uh oh.
15:48She doesn't look right at all.
15:51Okay.
15:52I'm ready.
15:53Let's do this.
15:54Don't let me down now.
15:56Oh my god, the pressure.
15:57Bit of break soul.
16:00So this is your berserk mode, right?
16:01I'm there.
16:01Switch over.
16:02Switch blast.
16:03Bring Aizen in.
16:05He's gonna be upset.
16:05He's actually out of ammo as well.
16:07So I'm gonna switch to.
16:08Not Lapisette.
16:09I love you Lapisette.
16:10But not today.
16:10But not today.
16:11So we're gonna go rope through with his double blades.
16:14A lot of time for him.
16:17One boss.
16:17Fast enemies.
16:18Lots of destruction.
16:20It is fast.
16:22Let's see if I can expect another.
16:23Yeah.
16:24Bring Velva in.
16:29It's ridiculous how much of a professional you are.
16:31Yes, I've done it!
16:32You just made that look ridiculous.
16:33I always thought, yeah.
16:34But it's not, obviously.
16:36So prone.
16:36But there we go.
16:37We have defeated the boss of the temple.
16:39And after every battle, you kind of get this little moment.
16:42Again, they exchange witticisms.
16:44Jokes.
16:45Yeah.
16:45And you get to get a little bit more about the characters.
16:47So I know when I press this button.
16:49Yeah.
16:50Back to the start screen.
16:51Oh, I mean, look at the app.
16:52But then.
