04:32so we brought the grid back
04:35a few updates ago
04:36but it was actually built to classic scale
04:38and it didn't work with like modern maps
04:39so that was something that we kind of actually changed
04:41and built a modern scaled version of the grid
04:44which was kind of fun
04:46this is a new thing that we have
04:48we built new materials for this update
04:50so there's two new material overlays
04:51this is the new emissive material that we have
04:54and it literally just glows and lights up rooms
04:56there's more control parameters
04:57so you can actually control how much it glows
04:59which is really cool
05:00it'll allow for some really neat lighting techniques
05:03these were something that were built internally
05:05as of a hackathon
05:05these just kind of
05:06we call them pyramoids
05:07they're just kind of a weird little
05:09like pyramid angle piece
05:10that you can build stuff out of
05:11they're just kind of fun
05:13this is
05:14so we also adjusted the material overlay
05:16so you can control them a little bit better
05:17so you can make your grime a little bit lighter
05:20make it a little more medium
05:21make it really heavy
05:22it just gives a lot more variety to your levels
05:25and then the other one we really liked
05:26is this is shellac
05:28so we made it look like you just
05:30you know put a lot of layer
05:31large layers of polyurethane over your objects
05:33and it gives them that really smooth
05:35kind of clean look
05:36and kind of futurey
05:36which is kind of cool
05:37or it makes these bricks look flat
05:39which is kind of fun too
05:41this is something that the community has been really asking for too
05:43is the destructible pieces from the campaign
05:46so we brought a lot of those in
05:48as well as like
05:49kind of the more organic ones
05:51the walls
05:51the kind of Sinhealy style ones
05:53there's just a lot of pieces for destruction
05:55which is great
05:57we made the flag as a separate object
05:59so that they can script around it
06:00again like mini game focus
06:01we wanted to give them as many tools
06:03for building like their own game modes
06:04that was kind of our big focus
06:06and then there's some classic weapons
06:08that are going in here
06:08the grenade launcher
06:09which is going to be a big favorite
06:10and then the beam right
06:12or the sentinel beam
06:12which is really cool
06:13and then there's the ball
06:14which we also put in here as well
06:16so you can tinker with that
06:18boundaries on things can be visible now
06:20you can make a boundary visible
06:21so it's always there
06:22even when you're spartan
06:23and then this one we scripted it
06:25so that when you walk in
06:26it turns on the underwater effect
06:28and we spawned in some fish
06:29nice
06:29so you can kind of see
06:30like you know
06:31you can do all kinds of stuff
06:32and then you walk out
06:33boop
06:33that goes right back away
06:34so it's all just like
06:35the scripting is super powerful
06:36and we'll get into that
06:37in a little while
06:38and then these are scriptable targets
06:40so these are just kind of
06:41generic targets
06:42you don't see them
06:42but like if I shot it
06:43it would go away
06:44but that way you can trigger
06:45an event off of it
06:46like something getting shot
06:48and then ever importantly
06:50a lot of new alien foliage
06:51it also looks nice
06:53in the underwater
06:53which is good too
06:54so it kind of just
06:55add a lot of versatility
06:56and like these are really cool plants
06:58and the community
06:58really really really
06:59loves their plants
07:00so we're giving them
07:01lots of plants
07:02so this yeah
07:02just to give a quick look
07:03here's beautiful
07:04like moody dramatic
07:05underwater canvas
07:06and it's all flat
07:07it's a build off of it
07:08it uses the same terrain pieces
07:10that you'd use
07:11from the title map as well
07:12it's two awesome looking canvases
07:14but what I keep hearing the most about
07:16scripting and minigames
07:17so what are we looking at right now
07:18so we're looking at a community map
07:20called Freight
07:21that we pulled in
07:21because we wanted to build
07:22King of the Hill
07:23that was one of the kind of
07:24benchmark modes that we needed to build
07:26it's a lot of foundational pieces there
07:27so we pulled this map in
07:28added a lot of extra pieces to it
07:31did some extra scripting
07:32put King of the Hill
07:33this is a version we call
07:34Diminishing King
07:34on here where you actually
07:36it starts with all the hills
07:37and it reduces them as you play
07:38until you're fighting
07:39at one kind of central location
07:41it gets pretty dramatic and epic
07:43but it was really cool
07:44he had a really cool
07:44scripted cargo containers
07:45and so we enhanced the scripting
07:46a little bit on those
07:47with the new toys
07:48and then we're showing off
07:50this is our new physics piece
07:51we have these physics hinges and joints
07:53so I made these cargo containers
07:55over the water
07:55and there's this epic play
07:57that happened in there
07:57where he grabbed the power up
07:59but it literally will swing by itself
08:01and the users can actually build
08:03these themselves really
08:04pretty easily
08:05once you kind of understand
08:05how they work
08:06you'll see all the little nav points
08:07so we have ways of generating nav points
08:09you can change colors of things
08:11assign them to different teams
08:12put different labels on the nav points
08:14and kind of basically
08:15really rebuild your own modes
08:16that was our goal
08:17we want people to build their own modes
08:19until we
08:20until their heart's content really
08:21and then it's all hooked up
08:23on like dynamic scripting things
08:24so this cargo container
08:25can move up and down
08:26which was really cool
08:28and then just a lot of little details
08:29like even
08:30I got really obsessed one day
08:31where there's a
08:32Timmy the Whale's in the water here
08:33and if he'll do it every so and so
08:36he blinks his eyes
08:36just kind of randomly
08:38just because it was fun
08:40and then what we tried to do
08:41with a lot of the scripting
08:42so with the King of the Hill
08:43we wanted to kind of set
08:45some standards for how to build these things
08:47and so like these are all the script brains
08:49that control the mode
08:51and they're pretty simple
08:52like we're actually going to release
08:53our design documentation
08:54on how these work
08:55so they can learn from them
08:56and then kind of modify them
08:58make them better
08:59do whatever they want with them
09:00so it's kind of an interesting
09:01little experiment
09:02how compact could we make these
09:03and then how versatile could they be
09:05like this
09:06these like handful of script brains
09:08can actually make like 10 different versions
09:09of this mode
09:10from all the hills
09:11to one hill at a time
09:12to rotating hills
09:13so it's kind of neat to see
09:14all the different variety of things
09:15that you could do with them
09:16I know a lot of fans
09:17are going to be super excited
09:18to have the return of King of the Hill
09:19and then some right
09:20because who's to see
09:21what variations come of that
09:23we even have another variation
09:24we're going to ship with it
09:24and there's another sort of fan favorite
09:26we could also say is back now right
09:28yeah well I mean
09:29we started with this joke of like
09:31you know we can give them race
09:32but not give them race
09:33and so like let's let them build race
09:35and so we started with
09:37giving them the tools to build race
09:38and that was our kind of
09:39our golden path
09:40to making minigame work was
09:42King of the Hill and race
09:43were our tent poles for everything
09:44we knew we couldn't
09:45we didn't have time for the arena team
09:46to build a full functioning race mode
09:48and so we kind of had been pitching
09:50this idea of minigame
09:51and it kind of grew and snowballed
09:53into like well actually
09:54we started borrowing the arena guys
09:56like we couldn't have done some of this
09:57without actually everybody
09:58kind of pitching in
09:59the arena guys
10:00gave us some dev resources
10:01so we could actually build
10:02the mode itself
10:03or like they helped fix bugs
10:05or fix welding issues that we had
10:06or write script functions that we needed
10:09and so we really focused hard
10:11on building race
10:12and what's cool is
10:13again much like the King of the Hill
10:14it's super versatile
10:15and it's pretty easy to drop into a level
10:17and then from there
10:18like you know
10:19customize it to your level
10:20and then what we keep expecting
10:22is that people are going to take it
10:23and make their own
10:24like customized versions of race
10:25make it really personal
10:26make your thing
10:27kind of stand out and special
10:28so it definitely was the gold bar
10:30and it was a lot of work
10:32to get it working
10:34but we're really proud of it
10:35and it's been really fun
10:36we have two maps
10:36that we're going to try to ship with this
10:37that we're really excited about
10:38well I know you're going to make
10:40a lot of fans happy
10:41when they can finally play some race again
10:43in Action Sack
10:44and of course
10:44make their own infinite variations of race
10:47and ramps
10:47and all sorts of cool stuff
10:48for sure
10:48so I cannot wait to play that
10:50but I think your favorite game
10:52if I'm not mistaken
10:52and what seems to be a studio favorite
10:54is something totally new
10:56that no one even knows
10:56that they want yet
10:57yeah we
10:58so when we did the summer update
11:00we added the golf pack
11:01kind of and all that stuff
11:02those classic pieces
11:03but as we did it
11:04we're like
11:04we really want to make a game mode out of this
11:06and we started working on minigame
11:07so we came up with the idea of battle golf
11:09and like wrote it up on a board
11:10in front of us
11:11and really a lot of the early testing
11:13and foundations for minigame
11:14were built in battle golf
11:15and it
11:17people swear when they play this game
11:18so it's often a good sign
11:19that it's fun
11:20and there's a lot of screaming
11:21when it goes on
11:22so I'm really excited
11:22to see what the public does with this
11:23there's two teams
11:24four players
11:25each team is trying to fight
11:26and get their golf club
11:27or their golf ball to the hole
11:29while they're beating each other
11:30with golf clubs
11:31and it changes every round
11:32it has like little
11:33almost putt-putt kind of qualities
11:34where it turns into tubes
11:36and there's landmines
11:37in different phases
11:38it's just
11:38I don't know
11:39it's really fun
11:39and it
11:40one of my favorite things
11:41that we've come out
11:42with this whole thing
11:42and yeah
11:43we're really hoping
11:44that the community
11:45latches onto this
11:45because we really want
11:47a whole like hopper
11:47of like 18 courses
11:49you know
11:49so we can play battle golf
11:51to no end
11:52well
11:52I've just barely played golf
11:54a little bit
11:54I cannot wait to play more
11:55it looks like a pretty wild time
11:57it's fun
11:57so I'm curious to see again
11:58what the fans
11:59they may even take golf
12:00and push it further
12:00than you've even imagined
12:01we hope so
12:02we want a whole
12:02we want hoppers
12:03full of battle golf
12:04that would be a good thing
12:05so of course
12:06not only can you build new stuff
12:08and find new ways to play
12:09but it's going to be easier
12:10than ever to find people
12:11to play with
12:12right
12:12with the introduction
12:13of what's essentially
12:14a custom game browser
12:15yeah
12:16there's a custom game browser
12:17that was added
12:18it was a really helpful thing
12:19that we didn't even plan on before
12:20but we brought it
12:21as towards the end
12:22it was
12:23a couple people got really excited
12:24about it
12:24because really we wanted
12:25to help the PC community
12:26kind of start to work together
12:28and get to play
12:28more than they could
12:29right now
12:30and so this is a great way
12:31for them to find a game
12:32and there's
12:33you can either find a map
12:34that you really like
12:35and then join
12:36like find a game from there
12:37or a game mode that you like
12:38through the file browser
12:39or you can actually go through
12:40just like let's find a game
12:41like what's popular
12:42what are people playing
12:43and actually join into a game
12:44from there
12:44so it's a really powerful tool
12:46to like connect the community
12:48together to play the game
12:49and all these kind of
12:50you know crazy modes
12:51that people are going to build
12:51with this stuff
12:52totally
12:52and it actually kind of
12:53connects the dots
12:54if you think about
12:54the Windows 10 PC experience
12:56for Halo 5
12:57which is totally free
12:58by the way
12:58not only do you have
12:59the Forge tool set
13:00but now that you can find
13:01people to play with
13:02you essentially have
13:04the entire sort of
13:05Halo Arena and Forge
13:06multiplayer suite
13:07fully playable
13:08for free on Windows 10
13:09yeah
13:09and it's huge
13:09and it's like
13:10it was kind of this perfect storm
13:11of all these things
13:12kind of lining up
13:13like getting the arena guys
13:14to help us out
13:15the mini game
13:16the mode pieces
13:17all these things
13:18just kind of landed
13:19nicely at the same time
13:20and so I think
13:21we have this great time
13:22we have you know
13:22probably one of the best
13:23Halo experiences
13:24available to you
13:25to play for free
13:25and or on your console
13:27as well
13:27awesome

13:50work out your design
13:51think about all your logic
13:52experiment with things
13:53but actually then
13:53when you want to build
13:54your game modes
13:55actually like write it out
13:56and then actually kind of
13:57plot it and build it
13:58it helped save me
14:00a lot of headache
14:01and hassle
14:01so we're going to
14:02release those design docs
14:03so that you guys can see
14:05how we learned how to
14:05build things
14:06awesome and then
14:06iterate iterate iterate
14:08of course
14:08and then using these new
14:09tools you can find
14:10people to come in
14:11and play test
14:12play test
14:12play test
14:13and that's going to
14:14help make it easier
14:14for us here at 343
14:16to take something
14:17and get it into
14:18matchmaking a lot faster
