01:25any argument about who the sabers best well dalene thompson i think are sort of i think you could
01:31make a case for either guy really but dalene i think is the that is the better player me too

05:34their favorite guy and he may not be as important as the the guys at the top of the lineup

05:43he serves a purpose and when the team is good all of that matters owen and i were talking about

05:48last night he stayed up through this through the second period he has to get here at five in the
05:53morning so he he pulled the chute there that poor kid and watched the third period but while we were
05:57watching the game malenstein whatever he ran someone over just did whatever malenstein malenstein was
06:03malensteining and owen said i really think i'm going to get a malenstein jersey and i said right away
06:09you know his contract's up after this year right he's like i don't think i care like i feel like

06:14going to want to remember him for this year what's he worth because he's doing all these cool things
06:21including making some pretty remarkable plays occasionally offensively not just you know
06:26running people over what's he i don't know i i don't know because i think he definitely if i'm
06:32not sure anybody doesn't this team he definitely qualifies as somebody who could be your favorite

07:27and blocking shots and like he's an animal and we love that guy hockey fans love that guy teams love
07:34that guy sure so i don't know like his contract's up i'm not even sure what he's getting paid now

10:28play for the buffalo sabers and look at it right zucker's got 20 goals and matters um
10:37malenstein quintessentially like that that is you know i said this maybe i don't know when they got in
10:44the race a couple of years ago greenway was healthy and playing and he's not the same player as malenstein
10:49but like it was close enough and i remember like my observation on him was like he does all the
10:55little stuff that only matters when the games really matter otherwise you're not gonna be he's
11:01not gonna be a lot of goals or assists or flashy but he's gonna make the right play he's gonna
11:06you know
11:06good stick whatever tough to play defender and malenstein is just all across the board all that
11:13stuff and if this team were languishing in 12th place and he could he could have the exact same
11:20stat line even the pretty goals and it'd be like yeah i don't care whatever right right it's just
11:25hockey in particular you need a certain level of your contender status for the guys that do that sort
11:32of job to rise above like yeah whatever get another one you know he's his contract's done to sign
11:41another one uh same money just go find a comparable player and as i said you couldn't find a comparable
11:46player but you start once you've got like a guy especially in that role that's doing it really
11:52well provided somebody doesn't want to pay him there's a guy is it blake coleman there's a there's
11:59like a role-playing guy that i think is on calgary now that maybe was on tampa when they won
12:04and he got
12:05like six for 30 or something in free agency and he's never ever ever ever ever ever come close to
12:11living up to it los malenstein doesn't get that offer you can probably keep him for a reasonable
12:18amount of money i would hope maybe he could be the new gergensons isn't gergensons kind of that yes
12:24he would do occasional things and right fabric of the team matters when your team is good
12:30everybody could have seen what his value would have been to the sabers but it got so to the point
12:39that we just all hated all of them for it like you know like he became was this two years
12:46ago now yeah
12:46he became a guy that the gm at the time almost broke into tears talking about in terms of his
12:55loyalty and
12:56devotion to the sabers and when as far as it seemed to hold against anybody who criticized
13:02yeah the sabers for having gergenson and we're out here going because that was us
13:06we're out here going what what yeah does it it doesn't matter right if he's he's a great leader
13:13and really good for culture and all this stuff so what what is it amounting to like you're still in
13:19last
13:19so yeah i don't i you know i that doesn't make what you how you defended him untrue it just
13:25isn't
13:25amounting to anything so let's all just move on yeah so move on for the sake of moving on right
13:31because he has he had become yeah a picture of the losing yes you know absolutely and you know
13:38dolly maybe almost became that eight years he was too good to think of in that sort of lesser context

13:46this is the best well i go ahead i was just gonna say the sabers it's i've said it before
13:53we've
13:54talked about it the sabers have never had a team like this they've had good teams this is a good
14:00team this is on the list we'll see what happens they've never am i wrong like they've never had a
14:07team like this that defensively is just like sort of really tough to penetrate and exploit
14:21and even our favorite saber teams ever they all had that we almost a weakness if not not a strength
14:28i mean this team has it as a strength and they have games where they don't really need to score
14:34damn that game last night was one nothing for two hours and i i never i'm looking and made some
14:42great saves and they don't have a number one goalie but he wasn't it wasn't an onslaught you
14:49know it wasn't like they weren't sloppy necessarily in front of him it was like all great save and then
14:56the play's over one of the things that was so great about how well he played is how much the
15:01puck
15:02sort of seemed to stick to him like even if it hit him and he didn't have it like frozen
15:06to his body
15:07it was right in front of him and the gloves right on it and like that that must happen a
15:11half a dozen
15:11times yeah and that game great chance puck hits him frozen which is i mean that that's great and
15:19that's a credit to them defensively that guys weren't available to get those rebounds before he
15:23could corral them it's like i want to say he was maybe the best game he's played in maybe a
15:30long time
15:30i just thought there were a number of really really high level saves but he wasn't under siege
15:37like they they sort of had the game in control the whole time and it's one nothing and you're not
15:43like i don't know speaking for myself i'm not nervous i'm just watching them play and going like
15:50yeah they could probably win this game one nothing maybe they'll get a late one and they
15:54ended up getting an empty netter um but i can't admit to if going that to going that far last

16:00oh i made it sounds like we both watched i made it i this when you started like all these

16:07levels of like you're unlocking achievement badges right it wasn't even hard to stay up to watch that
16:15game no i i tricked i tricked myself and i may do this thursday because i had things to do

16:21and i i'm i get in a rut i like to just go home and i got a game at
16:25seven o'clock i'm gonna turn it
16:26on whether it's a sabers or not and like that's my night i'll have some dinner and watch the game

16:32i go to bed last night i was out until like 9 30 and so everything was just pushed back
16:39a couple of
16:39hours and it worked great like i'm in my living room at 10 15 i had i ate some dinner
16:45i'm gonna go grab
16:46a guitar and play the game and i just sat there next thing i knew it was midnight the guy
16:50i never felt
16:51like oh god i'm in danger of falling asleep here and the team does have a central part in that

16:58they're so good and fun to watch that i didn't even feel i didn't feel like oh god it's midnight

18:25first round different possible matchups and that and i gotta think more and more fans
18:31every day every win feel comfortable doing that because not everybody is the type to want to do
18:38that until it's like official but it's just one more step tampa wins too yep pretty easily a couple
18:47of empty net goals or at least one five points for your buddy kucherov he has carolina loses i saved

19:03game span since lemieux had like 100 and something back in 94 95 or something it's insane what kucherov is
19:10doing so yeah i mean he's he's continuing to just blast off like crazy there's a there's a badge
19:16unlocked carolina mattering on the out of town score for the first time to me anyway right right
19:25tied with carolina for the top spot in the eastern conference they have a game in hand so points

20:43he austin matthews no but i mean he just he plays the game the right way and a great player

20:5805 06 season i had something a parallel that was really interesting um after that uh uh lightning
21:05game a couple couple weeks ago it was actually about 20 years ago to the day uh march 9th the
21:10sabers beat the tampa bay lightning eight five um into that march of 2006 i thought that was pretty
21:18interesting and um you know i think uh this team you know also i guess it it's probably been said
21:26but
21:26lindy ruff lindy ruff deserves a lot of credit for this team and uh just what he means for this
21:31organization and the community of buffalo so i guess those are the three things i want to talk

22:11as much as we all were convinced when they started this winning streak that when they got home on that
22:16from that road trip out to western canada that change was coming like adams was going to be
22:21removed that ruff was there was a lot of reported turmoil about him too not that he was going to

22:29taken out back necessarily but that he might be moved out of head coach bumped upstairs something
22:35like that and they got hot and it just never happened going a long way just to say the opposite
22:43of getting the stink on him is what is happening now it adds to how this feels if you if

22:50through his first tenure as the coach or even you're old enough like we are to remember him even as

22:56player and a captain on this team him being the coach of this team there's no other person that could
23:02be the coach that would mean as much it just we're tied to him buffalo hockey like lindy ruff is
23:10absolutely buffalo hockey he grew up here as a young man playing coached all of it and to have
23:17him now at the helm of a team that's doing this it's there's it just couldn't be better
