00:00With a nationwide transport strike looming, authorities are pulling out all the stops to keep commuters from being left in
00:06the lurch.
00:07The Philippine National Police says security, monitoring, and free ride assistance are in place as groups like Piston push through
00:15with protests over rising fuel costs.
00:18Our JM Thompson tells us more.
00:21Security measures of the Philippine National Police, or PNP, are all set for the nationwide transport strike scheduled tomorrow.
00:30March 19, among those set to join the transport strike is the Group Piston.
00:34This is said to be their response to the rising fuel prices due to the continuing tensions in the Middle
00:40East.
00:40According to Piston National President Modi Floranda, the strike will cover not only Metro Manila, but also other parts of
00:48the country.
00:49According to PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencho Nartates Jr., local police commanders have already intensified monitoring
00:57to identify areas that may be affected and to immediately implement necessary measures to protect the interest of commuters and
01:06those who will not join the strike.
01:32The PNP chief appealed to organizers of the protest actions to lead orderly demonstrations
01:38to avoid the tension between protesters, commuters, and the police.
01:57At the same time, the PNP assured the implementation of maximum tolerance
02:02for those who will conduct protest actions.
02:06Meanwhile, the PNP has further strengthened measures to protect the public
02:10against scammers in line with the distribution of government fuel subsidies.
02:15This includes the deployment of personnel in distribution sites to ensure security
02:21and prevent scams using both digital and physical methods of payout.
02:26The PNP chief also urged the public to remain vigilant against scam operations.
