00:00Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Arachi calls for a new international framework
00:04to govern the Strait of Hormuz once the current conflict comes to an end.
00:09In an interview with Al Jazeera, he says any future system must include clear regulations
00:14that protect the interests of Iran and neighbouring countries.
00:21He said countries on both sides of the strait should jointly develop the new protocol
00:26as they are the primary stakeholders to ensure long-term, peaceful transit
00:31to one of the world's most critical waterways.
00:33The Strait of Hormuz is currently recognised as an international strait under maritime law,
00:38despite lying within the territorial waters of both Iran and Oman.
00:42It is governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,
00:46which guarantees the right of navigation.
00:49However, since the conflict began, Iran has asserted control over the strait
00:53through military presence and threats that influence the movement of ships,
00:57which have disrupted global energy flows and economic stability across international markets.
