00:00I voted against the bill after a lot of soul-searching so I feel relieved I had
00:05very profound concerns about the bill but there's no sense of celebration or
00:10pleasure I am aware that many people will be deeply disappointed at the
00:15outcome tonight I don't think this was ever an issue that was you know black
00:19and white that had an easy answer either way every MSP has thought about these
00:24issues really deeply for me the hurdle I could never get over was this concern
00:29about internalized coercion and the possibility that even if it's just a
00:37few people feel a pressure to exercise the right to die because they feel they
00:42are a burden on their families and they don't want to put their families through
00:46the difficulty of of their death and I think if that happens even in a small
00:52number of cases what is intended as a right to die there is a danger it becomes
00:58a duty to die and that was the issue I had other concerns as well but that's
01:02the issue fundamentally I could not get over in my mind
