00:04Comeмо inizio a playstation live from E3, I'm Meredith Mollinari, joined by Ryan Clements,
00:09and we've got James Marsden and Dave Gabriel here from Future Lab talk about Tiny Tracks.
00:14Now I just played the demo here at the booth in VR and I have so many things that I'd
00:19love to say about it,
00:19but why don't you first give us a quick little explanation about what the game's all about?
00:23Okay, so everyone knows slot car racing, they grew up with it as a kid,
00:52I'm so excited to see you play this
00:54because I told the guy who was giving me the demo
00:57I was like, just so you know
00:58I am the world's worst video game driver
01:00and he's like, don't worry, you're going to be fine
01:02and I had a blast
01:03so much detail in this game
01:06I love that you can look around inside of here
01:08if you actually look down, you can see all the cars
01:10over there, a little car over there
01:11you can see some of your other levels right there
01:14you're in this kid's room
01:15yeah, it's like a kid's room is kind of decked out
01:18as a garage
01:19loads of sketches on the side of how to make rockets
01:21and things like that
01:22all the stickers, I love it
01:23now who on the team is a parent
01:25that is giving the real-time feedback
01:27on what an 8-year-old wants
01:30anybody?
01:31no, not really
01:33we're all just too young for that
01:35you're a bunch of kids
01:35no, you can actually pick whichever car you want here
01:38you've got a couple different cars you can switch through
01:39and then you can change the color
01:41is there one car that people choose all the time
01:44it's the pink camper, yeah
01:45really?
01:46yeah
01:47I went with the yellow Roadster
01:51what kind of, you know, brought all this about
01:53like, why did you guys want to start working in the VR space?
01:56because it's obviously an emergent technology
01:59it's very difficult, I would say
02:01but, you know, there's so much potential here
02:03yeah, it is a challenge
02:05we've been working with PlayStation as a partner
02:07for a number of years now
02:09supporting all the new platforms
02:11thank you for that, by the way
02:12you're welcome
02:15so, and Sony came to us and said
02:16you know, we've got a window of opportunity to pitch a VR game
02:20what do you want to make?
02:21and we tried a few ideas
02:24but we were
02:24the design team was very busy on another project
02:27and Dave was our QA
02:28and production assistant at that time
02:30so we loaded them up with hardware
02:32and gave them a, you know
02:35limitless kind of funds to buy all the VR games
02:37to try and work out what VR was
02:39and he figured out that
02:42the stuff that works the best in these early days
02:44is to sit the player still and bring the action to them
02:47and so
02:48he bought a load of old school toys that he grew up with
02:51like Scootable Scramble, if you remember that
02:53and we just tried to think of
02:55yeah
02:58small areas of gameplay
02:59where you don't need to move around much
03:01and it became very obvious
03:02pretty early on that
03:05like Hot Wheels, Scalextric
03:08micro-machines would be a perfect fit
03:11and thus the slot car racing
03:12exactly
03:13nice tracks
03:13now when I was playing the demo
03:15what I was really impressed by is
03:16how delicate the controls really are
03:19you know, you think like
03:20oh, there's no brake
03:21you're just going to go
03:22hit accelerate
03:22just all around the track
03:24but you really have to watch
03:25I can see on that wheel that he had
03:27where it goes red and green
03:28for your steering
03:29that's right
03:29because that way you don't get the drift
03:30and that's what you want
03:32is to get that
03:32so you can go around the corners
03:33yeah, so we actually tried early on
03:35to do a direct simulation
03:37of Scalextric or Carrera
03:40where you go too fast
03:42and your car just flies off the track
03:43what we found is
03:45there's something that happens
03:46in the real world
03:47that you can't mimic
03:48in a virtual environment
03:49that threshold for success and failure
03:53people just didn't get it
03:54it was either felt too hard
03:56or not hard enough
03:57okay
03:57and now you're underwater
04:00oh, so this is the level
04:01that I played
04:02yeah, so you can actually lean forward
04:04and duck your head underwater
04:05and the audio changes
04:06yeah, and when you do that
04:07the music actually stops
04:08because you're underwater
04:09are you kidding me?
04:11no, all the little details
04:12are so well done
04:14see, so you see how it's green right there
04:16so that's when he's steering
04:16and if he was steering badly
04:18it would go red
04:18so that's kind of how you gauge
04:20ah
04:21ah
04:22there's a nice skill envelope there
04:23where you learn the track
04:25and you learn the kind of muscle memory
04:27to get around each track
04:28each corner, sorry
04:29and how about
04:31where did you guys come up
04:32with some of the ideas
04:33for the environments
04:33because obviously
04:34with a slot car
04:35you know, based game
04:37so much of it relies
04:38on the imaginative tracks
04:40and the spectacle
04:41of what you're seeing
04:42well, um
04:43VR is quite
04:44well, still very new
04:45to a lot of people
04:45and putting on the headset
04:47it can be quite an isolating experience
04:49and so we wanted to make sure
04:51that all the environments
04:52evoked a kind of
04:53an emotion of comfort
04:54and excitement
04:55and so we start with tropical
04:57which is like escapism
04:58sunny day
05:00waves lapping at the shore
05:01and birds tweeting
05:03and stuff like that
05:04and then we move on
05:05to the next environment
05:06which is fire and ice
05:07and so you're in a frozen tundra
05:10but there are pockets of lava
05:12and campfires
05:13and things like that
05:14that make you feel
05:15kind of cozy
05:15you can get your head
05:18your head close to the flames
05:19and you know
05:20hopefully feel that comfort
05:21and then finally
05:22the final environment
05:23is set and outer space
05:25and we love sci-fi
05:26future lab
05:27and so it's kind of
05:28no, really?
05:29I wouldn't have known
05:30based on your previous work
05:32yeah, so here's the ice tundra
05:34but there are small flames
05:35dotted around
05:39how many tracks are there total?
05:42there's a total of 12 tracks
05:43over three different environments
05:44awesome
05:45I love it
05:46and then tell me a little bit
05:47about how you're doing
05:49you know, either solo
05:50or multiplayer play
05:51I mean, is this all
05:52a solo experience?
05:53are you guys inviting
05:53other players in here?
05:54yeah, it's up to four players online
05:56four players online?
05:57so you can play the entire game
05:58single player
05:59against AI
06:00or invite friends to play
06:01great
06:02how about modes?
06:03is there like a career?
06:04is there a challenge mode?
06:06how are you guys staging that?
06:07there are single races
06:09that you can just pick
06:10and invite friends in to play
06:11across all the different environments
06:13and then there are cups
06:14there's a cup for each environment
06:16and then there's a star cup
06:17that picks our favorite tracks
06:19from each environment
06:20because you're the stars
06:22I guess so
06:23I mean
06:23now, you were telling us
06:25a little bit about
06:25what you guys did
06:26with the trailer
06:27oh, yes
06:29go ahead
06:29share that story with us
06:31can we put that out there?
06:33yep, so
06:34a few weeks ago
06:35we did the announced trailer
06:36on PlayStation Blog
06:38and
06:39thanks for that too
06:40yeah, yeah
06:41the exclusives all the way
06:42and
06:43we wanted to try
06:45and communicate
06:45that you
06:46play as a full-size adult
06:48in a tiny world
06:50with tiny cars
06:51and tiny tracks
06:54and it doesn't come across
06:55in a video
06:56so we put our team in
06:59so those
07:00so those
07:01folks in the trailer
07:02are our development team
07:05and
07:06the comments on YouTube
07:07are like
07:08who are these muppets
07:09that they got
07:09to star in it
07:11like
07:11the game looks cool
07:12but they need a new ad agency
07:14and
07:14it's a typical British sense of humor
07:16not
07:17going across the pond
07:18because
07:18you know
07:19what we want
07:20the reason we did it
07:21is to poke fun
07:22ad agency actors
07:24so our expressions
07:26are really really
07:27over the top
07:27like
07:27whoa
07:28I'm having an amazing time
07:30you know
07:30holding a controller
07:31all wrong
07:32when it turned off
07:33you know
07:34so all those things
07:35were being
07:36pulled out
07:38on the YouTube comments
07:39we were like
07:40oh they just didn't get it
07:41are you telling me
07:42that YouTube comments
07:43weren't super nice
07:44what?
07:45yeah
07:45what a surprise
07:46I guess we're just green
07:47yeah
07:49future lab has a lot of fans
07:50out there though too
07:51and I mean
07:51especially with your previous works
07:53on PlayStation
07:54now that you have tiny tracks
07:56in the works
07:57is there any particular lessons
07:59your team has taken
08:00from your former games
08:01the things that you
08:02you know
08:03you guys do a lot
08:04of very fast action
08:05arcade style gameplay
08:06what are you bringing
08:07into this
08:08that really helped you
08:09develop in this new space
08:12so
08:13it's very important for us
08:14to create a game
08:15that you can replay
08:17there's a lot of VR experiences
08:18that are amazing
08:19and mind-blowing
08:20and then they're done
08:21so we really wanted
08:22a replayable game
08:24that you could become
08:24better at over time
08:26and rhythm is a key component
08:28of all of our games
08:29and so we wanted to find
08:30a rhythm in the driving
08:32and that breaks down
08:33into
08:33you manage your boost
08:36by recharging
08:37by drifting
08:38so you drift into a sweet spot
08:40as you can see Dave
08:41is kind of picking a sweet spot
08:43on this HUD item
08:44and when that happens
08:46your boost recharges
08:47so you use boost on straights
08:49and then you drift around corners
08:51and that
08:51you just
08:52once you've learned the track
08:53it feels very rhythmical
08:54and natural
08:55and we've had a few
08:57a few journalists play
08:58and a few fans play
08:59and they say
09:00it feels like velocity
09:02but racing
09:03so that feels great
09:04great
09:05there you go
09:06you guys always approach it
09:06from a third person perspective
09:08or was there any thought
09:09of being
09:09because so many VR games
09:10you have a first person
09:11especially racing games
09:12you can kind of see it
09:13from back
09:13or you can switch
09:14to the driver's seat
09:14right
09:15no we've
09:16in our early exploration
09:18of what makes VR interesting
09:21the things that really
09:22worked for us
09:23were stationary experiences
09:26where the action comes to you
09:28and you know
09:30it's no secret
09:31that some people feel
09:32motion sickness in VR
09:33and we thought
09:34we're a small team of nine
09:35we're not going to try
09:36and solve that problem
09:38pick your battles
09:39pick your battles
09:41such an important refrain
09:42pick your battles
09:44I love it
09:45that's all I have
09:46Meredith
09:47that's awesome
09:47Dave thank you so much
09:48for sharing that with us
09:50thanks Dave
09:50thanks for showing me
09:51how the game is supposed
09:52to be driven
09:52I had a blast playing it
09:54even though
09:54I definitely was not
09:55coming in first
09:57but it was great
09:57Dave you're still on stage
09:59can you believe it
10:00you were never in those worlds
10:02they are so believable
10:06that's awesome
10:06well thank you guys so much
10:07any other things
10:08you want to share
10:08about Tiny Tracks
10:09with our viewers
