The Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), also known as the Biafran War, was fought between the government of Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra. The conflict began after political tensions and ethnic violence led the southeastern region to declare independence as the Republic of Biafra. The war became one of the most devastating conflicts in modern African history, causing widespread famine and humanitarian crisis before ending with the reintegration of Biafra into Nigeria in 1970.
