00:03In una città in the south of France,
00:05where old architecture mingles with modern convenience,
00:09there's a group of people dedicated to creating something completely new.
00:14It's the Beyond Good & Evil 2 team at Ubisoft Montpellier,
00:18and though they've been working on their space pirate epic for some time now,
00:22things have heated up significantly since their dramatic E3 announcement.
00:26Our goal now is to keep this very hot, you know, and still continue cooking,
00:33and really making it more polished and final, you know, with all the ingredients.
00:39Our biggest mission when we came back to E3 was actually communicating
00:42all this positive energy, positive feedback we got.
00:46We really wanted the team to understand that they want to play it,
00:49and they expect something really great.
00:51And we are really focusing on what are your motivations into the game.
00:55Something that I tell the team is, okay, we decided we were going to make a space pirate game,
01:00so everything that a pirate is doing in the mythology of pirates,
01:05you put space in front of it, and we do it in the game.
01:08Boarding, I want space boardings.
01:10Treasure hunt, I want space treasure hunt.
01:12We are a captain, a pirate captain, but you have a crew,
01:16and the whole game is really based on how we make the relationship interesting.
01:21We know that the heart of the story is going to be carried by our officers,
01:26and then we'll need to recruit crew members.
01:29We are thinking about the background of the characters, the background of the world.
01:33Yes, it's really about people into a complex and mysterious world.
01:38I'm writing now, so I'm sort of like throwing out ideas and basically nourishing the team and Michel
01:43with as many possibilities as we can, until with the artists that we've been working very closely with
01:49to create the characterizations, that this all sort of comes together, and we go,
01:52oh yeah, of course that's the story. It could never have been anything else.
01:55So that's really what we're working with.
01:58We are working on the ships, on the spaceships, actually.
02:01So it runs from the small tuk-tuk and motors, what we call speeders,
02:05to the big mother ship, which is 500 meters big.
02:10We've got a huge ship that's inspired from the shape of a whale.
02:16And around it, we make small objects that could be gulls, for example, or insects.
02:23It can be like a 17th century ship riding through the seas with a gull flying.
02:32These kind of pictures inspire us the way we treat the mechanics, for example.
02:38Now keep in mind that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in the conception phase,
02:43a time when most games keep their cards close to the vest.
02:46But this team is laying them out on the table,
02:49because they want you to be a part of the process through the Space Monkey program.
02:53The goal of the Space Monkey program is to have a mutual inspiration.
02:57We've been doing blog posts where we really take a lot of time with the team,
03:03sit down and think of what kind of questions, what do we want to know from our fans.
03:08Right now it's just the beginning, so it's more like we are triggering subject discussions and its comments,
03:14but we want to move way beyond this, where we would love people to come into the studio
03:19and discuss interesting subjects.
03:22Whether we achieve this kind of transparency that will allow the community to see,
03:27OK, this is the direction they're going.
03:30And if that changes at some point, then we can say, OK, this is why it happened.
03:35We told you this.
03:36This is why the change happened.
03:38And this is where we're going.
03:40At some point, they can be considered a part of the developers.
03:43So there's not so much difference.
03:45That's why we want to blend the frontier.
03:50We want to blur the lines between developers and passionate people,
03:55because they have to be passionate people.
04:00We know that the development is taking a long time.
04:03We don't say no.
04:04We say yes to giant spaceship, a lot of friends into the spaceship,
04:09online, adventures, the solo experience also, you know, all these things.
04:14We say, yes, we can make it.
04:16We can connect all the things all together.
04:19But nobody has ever made this kind of thing in a video game.
04:23So since if we know, you know, the pressure and good pressure is still on,
04:28which is good.
04:30The creation of Beyond Good and Evil 2 is well on its way,
04:34but there's still a long way to go.
