00:04Quando sei un figlio
00:05e sei stai con figure
00:08e sei immaginato
00:09che sei un character
00:11da un gioco in un film,
00:12hai una magia speciale che hai da childe
00:16che è stato un punto
00:17di cui ho potuto veramente applicare
00:19è un'animazione di stop motion.
00:21È così interessante
00:23vedere i puppetti che ho fatto
00:25che sono vivi.
00:27I know exactly
00:29how it happens, I still can't believe it.
00:34My role
00:35at Blizzard is I'm a CG animator.
00:37Every day I go to work and I am
00:39telling stories for all the different titles.
00:41Blizzard Academy contacted
00:43me and they're like, hey, people have been asking for a
00:45stop motion class forever here at Blizzard.
00:47Would you be interested in teaching it? And I'm like,
00:49yeah, that'd be awesome. Also, what an
00:51excuse I can use
00:53to finally bring one of these things to life.
00:55I had just received the
00:57Overwatch Collector's Edition
00:58and it comes with this beautiful
01:00Soldier 76 statue.
01:02I hate sitting on the sidelines.
01:04And the story basically came from
01:06walking around this campus at night,
01:08seeing amazing statues, but the lights are off
01:11because not many people are in there.
01:12But it felt like, these statues come to life
01:15at night. I bet you they play Overwatch.
01:17And I thought that would be the idea for
01:19the test that I want to show in class.
01:22That video took over
01:23three and a half weeks, four weeks,
01:25but I was working nonstop.
01:32After showing the Overwatch team,
01:34they said, okay, come up with some ideas
01:36for these specific events
01:37and we'll see if something lands.
01:39The Overwatch anniversary popped out at me
01:42for sure because it just seemed so celebratory.
01:45The idea of puppets, like, coming to life
01:48and being excited about their anniversary
01:50was really fun to me.
01:51Do you know what today is?
01:53Leave me alone.
01:55Trace and Bake was made by me
01:57and my wife, Shell, and a few of our friends.
02:01It was like a five-person team.
02:02Shell handled the sets and the puppets
02:04and I handled the animation and the directing,
02:07the storyboards and stuff like that.
02:10Oh, blimey.
02:12I got it!
02:13First, there's the concept,
02:14and we loved that part.
02:16It's really fun working together.
02:18We just brainstormed and drew some sketches
02:20and came up with some ideas.
02:22And then there's making storyboards
02:25or an animatic for it.
02:26We had a rough edit, but then we brought in
02:28an editor from Blizzard, Jake Patton,
02:30and he did a really great take at it
02:32and brought a lot of humor to it.
02:34Oops! Silly mate!
02:36And then we start doing research for the puppets.
02:40Like, each puppet has its own unique challenges,
02:42so we have research to figure out how to make hoods
02:45or how to make capes or how to paint.
02:47And then we make the molds
02:49and we do the silicone paint.
02:52We make the armatures.
02:54We put it all together, pull it out,
02:56and then there's a seaming process
02:58because the puppets will have a line
02:59where the molds met.
03:00Wow, this is a beautiful, beautiful pull.
03:04Yes, it is.
03:06We built this in our garage,
03:08in our living room, in our kitchen,
03:10on the front porch, in the back deck.
03:13Our house has been trace and bake the last 12 weeks.
03:17We have two very different sets in this film.
03:21and we wanted a really cool gamer's desk
03:24than a very normal suburban kitchen.
03:27Okay, so we're transforming this corner of our garage into a kitchen.
03:30Shell built this amazing kitchen,
03:33and these are totally fake.
03:35These walls all come off so I can get under there.
03:37So I'll go through and drill actual holes in the set.
03:41Shell puts all these little bolts
03:43in all of the toes of the characters.
03:45It will allow her to balance and stand
03:48in whole different unique poses.
03:51Tracer's blink was an actual blue medical tube.
03:54We cut him into little short pieces
03:55that we could stop-motion replace.
03:57All the candles are wired to the dimmer.
03:59So when Justin's animating,
04:00he can turn them on high
04:01and then turn them down for the next frame
04:03and then high for the frame after that,
04:04so they flicker.
04:06Tracer was spinning around the cake making it,
04:09and we had this idea after the very end
04:11she was just going to launch up
04:13and throw a candle down,
04:14and we said,
04:15why don't we have her launch all the way up
04:17to the front of the camera,
04:18and then she'll throw it and then zip out.
04:21After the animation,
04:22there's giving the shots to our compositor,
04:25Cam Lieberg, who's been wonderful,
04:27and he delivers the shots off to Blizzard,
04:29and then we get to put a big D
04:30on our tiny little big board
04:33that says that shot's delivered.
04:35Ooh, not bad.
04:38I saw that!
04:40My personal goal from the very beginning of this
04:43is to pay respects
04:46to these amazing artists of Blizzard.
04:48To do justice to these amazing characters
04:51that clearly people put so much love into creating.
04:54The worlds we create are so much larger than just games.
04:57I do think we'll be doing more of this in the future.
05:01Happy anniversary, Overwatch!
05:04Are you kidding me?
05:17Hey, good show, reefer.
05:19Time to get back in the box.
05:22Oh, come on, man.
05:26Ha-ha!
05:28Oh!
05:29Dude!
05:36Yeah, gee!
05:37I'm going to go,
05:37we won.
05:37I got to go.
05:38Oh!
05:39You know,
05:39the world's world,
05:39I'm so sorry,
05:40but we're still on a plane?
05:40We're all faced with the world.
