00:32Lord, I know the coming days are going to be hard for me.
00:36Yasmin, we've got two less for lunch.
00:38Give me the strength to face them.
00:41And Winston, well, Winston's not feeling...
00:44You're by my side.
00:45I still made as much green fig salad as usual.
00:48Always gets eaten.
00:49Oh, Sylvie sweetheart, I'm so sorry.
00:53We didn't disturb you, did we?
00:55No, just saying a quick prayer.
00:56Oh, please don't tell me you've got the whole church ready on your own.
01:00I don't mind. I enjoy it.
01:02Yeah, but I told him to be here to help.
01:16So, I think I know what you're going to say.
01:18Despite me specifically asking you...
01:21To arrive early and help Mrs. Godwin with the church.
01:24I'm sorry, I promise it will never happen again.
01:28It will.
01:28I mean, yes, it's very probable.
01:30So, are you going to make it to the service?
01:38Well, I would have tried my best.
01:42Cha-cha.
02:07Cha-cha.
02:15Down by the riverside
02:18Down by the riverside
02:20Down by the riverside
02:23Down by the riverside
02:28Down by the riverside
02:32I ain't gonna study one no more
02:34I'm gonna pray in the morning for you.
02:37Bye.
02:40I'm going to nip home and grab the food.
02:43Is Seb still not here?
02:45You're gonna be okay setting up for lunch?
02:47I'll be fine.
02:49Okay.
02:53Today's collection, Pastor.
02:55I'll go and finish tidy up in here
02:57then I'll head over to your place.
02:59I'll see you soon, Sylvie.
03:17Hello?
03:22Hello?
03:25Is somebody there?
03:36Okay, everybody.
03:37Come and sit down.
03:41Oh, that boy has a sixth sense.
03:43You can't get him to come to church on time, but dish up some food and there he is.
03:48What a feast.
03:49Looks like a time did just right.
03:51Can't wait to dig in.
03:52I'm dead for hungry.
03:54Miss Celie.
03:55Mama.
03:56Y'all good?
03:58Nice to see you, Seb.
03:59Right, come everybody.
04:00Sit down.
04:03Wait.
04:04Sylvie's not here.
04:06Don't tell me she's still at the church.
04:10Yes, sir.
04:10You look good?
04:11Yes, sir.
04:40You look good.
04:41Okay, you look good.
05:00I'm done.
05:01You look good Bu
05:02You look good.
05:06You look good.
05:08What are you doing?
05:08good afternoon we don't often see you here on your own yeah well the
05:15Commissioner has been encouraging me to put myself out more and you've got to
05:20do what the big man says right so I thought I'd try my hand with the
05:23dominoes crowd good for you I'll introduce you
05:29it's a lot noisier than how they play back up I mean back there it's it's
05:34that's more sedate unless some passionate exactly there so often the way
05:39with the English everyone this is Mervyn he was looking to play Oscar maybe you
05:50could play with me nice to meet you Oscar nice to meet you um be gentle with me
05:58yeah it's been a while you're not working today we are no I'm afraid got
06:06an accidental death coroner is away at the moment so we have to go and sign off on
06:11it Mervyn's here it was just about to play his first I mean this game on the
06:21island well okay then nice one mate we should have a rematch sometime yeah by
06:30the 12th or never it's not over ready the man totally thrashed me I was only
06:35gone a few moments it's like a hurricane never seen anything like it DS Thomas
06:43please tell me we've got a new case to deal with because that was genuinely
06:46humiliating we have by st. Vincent's church which is Seb's mother's church he
06:53was the one that called it in
06:58see you Oscar English
07:05victim named Sylvia Godwin she was 85 years old god bless her I can't believe she's
07:11gone just like that did you know her well since I was a kid she was like
07:16auntie to me you know sorry mate so was she alone when it happened she stayed
07:23behind after service to tidy up looks like she was dusting the cross and
07:27that's that footing and pulled it down with her
07:29poor woman paramedics reckon she bangs her head when she landed caused an injury to
07:34the brain and you found their body officer Rose mm-hmm me and my mama and
07:41miss Celia she's the head mistress at the church primary school down the road he's
07:45Godwin something isn't right it's not adding up this whole scene in front of it
07:52it's just not adding up for me it's her shoes what's wrong with her shoes there's
07:59nothing wrong with her shoes per se they're nice enough Sunday best shoes got
08:05bit of a heel on them about two inches I reckon the thing is most people if
08:10they're gonna climb up on a chair to do some dusting and they're wearing heels
08:14they're gonna remove them beforehand to be more sure-footed safety first and all
08:19that and 85 years old I think mrs. Godwin here will be even more likely to do
08:25that than than anyone younger or more agile so what are you suggesting that she
08:30didn't climb up on the chair no she didn't and if she didn't climb up on the
08:37chair she didn't fall from the chair and if she didn't fall from the chair she
08:41didn't bang her head from falling and if she didn't bang her head from falling then
08:45what did actually happen here you think it's suspicious I think we've been sold
08:50a lie what that's not possible why not because the church was all locked up from
08:56the inside so nobody could get in or out show me so when we got here we went to the
09:04back entrance it's what that won't go in the keys in on the other side so we came
09:16around to the front entrance to the same situation
09:18let me see there's a key in here too so I had to bust the door open
09:29see whose keys there mrs. Godwin's she usually locks the door and she's tidying up so nobody bothers
09:35her show me the back door
09:40is this also the victim's key no that's from the hook over there sir I don't know how it got
09:46in this
09:46door could someone have been hiding in here while you're in there no way as soon as I found her
09:54I saw
09:54my phone had no juice I came straight in here and called the ambulance I'm telling you both doors were
09:59locked on the inside if someone killed mrs. Godwin and staged a crime scene then how did
10:07they manage to get out
10:12no that just can't be there is no reason anybody would want to do that to Sylvie
10:18she's right it's crazy you think it is suspicious well can you tell us a little
10:22more about her did mrs. Godwin have any family was she married was but he passed away when was it
10:28now it was 2017 I officiated the funeral I mean you want to know about Sylvie's life it was this
10:35church this church was her family that's the truth she had been coming to St Vincent since before I was
10:43born she was christened here she got married here she and she never missed a single Sunday service in all
10:52of her life pasta I came straight over thank you for coming Hector oh I called Hector and told him
11:02the
11:02news he was very close to Sylvie she was his school teacher many years ago Hector my eyes
11:10dear Wilson yes Thomas so mrs. Godwin was a teacher St Vincent primary school I took over from her as
11:22headmistress when she retired
11:24and you kept in touch with her always the things she did for me as a kid above and beyond
11:30you know
11:35in what way kept an eye on me because my parents didn't Sylvie and Walter her husband they never
11:45had kids themselves Hector met the world tour that's why this just can't be true that woman had nothing but
11:52good in her well if you think of anything you let us know yeah you can go and rest your
12:15feet clear all
12:17this up around to make your herbal tea after a day like today all I want is for you to
12:23pour me a
12:23wrong a large one all right Christmas from coming out early this year Seb your inspector is he usually
12:35right about this kind of thing 99.9% of the time so someone did murder Sylvie but who I
12:45don't know but couldn't have been
12:47anybody at the church right so maybe Sylvie had things going on in her life that we don't know about
12:56well mom I promise you whatever it is we'll figure it out I know this hasn't played out how we
13:08expected
13:08but I had to do what I had to do no I'm not coming back yet not until I've got
13:15what I came for
13:32finish your breakfast
13:42you're welcome
13:55commissioner you made me jump good morning inspector good morning this arrived for me in the morning post
14:05it's from your victim
14:10mrs godwin saw me on the local news covering the recent police initiative event she said
14:17she could tell I wanted to put things right and that's what she also needed to do right or wrong
14:25she didn't say what that was only that whatever it was was of a criminal nature and had something
14:33to do with st vincent's church there is a dark secret that has been buried for too long
14:38and it's time the truth came out
14:43it was posted on saturday morning
14:4824 hours later she was dead
14:54well this gets more interesting by the minute
14:56how much is in mrs. boardroom's bank account
14:58two million four hundred and sixty three thousand dollars
15:04what you sure about that like seriously seriously
15:08well new primary school head teachers earn so much
15:12i requested statements that go further back all i have is the last five years and the money was
15:17already in the account the victim's husband walter is it what did he do for a living mr walter godwin
15:22he was a caretaker at the same school that mrs godwin worked at i think that's where they first met
15:27so suddenly to be his money hmm do we know anything about her family yeah mrs godwin told me once
15:33her parents were farmers they definitely weren't rich so she didn't inherit it could the money have
15:39something to do with the crime she talks about in this letter the one connected to st vincent's
15:43officer rose give your mom a call see if it sparks a memory or something yeah cool but all of
15:49this is a
15:49bit odd because it's nothing like mrs godwin i mean two million dollars that's crazy she wasn't that kind of
15:57person once we're done here we're gonna go and search mrs godwin's house also we've emailed everyone on the
16:03st vincent's weekly newsletter to see if any of the parishioners saw anything suspicious yesterday
16:08okay thank you sir that was the solicitor handling sylvie godwin's will it seems mrs godwin has left
16:17everything to hector moyce wow so this guy's just become a millionaire it appears so sir what do we know
16:28about him he's a fisherman or was but he hasn't worked for the last 18 months or so due to
16:34an injury
16:34out at sea so if he's had no income for almost two years then then two million is gonna come
16:42in very handy
16:48i don't know either it's all a bit crazy right now mom i'll speak to you later i got to
16:53go i'll leave
16:53it to his inspector no worries commissioner sir i just got off the phone to my mother and she has
16:59no
17:00idea what sylvie godwin was talking about in that letter well if if anything else comes to mind you let
17:04me know yeah all right where are they going to interview hector moyes he's a possible suspect now
17:12hector a suspect he's a good guy he wouldn't kill anybody let alone sylvie godwin she was like a
17:18mother to him well these are the questions we have to ask it's what we do without fear or favor
17:24remember
17:30that used to be my boat there spent more time to get on me and her than anyone else
17:38and then some doctor you don't even know writes a certificate saying you can do it no more well
17:47how are your finances now you're not working i'm struggling all right no one wants to employ a guy who
17:54only knows how to do one thing in his life yeah but that will change us now doesn't excuse me
18:01what
18:01mr moyes you inherit the bulk of sylvie godwin's estate and don't tell us you didn't know her solicitor
18:08told us mrs godwin informed you when she made the will a few years back yeah i knew but she
18:13got hardly
18:13nothing just our house which is a few tens of thousands you think i'd kill for that you're telling
18:18us she didn't let you know what was in her will no why it's more than just her house 2
18:27.4 million
18:27dollars more i'm sorry what is this a joke funny how things turn out hey yeah i didn't know she
18:37had
18:37that kind of money i swear to you she never mentioned a word to me about it look i get
18:43it i get how it
18:44looks to you i need money badly i'm desperate but i had no idea sylvie was loaded like that
18:52so why would i kill her
18:59sarge found some kind of time machine in mrs godwin's office oh it's a computer
19:08uh have you done those there no not yet okay you do that and i'll do this cool
19:18well it seems to be working so i noticed your dad wasn't around yesterday if you don't mind me asking
19:26how old are you and is he yeah he um he passed away i'm so sorry how old were you
19:36eleven that's so young it must have been hard
19:42really hard you know yeah my first lesson in pain
19:48what seeing my mother rise up every morning after that that showed me what true love looks like you
19:56know made us closer a team you can tell
20:10the bell shot dipty you know what a dipty is yeah it's um used to measure oil in the car
20:18you know
20:18you dip it in take your toe i said dipty you're trying to say dipstick right dipty a painting or
20:26carving on two panels usually hinge like a book oh you mean dipty yeah man you know about dipty
20:33and empty yeah well apparently this bell shot dipty is rare priceless kind of rare yeah
20:41why was sylvie interested in this
20:46let's check her search history
20:53why watch her she searched the hell out of it this was three days ago friday the day before she
21:00posted that letter to the commissioner
21:07the bell shot dipty is a rare french panel painting from the middle ages each panel measures 50 by 30
21:14centimeters rare so it's worth some coinage it's worth major coinage if anybody could find it it
21:21went missing from france during the second world war and here it is it's believed the diptych was
21:26taken from a museum in paris by a young german soldier called joseph cross they reckon he brought
21:32that same painting over here to the caribbean when the vichy government sends a new governor to martini
21:38cross and a couple of other german soldiers accompanied him and what happened to it when
21:44he came here why jano but joseph cross he fled the region when we were finished and the painting never
21:52resurfaced and some historians believe that krause hid the belshare diptych on one of the smaller
21:57neighboring islands like saint marie right so our victim was looking into this belshare diptych and the
22:07next day sent a letter to the commissioner saying she wanted to put right a wrong that took place
22:11many years before at st vincent's church and 24 hours later sylvie was murdered in the church with
22:18both doors locked from the inside she also had over two million dollars in her bank account and we've
22:24no idea how she got that money but if she came into possession of this painting then maybe that could
22:30explain why she ended up so rich okay let's keep digging yeah and ds thomas get in touch with the
22:40commissioner because if there's any truth in it this could be a big deal
22:56everything all right
23:01it's just like first hector then mrs godwin it's all it's all a bit much right now
23:11sylvie was all about doing the right thing you should have said so no because it's like you said
23:17right without fear or favor so it's not right me defending her is it even if i know it's the
23:23truth
23:25sab if this case is too close to home it's okay to take a step back no it's cool sarge
23:31it's cool i
23:32i really want to help get to the bottom of this facility yeah sure yeah all right then i'll see
23:39you tomorrow morning yeah all right take care of yourself
23:48all right thanks for letting me know mrs martin you have yourself a good evening
23:55sir that was one of the parishioners from st vincent's received the email we sent out asking
24:01if anyone saw anything suspicious yesterday says she saw a woman outside the church yesterday morning
24:07parked up in a hire car never seen her at st vincent's before description it was a silver vehicle with
24:14logos for cariba car hire the woman looked in her 50s with shoulder length blonde hair not much of a
24:22tan
24:22apparently so with the hire car maybe not a local yes me again so who is she i'm telling you
24:30the police
24:31haven't found it yet i watched two officers leaving her house both of them carrying evidence
24:35and they didn't have it with them so where's it got to i know a little of the history of
24:42the belchior
24:43diptyque but how or why that connects to sylvie godwin i don't know but i shall ask around
24:52evening all um sorry i'm late i had a prior arrangement with a bloke called barry who might
25:01i ask is barry it's funny you should ask that well barry is a retired expat who's returning to the
25:07uk
25:07to be with his grandchildren so he's selling off a bunch of stuff online so i got myself this beauty
25:14and what is that sir this is the answer to katherine's prayers not that she knows yet
25:20what is the answer to my prayer oh catherine well it's the one thing that's missing from your place
25:37oh it's a dark boy i can see that you see the thing is dominoes is all well and good
25:43but for a
25:44boozer to be a proper boozer but this is not a boozer a pub or a pub but whatever this
25:51establishment
25:52wants to call itself with this on your wall it can only enhance the communal vibe no we're not an
25:59english-themed sports bar it's not going up yeah but katherine i said no just imagine my final word no
26:09no
26:21it seems you are now the proud owner of your very own dad board
26:37i'll have it much to me right now in the moment you know i know it is my love i
26:41know
26:46whoa mom what's this oh what uh seb sweetheart uh uh this isn't um
26:54seb you you you weren't supposed to good evening sebastian you all right me are you all right what's
27:01this huh what's going on because they look like what are you i i i i i guess you could
27:07say we've
27:07we've been getting close the two of us right since when well um since i suppose since um what would
27:17you say allow it how long has it been i suppose we could say um it's been a year a
27:24year a year ma and
27:27you never once thought to mention it to me uh hector i'm so sorry could you could you give us
27:32a moment
27:33please actually i need to be getting home anyway sir sorry you had to find out like this sebastian i
27:40should
27:41have we should have to
27:58i wanted to tell you but i i was too scared of how i'd react no so then what
28:08see it is because of that no no really it's not that a whole year ma a whole year you've
28:16been lying to me
28:19you know in the last 24 hours it turns out not one person is who i thought they were
28:31but i never thought you would be one of them i need some air
28:55good morning inspector here's thomas inheritance oh well i mean okay that's interesting
29:05all right well thanks and also i wanted to know so when was what the oh one second sir
29:14good morning inspector sarge sarge what's going on sir well i went on a walk last night and i ended
29:21up
29:22here so i thought i'd come and start on the case can we oh yes sure sorry sorry yes sorry
29:29sorry oh
29:31no sir oh sorry yes yes come on yes so um i'm just on the phone with uh sylvie godwin's
29:38bank manager
29:39and interestingly the 2.4 million in her account she inherited it from her husband walter godwin
29:45the bank manager says she don't know where he got it from or how walter got so rich it was
29:50walter's
29:51money yeah and unfortunately the liar who was handling water's will it's no longer her own so that's all i
29:57got why is there a post-it with post-mortem exclamation mark written on it oh uh the post-mortem
30:02just came in it's here somewhere got it under the takeaway i will clear that up for you as soon
30:08as
30:08possible sarge sorry about that why is there a pack of toilet roll on my desk that's why i went
30:13for
30:13the walk in the first place my new host mate was that don't forget the toilet roll pm says the
30:19victim
30:20became unconscious and died of hypoxia and reckon she was hit with something with a sharp edge rather than
30:26banging her head on the floor so we're right it was murder what are all these printouts on the
30:33floor sir oh that's from uh kariba car hire they sent the details of the woman who was seen outside
30:38st vincent church the morning of the murder selena bascom 54 years old from the uk berkshire arrived here
30:46friday and is staying at the golden bay hotel yeah i think she's just a tourist there's nothing
30:51interesting about her yet well then you didn't look properly seb because on her passport she uses
30:56her maiden name godwin as in sylvie and walter godwin how did i miss that we need to talk to
31:07her right
31:07wait so i'm going to talk to her right away so i'm going to fletcher yeah sorry about that hello
31:12hello
31:15oh
31:30seb this is cool you're trying to move the case on but your head is pinging around all over the
31:36place
31:36it's close to chaos in there i understand what it looks like sarge but i've been up all night doing
31:41a
31:41lot of work and i feel like i'm very close to you should go home okay have a shower get
31:47yourself
31:47straight but sarge i need to finish i know but you're not helping right now we can't work like this
31:57all right sarge
32:07thanks for coming in miss bascom please take a seat walter godwin was my grandfather
32:13he was stationed on saint marie during the second world war
32:18when the war ended he wrote to my grandmother who was pregnant with my father at the time
32:25saying that he wasn't coming home that it was over between them and he knew she was pregnant
32:31yes except i don't think it was him who wrote that letter i think it was someone else
32:37um i found this on the saint vincent's church website it's the day that walter godwin got married
32:45to sylvie well that's sylvie but that's not walter godwin that that's not my grandfather see
32:53that's not the same man
33:02so you realized that someone might have stolen your grandfather's identity i know they did
33:10and you came here to saint marie to find out who this other walter godwin was that's why you were
33:16at the church sunday morning to speak with sylvie godwin
33:23mrs godwin
33:28so how did she react when you suggested that the man who she'd been married to for 60 odd years
33:33may not be who she thought he was she already knew she said that she'd only just found out herself
33:42that week how well her her plumber had found a box hidden under the floorboards when he was fixing a
33:49pipe i'll find out which plumber sylvie said it had the true identity of her husband in it all his
33:57personal documents making clear what happened to my grandfather which was what she wouldn't tell
34:05me she said that she wasn't ready yet and that she wanted to do it in her own time and
34:12in her own
34:13way whatever that meant i think it meant she wanted to go to the police first about it which must
34:21have
34:22frustrated you coming all this way to be denied the truth it is my family you have no right to
34:27keep
34:27this to yourself sorry i can't help you and in that moment caught up in it all that's when you
34:36must have
34:36decided no i wouldn't really i wouldn't i just left i was angry but i didn't want to hurt her
34:45i just
34:45wanted to know what was in that box and now she's dead and i don't know where it is
35:00so if sylvie had this box she talked about where is it because it wasn't at the crime scene
35:07and it wasn't at her house and if someone did steal water godwin's identity
35:11who and what happened to the real water godwin i just got off the phone with a plumber who was
35:17over at the victim's house last friday said sylvie looked haunted after she looked inside that box
35:27about an hour later she was getting inside a taxi saying she needed to go to saint vincent's primary
35:32school
35:36she went to see yasmin seeley
35:43okay i'm gonna lay it out miss seeley i believe it's you who has the missing box sylvie's
35:49we could get a search warrant or
36:08it's a german passport
36:12from the second world war it looks like belonged to joseph krauss it's believed the diptych was taken
36:19from a museum in paris by a young german soldier called joseph krauss the last visa stamp sure he left
36:25martinique at the end of the war and came to saint marie
36:32saint marie times september 27th 1945. it's a report about an unnamed british soldier getting into a fight
36:41with a group of german naval officers and left for dead near saint vincent's church his body was
36:48never found i believe that soldier was walter godwin and i think joseph krauss came across his body
36:56joseph realized he could steal his identity if he could dispose of the body without it being found
37:04a map of the saint vincent churchyard
37:08that must be where the real walter godwin was buried he took walter's uniform and papers and buried him there
37:16in this grave so no one would ever find it from that moment on joseph krauss was walter godwin
37:23i guess he softened his accent as much as he could and by the time he and sylvie met
37:27about 15 years later and he seemed like the englishman she thought he was we need to get a
37:32forensic victim over from guadalu i'm assuming mr krauss went to all these lengths because of this
37:45the belshaw diptych i mean if the authorities worked out he stole it and came looking for him
37:50then with a new identity they wouldn't find him from what i know he lived a simple life working as
37:56a
37:56caretaker for this school and when he and sylvie met everyone always said they truly loved each other
38:05that was the day she retired handed the baton over to me
38:12why have you got this box miss sylvie
38:16sylvie brought it with her when she came here on friday i asked her if i could keep it so
38:20i could look
38:21into it some more that's all it's entirely innocent not if you didn't tell us about it isn't
38:26actually that's suspicious why did you choose to keep it to yourself
38:35this school is everything to me
38:39and i can't risk its reputation being damaged
38:43you're struggling enough as it is financially all we have to keep going is donations people's
38:49goodwill and if it ever got out that we had a caretaker working here that wasn't who we thought
38:54he was was a a nazi soldier who covered up a murder
39:02so you killed miss godwin to stop all this no no no i'm very sorry i should have told you
39:08about it i know
39:09but i didn't kill her
39:20so if joseph kraus sold the belshar diptych and had all that money then why he never do nothing with
39:28it never spend it nothing perhaps he kept it just in case i mean if the truth ever caught up
39:34with him
39:35then he had the means to change his identity again afternoon sergeant thomas
39:44the trouble is we're still no closer to working out who murdered sylvie godwin
39:49and then managed to exit the building when both the front and back door were locked from the inside
39:55with keys inside the lock
39:59he's buried here my grandfather we believe so yes
40:23officer rose inspector hey um sorry i'll just uh take in a moment you know
40:34i'll give you some space no no no no you're all right i was just coming in to see if
40:39i could
40:39make any more sense of it all me too i guess
40:44and not much
40:48usually i find it levels me out i can feel peace here
40:57no sorry i haven't been much use in this investigation it's just been a lot for me you
41:01know i mean look we all have cases that um throw us off balance from time to time when i've
41:07had more
41:07than my first year trust me right see when i'm thrown by a case my brain just starts jumping around
41:17like
41:19some itchy footed grasshopper you know well maybe that is your unique selling point so i'd say embrace it
41:32own it don't let it own you in fact you know what let's try it let's try it right now
41:39yeah oh we
41:41visualize it only this time you are taking the lead okay come on up you get that's it
41:51okay this is the crime scene the murder of sylvie godwin
41:56that door the front door is locked from the inside the keys in the door
42:05sylvie's body is here
42:09this big wooden cross is on top of her
42:15come on just freestyle it yeah just say whatever your brain wants to say
42:21um i'm thinking about when i busted the door open
42:25like her mom you know when i got home it was all bruised up so i drank some rum to
42:30numb the pain
42:34but that also means it was definitely locked
42:41okay okay what else well then if you were the killer you'll probably prefer to leave the scene
42:49at the back yeah yeah keep going keep going so that way you're less likely to be seen by others
42:53so um
42:54maybe we're in the wrong room the back room come on
43:08so what's she saying to you this room what was it telling you
43:17what collection box it's just usually it sits right there under the shelf
43:24no it looks like it's been pulled out of the cupboard
43:33there's a kind in it and that's odd because because miss godwin empties the collection box every
43:39sunday after the service today's collection passed down and she gives the money to my mom
43:50so this must have been put in there after she was murdered which means well then the killer must have
43:56put it there that won't go in the keys in on the other side
44:07the victim became unconscious and reckoned she was hit by something with a sharp edge
44:14did take a painting or a carving on two panels usually hinge like a book
44:19local art historians generally believe it was brought to saint marie
44:30bingo
44:32have you solved the case it was actually officer rose and his itchy footy grass upper brain that solved it
44:39i did that coin explains everything okay let's move people there's still some things we need to do
44:46like get hold of a search warrant and we need the luminol oh and we need a tape measure why
44:52do we need
44:53a tape measure to measure something
45:03way back in 1945 a young british soldier by the name of walter godwin was killed here on saint marie
45:11his identity was stolen and his body was hidden in someone else's grave now finally thanks to sylvie
45:20godwin and the discovery of this box that young man can get the proper burial he deserves thank you
45:29which brings us to the crime in the present sylvie godwin's murder at st vincent's church on sunday
45:35and although it occurred many years after walter godwin's murder this little wooden box in its contents
45:41helped solve this murder as well
45:45we know from the post-mortem that sylvie was hit with a sharp object this spray luminal detects traces
45:52of blood and this proves that there was blood on the box recently as you can see here
46:02now we have another time to carry out the relevant tests but when our lab compares this blood
46:07with sylvie's i'm confident they'll match and as this box has only been in one person's possession
46:13since the murder it has led me to believe that sylvie godwin's killer was yasmin seeley
46:24what have you done that that's not true someone else must have taken it on them
46:33don't worry miss seeley we'll be coming to this in a minute
46:39throughout this case we've worked on the assumption that sylvie godwin's husband real name joseph
46:45krauss had sold the painting he had stolen which explains why he had so much money in his bank
46:51account well it's half the truth because the unique defining thing about a diptych is that there are
46:58two halves to it diptych a painting or a carving on two panels usually hinge like a book and we
47:05now know
47:06that joseph krauss sold only one half of the belshaw diptych and he kept the other half
47:15the other half of the belshaw diptych would miss me now we'll never fully know why joseph separated
47:28the two panels my sense is that he was someone who liked to hedge his bets be prepared for all
47:33eventualities i think that's partly why he never spent any of the money plus having to explain to his
47:40wife to be how he came into such major coinage would mean admitting to the theft of this famous piece
47:47of art and also being an imposter so joseph held on to the money and the picture so where has
47:56it been
47:57the last 80 odd years or so hanging on the wall of the headmistress's office at the saint vincent's
48:03primary school which is now your office miss seeley joseph cross must have put it there during
48:15his years as caretaker and no one ever thought anything of it this faded religious icon hanging
48:23on the wall of a church school surrounded by other religious images earlier today miss seeley when
48:31we talked in your office that was the day she retired i saw that framed photo on the wall of
48:36sylvie and
48:37walter and i happened to notice the outline of a larger rectangle around that frame where the paint
48:43hadn't faded clearly another picture had previously hung there for some time i didn't think much of it at
48:50first but i had it measured and guess what it was 50 centimeters by 30 centimeters the exact same
49:00dimensions as one half of the belshaw dipped in each panel measures 50 by 30 centimeters that's why
49:08mrs godwin came to see you when she found the box and realized what was hanging on her old office
49:14wall
49:16we can't keep it i go and let the police know but you didn't agree did you you told us
49:24your school was
49:25struggling for money but we had a bit of a dig and it's it's worse than that you've not drawn
49:33a salary
49:33in the last six months to keep it going you said yourself the place meant so much to you and
49:40so the
49:41prospect of getting millions of dollars just landing in your lap well you just weren't willing to give
49:48that up and so after driving home to pick up food for lorette's lunch gathering you returned to the
49:56church to plead with sylvie one more time please don't do it that money it could help the school so
50:05much could help me sylvie wasn't for turning was she i'm desperate as officer rose said she always
50:12tried to do good in life and she wasn't about to stop now sorry so in that moment desire for
50:19the money
50:20got the better of you and you decided you were going to stop her i assume sylvie had that box
50:24with
50:25her in the church that day and this box was your weapon of choice and once you used it to
50:34kill her
50:34you made it look like there'd been some tragic accident
50:45how could you
50:49now knowing that the front door of the church had already been locked by mrs godwin
50:54you made your escape via the rear using the church's spare back door key that you took from
51:00the back room to lock the door from the outside and placing this little coin in the lock
51:15it's locked so that when you returned with officer rose and lorette that won't go in and with the
51:21little play acting it would seem like the door was locked from the inside the keys in on the other
51:27side
51:28then when officer rose and his mom headed round to the front you lingered briefly
51:33and proceeded to open the door with the church's spare key pushing this coin out in the process
51:39and then inserting that key inside
51:45all you had to do was find the moment to actually lock it okay thank you
51:51i'm going to sign it to me
51:54seeing the coin on the floor you picked it up
51:59and without your bag or purse
52:04you disposed of it in the collection box
52:10and then actually locked the back door with the key
52:16it was very clever of you making it look like sylvie was on her own in the church when she
52:21had that fatal fall
52:23one might say devilishly so
52:27but you see sylvie was so determined that the truth would come out that even after her death
52:32her desire to put right a decades-old wrong finally won out this arrived for me in the morning post
52:45officer rose i think this arrest has your name on it
52:54i don't want to see you in the morning post
52:54get up
52:57it has been silly i'm arresting you for the murder of silly me god
53:01you don't need to stay in the team
53:03you don't need to stay in the team

53:34poor sylvie
53:37and just for money
53:40i'm sorry for getting it wrong no you haven't seen me at my best on this case
53:46that's not what your inspector told me he said it was because of you that it all got solved
53:54which is even more impressive considering you had other things to deal with
53:59like your mother keeping secrets and honestly mom i think it's helping you moving on
54:06i don't think you should be getting old and lonely and just focusing on me and the church you know
54:12you deserve happiness too
54:18you all right yes i
54:24so you like him
