00:05Welcome, everybody, to Aspen, Colorado, in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
00:10This is professional Taekwondo.
00:12I'm Dave Shims, along with David Morton, 1985 gold medalist at the United States Olympic
00:17Festival.
00:18And, David, tonight, we're going to see some of the best this sport has to offer.
00:22Dave, you're going to see world champions, Olympic champions, national champions, giving
00:26you a display of dynamic kicking, flexibility, speed, power, everything that Taekwondo has
00:31to offer here at Pro TKD tonight.
00:33It's going to be special.
00:34We're glad to have you with us.
00:36Without any further ado, let's go for some Pro TKD.
00:49This is Pro TKD.
00:51Tonight's guest ring announcer, Saturday Night Live's Tracy Morgan.
00:54And keeping the beat, the music of DJ Scribble.
00:57Pro TKD is brought to you in part by WooWare.
00:59It's what you need, it's what you want.
01:02Old Milwaukee, America's best tasting beer.
01:05And by the Gantt, an exceptional destinations hotel, condominium resort in the heart of Aspen.
01:10Master Doug Duchell will now explain the Pro TKD rules and scoring.
01:15Welcome, everyone.
01:16This is the Pro TKD rules.
01:18We have a couple of target areas.
01:20Those target areas are above the waist and below the neck for kicking and punching.
01:26Okay, an example of this.
01:28Roundhouse kick to the body.
01:31Okay, then punching to the body.
01:35All right, we get three points for a spinning kick to the body.
01:39Back kick.
01:40A spinning roundhouse to the body and not a bond.
01:45Okay, and a double kick to the body also gets three points.
01:49All right, we get three points for a kick to the head.
01:54Okay, that was an axe kick to the head.
01:55Now roundhouse kick to the head.
01:58All right, now for five points.
02:02Spinning kick to the head.
02:04Okay, now a little combination.
02:08Those are the ways that you score points for Pro TKD tonight.
02:11I hope you enjoy the show.
02:16All right, Master Boucher.
02:19Are you guys ready for your first match?
02:22And it's on!
02:24In the red corner, we have Kevin Magullo.
02:28160 pounds and ain't having it.
02:301996 U.S. team member.
02:3397 world team member.
02:35Second Pro TKD of Pan Rads.
02:37Give it up for Kevin Magullo in the house.
02:41Yeah, baby!
02:43And it's on!
02:44And it's on!
02:46In the blue corner, we have Andrew Robbins.
02:50160 pounds of let's get it on!
02:54Four-time All-Army and Armed Forces champion.
02:57Three-time CISM Military Games team member.
03:00Let's give it up for Andrew Robbins!
03:04Three rounds of a minute 30 apiece and a premium on action tonight.
03:09No messing around.
03:10That's right.
03:11We've got Drew Roberts just coming off a silver medal at the Pan Am Olympic Qualifier.
03:15And there he is.
03:15Starts it off with a triple kick to Kevin Magullo.
03:19Spinning roundhouse kick.
03:20Kevin trying to push him to the corner.
03:22Kevin is known for pushing the action.
03:24And Drew coming in with a double kick.
03:26Kevin punching to the chest.
03:27Barely missing the point on that one.
03:30One thing you have to factor in here, too.
03:32The altitude here at Aspen.
03:33And that Roberts in blue is battling asthma.
03:36Well, in a minute 30 in three rounds, it shouldn't affect him too much.
03:40But with the asthma, it will have a slight impact, especially with the activity level that Kevin Magullo has.
03:45He never stops.
03:46And there's a back kick right to the midsection.
03:47We'll have to see if that has an impact on Andrew Roberts.
03:52Magullo in the white.
03:53And really taking it to Roberts, who's had a lot of experience internationally, as a member of the United States
03:59Army.
04:00Well, Kevin has also had a lot of international experience as a member of the U.S. national team in
04:0496 and in the world team in 1997, where he went to the World Cup in Egypt.
04:08And he did lose a tough one in the quarterfinals, so he came home without a medal, but he lost
04:11a tough one to the eventual champion of Iran in the World Cup in 1997.
04:15This is the first round of our first match of the evening.
04:19McCullough in white and Roberts in blue.
04:22Roberts barely missing about 10 seconds ago with a back spinning kick to the head.
04:26Kevin McCullough going with the axe kick to the head.
04:30Premium on action.
04:32Both landing with some pretty good blows there.
04:35Almost an even exchange.
04:37Andrew Roberts going to the head with an axe kick just a second ago.
04:39There he is with a spinning roundhouse kick, looking for those extra points to the body.
04:43And there you have it, the end of our first round.
04:46And we spoke with both fighters, asking them to put their strategy in their own words.
04:53First, we'll hear from Kevin McCullough.
04:56When I was a kid, I used to lay back, and I noticed I didn't win as much.
04:59And then all of a sudden, about five, six years ago, I just went straight in.
05:03You know, and ever since then, I've been getting the Ws, made the team.
05:07I've been asked to do these events.
05:08And, yeah, my strategy is pretty much go, and usually people are a little bit defensive
05:14when they play me because of that.
05:16And I'm good at fighting defensive fighters, so it all works in my favor.
05:19Yeah.
05:21And what about Andrew Roberts and his plans?
05:23Take a listen.
05:24Usually I try to fill him out the first round.
05:26And, you know, once after that, I usually have a fill of his game.
05:32Then try and pick him apart.
05:34So here we go, headed into round number two.
05:37And, David, who do you have ahead?
05:38Well, I've got Kevin McCullough ahead.
05:39He's been more active.
05:40He's been pushing the issue a little bit.
05:42Although Drew's been throwing a lot of kicks, Kevin's been landing more blows.
05:47You can see on the official score count, it's McCullough leading five to three.
05:52And you can see some of the footwork there by Kevin McCullough putting him in a position
05:56to get Drew back in the corner.
05:59Drew looking a little worn.
06:00That asthma could be having an effect.
06:01That back kick right there is going to make him breathe hard.
06:05Who's been the truest in terms of their pre-fight strategy?
06:09Well, I think, you know, that would have to be McCullough.
06:11He's nonstop.
06:12Drew said he'd like to feel him out a little bit.
06:14But Kevin's pushing the issue a little bit too much, I think, for Drew to get any kind
06:17of strategy going.
06:18Backspinning hook kick by Drew Roberts going for the five-point technique, which would
06:22give him a decided advantage in this match.
06:25So a knockdown, Roberts goes down again.
06:29This is round two from the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, Colorado.
06:33Drew just missing with that axe kick.
06:35There goes Kevin pushing Drew into the corner again.
06:37Another backspinning hook kick going for McCullough's head, and Drew falls down.
06:41Notice how Kevin McCullough is staying in the center of the ring.
06:43His strategy is to stay in the center and push out from there wherever it goes.
06:48Those body punches do hurt.
06:49And a hard roundhouse kick to the head.
06:51Drew looks like he's out on his feet.
06:52Another one puts him down to the mat.
06:54Doesn't look good for Roberts here.
06:57Referee Han Lee counting in Korean.
06:59Counting to ten.
07:00Korean being the international language for Taekwondo.
07:02And it doesn't look like Drew Roberts is going to make it up.
07:05Crowd trying to pick him up, but not enough.
07:10That's it.
07:11Count of ten reached.
07:12Match over.
07:15Kevin McCullough, big winner.
07:17Knockout here in the second round.
07:20And here's the replay.
07:21We have the second shot, the roundhouse kick to the head.
07:24The one that put him down on the mat.
07:26When we come back, we'll have Master Doug Fuchel with an inside look at tactical TKD.
07:34The most frequently used kick in Taekwondo is the roundhouse kick.
07:38Let's take a look at that in slow motion.
07:50My opponent's counter to that is a double roundhouse.
07:53The sequence looks like this.
08:00My response to his double kick would be a backspinning hook kick.
08:05The sequence looks like this.
08:12Watch for these combinations, both targeted to the body and to the head in the Pro TKD matches.
08:19The next match we have tonight in the red corner, we have Danny Kim, 120 pounds, two-time U.S.
08:27national champion, two-time U.S. Olympic team member.
08:31Danny Kim in the blue corner.
08:34We have Hyun Lee, 120 pounds, three-time U.S. Olympic team member, world championship bronze medalist, Hyun Lee.
08:46Hyun Lee from San Diego, California.
08:49Stands 5'5", 120.
08:51He's in the blue.
08:52And in the red is Danny Kim, 5'7", 120 pounds, from Honolulu.
08:57Yeah, Danny just won the national championship this year in Ames, Iowa in the second place at the U.S.
09:01team trials.
09:02And a beautiful cut kick backspinning hook kick by Hyun Lee to open the round.
09:07Boy, we're talking about premium of action.
09:09We're going for it right here.
09:10Well, this is Danny Kim.
09:12He wanted this match.
09:12He wanted to fight who he called the legend, Hyun Lee.
09:15He grew up watching Hyun compete.
09:17Hyun being a three-time national champion.
09:19He wanted to fight Hyun and see how he could do.
09:21He considers Hyun the best.
09:24Well, for a youngster who considers himself the protege going against his hero,
09:29you've got to like the way he's taking it to Lee.
09:31Yeah, he's not giving him any quarter.
09:34He's showing him that he's here to fight.
09:35He's not here just to give him too much respect.
09:37And here's that cut kick, backspinning hook kick to open the round.
09:42Just missing, just missing Danny Kim's head.
09:45Good shot by Danny to get out of the way.
09:47Here's Dan going after him again.
09:49And there we are picking up the action.
09:50We've got Hyun.
09:51They're in a clinch right now.
09:52Danny just moving backwards, throwing two kicks in the span of less than a second.
09:56Moving backwards, trying to get away from Hyun Lee.
09:58Second match of the evening.
10:00First round.
10:03Hyun Lee in the blue.
10:05Daniel Kim in the red.
10:08Yeah, Hyun's piling up some one-point shots here.
10:10We're in the final seconds of our first round.
10:13Hyun Lee against Daniel Kim.
10:16Kim, a gold medalist at the World Collegiate Trials.
10:18He's a member of the World Cup team.
10:20Let's get a closer look at Danny Kim.
10:23When I start training, I like to focus on my opponent.
10:26And that way, I get myself ready, psyched up.
10:29When I step into that ring, there's no excuses.
10:31I know what's to be done.
10:33I've studied my opponent.
10:34I've studied myself.
10:35And the only thing I have to do is just perform, produce.
10:38In early competitions, my training consists of, like, I used to go for long periods of
10:43time, maybe six to eight hours, you know, just going over form, trying to get my form
10:47perfect, the right technique.
10:48If I saw somebody who had an awesome kick or awesome technique, I would study it, study
10:53it, study it until I had it.
10:54But now, as I'm mature as a fighter and as a Taekwondo martial artist, I like to keep
10:59it short and simple, short and sweet.
11:01That way, I don't get burnt out or anything.
11:03Basically, I think my opponent's myself.
11:05If I'm disciplined enough, if I prepared enough for the fight, no matter the outcome, win or
11:11lose, if I knew I prepared well, then I'm proud of myself.
11:14But, of course, you know, we always like to win.
11:19Some good insights into Danny Kim.
11:22Absolutely.
11:22Danny Kim credits a lot of his success to his mom.
11:26She's been a very strong influence in his life.
11:28This is round two of our second match of the evening.
11:31Woo!
11:31And it's half by Hyun Lee.
11:33Hyun Lee starting again with a cut kick back spinning kick.
11:36Danny Kim with a back kick right there.
11:38The interesting thing about Hyun Lee and that technique was he did the same thing on the
11:41opposite side to open the first round.
11:43Incredible amount of skill.
11:46How did you have that scored after the first round?
11:48At the end of the first round, we ended up having it Danny Kim leading by one point over
11:52Hyun Lee.
11:53Six to five.
11:54Hyun's going to push the action a little bit.
11:55You can see that coming in with a cut kick to Danny's lower section, his hip area, taking
11:59his center of gravity away and knocking him on the ground.
12:04Now, Daniel Kim, he's in red.
12:06Hyun Lee in the blue.
12:08Danny Kim, next kick to the face.
12:10Daniel Kim going to pile up some points with that one.
12:12It's going to be interesting to see if the judges give him a five-point score for a jumping
12:16kick to the head or just a three-point score.
12:18We're not sure if his feet were on the ground when he launched that technique.
12:22Both men airborne on that one, on that exchange.
12:25Danny Kim glancing over at the score to see where he stands.
12:28Hyun Lee standing in the center of the ring, getting ready to push the action as is his
12:32style.
12:33This is round number two, three 90-second rounds in our matches tonight.
12:39Daniel Kim, hard shot to the body.
12:42That's going to take some energy out of Hyun Lee.
12:44At this altitude and that kind of hard body shot, Hyun's going to be looking for oxygen
12:47at the end of round two.
12:48Tell you what, you get hit like that in such a quick blow.
12:51It's a real stunner, isn't it?
12:53Hyun Lee out of San Diego, California.
12:55Let's get a closer look.
12:56Through the knowledge that I achieved from competing internationally, that gives me a
13:02lot of confidence to do what I do.
13:07As in competing ways, I'm very sure of it.
13:12I'm very positive of it.
13:14I believe that my kicks are the strongest kicks in the world.
13:20And I don't think no one's going to kick the way I kick or punch the way I punch.
13:37Gotta love the confidence of these two gentlemen, Daniel Kim in red, Hyun Lee in blue, and a reminder
13:42that the judges scored at the end of each round, and it's not instantaneous.
13:48That was a flying sidekick, excuse me, Dave.
13:49That was a flying sidekick by Danny Kim.
13:53Look at Hyun Lee.
13:55Hyun Lee's really going to have to pile on the points at this point.
13:58That was a low shot, a spinning roundhouse kick by Hyun Lee.
14:01Daniel Kim attempting the underkick, and here it is.
14:04Here's Hyun with the spinning roundhouse kick.
14:07A closer look at the actual impact of that right to the groin area.
14:11Not sure if it hit him right on the cup, but definitely a large bruise he's going to have
14:15on the inside of his thigh.
14:16Not for the squeamish.
14:19Daniel Kim pushing the action here against Hyun Lee.
14:25As you can see, we have a score of 14-6 in favor of Danny Kim.
14:28He really piled on the points with some more difficult techniques.
14:32The more difficult the technique, the higher the score.
14:35Five points spinning.
14:37You get five points for spin or a jumping kick to the head.
14:41We've seen a lot of airborne action here in this match.
14:43These two are definitely high flyers.
14:45Daniel Kim a few minutes ago, a flying sidekick attempt at Hyun Lee's head.
14:49He's pushing the action.
14:50He feels that he can beat his idol.
14:54Hyun Lee in the blue.
14:55Has to push the action right now.
14:57Daniel Kim, double roundhouse kick.
14:59Setting up kind of a trapping motion.
15:01He got Hyun Lee coming in and hit him with the back kick.
15:03Then fell to the mat.
15:05Certainly not an abundance of awe from Danny Kim.
15:09He has a lot of respect for Hyun Lee, but he's gone after him.
15:12He came here to win.
15:13Altitude or not, he came here to win.
15:14And that's the end of round three.
15:16I think you're going to see Danny Kim with a victory here.
15:22Look at Lee.
15:23Bend over.
15:23He took some shots.
15:25Feeling the effects right now at this altitude.
15:27Absolutely.
15:33So your winner is Danny Kim out of Honolulu, Hawaii.
15:36He defeats Hyun Lee of San Diego, California.
15:40Coming up on Pro TKD, the exciting artistry of Shannon and Brian Gallagher.
15:48Welcome back, everybody.
15:49A change of pace as we present the artistry of 14-year-old Shannon Gallagher
15:53and her 12-year-old brother, Brian.
15:55Worldwide fame out of Cody, Wyoming.
15:57Taekwondo movements choreographed and synchronized to music.
16:01Let's sit back and enjoy.
16:14Whoa.
16:15Now, we're going to.
16:16We're going to.
16:32Shannon and Brian!
16:36Those Gallagher kids were terrific, weren't they?
16:38Oh, they're absolutely terrific. They put a real lot of hard work into all their training.
16:42Now for the big guys, the heavyweight, Ryan Fredericks in blue and Todd Tattamy in the white.
16:47That's right. When you say big guys, you're not kidding.
16:49Todd Tattamy at approximately 285 pounds, Ryan at about 240 in the blue.
16:55And you'll see a lot of the movements you saw the smaller guys do.
16:58You'll see some of these bigger guys do, and it's amazing that they move that fast.
17:01Right there, Ryan, straight off the line, roundhouse kick to Todd's midsection.
17:05Some big guys showing a lot of quickness.
17:07Boy, I tell you what, you'd want them on your side, that's for sure.
17:10Actually, I think they wanted Todd in the NFL. He's that big.
17:14Ryan, Todd in the middle, punching there.
17:16Those punches take a lot out of you, especially in the heavyweight division.
17:18They punch so hard.
17:20Ooh, a hard back kick from Ryan Fredericks.
17:22And a backspinny kick to Todd's head, narrowly missing.
17:25That would have been a five-point technique in Ryan's favor.
17:27I'm amazed at the agility.
17:29Somebody that big, 6'2", 225, they list him at those numbers, that he can get that leg up so
17:34hard.
17:34Oh, his flexibility is incredible, especially for a man his size.
17:37And he's only 21 years old.
17:39We call him a man, but he's only 21 years old.
17:41He's the future heavyweight of Taekwondo in the United States.
17:45First round action, the heavyweight.
17:47Front leg axe kick to Todd's face.
17:49That's going to give Ryan a boost in points.
17:50At least a three-point technique there.
17:52Todd's been working a roundhouse kick to the body.
17:54One-point shot here and there.
17:56Ryan Fredericks explains how Taekwondo changed his life.
18:01Give a listen.
18:02I was born in St. Thomas, Virginia.
18:04I live in a little community called Bovoni.
18:08I moved to Florida when I was about 10 years old.
18:11I like fighting.
18:15And that's the main thing.
18:16Everything else that came along with it was...
18:20It didn't grab my interest very much.
18:25But, you know, I tend to lose interest.
18:28And then my instructor just pulled me to the side and he told me,
18:30you know, you need to find something that you really like and enjoy about this
18:33in order for you to stay in it.
18:35So I was getting bored pretty quick.
18:38And then I started going to a couple of tournaments and I enjoyed it.
18:41So I kept doing it and doing it and doing it.
18:43So I just took it all from there.
18:46In a win-and-lose situation, pain is just non-existent.
18:50I try to ignore my pain and hide my pain or anything from my opponent.
18:58I just like that feeling to get in there man-to-man and see who comes out on top.
19:02Ryan Fredericks, and we'll have more of our heavyweight match right after these messages.
19:09Welcome back, everybody.
19:11Todd Tattamy in the left.
19:12Ryan Fredericks in the blue.
19:13Can you believe it?
19:14For guys so big and so powerful and explosive, they're so soft-spoken.
19:18Absolutely.
19:19That soft-spokenness came through in a moving back double kick into a back hook kick to Todd's head.
19:25But yeah, Ryan is such a nice young man.
19:27He's very, very calm.
19:28He's very humble.
19:29And he's not very loud and obnoxious, you know, as you might think with some people.
19:34He is just a tremendous athlete and a tremendous person.
19:37Both of these young men definitely carry the badge of TKD very well here, too.
19:42In that first round, who did you have ahead?
19:44Well, I had Ryan ahead on my unofficial scorecard 7-2, but apparently the judges didn't see it that way.
19:49The judges sitting in the corners didn't give Todd any points and have Ryan up 7-0 at this point.
19:55Todd's got a lot of work cut out for him.
19:58When you're behind in a situation like this, you've got to score quickly.
20:03You've got to get a couple of five-pointers coming up here, right?
20:07That's the end of round number two.
20:13Todd Tattamy, big guy from Battle Creek, Michigan.
20:17Let's learn some more about him.
20:20What I like about the sport is the individual competitiveness.
20:25The majority of the time, there are worse opponents yourself.
20:31Every opponent is a form of a strong opponent.
20:35I've lost matches because I've underestimated me.
20:39My intention is not to underestimate anybody.
20:44I'm a competitor. I thrive on competition.
20:49To me, everything is a competition, so I look forward to challenges and competition.
20:56It's a 10-kick rule.
20:58Todd Tattamy, third and final round.
21:00Here we go from Aspen, Colorado.
21:03On your scorecard, who do you have, David?
21:04I've got Ryan way ahead at this point.
21:07At least a double-digit lead.
21:09What Todd has to do is not rely on the one-point kicks, one point to the body, a basic
21:13round kick to the body.
21:14Ryan can just sit here and float through this round and kick to the body.
21:17Todd needs to do a spinning kick to the body, a jumping or spinning to the head.
21:20He needs to get himself up on points.
21:22Throw those techniques that are going to gain in points, not fall behind.
21:26And as you say that, Ryan Fredericks in the blue.
21:30He goes down.
21:32Absolutely. Ryan moving back.
21:33Back kick to Todd's midsection, but still scoring points.
21:37The judges have him up 11-1.
21:39As I said, a double-digit lead.
21:40He's up by 10 points at this time.
21:42Todd's going to have to score some major points.
21:44That one right there could have been one step-forward back kick.
21:47We call that a 360 back kick in Taekwondo.
21:49Pushing Ryan out of the ring.
21:52Fredericks is winning with his head.
21:54Boy, I tell you what.
21:55It looks like he's gasping for air.
21:57It looks like he's in a little bit of trouble.
21:58Well, I'll tell you.
21:59If this round lasts too long, he is going to be in big trouble.
22:02Because what happens is Todd's punching to the body.
22:04And a man that size, 280-plus pounds, hits you.
22:07It's going to take something out of you.
22:10Third and final round of our heavyweight matchup.
22:14Wheeler Hopper out.
22:15That's a good shot there by Todd Tattamy.
22:16Spinning roundhouse kick to the ribs.
22:18Todd seems to be favoring his left arm.
22:20It might have been injured with Ryan back there.
