00:00You have polling data from your MoviePass members as well as some prediction market data as well
00:05when it comes to the top four categories. We're talking about best film, best director, best
00:10actress, best actor. What is it telling you so far? Well, you can see both of the polls. So
00:16some are putting real money down with Calci's and then ours are just general polls like,
00:23well, what do you think is going to win? And they're pretty neck and neck. I mean,
00:26they're saying the same thing. And so I think it's really going to be interesting to see if
00:32there's any surprises beyond what the audience already thinks. And I'm curious, I mean, year to
00:37year, does the popularity of, you know, which category is the zeitgeist, does that change that
00:43much? Or is it consistently, you know, who's going to win best actress, actor? Yeah. I mean,
00:48the big four, that's why they put them at the end of the evening. So it goes actress,
00:54actress, actor, director, and then picture. So they hold those because, you know, they're the
01:00biggest that you're going to get. And I mean, this is the movie industry Super Bowl. So yeah,
01:05well, let's start with best picture because, you know, obviously one battle after another,
01:09Sinners, Hamnet kind of seems to be a lot of the names that people have been talking about,
01:14less so Frankenstein, which I didn't even know was a movie, F1 and a few others. I'm sure you've
01:18seen all these. Yeah. One battle after another, that tops your poll. It also tops Calci as well.
01:25You think that should win an Oscar for best picture?
01:28I'd like to see Sinners win it. I get why it's leading the tables, but it's a good film. It's
01:38timely. It's probably the only thing out there really talking about what's going on in politics
01:43and in the world in a very bold way that only art can. So I get why it's up there.
01:48Yeah. And I mean, Paul Thomas, I mean, obviously he's proven himself for a time and he's certainly
01:52a favorite of a lot of the Oscar voters. But at the same time, I mean, you talk about speaking
01:56to the moment and the time. Sinners in a certain way did that as well in a much more different
02:00way
02:01and a little bit more creatively. And I think about all the accolades that Ryan Coogler got for
02:06just being able to make this film and finance this film. And, and it is the most nominated film ever
02:12history. So it's got 16 nominations. And only thing behind that is Titanic at 14. Wow. All
02:20about Eve at 14 and La La Land. Other than that, it is the most nominated film in history. Well,
02:27other than La La Land, that's good company. Yeah. I thought La La Land was so overrated, but I mean,
02:32all about Eve, obviously a classic. I can't, I can't. If this desk doesn't work out, I think you
02:36should start reviewing movies. Oh, I've got opinions. Yeah. You should blog about this, Romain. I would
02:41read that. But I mean, going on with Sinners, Michael B. Jordan, of course, in contention for
02:46best actor. So too is Timothee Chalamet. He played two different people. Yeah. I haven't seen any of
02:53these movies. He played, he played his own twin. Yeah. And wasn't there like a story where like
02:57he like for one twin, he wore like tight shoes or something so that he would have like a little
03:01bit
03:01of a different gait when he walked or something. And their clothes are different colors. That's
03:04pretty cool. I'm learning a lot about these movies. He's come a long way. I mean, my husband actually
03:09wants to watch some of these before we get to the Oscars, but I feel like I'm learning piecemeal
03:13about the plot. How do you feel about Timothee Chalamet? Oh my God. What an interesting
03:17question. I really like him as an actor. I thought he was fantastic.
03:23In the Bob Dylan biopic. Okay. I think that some of the heat he's getting for the ballet
03:27comments is a little bit overblown. What about Marty Supreme? Did you see Marty Supreme? I haven't.
03:33Okay. You saw Marty Supreme. Yeah. What did you think of his performance? The performance is great.
03:37The movie in and of itself, like uncut gyms. Yeah. Put it this way. I had a bag of popcorn.
03:44I didn't
03:45get to eat any of it because the whole time I'm like, what are you doing? Stop it. You know?
03:50Yeah.
03:51But the acting was great. I felt that the film had some challenges with it, but all in all,
03:57it's great. I mean, everybody, what they did in their own lane is incredible. I mean, you're getting
04:03the end of the year, the best of the best. And so I just think Hollywood is hitting on all
04:09pistons
04:09again. You're seeing a lot of original work end up being here. These aren't franchises.
04:15I thought that was interesting too. I mean, you've not really seen, you know, those big,
04:19you know, the Marvel movies or those big franchises. I mean, you had some kind of,
04:23I guess, IP with that one and things like that, but these are more kind of organic from the ground
04:27up kind of stories. Yeah. The original IP and that's huge to see that kind of traction at the
04:33box office. Yeah. It's nice. Right. It's refreshing. And it, you know, makes you believe in the creative
04:37juice of this country's movie industry. I will say I was supposed to see Marty Supreme with my parents
04:42over Christmas and my husband, and I'm glad we didn't because I hear it was a little bit raunchy.
04:46So I'm happy to have missed that one. But I mean, let's talk about, you know, the movie business
04:52overall, because as I mentioned in the intro, I mean, 2025 was a great year at the box office and
04:57it feels like coming out of COVID that wasn't necessarily the case. You know, it was really like
05:03a lost couple of years here and it took a while to get the traction back. And I wonder, you
05:08know,
05:08why you think we're seeing this moment now, whether or not it comes back to the fact that
05:12we are seeing interesting IP come to the wire. Yeah. I think you're also seeing an entirely new
05:18crop of stars. I think you're seeing Timothy, Michael, you know, Michael's your new Denzel,
05:25Timothy in his own category, your Zendaya's. So you're seeing a whole new generation for young people
05:31that are showing up and it's bringing all of them at the box office. And that's, what's really huge.
05:37So there was, there was kind of a break we had and now you can see a new guard coming
05:44in. And I
05:44think that's really powerful. Yeah. And even with the directors as well, and obviously things, I
05:49just, we'll only have about a second left, but do you think that we're going to see some shifts in
05:54the industry, given some of the consolidation, obviously with Warner Brothers, the movie studio
05:58now, I guess, potentially going under the umbrella of Paramount? Look, I think the beautiful thing that
06:03everyone is excited about is the fear that a streamer was going to further collapse windows.
06:09It looks like that threat is gone. Universal this week said they're committing to a 45 day window.
06:14So I think you're seeing everybody say, Hey, this industry is still strong. It went through some
06:20things. It needs some pruning of the tree, but I think it's doing quite well and it's come back.
06:25Have you ever had a chance to go to the Oscars? That's a sore subject. Oh, sorry. Okay.
06:31I haven't yet. Okay. We'll leave it there.
