00:10was a teenager back then, right between the 90s and early 2000s, so for me you were a hugely important
00:17filmmaker and screenwriter.
00:19Did you see Scream 1 first or Scream 2 first?
00:22No, I actually followed the order.
00:24Oh, you watched them in order? Okay, good.
00:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, I grew up with Scream, but I actually watched those on Scream much later, around 2019,
00:33and seeing them in this weird order, I realized how both they reflect on storytelling and cinema, just through very
00:41different genres.
00:43Is that a connection you still recognize today also with Scream 7?
00:47Well, sure. You know, it's just, that was my early voice. You know, it was the way I talked, it
00:53was the way I wrote, it was just, it was sort of, that sort of self-aware character was something
01:02that I think is very present in both the franchise, Scream, and Dawson's Creek.
01:08And, of course, in Dawson's Creek, you have the luxury of having Dawson, who is a film, a wannabe filmmaker,
01:13who speaks that speak anyway, and you have characters in Scream who just talk horror movies incessantly.
01:20So, there's a definite connection.
01:23So, and if one of Dawson's Creek characters secretly turned out to be Ghostface, who would actually make the most
01:29sense in your opinion?
01:31Wait, for a character in Dawson's Creek?
01:34Yeah, yeah. I think Dawson.
01:38If I have to be honest with you.
01:39I'm with you. Let's go with Dawson. I agree.
01:42I think it would be Dawson.
01:44Because, you know, he's the, he'd be the most exciting, he'd be the most unexpected.
01:49And just to see how he snaps and goes there would be fun.
01:54Yeah.
01:55So, you haven't directed a feature since teaching Mrs. Stingall.
01:59So, coming back to the direct screen, did it feel like stepping into a familiar territory?
02:04Or, like, rediscovering your own creation from a new angle?
02:09Well, it was certainly new and fresh, and I hadn't, I had not exercised those muscles in a long time.
02:14And cinema has changed since that film, all back then, way back when.
02:19But, you know, I also have 30 years of experience of storytelling under my belt.
02:25So, I didn't approach it with the fear that I had the first time.
02:28You know, this time I had excitement.
02:30This time I was like, oh, what can I do?
02:32How can I tell this story?
02:33How can I be unique to it?
02:34What can I bring to it that no one else can?
02:37What is it about me that makes me the person to direct Scream 7?
02:40And once I sort of, I just, and I thought, oh, well, it's Sidney Prescott.
02:45I can tell Sidney Prescott's story.
02:47And so, I'll do that.
02:49And so, I'm hoping that's what's unique about this Scream, because, you know, it is Scream 7.
02:54It's hard.
02:55And after 6, they went to New York.
02:56They had all the set pieces, and, I mean, that was awesome.
03:00So, I love 6.
03:03So, is there a specific lesson from Wes Craven that consciously guided you on set while directing Scream 7?
03:11When all else, just keep it real.
03:13Keep it human.
03:13Keep it emotional.
03:14Always go for the emotion.
03:16Don't, you know, even when you just want to go with the blood and the scare, there's time for all
03:20of that.
03:20But stick to the emotion.
03:21Stick to the emotional life of your character, and you will always be taking the right direction.
03:27And I just kind of, he always focused on that, and I always remembered that.
03:30And so, I really tried to adhere to that.
03:32I tried to adhere to that on the page as well.
03:36And after all these years, what still scares Kevin Williamson when it comes to horror genre?
03:43The horror genre, you know, I love vampires.
03:46I love supernatural.
03:48I love ghosts.
03:49I love demons.
03:50But the thing that scares me the most is just a guy hiding in your closet with a knife.
03:56That's what scares me.
03:57And so, the dark scares me.
03:59I always have to have lights on.
04:02I agree.
04:03So, I'm full of light in my office.
