00:00This whole film is an impossible dream.
00:03Am I here? Can I be here?
00:05Even though I was there when most of this was filmed,
00:09I still don't understand how it was done.
00:13That's how he sees himself. He sees himself as a performing monkey.
00:16The film is magic.
00:18I was completely convinced that we could tell this story
00:21and get people to invest emotionally
00:23if Weta were going to come on board to work on the visual effects.
00:26We usually do stunts and fights
00:29and then we were thrown into Dancing Apes.
00:33It's really just not how you would shoot a visual effects movie.
00:36Usually you try and make it as sterile and controllable in post as possible.
00:41And this was not that.
00:47At the one end of the scale, you've got a photorealistic chimpanzee
00:50and at the other end of the scale, you've got Robbie Williams.
00:52And where along that scale do we want to land?
00:56Can I kick it?
00:57Yes, you can!
00:59It's truly an honor to be able to play Robbie Williams.
01:02Jono, take it!
01:03I feel like I'm the first person alive
01:05that's performed in front of 20,000 people
01:08and doing performance capture.
01:11To have Jono playing that role
01:14and giving us all that incredible powerhouse performance on set,
01:18we were just incredibly fortunate
01:20that we had both Jono and Weta.
01:22One, two, three, four!
01:23It's sort of blending the skills that we have at Weta
01:26into this one character
01:27and they're taking it further because we've never done singing.
01:30But when I rock the mic, I rock the mic.
01:33We had to do a lot of motion studies there
01:34to sort of work out how you convincingly
01:37make all that sound and all that energy
01:39and all that breath come out of this CG character.
01:41It's not just moving the lips so much more than that.
01:44It's the chest and the breathing and the posture
01:46and the strain in the eyes and brows and stuff.
01:49All that tells that these songs are emerging out of this character.
01:52I don't wanna lie!
01:53Weta Digital and all the artists there,
01:56I owe so much to all of those people
01:58who came together to make this happen.
02:00And that's what makes this so special.
02:01Cause you're keeping me up all night.
