00:06So in the beginning, the movie is a bad movie, like Bad Boys or Little Weapon.
00:12Did you take inspiration from 90s action movies?
00:16Oh, 100%.
00:17We are 90s action movies.
00:20Huge fans of all of those movies.
00:22And so you'll say, I mean, there's direct references.
00:24We have our new Mare Wind Dancer, who stars in basically a 90s action comedy.
00:30So I think we, you know, as we step into the world of Zootopia,
00:33something that I really love is that there's always nods to films and filmmakers that we love
00:38that made an impact on us growing up.
00:40Yeah, even when we talked to our composer, Michael Giacchino, about the 90s action movies and TV series,
00:45he was like, oh boy.
00:46He was really excited.
00:48So that's his era.
00:49He's so happy about that.
00:51I like it so much.
00:52Giacchino score.
00:54How did you work on the music, Byron, Jared?
00:57Yeah, no, the music is just an amazing thing.
00:59Michael is the most versatile composer I think we know of.
01:02We don't know that anyone else could have done this score because it really demands that
01:06you have to be comfortable in every different style of music.
01:08There's jazz, there's improvisational stuff, there's Bayou, Louisiana, stuff from the swamps
01:15and stuff and then there's these enormous themes that he wrote for Gary and the Lynxes
01:21that feel like Hollywood themes from, you know, just classic Hollywood themes that have always
01:27existed like Godfather level stuff and he can pull that all out and we're just so impressed
01:32with him as a partner.
01:34Zootopia was the first Disney film he had ever scored for Disney Animation and so to kind
01:39of get back and work this with him was just a pleasure.
01:43Yeah, it's also unbelievably collaborative.
01:45So when they're recording the score, we're there with him and we're talking about the
01:50story moving through and one of the amazing skills that he has is as he's watching it,
01:55he'll ask us questions emotionally about things that are going on for the characters
01:58and he'll change the score in the moment in real time.
02:01So we'll have 80 musicians there and he'll say, actually, I think emotionally this needs
02:05to happen and he'll tell the violins to play something completely different in the moment
02:09and they'll do it and that's what's in the movie now.
02:10It's unbelievable.
02:12Each animal reflects a human personality.
02:17It's incredible.
02:17How did you work on this aspect?
02:20Oh, I mean, you know, we love animals.
02:23It's our favorite thing.
02:24Even before this movie, we are giant animal nerds.
02:27When we stepped into this new movie, we really try to think about what is the personality of
02:33an animal that we're bringing in.
02:35There's an animal called a quokka.
02:37It's the cutest animal.
02:38It's like a little tiny wallaby, like a little kangaroo.
02:41It's known to be like the sweetest animal in the world.
02:43We thought, well, if we're going to have an animal therapist, it's going to have to be
02:46this cute little quokka that comes in.
02:48We have antagonists in this story that are lynxes and that was important because we have
02:54reptiles in this movie.
02:55Reptiles need warmth.
02:57Lynxes love the cold and so that felt like a good contrast there on top of the fact that in
03:02in the real world, lynxes, 90% of what they eat are rabbits and we have a main character
03:06who's a rabbit.
03:07So we're really thoughtful and spend months and months and months researching animals to
03:11make sure those are the right ones to put into the story.
03:14The movie says that appearance can be deciding, which is very relevant.
03:20Today, what do you think about it?
03:23Yeah, no, I think the whole idea that the movie is about differences is very important.
03:27It's about Judy and Nick learning about the differences between them.
03:29It's about the sort of society coming to grips with differences in what they believe.
03:33Even the fact that one of our heroes in this movie is a snake.
03:37Not everybody loves snakes in the real world.
03:40They're very different.
03:41They're not kind of warm and fuzzy.
03:43But there's something that's just so magical about Kiwi Kwan's voice with Gary that really
03:49became an emotional center for the storytelling.
03:53And it's like, even if you don't love snakes in real life, I guarantee you, if you watch this
03:57movie, you will fall in love with Gary the snake.
03:59And it's just wonderful to see his journey with bringing his family back to Zootopia.
