00:00Chris, I know you're no stranger to playing a first responder of sorts.
00:03What appealed to you about joining 9-1-1 Nashville?
00:07Well, the initial appeal was, are you interested in doing a Ryan Murphy show in Nashville?
00:12And the Ryan Murphy part was easy. He's, you know, just been prolific and so creative.
00:18And the Nashville idea was a nice change of scenery, frankly, after just having lived through the Palisades fires.
00:24And so it was kind of an easy decision, although I didn't know exactly what I was getting myself into
00:31as I'd never really seen much of the original show.
00:33That must have been a pretty big shock when you're reading some of these scripts.
00:36People that know me and follow me, and it's always a big, he's playing a fireman, you know, they don't
00:40realize how insane these emergencies are.
00:43I mean, like the crazier the storyline, the better. That's like the brand of the show.
00:46And it's, it's, it's very entertaining. But it was even for me, I was going, wait, I'm sorry, what happened?
00:52And I would, and I would call our showrunner and he's like, no, no, no, this, this is actually based
00:56in reality.
00:57This, something like this, very similar happened. I said, okay, I'll, I'll go with it.
01:02It is so fun to watch Jessica Capshaw and Leanne Rimes spar over your character.
01:07And what rules might you be referring to exactly?
01:11The one where you stay away from my husband.
01:15Isn't there one where you stay away from me?
01:17Well, I just came here to be civil.
01:19Civil's never been one of my strong suits.
01:22What's it like working with these dynamic women?
01:24Well, it's very normal. I'm so used to having women fighting over me.
01:26It's just felt very natural. It's been great.
01:29Jessica, I had met over the years.
01:31We overlapped on like the practice and Grey's Anatomy,
01:35although we were never in scenes together.
01:37And she also used to live in our neighborhood.
01:39So she knew my wife and I think we have two kids that are the same age.
01:44And Leanne's awesome. Leanne's just got an energy about her.
01:47She's so perfect at playing Dixie.
01:50And the two of them together, it makes for some pretty good fireworks.
01:56You've got a few sons yourself, but your on-screen boys, Michael Provost and Hunter McVeigh,
02:02are really just starting to find themselves in this industry.
02:05Did they come to you for advice, be it for on-screen stuff or their careers in general?
02:11Well, I think they're at different stages.
02:13Michael's, you know, been doing this for a while.
02:15Hunter, this is literally his first gig.
02:17I mean, he sent in a tape for The Love Story, the JFK show.
02:22He's, you know, he just said, I've never acted, but people have told me I look a little bit like
02:25JFK.
02:26So he sent a tape into Ryan's office.
02:28And that's ultimately how they found him,
02:30because they were having trouble finding somebody for that role.
02:33And the casting director said, what about that kid?
02:35And they had remembered him.
02:36And next thing you know, he's making a TV show.
02:40But he's a really smart guy.
02:42I mean, you sit and talk to him, he'll start going on any subject you want.
02:48So he's figuring it out quickly.
02:50I do want to talk about Don Begins, which focuses on Don and Dixie's origin story.
02:55Leanne told me that she had no idea how they met or what their background was.
03:00Did you have the similar experience?
03:01Yeah.
03:01I mean, you know, you talk about it, when this is coming together, just talking with the writers,
03:07they're figuring it out, too.
03:08And they're open to ideas.
03:09And you're trying to establish as much as you can before you start filming.
03:14But then all of a sudden, that episode came out, the script came out.
03:18Like, okay, that explains a lot.
03:20And I think that it was especially, because initially you're thinking, Dixie, she's the bad girl, and, you know, boo,
03:27you know, we're all team blight.
03:29You kind of are rooting for Dixie, because you realize what a connection Don and Dixie had.
03:34And they were, you know, young and in love, and circumstances brought, you know, separated them.
03:40And their lives went in different directions.
03:43But there was a genuine connection there.
03:45I do want to get into this week's episode, Small Potatoes.
03:48It kicks off with Don finding out about Blue and Taylor's relationship.
03:53How fun was shooting that sequence?
03:55The fans have been responding well to that.
03:59And it's all, I mean, this is what's interesting when you're doing a show like this.
04:02So much has to happen in the first season to establish the characters and so much back history.
04:08We've just met my son, Blue.
04:10You know, and we don't even know my relationship with Taylor, but now it's all coming together, and they're an
04:17item.
04:17So that's the trick with all these shows is getting the audience to fall in love with the characters
04:21and hope that they'll go on a ride with you for many seasons to come.
04:26But, yeah, they just, you know, the writers can set something up and set a relationship up.
04:31And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
04:33And they just happen to have good chemistry together.
04:35Last week was the 9-1-1, 9-1-1 Nashville finally crossed over.
04:40You know, how fun was it to film the firefighter games and to work with Oliver and Ryan?
04:45Oliver and Ryan were amazing sports coming in.
04:48You know, they're filming their show at the same time and made the trek into Nashville and just had, you
04:54know,
04:54they've been doing that show for nine years.
04:55This is, they're the OG cast, and they came onto our show with no ego, no special requests, no demands.
05:01They were just team players from day one, and, you know, I've been through this before.
05:06It's a lot to ask people to come from another show and guests because it's a huge boost for us
05:12to have them jump on our show for an episode.
05:14You know, great guys, they had to come back a second time because we didn't get through all the action
05:18sequences,
05:19and it was miserably cold, but they were total pros.
05:23What can you tease for Don, his family, and the 1-13 going forward?
05:29We are setting up serious cliffhanger, and now that we've been picked up for second season, it will not disappoint.
05:38Yeah, it's, they just keep coming up with these amazingly big, over-the-top events, and another one's coming.
