00:14Why can't you be a normal person with normal friends?
00:20So, Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits is the work of a genius.
00:25You are both geniuses too, but I guess it was not an easy task to adapt to the film in
00:30a series.
00:31How did you work on it?
00:36Well, I think when you're adapting anything, you have to, at some point you have to let go of the
00:42original thing and try and do your own version.
00:46Whilst staying true to the original seeds of the idea and the heart and the soul of the original.
00:53But yeah, you have to allow yourself permission to kind of, yeah, to let go of it.
01:00Yeah, you know it will be different. It's not Terry Gilliam, it's us.
01:04And we hope we will capture some of that energy and humor.
01:13But yeah, we just have to imagine it's a new thing.
01:20How did you choose where and when to travel in order to develop the story?
01:25I think that started off just as a big list of places that we'd like to see in a show
01:32or places we've always wanted to go or places that might be cool to build and to film.
01:39One thing I did is when we were writing the pilot, I asked my son, who was Kevin's age at
01:45the time, what he'd like to see, what historical figures he'd like to see.
01:50And the first one he said was Madame Chung, which was one of the most successful pirates in history.
01:58She had a fleet of pirates bigger than the Chinese army.
02:04So he wanted to see that and he wanted to see maybe some Neanderthals.
02:11I can't remember what other ones he wanted to see, but took a few from him and then a few
02:18from us.
02:19And then just like looking through interesting historical times, like who was the richest person ever in history that thieves
02:30could target.
02:31And it was a Malian king, Mansa Musa, who's thought to be richer than anyone, even today.
02:41So that's why we're in medieval Africa, things like that.
02:47Also wanted to have a good variety that we're moving around and in times go from 60,000 years.
02:54Earlier, we go from 70 million years ago to the 90s, 1990s.
03:02You're telling the adventures of a bizarre group of people.
03:06Can you tell us something about the casting process for them?
03:11Yeah, we just wanted an eclectic mix of actors and obviously a diverse mix as well.
03:19We knew that obviously the character of Kevin would stay the same, that we wanted a kid to go on
03:25these adventures.
03:27And then when we started thinking about the team of bandits, one of the first people to come to mind
03:34was Lisa Kudrow, who I always really admired and wanted to work with.
03:39And just wanted to, I just thought it'd just be really funny to see someone like her leading this band
03:45of fools, trying to commit crimes through time.
03:51We basically cast the nicest, least criminal type of actors we could find to become thieves.
04:01One last quick question, if you could travel in time, where would you go?
04:09Yeah, we were just talking about this, we'd like to, I think we'd both like to see the first times
04:15that people try things, you know, like the first person to make a boat, see the failed attempts, those kind
04:25of things.
04:26What's some other firsts?
04:29I'd like to go back to 1983.
04:32First person to try and sing.
04:34Oh yeah, 1983.
04:35I'd like to go to 1983.
04:37You were already in 1983.
04:39No, no, I want to go back and change something.
04:41I want to go back and tell Nicola Slater that she's making a big mistake by breaking up with me.
