00:01Non voglio dire che quello che è successo non sia stato traumatico.
00:04Finire dove siamo finite.
00:06In mezzo al nulla.
00:07Strappate via dalle vite che avevamo lasciato a mezzo.
00:16From your different points of view as an actress and showrunner,
00:21what was the biggest challenge of this series?
00:24Shooting in New Zealand on those beaches.
00:29It is the most beautiful, it is perfection and the only place we could have shot it,
00:35but it was raining and cold and we were fine as behind the camera,
00:40but those eight women having to take off those parkas and Uggs
00:44and pretend they were on a hot island,
00:47I tip my hat to those young women every single day.
00:51But that was, I think, the most challenging.
00:53Look, honestly, it was 99% just a joy.
00:59Like, you know, there are roles that you really, you know,
01:06have to tear yourself up over.
01:08There's, you know, shooting conditions that you have to submit to,
01:12which I didn't.
01:13There are bosses that are stupid and don't understand what you're dealing with
01:18as a working mother who's trying to work in a transcontinental way.
01:23These are the usual.
01:24There are directors who are incompetent.
01:26None of those things were true on this show.
01:30It was absolute joy.
01:32But I think in the back of my mind, it was always to just be surprising.
01:38I'm certainly, if I have ever, you know, a role where I end up as a cookie cutter
01:45villain type or I don't like an audience to be able to reduce me or box me.
01:51I like to keep escaping boxes I've put myself in.
01:56And I think, you know, look, I've been working in television long enough
02:00as a co-creator now too and as an executive producer and I'm a massive TV watcher.
02:07To keep surprising an audience is one of the most kind of generous things you can do,
02:13you know, for a television audience.
02:15I'm always trying to pull some rabbit out of the hat.
02:20Well, I mean, just professionally speaking, being so far away from friends and family,
02:24I mean, you're literally on the other side of the world.
02:26And, you know, shooting in one of the most beautiful places in the world was amazing.
02:29But still, you know, similarly to these girls, you're pulled away from your comfort zone.
02:36You're pulled away from your friends and family.
02:37And you have to learn to adapt.
02:39Not saying that, you know, spending four months in an apartment with Troy
02:43is like being stranded on a deserted island.
02:47But there are, you know, there are human, there are very human emotions and feelings.
02:52Like, I'm out here by myself.
02:54Even though I'm surrounded with these people, I'm out here by myself.
02:57So for me, the main challenge was just being so far away.
03:00The seasonal changes for me, it was kind of weird.
03:04Because right now, we're going into winter.
03:07And right now, it's summer over there.
03:08Yeah.
03:10I was, we were downtown Auckland.
03:13And I saw Christmas trees.
03:15And I was just like, what?
03:16Christmas trees?
03:17Why is it Christmas?
03:18But it was December.
03:19It was like December 25th.
03:20I was like, it's Christmas.
03:21But people are on the beach.
03:23I'm just like, this is so weird.
03:27But, you know, it's, it was, it was welcome because, you know, I kind of love the, to travel
03:32a little.
03:34And now, you know, I have a little son now.
03:37I want him to explore the world.
03:39So, but as David was saying, that flight is very, very long.
03:45Very, very long.
03:46Amazon is not covering all the tickets.
03:51But, but yeah, so, you know, being away from friends, family, home, it's, it's, it's, it's
03:58challenging.
03:58But the reward is so much greater once you see what we, we've done.
04:02How did you work together to define Rachel's character?
04:06What can you tell about her?
04:07When I signed on to this, it was very unrealized.
04:12So I had this thing of signing on to a show because I love this script so much.
04:18It was like the best television pilot I'd read in five years.
04:22And I leapt in, I really did not know who I was playing.
04:27And I thought that they'll figure it out.
04:30These people will figure it out.
04:32And then Amy came in after the pilot.
04:35So take it from there, Amy.
04:37Yeah.
04:38So she was a bit of an unknown when we started breaking the series because she's only in
04:43that one real scene in the pilot.
04:47Sarah Stryker, who created the show, had a very good sense of what she, why she put those
04:52women on the island.
04:54And then we really just focused on, this is a woman who has a cause.
05:02And some people would call her a zealot.
05:03I think she would say that was a positive.
05:06And she believes that whatever happens on this island and the losses that may come, that
05:13she has a bigger plan and something that will help more people.
05:18I read this thing about, like, if there was a Picasso in a house and a child and it was
05:24burning, which would you get?
05:26And someone, people say the child.
05:29And then someone says, well, if you save the Picasso, you could have $50 million if you
05:33sold it and save many more children.
05:36So I think that is a little bit Gretchen's point of view.
05:40Really, for us, we got so lucky because to have Rachel, who brings such a depth of humanity
05:44to the character, we never wanted her to be a villain.
05:47We wanted her to be perhaps misguided, the way she's attacking this experiment, but her
05:56desires were always positive.
05:58Whether or not she can hold on to that as the series continues is a question.
06:02How did you get involved in this project?
06:04What attracted you over the while?
06:06Yeah, I think with any project, as actors, we're sent a script.
06:10We're sent a script and we're sent an opportunity to audition.
06:14And a lot of times we get scripts that are bad and a lot of times we get scripts that
06:18are really good.
06:19And a lot of times when you get a script that's really good, that offer's already gone out
06:24to Ryan Phillippe or that offer's already gone out to a really famous person.
06:31But this was an opportunity where I got a really good script and it was a really good
06:34audition.
06:34And I was like, man, if I have an opportunity to play this role, I think I can do really
06:38something special with it.
06:40And so, yeah, I, you know, like any actor, we go in and we hope for the best and then
06:46we get called back and we do it again and we get called back.
06:48We do it again.
06:48So, yeah, that's kind of how we or I got involved.
06:52Yeah.
06:53Ditto.
06:54Same here.
06:55It was a good project, good script, good people behind it.
06:58And it was an easy decision to take it, even though it's in New Zealand, which is halfway
07:04around the world.
07:04but it's a beautiful place and beautiful people and doing stuff like this, you really
07:11probably want to get a chance to spend extended amount of time in vacation spots.
07:16So it's a good, it's a good choice, a good choice on both of our parts to kind of experience
07:22different cultures and different, different, different places.
07:25What do you like most of your characters?
07:29Do you have something in common with them?
07:32I love my vulnerability, which I did not know I had, kind of piggybacking on the question
07:37before.
07:38This process kind of moved kind of quickly for us.
07:40So when we showed up, it wasn't that our characters weren't developed, but, you know,
07:46it was more so let's play and see what we get.
07:51You won't see the evolution of, I guess, our characters a little until later on in the
07:56episodes, but my vulnerability in this particular show, it's, it's unbelievable because I was
08:03kind of brought to my attention.
08:05It was kind of brought to my attention, like in episode six or seven, that my whole character
08:09and my mindset sort of changed.
08:11And I was just like, wow, where did this come from?
08:14So, um, I don't want to give too much away, but it's, uh, it's, I have an affinity for
08:20these girls and, but that relates to my background and my history.
08:24And, um, and I guess we'll explore that in season two, but the opportunity to have that
08:30is, is actually excellent to work with.
08:33Yeah.
08:33I really like Faber's, uh, um, desire for his search for truth.
08:38Um, I think he, in his, in his mind, he has an idea of, of what the truth actually is.
08:44and what's going on with these girls, but as, as the series goes on, the truth kind
08:49of evolves from, okay, well, I'm seeing one thing, but like they're experiencing something
08:53different.
08:54So I think just, yeah, see his search for truth is what I really like about him.
08:59Thank you so much.
09:00Thank you.
09:01Goodbye.
09:03Be safe.
09:04Nice to meet you.
09:05Goodbye.
09:06Bye-bye.
09:07Bye-bye.
09:07Sua figlia ha fatto un passo indietro da un buio precedente.
09:12Ci sentiamo molto in colpa per averle mentito.
09:15L'avete fatto per salvarla.
09:17I feel broken.
