Alan Ritchson Pulls Off a Wild Underwater Take in War Machine
Transcript
00:00Are you in gear? I'm in gear. Okay. Okay, ready? Now gently apply. Wait, I'm going to put my seatbelt
00:05on for real. Fuck you. I don't trust you. I do not trust you. Now slowly apply acceleration. Oh man,
00:12this thing's got some dough.
00:14What a really big, important scene. We have this epic montage where I just put Alan through the absolute paces
00:20in the film, right? That's right. Yeah.
00:22I put you through the absolute paces and it builds towards a climactic moment, which is this scene here in
00:27the pool.
00:30And this is 81 as he walks along the bottom of the pool holding weights. Now I found this exercise
00:37in research and I thought, oh, that's really interesting. Beautiful storytelling device.
00:41Because the fun fact about this exercise is that no one is the winner, right? It's essentially is to see
00:50how far you can go. What is your breaking point?
00:52And then that's the ultimate test that these candidates are faced with. So it's to push yourself as far as
01:01you can go before you come up for air.
01:03The only problem is, is that this scene became a visual representation of 81's inner turmoil because he's driven by
01:12Shane.
01:12So while these other candidates are coming up, 81 keeps going.
01:19Now the fun fact about that, the fun fact about that setup is that when we set this shot up,
01:25I had Alan in the pool and I told him, I said, listen, I'm going to, I'm going to shoot.
01:31I've set up a camera operator. We're underwater and he's at the halfway mark. I don't expect you'll get there.
01:38Right.
01:38I'll show you the exact shot here because you can see it on his face. This shot here. Yeah.
01:44That one right there. That's the moment there. So Alan, I told you, right? I said, Alan, jump in. See
01:50how far you can walk.
01:51He goes, I'll cut it up for you. You know, Dory, if you have to give up and we do
01:54this in a couple of takes, feel free to give up.
01:56Yeah. And I was just looking for the shot. Right. And then Alan jumped in and then he walked so
02:03far in that pool, literally like it was almost a two minute take,
02:07that he ended up walking the entire length of the pool and walked straight into my camera operator here in
02:13this shot here.
02:14So if we pull up the rushes on that, he's walked so far up the pool.
02:18My camera operator was backing up with an underwater housing and then we couldn't communicate with Alan because he's underwater.
02:25Alan can't see because he doesn't, he's not wearing goggles.
02:28And he ended up walking straight into that camera operator who backed up all the way back into a far
02:33wall and ran out of room.
02:35I was channeling 81 that day for sure. I know. I was like, cannot repeat that.
