00:00Is your Windows 11 computer running super slow?
00:03Do you open Task Manager and see that dreaded 100% disk usage staring back at you?
00:09It's incredibly frustrating.
00:11I know, you can't open programs.
00:14Files take forever to load, and your whole system feels like it's stuck in mud.
00:18But don't worry, you're in the right place.
00:21Today, I am going to walk you through several effective methods to fix this problem for good and get your
00:26PC running smoothly again.
00:28Let's dive right in.
00:29First things first, let's identify the culprit.
00:32Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl, Shift, and Escape.
00:37Click on the disk column to sort by usage.
00:39What's at the top of the list?
00:41Sometimes it's a specific app, but often you'll see something called System or Service Host.
00:47This tells us that a background, Windows Service, is likely the cause.
00:51The most common offenders are services related to searching, system maintenance, and notifications.
00:56So, our first method is to tackle the Windows Search Service.
01:00This service is constantly indexing your files to make searching faster, but it can sometimes go haywire and monopolize your
01:08disk.
01:08To disable it temporarily and see if it helps, press the Windows key in order to open the Run dialog.
01:15Type Services, Messy, and hit Enter.
01:19Scroll down until you find Windows Search.
01:23Right-click on it, select Properties, and change the Startup Type to Disabled.
01:28Then, click Stop to halt the service immediately, and click Apply.
01:32Give your computer a moment.
01:34If you see the disk usage drop significantly, you've found one of the main issues.
01:38Next up is Superfetch, or as it's now called in Windows 11, C.
01:44This service is designed to preload your most frequently used apps into Run to speed up launch times.
01:50But on systems, with slower hard drives, or even some SSDs, it can cause more harm than good, leading to
01:57high disk activity.
01:59Let's disable it.
02:01In that same services window, find Seismain.
02:05Just like before, right-click Go to Properties, set the Startup Type to Disabled, and 10-click Stop and Apply.
02:13Many people find this single-fix solves their 100% disk usage problem instantly.
02:19If you're still facing issues, let's check your power plan settings.
02:23Believe it or not, this can have an impact.
02:26Go to your Start menu, and type Edit Power Plan.
02:29Then, select Italiana.
02:31In the new window, click on Change Advanced Power Settings.
02:35A small window will pop up.
02:37Scroll down, and expand PCI Express.
02:40Then, expand Link State Power Management.
02:43If the setting is on Moderate or Maximum Power Savings, change it to Off.
02:48This prevents your disk controller from going into a low-power state,
02:52which can sometimes cause latency and high usage when it tries to wake back up.
02:56Click Apply and OK.
02:58Another potential fix is to disable some diagnostic and feedback settings that can run in the background.
03:05Go, so, settings.
03:07Then, Privacy and Security.
03:10And find Diagnostics and Feedback.
03:13Make sure Send Optional Diagnostic Data is torn it off.
03:16While you're in the Privacy and Security section,
03:19you can also go through General and turn off all the Advertising ID and Tracking options.
03:23These little things can add up and contribute to unnecessary background activity.
03:27Finally, let's run a check on the health of your disk itself.
03:32An old or failing hard drive can cause 100% usage simply because it has struggling to read and write
03:37data.
03:37Open Command Prompt as an Administrator.
03:40You can do this by searching for CMD in the Start menu, right-clicking it, and selecting Run as Administrator.
03:47In the black window, type CHK DSK F per R and press Enter.
03:52It will likely tell you that ECHO YEN RUN because the volume is in use and will ask if you
03:56want to schedule it for the next restart.
03:58Type Y for Yes and press Enter.
04:02Now, just to restart your computer.
04:04This process will scan your drive for errors in bad sectors and try to repair them.
04:09It can take a while.
04:12So be patient.
04:14By working through these steps disabling problematic services, adjusting your power settings, tweaking privacy options,
04:21and checking your disk health, you should be able to get that 100% disk usage issue under control.
04:26Your computer will thank you for it with faster, smoother performance.
