00:12As less and less of our funds come from the state government, how do we, first of all, maintain our
00:16preeminence, but secondly, how do we guarantee our public character, because we must not compromise on that.
00:22As I've said often, the country has many great private universities, Stanford, Harvard, etc., and it doesn't need another one.
00:30It needs great public universities. And how are we going to do that in an environment where the state is
00:35progressively disinvesting?
00:37What is it about Berkeley, right, that stands out, that's different from some other universities?
00:44What are we trying to do?
00:45There is something about Berkeley that's different, a sense of the future, a diversity, and a sense of an ideal.
00:53And that ideal really was that people should be able to study, even if they weren't members of an elite,
01:02that people should have different kinds of ideas, that somehow this would be for the future of the state of
01:08California and the future of a very diverse population.
01:14Don't you wanna go?
01:15Don't you wanna go?
01:17Don't you wanna go?
01:18I wanna go.
01:18I wanna go up the ladder to the road.
