00:00Best Actor nominee Timothee Chalamet is the main character in a real-life controversy
00:04after saying no one cares about opera or ballet.
00:08Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at instances from the past few years
00:12that epitomized A-list actors at their most arrogant.
00:16The feed goes silent, and so does the audience
00:19after Will Smith takes a swing at Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars.
00:25Number 10. Sean Penn smokes at Golden Globes.
00:28You're not allowed to have a cigarette pretty much anywhere these days, except if you're Sean Penn.
00:33For all the nominations he's racked up throughout his career, Sean Penn only occasionally attends award shows.
00:39Even when he does, the celebrated actor has repeatedly demonstrated that he doesn't care what others think.
00:44Penn lived up to his bad boy reputation at the 83rd Golden Globes,
00:48where he was nominated for supporting work in one battle after another.
00:51He didn't win, but Penn made headlines for reportedly lighting up a cigarette and smoking at his table.
00:56Although staff allegedly asked Penn not to smoke inside the venue, the warnings didn't faze him.
01:01He supposedly helped himself to multiple cigs throughout the evening, flicking the old ones into water glasses.
01:07As one insider put it, rules clearly don't apply to A-list rebels like Sean Penn.
01:11Meanwhile Sean Penn is like, what if I slowly morph into a sexy leather handbag?
01:15Number 9. Demi Lovato triggered by frozen yogurt.
01:19Aside from singing and acting, Demi Lovato's candidness about eating disorders and mental health struggles has inspired many.
01:25Yet, some felt Lovato crossed the line in 2021, waging a viral war against a small fro-yo shop, The
01:32Big Chill.
01:32The controversy was ignited after Demi told her 102 million Instagram followers that she was finding it extremely hard to
01:40order fro-yo from The Big Chill
01:41when you have to walk past tons of sugar-free cookies, diet foods, before you get to the counter.
01:47In a video, Lovato criticized the store's diet food options like sugar-free cookies, saying this made it extremely hard
01:53to order.
01:53Do better, please, and labeled it hashtag diet culture vultures.
01:57After Lovato accused them of being diet culture vultures, and insisting that they do better, the establishment responded on Instagram.
02:04We carry items for diabetics, celiac disease, vegan, and of course, have many indulgent items as well.
02:10I don't understand why she felt the need to go after them like this.
02:14Lovato was spotted at the shop four years later, apparently settling their differences.
02:18Some still side with the store, feeling that Lovato should have chilled out.
02:22Number 8. Quentin Tarantino critiques other actors.
02:25He is weak sauce, man.
02:28The iconic director igniting a firestorm on the Brett Easton Ellis podcast in December.
02:34In addition to being one of our greatest filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino has acted in several projects, with varying degrees of
02:40success.
02:41You ain't got nothing to say I want to hear.
02:43Since Tarantino's performances are hit or miss, it's probably not his place to throw shade at other actors.
02:48That didn't stop Tarantino from giving hot takes on actors he doesn't care for.
02:52On a podcast, Tarantino ranked his favorite 21st century movies, saying that he would have placed There Will Be Blood
02:58higher if it were for Paul Dano.
03:00F*** that guy. He must have been high. It was just confusing. Who does that?
03:05Not only did Tarantino call Dano the film's weak link, but the weakest actor in SAG.
03:11Tarantino also criticized Matthew Lillard and Owen Wilson, intensifying the backlash.
03:16He has a right to his opinion, but when you're in a position like Tarantino's, maybe avoid broadcasting that opinion.
03:21Anybody that knows Quentin knows he just talks, talks, talks, talks, talks, talks, talks, right?
03:25Anybody that knows Paul knows he's a great world-class human being.
03:29And, you know, and all this love for Paul's coming out.
03:31And it's a great lesson in that.
03:33You don't have to worry about the negativity that people send your way.
03:36Number seven, Jeremy Strong on the stakes of acting.
03:39Do you want to call your dad?
03:42Do I want to call my dad?
03:44No, I don't want to call my dad.
03:46Performing is tough, but it's not like actors risk their lives, unless they're Tom Cruise.
03:51Last we checked, Jeremy Strong hasn't hung off a plane, even if he is a committed method actor.
03:56I'm the eldest boy!
03:58God!
03:59I am the eldest boy!
04:01In a 2021 New Yorker interview, Strong discussed his Emmy-winning role as Kendall Roy on Succession,
04:06saying,
04:07To me, the stakes are life and death.
04:09I take him as seriously as I take my own life.
04:12Method actors often get flack for coming off as pretentious, self-congratulatory,
04:16and not nearly as brave as they think they are.
04:18Even Strong Succession co-star Brian Cox has taken issue with his method, commenting,
04:23He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that.
04:26I trusted my father.
04:27That's a black mark?
04:28It's an accumulation.
04:30Number six, Joaquin Phoenix pulls out of movie.
04:33Sometimes, a movie doesn't get made without a big name attached.
04:37Such was the case with a then-untitled Todd Haynes picture, centered on a romance between two men.
04:42Haynes' movie was set to focus on an intense gay romance in the 1930s.
04:46The film was to star Danny Ramirez and Joaquin Phoenix, the latter of whom worked on the script with Haynes.
04:51Phoenix seemed to be all-in, encouraging Haynes to incorporate material that had likely resulted in an NC-17 rating.
04:58This made it all the more shocking when Phoenix backed out five days before shooting, reportedly getting cold feet.
05:04Reports surfaced on Friday that Phoenix exited the drama feature just five days before filming was set to begin in
05:10Guadalajara, Mexico.
05:11The role will not be recast.
05:13Without Phoenix, the film risked losing financing, leaving the crew out of work, and stakeholders unpaid.
05:19The film was reportedly revived under the title De Noche, with Pedro Pascal now in the lead.
05:24That doesn't make Phoenix's actions any less inconsiderate.
05:34Number 5.
05:35Carlos Sofia Gascon compares herself to Gandhi.
05:38People have mixed thoughts on Emilia Perez, to put it mildly.
05:42And yes, yes, I think about it.
05:44And I regret it.
05:48Regardless, star Carlos Sofia Gascon made history as the first openly transgender performer to get nominated for an Oscar, achieving
05:56A-list status.
05:57What are you going to do with me?
05:59Recuperate the wool that you took me.
06:03The goodwill toward Gascon immediately dried up, when a series of hateful tweets resurfaced.
06:09While this would always be hard to come back from, Gascon would have saved face if she had chosen her
06:13next words carefully, expressing genuine remorse.
06:16Despite technically apologizing, many felt that Gascon made herself out to be the victim in all of this, saying,
06:22I find it totally unfair to be labeled a racist.
06:25What's more, Gascon said that she was less racist than Gandhi, which we're just going to respond to with this
06:30Simpsons clip.
06:31Ugh, the idea that you would compare yourself to Mahatma Gandhi!
06:35Number 4.
06:36James Corden.
06:38Bad customer?
06:39I've been walking around thinking that I hadn't done anything wrong.
06:41This comedian isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the Carpool Karaoke Guy didn't strike us as someone who'd become synonymous
06:47with poor patronage.
06:49James Corden's public image was forever changed in 2022, when New York City restaurateur Keith McNally accused him of being
06:56extremely nasty to staff members.
06:58Corden was supposedly more than a little critical of food errors, leading to a temporary ban.
07:02The owner of the restaurant had heard what happened, and he Instagrammed that I was banned from his restaurant for
07:09two offenses.
07:10One was a meal that I think was back in 2014, when I sent a dish back that had hair
07:16in it, and the other was last week.
07:19McNally described the Late Late Show host as the most abusive customer to his servers in nearly two and a
07:24half decades.
07:25Despite saying, I haven't done anything wrong on any level, Corden reportedly apologized profusely.
07:31I hope I'm allowed in again one day, so when I'm back in New York, I can go there and
07:37apologize in person, which is something I will absolutely do.
07:41Corden had already announced that he'd be leaving his show the following year, which might have been for the best,
07:45with his likability called into question.
07:47Going back to London, are they like, welcome back? Do they reclaim you warmly?
07:53Yeah, I mean, people are very nice, but no one believes that I wasn't fired.
08:00Number 3. Timothee Chalamet Enrages Opera and Ballet Communities
08:04Before even turning 30, Timothee Chalamet was already one of our most accomplished working actors.
08:10I ask nothing of you, only that you will always speak to me clear and true.
08:18There are times, though, when it feels like Chalamet is getting in the way of his own success.
08:22Not unlike his character in Marty Supreme, you get the sense that Chalamet wants to be taken seriously as one
08:27of the greats.
08:28Now look at this, the Norwich Ball, which no one's ever thought of.
08:31See, you're already following it way better. Look at his eyes. You're looking more engaged now.
08:34Chalamet didn't help his case when he implied in an interview that no one cares about ballet or opera.
08:39But the clip has spread like wildfire in recent days and ignited backlash from the performing arts community.
08:46Ballet and opera aren't niche hobbies people opt out of for fame.
08:51They're disciplines you can only enter if you have the rare ability for them.
08:56Well, numerous people do care, from those who work in those industries to patrons of the arts.
09:01They didn't hold back in telling Chalamet how they felt.
09:04And the Seattle Opera trolling the star by offering 14% off seats for their weekend performances with promo code
09:12TIMOTHY.
09:12Chalamet seemed to know his comment would ignite some backlash, but he likely underestimated just how many ballet and opera
09:18fans there are.
09:19The 30-year-old Chalamet is a self-proclaimed arts kid.
09:22I grew up backstage at the New York City Ballet. My grandmother danced in New York City Ballet. My mother
09:26danced in New York City Ballet. My sister danced in New York City Ballet.
09:28The big question now, could this cost Chalamet the Oscar?
09:31Number 2. Pretty much everything Ezra Miller did.
09:35From encounters with the authorities in Hawaii, to allegations of harassment in Massachusetts, to burglary charges in Vermont, 2022 was
09:42one scandal after another for Ezra Miller.
09:45Even The Flash would have trouble keeping up with the headlines.
09:48Oh my god! Flash!
09:51Hi.
09:52I love you!
09:53After months of controversy, Miller finally issued an apology, citing complex mental health issues.
09:58While mental health is an important factor to consider, it doesn't completely absolve Miller of accountability,
10:03especially considering how long the reported misconduct persisted and how many people across the country it impacted.
10:10Maybe Miller will make good on their promise to get back to a healthy, safe, and productive stage in their
10:15life.
10:15Quote,
10:16I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior.
10:21To some, though, their actions are the epitome of a famous person acting as if they're above the law.
10:26Before we continue, be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest
10:32videos.
10:33You have the option to be notified for occasional videos or all of them.
10:36If you're on your phone, make sure you go into your settings and switch on notifications.
10:43Number 1. Will Smith slaps, cries, and dances.
10:47The feed goes silent, and so does the audience after Will Smith takes a swing at Chris Rock on stage
10:53at the Oscars.
10:54It's hard to say what was going through Will Smith's head at the 94th Academy Awards when he decided to
10:59slap Chris Rock over a joke he made about his wife's shaved head.
11:03Clearly shaken and unsure how to proceed, Chris responds the best way he knows how with another joke.
11:11That was, uh, greatest night in the history of television.
11:16Smith must have known he was heavily favored to win Best Actor, however.
11:20This would make it difficult for the Academy to expel Smith from the ceremony, although it was argued they should
11:25have.
11:25I know to do what we do, you gotta be able to take abuse.
11:33Smith was ultimately allowed to stay and accept his Oscar, tearfully saying,
11:37I want to be a vessel for love, in his speech.
11:39Smith apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees, but Rock's name didn't come up.
11:45I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees.
11:50The apology, which already felt weak, was rendered even more hollow when Smith was spotted getting jiggy at the after
11:56party.
12:01Which actor do you think put the A in Arrogance?
12:03Let us know in the comments.
