00:03I was trying to make a movie about childhood
00:06I just had this one big idea
00:08Well, how about just get the same cast
00:11And we'll film a little bit each year
00:13Like, could you do that?
00:14Would that work as a movie?
00:17Oops
00:17Wait a...
00:19The film was going to capture this fictional family
00:22Aging over 12 years
00:24You know, it's not a documentary
00:26It's a story
00:27You guys ready to have some fun?
00:28Yeah!
00:30Richard called me and he asked me
00:32What are you going to be doing the next 12 years?
00:34And then he told me about this idea
00:36I said, I want to do it
00:40Boyhood is a complete original
00:42It's the first movie that I've ever done
00:44That is truly not like another movie
00:46It was such a leap of faith
00:48It was so much to ask of everyone
00:50For Eller to mature on camera in one film
00:54It's a big thing not many actors have gone through
00:56It was amazing to watch this boy and girl grow up
00:59Watching them at first kind of just being little kids who kind of do cute things
01:04Until they became contributors
01:07Action!
01:08The production itself gained momentum over the years
01:10Every year felt like kind of a very fun reunion
01:15It was incredible to work with these people every year
01:17I look forward to going back
01:19It was like family
01:24There's a certain commonality to growing up
01:27Mom
01:30There's something so normal in a certain way about Mason's story
01:34That I really always felt it would be about moments everyone shares
01:40It's something people identify with
01:42With the passage of time
01:44Life is beautiful and interesting enough as it is
01:47And you don't need to manufacture a lot of falsehood
01:49At some point you're no longer growing up
01:52You're aging
01:52But no one can pinpoint that moment exactly
01:55When you get older you can save up and buy a car of your own
01:57Be cool like I used to be
02:01It was unlike anything I've ever experienced
02:04We've filmed for 12 years
02:05Nobody's ever done that before
02:07The hardest thing was when it ended
02:09I wanted to continue shooting it for the rest of my life
02:12And I never want anyone to be allowed to see it
02:17One story made up of a lot of little pieces
