00:04I think I was turning 40 and I'd been a parent for about 8 years and I wanted to I
00:13guess say something about childhood I was trying to make a movie about childhood but then the dilemma hit me
00:19of like well what part of childhood all my ideas were all over the place I had memories of being
00:2414 and 7 and I didn't know how to
00:28just the practicality of shooting with an actor and then casting another actor none of it made sense I couldn't
00:35grab the story so finally I just had this one big idea well how about just get the same cast
00:41and we'll film a little bit each year like could you do that would that work as a movie so
00:47I'd never seen it before but it felt like it could work it was one of those like aha moments
00:52that you you have every now and then so it's it's kind of a simple idea
00:57really to watch time work through a film but it's so impractical on a on a you know production level
01:08so it was it was a big challenge but that was the big idea I think well you know I've
01:14been wanting to make a film about childhood so I've been thinking about that a lot and I couldn't really
01:20find the moment of childhood because you're limited you know you've got the age of the kid and everyone around
01:26them so but all my ideas kind of spanned a lot of time and I couldn't pick that one moment
01:32so I had this great idea or it felt like a original idea to just what if we filmed why
01:39couldn't you film a little bit and just watch
01:43these people just grow up on camera within one film that seemed like such a unique way to tell a
01:49story
01:49that I hadn't really seen before but it really solved my problem you know like so many things you come
01:55up with
01:55are problem solving and this solved my narrative you know it's not a documentary it's a story but I was
02:01trying
02:02to tell the story of a whole maturation process the whole childhood boyhood and youth you know aspect of
02:10growing up I knew it would end with him you know going off to college and starting in
02:14first grade I had this the grid of one through twelve you know those grades you kind of have to
02:20go to
02:20through because I thought that's kind of what you're sentenced to you know from childhood you're
02:26going to be in school through twelfth grade you're going to live in your parents house that there was this
02:31kind of thing beckoning beyond that and I wanted to get there in the movie so that to me that
02:37covered the
02:37whole thing that's what I had to express about growing up and but the movie is also about parenting
02:43too you know so
02:49to me it all comes down to storytelling you know like it was just the film was going to capture
02:56these fictional this fictional family aging through this time period and it was going to go kind of
03:02where they went to some degree narratively speaking but it was it was always it wasn't like a social
03:10experiment it wasn't it never felt it was just always storytelling it was trying to depict what
03:18they're all going through in a pretty natural simple way that I kind of had a lot of faith in
03:25the
03:25cumulative effect of time and identification like you would become attached to the family in some way
03:33you'd start to care about them you know cinema has that ability and so once you you kind of understood
03:40them and got into them it would pull you in and the cumulative effect of the time passing would be
03:45kind
03:46of powerful in itself so really to me the lead character in the movie is really time it's these it's
03:52these this family but it's also really just how we all process time and think about our own lives and
03:59there's something in here I think for everyone to to think about like who hasn't matured who hasn't
04:06you know grown up you know so the idea hit me in a flash it wasn't it was just going
04:11to be one tone
04:13one cast one movie all in one it would look the same it wasn't gonna there was not going to
04:21be a sign
04:22that said oh it's this year or this grade or you know it was just gonna flow imperceptibly you know
04:28from one year to the next and this family was gonna that that's what the story was this family just
04:37maturing and you know what happens in their lives you know it wasn't a documentary it was just
04:43one one story made up of a lot of little pieces
04:53you
