00:05From the beginning when I read Alan Snow's book
00:06he creates this fantastic world
00:08and from the first time you read it
00:11in the book it's called Rat Bridge
00:13in the movie we call it Cheese Bridge
00:14but it immediately brought back movies that I love
00:17Terry Gilliam, David Lean
00:19especially Oliver Twist
00:21it has a little bit of a Victorian London
00:23a little bit of a steampunk feeling
00:25it's full of all these great fantastic
00:28characters
00:29it seems perfectly well suited for stop motion
00:32you know with these strange characters who live
00:34underground, box trolls and cabbage heads
00:36and sea cows
00:36great opportunity for stop motion character design
00:39and also it has all these strange machines
00:42which is perfectly suited
00:44to stop motion
00:45and the scale of it was very big
00:47it's a big movie set in this big town
00:49with a great over the top villain
00:50and it felt like Laika
00:52after the first two films that they'd done
00:54was poised in this great place
00:56to do what we really intended
00:59to do from the very beginning
01:00with Alan's book is to do a real hybrid
01:03between stop motion and CG
