A mom who has been going blind for years is getting a fresh sense of freedom — thanks to Meta glasses that help her navigate daily life. Charlotte Sterling, 64, from Memphis, Tennessee, began losing her vision when she was 17 years old, having been diagnosed with Stargardt's disease. Later in life, when she was in her 50s, Charlotte also discovered that she had additional degenerative eye conditions, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Glaucoma, and so she can now only distinguish between light and dark and make out some objects. These three completely different eye conditions have left Charlotte barely able to see and will eventually lead to her going completely blind. Losing her vision slowly has been tough, Charlotte said, as even tasks that others might take for granted – "like simply making out a can of green beans in a grocery store" – are becoming impossible tasks. But Charlotte recently found a new hope in a pair of the Meta Gen 2 Skyler glasses, by Ray-Ban. The glasses' technology read out what Charlotte is looking at and describe the object in detail. This has allowed Charlotte, for the first time in decades, to visit the grocery store, hold an item in her hand, and have an awareness of what she is set to purchase. The 64-year-old's daughter, Kat Conner Sterling, was so impressed by how the glasses have given her mom a new level of independence, that she decided to record one of her mom's recent visits to the grocery store.

00:13I did begin to lose my vision when I was 17 years old
00:17due to a genetic eye disease called Stargardt's disease,
00:21which would eventually take all of my central vision.
00:25Just cooking and being able to read recipes or read the labels on the cans.
00:31Even just putting on makeup. Not sure what's what.
00:35It's annoying for her to have to ask someone every time,
00:39like, what does this say? What color is this?
00:41Once we found out about this little piece of technology that we were like,
00:45yeah, this is something we could add to our tool belt for her
00:48that could allow her more independence.
00:51Metta, look at this package and tell me what I am seeing.
00:55Once I saw what they were able to do,
00:57I really don't think it hit me how much it was going to affect her life.

01:19but it was a big thing for me that day.
01:21Hey, Metta.
