00:04I've seen obviously drastic changes
00:06when I was a child
00:08making films, I never saw another woman's face
00:10except for the lady playing my mom
00:11or occasionally, but not always
00:14the makeup artist
00:16and always the script supervisor
00:21When I was young there were a lot of men on movie sets
00:24who were ambling
00:26around these towns
00:27and getting into trouble
00:30and they were unhappy
00:31everything changed when women came on to movie sets
00:35suddenly it felt more like real life
00:38men brought their daughters
00:40and their sons
00:41and their children
00:42and it felt more like a family
00:45and I felt like movie sets became healthier
00:47and I remember that drastic change
00:51so none of this is new
00:54it's not new
00:55that there are fewer women's faces in the film business
00:59but as far as technicians that's changed
01:01as far as producers that's changed
01:03writers that's changed
01:04obviously even in terms of actors careers
01:09it's changed drastically
01:10the one arena that it really hasn't changed at all
01:12that we can see
01:13is mainstream directing for mainstream movies
01:16I think studio executives are scared period
01:18and for some reason women are lumped into that category
01:22of too great a risk to take
01:24you're looking for the best bet
01:27it's hard to look at a face
01:29that is 100% different than yours
01:31that you carry all sorts of traditional preconceptions about
01:34and maybe you worry
01:37that you're going to make a bad choice
01:39it's a financial issue honestly
01:42it's where art and commerce are coming together
01:45and commerce is winning
01:46the business is shifting
01:48and we also have to recognize that
01:51that the business is shifting
01:52and that we have to get used to the new landscape
01:55if you want to tell stories
01:56you want to tell stories
01:58with whatever technology is happening
02:00and if it means you're telling stories on big screens
02:02great
02:03if you're telling them on iPhones
02:04that's great too
02:06if you're an artist
02:07you know you create
02:09and you roll with the times
02:11and you stay relevant
02:12and you adapt to what's around you
02:14and there's a democratization
02:17that technology has brought
02:18that's wonderful
02:19that women can really take advantage of
02:22and that you know
02:22more diverse faces can take advantage of
02:25in ways that they were never able to before
