00:02Eric here with Discussing Film
00:04and I'm here with Mr. Mark Duginheim
00:06Mark, how are you doing?
00:07I'm good, I'm good
00:08You like it around here?
00:09You ever been here before?
00:10Yeah, well I've never been to this convention before
00:12this is the first year of Ace Comic Con I guess
00:16You've been to Long Island before?
00:17I grew up on Long Island
00:18Oh you did?
00:19Yeah, yeah
00:19Nassau or Suffolk?
00:21Nassau, for Washington
00:21Oh, oh
00:22So actually this is my first time at the new Nassau Coliseum
00:25but I was at the old Nassau Coliseum quite a bit
00:27Did you go to Islanders games?
00:29We did, I went to Islanders games, Billy Joel concerts
00:32Who hasn't gone to a Billy Joel concert?
00:35That's true
00:35Back in the day there were these indoor soccer leagues here
00:40and it was the Arrows, the New York Arrows
00:43Yeah, they also had the Dragons football team
00:45Oh, I think that was after my time
00:47Oh
00:48After my time
00:49But yeah, they had the Arrows and you know
00:51we could see the circus here when I was a kid
00:53and you know, it was fun
00:54All right, well speaking of time
00:56it's been, what is it, five years since Arrows started?
00:59Well, we're in our sixth season, so a little over five years
01:02Man, how wild of a ride has it been?
01:04Oh, crazy, it's been an incredibly wild ride
01:07I mean, in so far as like, I don't think any of us ever expected the show to be as
01:10big as it was
01:11or to birth as many other shows as it did
01:13and it's kind of a small miracle
01:16Yeah, because when you started out, didn't you just say like, no powers, we're going to kind of keep this
01:20Nolan inspired a bit?
01:21Yeah, how'd that work out?
01:23Uh, yeah, we clearly did not stick to that
01:25Um, but you know, I think
01:27You know, I think, I think it, what ended up happening was it ended up making the whole world a
01:33lot richer
01:34and the trick with Arrow is always like, how do we sort of keep it to its roots while at
01:38the same time still acknowledging that there's a world now with superheroes
01:41Super, you know, super-powered people out there
01:42Mm-hmm, mm-hmm
01:44I gotta say, uh, I really love what you, uh, have done with, uh, Legends this season
01:48Uh, I was a little, uh, so-so on season one, like, because season one, didn't they, like, drag it
01:56out longer than you originally wrote it for?
01:58Uh, no, I think it just felt that way to everybody
02:01Because, look, we, we were, there were a lot of problems with season one, we didn't have the show really
02:05figured out
02:06Um, and, uh, you know, it only, I think it was 16 episodes for a season
02:10So, probably just seems long
02:13Uh, I could have sworn it, it was, like, originally eight or something
02:15Uh, nope, nope, it was always
02:17Yeah, and then, uh, season two, like, uh, I, I, it came a bit more stronger
02:22I think there was still some, uh, some, uh, problems with it
02:25But, I think the one that really killed it was, the one that was really good was, uh, Legion of
02:30Doom
02:30Because it was, like, you know, it was so funny and everything
02:33And, uh, and then season, season three, when you're on out, I think you took that to heart
02:38And now you just went full, you know, full crazy with it
02:41It's full crazy and full, yeah, I, I, I think, you know, I, I think we've just always been trying
02:47to sort of figure out what the show does best
02:48And do more of that, and, uh, I'm really, the writers have done an amazing job this year
02:53And the actors, and it's been great
02:54Yeah, it's all, like, the skits and everything, like, so, like, uh, is there a lot of, uh, what is
03:01the word? Improv?
03:04Uh, no, uh, every now and again, you know, someone will throw out a different line
03:08There are, like, ad-lib lines by the various cast members
03:11Uh, for the most part, they, they stick to the script, but, um, you know, a lot, if it's a
03:16good ad-lib line, we'll throw it in there, um, you know
03:19I gotta say, yeah, it's, there's been some strong comedy this season
03:23But, uh, like that last episode with Young Stein, he uses the, uh, bow and arrow, and then you hear
03:29the arrow theme for a second
03:30That's, that's pretty strong
03:31Thanks, yeah, that was, uh, I, I, I will say, like, we were in the editing room, uh, on that
03:38episode
03:38And I was like, we gotta hear the arrow theme right here
03:42It worked
03:43And then, I'm really glad, glad people caught up, caught, caught it
03:46I, I, I thought maybe that joke would be a little too subtle, but
03:49Yeah
03:49Um, but I'm glad we did that, that was fun
03:52Very, very Jingle All The Way inspired
03:54Yes, very, very much so, very much so
03:57And, uh, as, moving on, you know, it's like a lot of people are, uh, sort of, uh, leaving, do
04:02you think, would you say this is the era of ushering in, uh, more new people?
04:07Oh, uh, you mean, like, on Legends and stuff?
04:09Yeah, in general
04:10You know, I think, I don't know, I mean, I don't know how many characters we got leaving and going
04:13I think with Legends, it's always been a little bit of a
04:16Rotating roster
04:17Rotating roster
04:18Rotating roster, which is nice, um, you know, and it allows us to constantly refresh the show, uh, and, and
04:24keep the actors on for as long as they want to be on
04:26Uh, but it's, it's always, it's always nice to use as an opportunity to sort of, you know, introduce some
04:32new characters and have a breath of fresh air
04:34Mm-hmm, uh, now, in, like, regarding to, like, character use, have, uh, have you guys had any trouble recently?
04:40I know, like, uh, season three, didn't you have a kind of trouble using the Suicide Squad with Arrow?
04:45Uh, yeah, with, well, we were, we were, you know, just basically told, you know, we've got other plans for
04:51Suicide Squad, so, uh, particularly Deadshot, so, that's why we, you know, sort of did what we did, um, but,
04:59you know, it's, look, these are DC's characters, we're just renting them, you know, um, so,
05:04So, we use the characters that they tell us we can use when we can use them, um, and we
05:10work around whatever limitations are placed with us
05:12Yeah, what about, uh, Deathstroke, because, like, they're going on and off with that character
05:17Yeah, I think, you know, as a result, we've been on and off, uh, you know, for a time, they
05:22were saying, you can't use Deathstroke, uh, then, that changed, and we were able to have, you know, Slade Wilson
05:29back on the show
05:30And now, now we're back, now we're back to, now we're back to...
05:33Wait and see, oh, oh, they, they said they capped it off?
05:37Well, now working on the feature film version, it, it really is sort of, you know, now that you've got,
05:41you know, obviously Slade, spoiler alert, Deathstroke appears at the end of the Justice League movie
05:46That was a great scene
05:48And I think Joe is a great actor, and, you know, Manu's been, like, very encouraging of, you know, his
05:53work, and, you know, it's, it's, it's, there's these intervals, and we try to take advantage of our opportunities when
05:59we have them
06:00Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, uh, was there any, uh, plan for Booster? Didn't you try to get him show off
06:06the ground with him?
06:07Um, no, I think, uh, Greg Verlanti and Andrew Kreisberg were working on a Booster Gold movie, um, but because
06:13I wasn't involved with that, I don't know what the status is
06:15Mm-hmm, uh, and, uh, another thing, uh, going back to the movies, uh, Green Lantern, what was sort of
06:20the experience there? I feel sorry for what happened
06:23Um, yeah, thanks, I feel sorry about what happened, too
06:25You know, look, at the end of the day, you know, the thing about Green Lantern is, is we weren't
06:30the ultimate authors of that, like, you know, we did several drafts of the, of the script, and then it
06:37went off to another writer, who did his own pass on it, it gets produced, and it just sort of
06:43becomes out of our control
06:44So, you know, I think the lesson that we sort of took away from it is, like, if we're gonna
06:49do something like this, you know, if we're gonna go down, let's at least go down on our vision, you
06:55know, unadulterated, unfiltered through other people's hands
07:00Um, it is what it is, I always like to say, you know, it's the very first draft, so it's
07:06not a perfect draft by any means, but, uh, the very first draft is out there online
07:10Yeah, you know, you can find it with a quick Google search
07:12Mm-hmm, yeah, was that the most, uh, Superman at the end, or with Flash, or anything? I can't remember
07:17Uh, no, no, we didn't have any Easter egg at the end
07:19Uh, we had done, I think what you're talking about is, then we did a Flash screenplay, and, yeah, yeah
07:25And how Jordan showed up at the end of the Flash
07:27Okay, yeah, and, uh, with Flash, uh, after that kind of fell through, you kind of just took that to
07:32the show, right?
07:33Um, yeah, I mean, I was involved with the show, I'm still not involved with the show, um, so, you
07:38know
07:38You know, I think of you as CW, man, so I think you do everything
07:40I know, I appreciate that, and I never, you know, honestly, it's hard, because I never want to take credit
07:44for work I haven't done, you know
07:46So, I, I, it's very flattering that people think I have stuff to do with Flash and Supergirl, but I
07:52don't
07:53And while I think those shows are great, and the people involved with those shows are great, um, I never
07:57want to take credit for their hard work, because they're the ones doing the job
08:00Yeah, uh, speaking of characters, uh, Vic Sage, he's been brought up a few times, uh, you planning something? You
08:07still trying to get something?
08:08I'm always, I'm always, I'm the one bringing him up, uh, I, I always bring him up
08:12I just always feel like that character would be, uh, a really great fit with the tone of Arrow
08:17That said, you know, again, it's not our characters, it's DC's characters, and they've got other plans for the question,
08:24which is, which is awesome, because
08:25They do have other plans?
08:26Well, uh, if they didn't, I don't know what their plans are, but clearly they do have plans, otherwise we'd
08:31be using them
08:32Oh, okay, yeah, you'd be using them right away
08:36Yeah
08:36Uh, where would you say, like, uh, how far along are you with, like, Legends and Arrow, like, what episode,
08:42uh, had just finished?
08:44Uh, we can tell you, uh, Arrow, we are breaking episode 615, we're shooting episode 613
08:55Um, Legends, we are shooting, we're just starting to shoot 313, and we have, we're breaking 316
09:05Mmhmm
09:06Uh, so we're a little further ahead on Legends
09:08Yeah, uh, would you, would you say you sort of have the ideas for where you're gonna, uh, if you
09:14get Greenlit, do you sort of have ideas for where you're gonna go next?
09:16We actually do, uh, we do, we, we know how the seasons of both shows are gonna end, and, uh,
09:23how those, those endings will set up the next season of each, uh, of each of the shows
09:28So we, we actually do, we, we have a plan
09:30So, but, uh, you kinda take it, like, closer at a time, you don't have, like, the Marvel Studios master
09:35plan, right?
09:36Um, no, I think it's very hard in television to, like, you know, have a master plan in terms of,
09:42like, how many years out, you know, uh, you know, television works on a different kind of time horizon than
09:47Features does
09:48Um, that said, you know, I think we have a clear vision as to what we wanna do next year
09:53on both of the shows
09:54And, um, that's nice, it's, you know, we don't have official pickups yet, uh, on either show
09:59But we're very confident that we'll get additional seasons on both shows
10:03Are you up there in Vancouver when they shoot?
10:05Uh, not all the time, uh, uh, uh, uh, the writers and post-production are all in Burbank
10:11So that's where I have to spend the majority of my time
10:13I try to go up to Vancouver, like, every six weeks or so
10:15Yeah, um, but, uh, we have amazing teams on both shows in place in Vancouver
10:20They, they, they don't need me there
10:22Yeah
10:23You know
10:24Uh, one last character for me to mention what's gonna happen with, uh, if they're, if they're, if they're, they
10:29don't need me there, you know
10:29If they will ever show up, uh, Sergeant Rock, I know you kind of teased them a few times
10:32Oh, yeah, yeah, you know, he, to me, he's, like, such a great obvious choice for Legends
10:40Um, and, you know, never say never and DC hasn't said no, um, I think we're just, we're just waiting
10:46for the right story
10:46Mm-hmm, yeah, if you look at, like, the history of Sergeant Rock, like, he's kind of been more important
10:51in popular culture than you think
10:52Oh, yeah
10:53You know, uh, the first Predator movie, uh, Shane Black is there reading the comic
10:58Yep, yep
10:59No, I, look, I love Sergeant Rock and I, I love Joe Cooper, uh, who I always, that's the artist
11:04I always associate the most with Sergeant Rock
11:07Mm-hmm
11:07Um, you know, again, it's like, we don't want to, like, not do it right, we want to do it
11:13correctly, you know
11:14And to be fair, I mean, that character has been pretty untapped, so you'd have, you'd be free
11:18We would be very, very free, uh, we would be really, really free
11:21So, one of these days, that's the great thing about Legends, is we can go anywhere and do anything, so
11:25Mm-hmm
11:26All right
11:26Totally possible
11:27Yep, I think, and I think anything you do will be great, Mark
11:31I appreciate that
11:32I'm telling you, man, Legends, you're killing it this season and everything
11:35Thanks very much
11:36Thanks, Mark, thanks for everything
11:37Appreciate it
11:37Mm-hmm
