00:05None of this has ever been attempted before
00:07Flying a helicopter takes a lot of skill
00:09To put someone like Tom into a situation like this
00:11Is almost impossible to imagine
00:13He came to me and he said
00:15We're gonna go to Airbus and we're gonna learn how to fly a helicopter
00:17And be a 2,000 hour pilot
00:19In a very short period of time
00:20It takes something like 3 months of 8 hour days
00:23Just to become a novice helicopter pilot
00:24Tom needed to work around the clock to reach the level of skill the sequence needs
00:28There are very few students that have his level of dedication and focus
00:33Fly safely
00:34Thank you
00:35While most aerial chases you'll see from a helicopter
00:38We don't usually turn the cameras in
00:40So we've developed these rigs over the last couple of months
00:43Where we can basically hard mount cameras
00:45To show that Ethan Hunt is flying the helicopter without anybody else
00:48Every camera position has been designed
00:51So that you can see that Tom is doing everything himself
00:54It's super important for a movie like Mission
00:56To be doing it all practically and for real
00:58Tom doesn't want to sit in a green screen
01:00The audiences can tell when something's been cheated
01:02First time we're doing it
01:04It's gonna work our way in
01:05Make it safe Tom
01:06Make it safe
01:07All right, come on in guys
01:08For safety all the pilots get together in the morning
01:10And they discuss very clearly where they're gonna be
01:13And what their positions are for every shot
01:14I'm gonna look down and I'll take it over the waterfalls
01:17I enter it right away
01:18Let's go
01:19Back up friends, enter the helicopter
01:21The most dangerous part of the aerial sequence
01:23Is really that there's more than one helicopter in the air
01:25We have 13 helicopters in the production
01:27The ones on camera doing aerobatics just a few feet from each other
01:30It's pretty wild
01:31I have you inside
01:31Throughout the entire sequence
01:33To exterior camera
01:34They all have to maintain visual contact
01:36And then there's Tom
01:37He's the pilot, he's acting
01:38And he's the camera operator
01:40We were almost as ready when you were out, Tom
01:41Copy that
01:43The scariest part was the 360 downward spiral
01:45Okay, so let's climb up and I'll dive down
01:48Most pilots wouldn't attempt this
01:49The corkscrew turn is very challenging for a pilot
01:52We're gonna break to the left
01:54It takes a lot of skill and a lot of practice
01:58We're good, we're rolling
02:00You make a mistake, somebody's gonna die from it
02:02No
02:04I'm gonna go
02:05What each spiral looks like is going to crash
02:09Pitch, pitch, pitch, pitch
02:12Boom
02:13That's what I want
02:14How was that, McHugh?
02:16Uh, very upsetting here
02:17Well, I guess that's a sprint
02:19Absolutely
