00:21The real danger comes from people.
00:24Big technology companies are feeding AI enormous amounts of energy and water.
00:29This could plunge our planet into a serious crisis as early as 2026.
00:35So let's start with your computer or your phone.
00:38When you ask ChatGPT to prepare a pitch speech for producers based on your screenplay,
00:43you probably have no idea what scale of industrial power is mobilized to satisfy your request.
00:49Do you even know what AI physically looks like?
00:53It's massive data centers with long rows of tall server racks filled with powerful computing machines.
01:00You've probably seen something similar in hacker movies.
01:03All this equipment hums, heats up, and performs complex calculations.
01:08Several attempts to compose your text, create some images for your pitch presentation, and produce few small five-second videos.
01:16AI will spend about 2.9 kilowatt hours of electricity.
01:20That amount of energy is enough to drive 10 miles in an electric car.
01:25It's also the same amount of energy a microwave uses in three and a half hours.
01:31And these numbers are not exact, because major companies don't disclose all the data about how much energy AI actually
01:39consumes.
01:40Now imagine how many requests you make in a day.
01:43And how many requests do people around the world make?
01:46What about a week?
01:47A month?
01:48A year?
01:50AI works 24-7.
01:52It analyzes, compares, and builds databases.
01:55And it continues to grow.
01:59According to estimates by some experts, generating 1 billion images in a year would require more than 109 gigawatt hours
02:07of electricity.
02:08That amount of energy could power 10,400 homes in the United States for an entire year.
02:15It includes televisions, refrigerators, lighting, heating, and much more.
02:20And besides generating images, there are videos, apps, and many other functions that AI offers us.
02:28Its appetite is only growing.
02:31Meta and Microsoft are actively involved in nuclear power initiatives.
02:37OpenAI is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the construction of around 5 new data centers.
02:43And they all will need about 7 gigawatts of energy.
02:47Apple, Google, and almost all major corporations are spending billions not only on developing AI, but also on maintaining it
02:56and keeping it running steadily.
02:58Do you think all these data centers will get their energy only from solar panels or wind turbines?
03:03No.
03:04Good old fossil fuels will be used mostly.
03:07The sun can hide behind clouds, the wind can stop blowing, but AI needs energy all the time.
03:14It's impossible to imagine how much fuel will need to be extracted.
03:18This means we will release even more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
03:23It's impossible to predict how much energy AI will consume in the next few years, because our request to it
03:30will only increase.
03:33Now, ChatGPT does much more than write a research paper or generate a poster for a fictional movie.
03:40Corporations are already competing to create the best AI agent that can perform thousands of tasks without us.
03:47We communicate with AI in voice mode, chatting with it for several hours a day like real people.
03:53AI also uses energy to get to know us better and adapt to our personality traits.
03:59And of course, the prices for such services will rise.
04:02According to some reports, OpenAI will offer AI agents for $20,000 per month.
04:09In addition, AI is being integrated into every sphere of our lives.
04:14Customer support services, hospitals, transportation, travel agencies, fitness, and much more.
04:22And all of it requires more and more energy.
04:26According to specialists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA,
04:30By 2030, approximately one-tenth of all energy produced on the planet will be spent on servicing data centers.
04:38Traditional data centers used to consume around 25 megawatts of energy.
04:43New giant AI facilities will consume around 100 megawatts.
04:48That's enough to power 100,000 households.
04:52And according to various announcements, there will be centers consuming enough energy to power about 5 million households.
04:59Electricity prices will soar.
05:01And along with them, the prices of many goods.
05:05For example, factories that produce phones will be forced to pay much more for electricity.
05:10Who will cover these costs?
05:13Consumers.
05:13But there's some good news.
05:15The profession of electrician will be in high demand and well paid.
05:20Unfortunately, the problem with electricity is not the worst one.
05:23All these giant data centers heat up so much that because of the high temperatures, they can simply fail.
05:31In the past, computers were cooled with special gases and cold air flows.
05:36In simple terms, fans.
05:38But AI runs so hot that cooling it requires the most valuable natural resource on the planet.
05:44Water.
05:46Big water tanks must be located near data centers.
05:50Engineers don't build them near rivers and lakes.
05:53So millions of gallons of water will be transported from other places, where there may already be shortages.
05:59We constantly hear in the news that the world is expecting a severe water crisis.
06:04The planet's population is growing.
06:07Resources are running out.
06:08And now AI is consuming them in enormous quantities.
06:13Let's not calculate the number of gallons of water needed to cool AI.
06:17But according to some forecasts, in 2027, AI will require as much water per year as 30 to 47 million
06:25people consume in the same period.
06:27That is roughly the population of Canada.
06:30But don't worry.
06:31Our planet still has large reserves of water.
06:33In the worst case, scientists will surely create a filter that turns salty ocean water into fresh water.
06:40Still, AI's water consumption will change agriculture and ecosystems around the world.
06:46Corporations will likely take water from lakes, rivers, and underground sources.
06:51And what about the animals and birds that survive thanks to these water reservoirs?
06:56AI's appetite will keep growing further and further.

07:25And now we come to another danger of AI, your mind.
07:29Many users report on forums that their thinking has become too lazy because of constant AI use.
07:36If you're a student, you surely know that chat GPT can be an excellent study assistant.
07:42And if you work in an office, you've most likely used AI to write an official email to clients or
07:47your boss.
07:49But what's so bad about that?
07:51Here's a simple example.
07:53To find information, people used to browse different websites, gather materials from various sources, analyze data, and structure it.
08:00The brain worked much better and more intensively.
08:03Now AI does all of this for us.
08:06We receive ready-made answers.
08:08Of course, it's a powerful tool.
08:09But we should not trust AI with our entire lives.
08:13Sometimes for the benefit of your brain, it's worth struggling with a task yourself.
08:18AI helps us communicate with other people, cook food, read documents, generate and edit photos, create videos, write stories, and
08:28much more.
08:29And right now, all of this is available at a relatively low cost.
08:33People have become too accustomed to it.
08:36But what will happen when prices rise?
08:39And not everyone can use AI.
08:41People may become helpless in many areas of their lives.
08:45And what about creative professions?
08:47What's the point of painting a picture and practicing composing music when AI can create any image and write any
08:53song?
08:54In this case, we lose the pleasure of creating art.
08:57And what about translators?
09:00Learning foreign languages trains our intelligence extremely well.
09:04But who will want to practice another language if AI perfectly translates text, speech, and video for you?
