"Are WE Beautiful?” is an exploration of the way societal views affect the Black self-image. Told through a series of interviews with real New Yorkers of different ages and gender expressions, exploring and discussing the titular question: are we beautiful?
Transcript
00:00I really became aware of my blackness when I moved to New York in like 2010.
00:06Just being around the different cultures pushed me to be even more black.
00:10As a young black woman growing up in a media renaissance,
00:13my self-image always felt challenged and skewed and I never fully understood why.
00:18I always had access to television, film, and the internet
00:22and was exposed to trends and influencers and beauty standards within society.
00:27And as a teen trying to figure out my own identity that definitely had an effect on the way that
00:32I saw myself.
00:37I mean like I think quite often you know people are stereotyped in TV and media
00:44and they show a version of us that either does not exist or is a very small representation of people.
00:58As I've grown into myself I've realized that my struggle with self-image was not a solitary one
01:05but more of a collective struggle that happens amongst individuals in the black community.
01:10I wouldn't want to be white. Love white people though.
01:14Are you beautiful?
01:15Yes.
01:16Oh yeah.
01:17Yes.
01:17Absolutely.
01:18Of course I'm beautiful.
01:20I'm black, I'm bold, I'm beautiful.
01:23And so we've put together an amazing team of filmmakers in New York to bring these stories to life.
01:30Exploring black people through generations and their relationships with beauty
01:34and the way that social media has influenced their images of themselves.
01:39We are excited to tell these stories but to do so we need funding and we need your support.
01:44And your support will help us through the entire process of filmmaking.
01:49So that includes pre-production, production, and post-production.
01:53We are super excited to get back to work and so please join our campaign and follow us along on
01:59Seed&Spark.
02:00Thank yous.
