High school art teacher Sharn Davidson has Tourette syndrome, a neurological condition that causes involuntary movements and vocalisations, known as tics. While many people with Tourette syndrome find their work options restricted by their tics, Sharn embraces them.

00:03You can't hide the fact that I make dinosaur noises.
00:06It's a medical condition, I can't help it.
00:08It came in with puberty.
00:10They're just tics and it's like a form of Tourette's.
00:13When I was in high school, we just thought that they were hiccups.
00:17Well, actually, it's not a bad hand, you just have an extra finger.
00:20And some little meow.
00:22When I was 21, they really ramped up after I saw a road incident.
00:29I was getting up to 100 a day.
00:33No, I can't do it on purpose.
00:35No, I can't stop it.
00:37No, it just happens when it happens.
00:39It surprises me as much as you.
00:40Kevin is my very, very noticeable tic.
00:44And that is my dinosaur.
00:47Terry is really high pitched.
00:54I've had students call me Mrs T-Rex, Mrs Ra.
00:56I feel like that, again, just encourages the fact that we accept people's differences.
01:02And humour, humour helps with everything.

01:08Staff meetings is never ideal.
01:15There is nothing to be scared off about having a person with Tourette's in your team.
01:20Through having that tic, it's one of her inroads to create that safe platform for the kids.
01:28At the same time, that's not the same experience for everyone that has this condition.

01:34Findings from our research actually show that one in ten people with tic disorders
01:38are actually not able to work because their tics are so severe.
01:43I could go on medication, but the medication might have some more severe side effects.
01:48Or I could just be happy in that I am a little bit quirky.
