00:23ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:43After a shorter winter than usual in F1 terms,
00:46we enter a new era of the sport.
00:48It's time for the talking to stop.
00:50One of the most exhilarating sessions of the year.
00:53It's qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix.
00:56A new era of Formula One.
01:00All of last year's behind me.
01:02I spent a lot of time rebuilding over this winter.
01:04We're all trying to figure it out.
01:07Frey looks very strong and Red Bull as well,
01:09so I think the top four are pretty close together
01:12and it's going to be a tight fight.
01:14The top four are very close.
01:17I'm expecting some flip-flopping this year.
01:21It's a new season with loads of new challenges.
01:23It's not as simple as just continuing from last year,
01:25and saying it's the same thing again.
01:28I'm very excited to see what the others have in store.
01:32There's a lot of things that are still unpredictable,
01:34a lot of question marks.
01:43It's only come Melbourne qualifying
01:45where we get a real true indication of who's on top.
01:52And a marker laid down by George Russell
01:54at the end of an interrupted third practice session.
01:58119.053.
01:59He was over six tenths ahead of his nearest rival on the track
02:03in the form of Lewis Hamilton.
02:05Will that translate into qualifying?
02:07We are about to find out.
02:08There we are then.
02:09That is the scene.
02:10The sun is shining and Melbourne looking beautiful.
02:13Albert Park, the venue, qualifying.
02:15The Australian Broadway.
02:19Morning, all.
02:20Here we go then.
02:22Excitement levels off the scale.
02:24It's the opening qualifying session of the new season.
02:26Jenson Button's alongside me.
02:27So's Bernie.
02:28Ready for it?
02:29Yes.
02:30Come on.
02:31Come on.
02:31Yeah, I mean, if you're excited,
02:33we're pumped, aren't we?
02:34We are.
02:35I think there's so much to look forward to.
02:37First of all, we haven't got a clue what's going to happen.
02:39We think George Russell is the quickest,
02:40but who knows coming into qualifying.
02:42So it's really exciting.
02:43New regs, I think, make the cars a bit more nimble.
02:47They're on their toes a little bit more,
02:49which I love to see.
02:50It suits certain drivers differently than others as well.
02:52So I think Lewis Hamilton,
02:54this is more of a Lewis Hamilton era,
02:55I think, of the way the car works.
02:57OK, yeah, I mean, they've been sliding around, as you said.
02:59I mean, they've been difficult to control.
03:01There's obviously going to be reliability issues.
03:02We know that.
03:03You just have to look down to Aston.
03:04But they're not the only ones.
03:05So, too, Williams.
03:06They've all had their problems so far this weekend.
03:09But none more so, though, than Kimi Antonelli
03:11in that third practice session because it looks quick.
03:14As we said, we'll come on to that.
03:15George Russell's six-tenths ahead of Lewis Hamilton,
03:18but he clipped too much at the kerb and there was a passenger.
03:22Yeah, he was just pushing a little bit too hard.
03:24He was building up through that P3 session,
03:25like the drivers generally do.
03:27And I think possibly a little bit again,
03:30because he did that lift-off, as Jenson mentioned earlier,
03:33because the big pullback, the engine braking,
03:37as we call it, on the power unit,
03:38he got a little bit caught out there.
03:40They're doing their best to put that car back together
03:43and get him back on track
03:44because this is a very important qualifying
03:46for both of them to get out there.
03:47Well, I can give you an update on that, Bernie, if you'd like.
03:49This is fresh from Mercedes.
03:51The chassis and the power unit look okay on closer inspection.
03:55So the garage are working hard to get his car ready.
03:57No guarantee it will be ready in time,
03:59as there's a lot of work to do.
04:01But the team is doing its best to get him out,
04:03as I'm sure they are.
04:04I mean, it did look like a big job.
04:06And, of course, because they are new cars,
04:08not everyone, I mean, they've not got as much practice
04:10as, say, they did at the end of the regulations from last year.
04:13Yeah, and also for a racing driver,
04:15it's counterintuitive that when you lift off,
04:19it causes more oversteer.
04:20You kind of have to drive it like a front-wheel drive race car.
04:23So basically, when you get oversteering a front-wheel drive race car,
04:25you get back on the throttle.
04:27And it's kind of a little bit like that.
04:28You don't want to come off too much
04:29because you do get too much engine braking
04:31and it unsettles the rear.
04:32But now a really sticky situation for him.
04:34And it's a tough one
04:36because the car is looking so strong out there.
04:38But, no, I'll be surprised
04:40if they can get it back together for qualifying.
04:42They are very, very good as a team.
04:44But this is all new to them and it does take time.
04:47Let's go back to George.
04:48Expectation is huge.
04:50He's 28 years of age now.
04:51He's been at that team for a while.
04:53He became the team leader.
04:54He felt comfortable with it.
04:56He can handle the pressure, can't he?
04:58Yeah, I think George is ready for it.
04:59You know, even through last year
05:01when he was given the opportunity,
05:02we very rarely see George make very many mistakes
05:06from driving a lap.
05:07And that's what I expect.
05:08I expect him to continue that.
05:09Look at the margin he has from FP3.
05:12If that's genuine,
05:14then he can go into FP1,
05:17lift off a little bit.
05:18He just doesn't need to get everything out of it in FP1.
05:21Q1.
05:23Q1.
05:23Q1, sorry.
05:24As the sessions...
05:25It's good to pick me up on that.
05:26As the sessions progress,
05:28you know,
05:29once the traffic gets less,
05:30he can start to push a little bit more
05:31each run that he does.
05:32But that sort of margin,
05:34he's got to feel quite confident
05:36Q1 into this Q1 session.
05:38Like we call him Mr. Consistency so often,
05:40I think he's ready for it.
05:42Let's go back quickly to Lewis Hamilton.
05:44Your comment there about why you think
05:45this is going to suit him a little bit more
05:47and, you know,
05:48give the, you know,
05:49Team Hamilton fans a bit of a boost.
05:51Yeah, the way that the cars are,
05:53they're more nimble.
05:54You can have oversteer in a race car now
05:58and get away with it
05:59as long as you do the right thing
06:00with the throttle pedal.
06:01But that's not been the case
06:02the last few years.
06:03They had to set the cars up
06:04with a little bit of understeer
06:05with the ground effects
06:06because if you did get a snap,
06:07you were facing the wrong way
06:08and in the wall.
06:09And Lewis Hamilton likes to drive a car
06:11with strong front end
06:13and he was able to get the best out of it.
06:15And I remember that
06:15from when we were teammates.
06:17So this definitely suits him a lot more
06:19and you can see it on his face.
06:20He's a lot more confident
06:21and excited about being here.
06:23Oscar Piastri has started
06:24a little better than his teammate,
06:25the world champion Lando Norris.
06:27He was top of the timesheets
06:28in the second practice session
06:30and fourth in that third practice session.
06:33Let's hear from him now.
06:34He spoke to Rachel earlier in the week
06:36when they went to drive some supercars.
06:49You know Cam, obviously?
06:51Yes.
06:51Met before?
06:52Met before.
06:53Yeah, one time ago.
06:54A long time ago.
06:54Did you used to watch the V8 supercars
06:56when you were a kid?
06:57Yeah, I mean, to be honest,
06:58I probably watched the V8s
06:59more than I watched F1
07:00because the time difference
07:01was a lot kinder.
07:03I used to watch the drag races
07:04here with my dad.
07:05Did you?
07:06Sat down the end there,
07:07so it's nice to come back
07:08to Caldera after all these years.
07:09Okay, well, you're both
07:10going to be on track today.
07:11Yes.
07:12This is Cam's car for the weekend.
07:13Did you know that?
07:14I've actually given you my race car,
07:16so please look after it.
07:17Okay.
07:18Did you know the other part
07:18of the deal was that
07:19he now gets your F1 car as well?
07:20Did you know that?
07:21He's going to take that out?
07:23He could have Lando's F1 car.
07:25I'm okay with that as well.
07:27Mate, you have so much fun out there.
07:29This is worrying me slightly.
07:30I'm in the car with him.
07:31It's fine.
07:31I'll be behind watching.
07:33I'm going to be loving it.
07:37All right, let's go do it.
07:39Sounds good.
07:42Lost a leg.
07:44I might get you to do them.
07:46I've never done my belts up
07:47in my life.
07:48Have you driven this track before?
07:50No.
07:51I've got no idea
07:52how the car works
07:54or where the track is going.
08:07I'm going to be driving by.
