00:00And Formula One is underway in Melbourne.
00:04Good reaction time at the front of the field for Carlos Sainz.
00:07But his part is blocked by Max Verstappen, who has the lead.
00:10Norris maintains third, Verstappen signs.
00:12And then it is Lando Norris, a clean route through for all of those in the field.
00:17It'll be 19 now that Joe Guanyu joins the race.
00:20It's Verstappen with the getaway that he needed.
00:22Then it's Sainz, Norris, Leclerc stayed ahead of Piastri.
00:25It's getting very, very tight between Perez and George Russell.
00:28And it's Russell who finds his way to hang on to the place.
00:33He moves up to sixth position, Perez down to seventh.
00:36It's as you were ahead.
00:38Here we go, the best chance to get past his old teammate.
00:41These two started life in Formula One together at Toro Rosso.
00:45And they're about to go wheel to wheel.
00:46You're watching a Ferrari take the lead of the Grand Prix.
00:50Carlos Sainz, first opportunity offered up, first opportunity taken.
00:55And the man who didn't race in the last round leads in round three.
01:00The smoke.
01:01It is smoke out of the back of Verstappen's car.
01:04For the first time in two years, reliability could be a question mark.
01:08Can you believe what we're seeing?
01:10The man who has finished every Grand Prix since he retired from this one in 2022 has smoked from the
01:19rear of the car.
01:20Max Verstappen has an issue.
01:23He's still very close to the lead of the Grand Prix, but he might not have a tire left at
01:27the end of it.
01:28Where's that smoke coming from? Is it something on the rear right?
01:32It's gone. It's gone.
01:34The man who was trying to win ten Grand Prix in a row for the second time in his Formula
01:40One career.
01:41Will not continue the run. A fire at the back of the car. The dreams of victory gone.
01:47A fire, fire.
01:53He has had Formula One set to easy, week in, week out, but he will not see the flag.
02:02He's retiring from the Australian Grand Prix.
02:04And in Melbourne, it's game on to win the Australian Grand Prix.
02:10And the World Championship leader chasing title number four, the first retirement against all expectations.
02:18And his 43 race finishing streak in Formula One comes to a fiery end.
02:25Yeah, I've had an engine failure.
02:27Okay. Engine failure. Engine failure.
02:30Hamilton out of the race. Our second retirement of the day.
02:35It's Verstappen and now it's Hamilton.
02:38Hamilton and Mercedes have had a few worries about the power unit.
02:41This time, it's taken out their seven-time world champion driver.
02:46The virtual safety car is now deployed. That was always coming.
02:50And everyone reduces their pace.
02:52If you pit under the virtual safety car, you save yourself about seven seconds.
02:56But look at the way Hamilton's parked as he gets out of the car.
02:59That'll take just seconds to push behind the wall.
03:01Well, there goes the engine in quite a severe way.
03:05Sudden cut for Hamilton.
03:07Second retirement. And Alonso, if he can scramble to the pit lane, will save himself six and a half, seven
03:12seconds of pit stop time.
03:14And Alonso is looking for that benefit. It is a Ferrari 1-2 on track.
03:20Then Piastri and Lando Norris. Look at how much it pays you back if you pit under the virtual safety
03:27car.
03:27Well, Fernando Alonso says, thank you very much. You can get rid of that virtual safety car now, chaps. We're
03:33ready to go racing again.
03:34And we look at the live speeds of Russell and Perez building up through the gears, heading to 190 miles
03:43per hour and heading to an overtake.
03:46If Perez can just get close enough, does he have enough road to sweep around the outside? There is your
03:51answer.
03:52He did it in the final meters of the corner, but he got the move done.
03:56Russell, does he launch one to the inside? Can he launch one to the inside by way of response?
04:00The answer is no. Perez P6. And that's another pass for him. He will go chasing Fernando Alonso.
04:08We know that in the final stages of this run that Fernando Alonso will not have the speed of Perez.
04:14In fact, Alonso darting out of the way, doesn't want to get mixed up in the Mexican drivers race.
04:19And now that is fifth position for Perez, who has a bit of clear air.
04:24He's going to try and do something about the four in front of him.
04:27There's the call. This is not going to be popular amongst the Aussies.
04:30But he's going to pull over and Norris will sweep through for third.
04:33Piastri playing the team game.
04:35Norris is on tires that are five laps younger than Oscar Piastri.
04:40Charles Leclerc covering off the two quick drivers behind.
04:45It's going to be tight. Perez, Alonso chasing.
04:482.1 seconds thought was so important.
04:50This is going to give an opportunity now to Fernando Alonso.
04:53The three of them together.
04:55And Alonso has got a great opportunity. Which way does he go?
04:58Leclerc maintains, just maintains track position.
05:02And Alonso, despite soaring to the left, to the right, can't find his way past Perez.
05:06And that was closer than Ferrari would have wanted.
05:09When you see Verstappen go out of the race, you know there's a point on offer for teams who need
05:13to take their chance.
05:14And Alex Albon running as close as he dared to the back of the Haas.
05:19But not on the side of the race track that he needed to be.
05:22And Hulkenberg, Scampus clear.
05:25All the while this goes on.
05:26Tsunoda with RB's most important pit stop of the year so far.
05:30And he's back out ahead of both.
05:32They're so dangerous.
05:34Moving.
05:35This is how Oscar Piastri was able to take the position on the outside.
05:41And then shown part of the race track he hasn't seen before.
05:45Then given room by Fernando Alonso.
05:47This is Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda.
05:49That pipe bomb move.
05:51And taking the place away from his old teammate and good friend.
05:55Just out of the points, these two.
05:58Kevin Magnussen thinking about the move to the inside.
06:03My word.
06:06Oh, he's thinking about it from miles back.
06:08He is all over the back of the Williams.
06:11It's going to be quick again.
06:13It's going to be very fast.
06:14This time around the outside to take the place.
06:18Kevin Magnussen gets the move done.
06:21Oh, big crash.
06:23George Russell with a massive accident at the end of the Grand Prix.
06:27At turn number six.
06:29And that will end the race as a contest.
06:32The virtual safety car is out.
06:35George Russell was battling over sixth place.
06:37And this is how it came undone.
06:39He got so close to Fernando on the way into the corner.
06:43It was just simple dirty air for Russell.
06:45And just simply didn't have the airflow over his car.
06:48Lost a load of downforce.
06:50Turned in and had a major oversteer.
06:53All the way to the barriers.
06:55What a performance.
06:57What a comeback.
06:58A Ferrari 1-2.
07:00Headed by Carlos Sainz.
07:02Who wins the Australian Grand Prix.
07:05Yes, we have it.
07:07P1, baby.
07:08P1.
07:09It's a baby shark move.
07:12Good job, Carlos.
07:17This is amazing.
07:18Thank you guys.
07:20Life is a roller coaster.
07:22It is.
07:23Life is incredible.
07:26It was a smooth operator.
07:29Oh, I forgot.
07:30A smooth operator.
07:34Carlos Sainz.
07:35Carlos Sainz.
07:35The sensational winner of the Australian Grand Prix.
07:38With his most dominant drive in Formula 1.
07:40It says he only won by 2.3 seconds.
07:42But he was always in control of that one.
07:45From the moment that Verstappen was out of the race.
07:47Here's what it does to the Drivers' Championship.
07:50Max Verstappen still leads.
07:52Charles Leclerc up to 2nd.
07:54Down to 3rd go Sergio Perez.
07:56Up to 4th.
07:57Our race winner today.
07:58In the Constructors' Championship.
08:00It's a Red Bull Racing on 97.
08:02But look at Ferrari on 93.
