00:00Stretches of Taft Avenue in Manila and Pasay are notorious flooding hotspots, no thanks to the severely clogged drainage systems
00:07along the route.
00:08So bad is the situation in certain areas during the monsoon season, floodwaters reach even inside classrooms.
00:15Thus, the laydown of new drainage pipes is in full stride, which DPWH Chief Vince Dizon personally oversaw earlier today,
00:25as our Bernard Ferrer reports.
00:30Flooding along Taft Avenue in Manila becomes a challenge for Cristal. The area is known to be flood-prone zone
00:35for several decades already.
00:37Because of this, floodwaters from the streets sometimes reach the classrooms of the University of Cristal Studies.
00:43Sa loob ng school namin, for example, kung may mga rumpudo na ginagamit po namin, binagaligyan po namin ang mga
00:49materials for our school projects, tapos pagbalik po namin, we need to clean up.
00:54Other schools along Taft Avenue also feel the effects of flooding when a southwest monsoon or a typhoon hits Metro
01:01Manila.
01:01Basta yung, meron po kami nga badminton court dyan sa loob, parang po siyang swimming pool. Parang within the day
01:07na pala wawala.
01:08Basta tumigil na yung ulan. Kasi yung pagdere-derecho yung ulan, yun talaga yung, yun talaga yung, grabe yung baha.
01:14The DPWH is continuing the intensive rehabilitation of the drainage system, particularly along Taft Avenue near Santa Isabel College, Manila.
01:22The project is expected to be completed by April or May.
01:26Ang advantage ng bago, mas madaging ikabin, hindi tayo makaka-store kumasado sa traffic.
01:32Tapos, mas madigis ang daloy ng tubig. At mas madami yung tubig na pwede niyang dagan.
01:39New drainage pipes, which are larger and more modern, are also being connected to Steno de Belete,
01:44while the water will flow towards Steno de Provisore and eventually into the Bahasek River.
01:49The project is part of a 4-kilometer flood mitigation program covering Taft Avenue from the area near Santa Isabel
01:54College to Pio Campo Street near De La Salle University.
01:58The project costs 1.2 billion pesos and is expected to be fully funded by 2027.
02:04The DPWH is looking for other ways to secure the necessary funding for the project.
02:09DPWH Secretary Vince Thiessen also assured the public that there will be no more piecemeal funding for the department's projects.
02:40Meanwhile, the DPWH continues to work diligently to complete necessary projects
02:45to help reduce the impact of flooding on Filipinos.
02:47Bernard Ferrer, from the National TV Network for New and Better Philippines.
